[IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 7-16

2014-07-17 Thread Gary DeBock via IRCA
---BeginMessage---

Hello All,

It was a pleasure to welcome noted DXpeditioner Chuck Hutton to the humble
Highway 101 turnoff this morning-- possibly for the psychological assurance
that somebody else was also fanatical enough to chase DX on the side of an
ocean side cliff on busy Highway 101 at 0400 local time (actually, Bill was
there before me, at around 0300, to set up his small flag antenna). So with the
reassurance that both of us were indeed halfway normal, we proceeded to chase
Kiwi DX in both an Apples and Oranges setup (Perseus SDR + Flag antenna, and
PL-380 Ultralight Radio + FSL antenna).

Fortunately Chuck encountered the same New Zealand-slanted propagation that I
have been experiencing for the past 3 days (which happens often at Rockwork 4,
but which is particularly intense this week). We both DXed independently, so
the report below contains only the Ultralight + FSL highlights of the session.
Once again it was primarily an all-Kiwi session, with S/N pegging signals from
531-PI, 567-RNZ and 657-Southern Star. At the 1115 UTC start time New Zealand
stations were already on the warpath, with 531-PI leading the charge at an S-9
level. Signals continued to improve until the peak sunrise enhancement from
1230-1300, including the strongest signals ever received from 567-RNZ and
657-Southern Star. Despite multiple searches the Australians seemed to be back
in hibernation, with the intense Kiwis totally shutting them out on all the low
band frequencies. Around 1256 UTC a fairly decent carrier finally showed up on
576, and I figured that the Aussie big gun 2RN was finally making its first
appearance this week. When tuning in, however, I heard a fairly weak station
with a solemn DU voice reading something (or maybe preaching), backed up by a
two-tone organ-- with apparent mentions of the Lord at :54 and :57 into the
MP3 recording. Because this format doesn't sound at all like the Aussie big gun
2RN, it makes me wonder whether the intense Kiwi propagation delivered a very
rare New Zealand station apparently never before heard on the west coast-- the
2.5 kW The Word/ Bible Radio in Hamilton. The only Aussie to make it through
the twisted propagation was the Brisbane big gun 1116-4BC, which somehow
managed to deliver a vibrant signal around 1247. Chuck and I wrapped up DXing
around 1330, and plan to hit the Rockwork 4 cliff again very early on Thursday
morning.

531 PI Auckland, NZ (5 kW) Another day, another thunderous PI recording--
so what else is new?

Re: [IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 7-16

2014-07-17 Thread Stephen Airy via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
Hi Gary,

I'm enjoying your recordings so far. :)

Hey if you're still there today, unless you already did and I missed it, have
you ever done a midday bandscan video with the PL-380 and FSL at the cliff?
I'd love to hear (and see on the display) what signals you receive there in the
daytime.
Also have you done a gain comparison / shootout video of a stock PL-380 (no
7.5 loopstick) vs. the FSL + 7.5 loopstick?  I'd like to get some idea of the
gain it gives, and I think it'd help if it's done with a signal that's weak but
readable on the stock radio, for example one reading 17/04 or something like
that.

I'd love to be able to try DXing some DU stations myself, but is it possible
from my inland location (32.76065, -116.94585) with just a ULR and
Select-A-Tenna?
My ULRs are:
• PL-380 (busted volume knob)
• 2x PL-606 (1x busted display)
• SRF-59 (audio out left side only)
• SRF-M37W (with aftermarket filter, but at least 1 local is still heard 200+
kHz away)
• CC Pocket (but considering sending it back due to some issues like low volume
on some signals)
• SRF-42
and a few others with much inferior performance.  Also my 60+ dBµ pests are on
600, 690, 760 (80+ night), 910 (70+ night), 1130 (70+), 1170 (80+ day) and
1360, with runners up (50+) including (but not limited to) 540, 660 (night),
720 (night), 740 (night), 800, 810 (night), 840 (night), 860, 950 (day), 1040
(day), 1070 (night peaks), 1090, 1110 (SR/SS), 1210, 1240, 1470, 1530 (night),
1580 (night), 1670 (night) and 1700.
My next confirmed DU reception would be my first, although there's been a few
times I've wondered if I had something but couldn't get enough audio to ID.

I've been looking at the lists on mwlist.org trying to come up with a list of
targets, but that project is no where near done yet.

A few comments on some of your recordings so far this week ...

7-13 - 603 Radio Waatea - nice nearly-QRM-free signal. :) This would be tough
for me, as I have a local on 600 just 7.7 miles west of me.  Although, I wonder
if it would be possible?  I *have* heard 594 JOAK here once, and 600-KOGO (~68
dBµ on PL-606) was running IBOC at the time and they aren't anymore.

7-13 - 1503 Radio Sport - is there some nearby local interference/station here?
The character of the noise/hiss sounds a lot like what I hear when there's a
strong local signal (like 75+ dBµ 20-40 kHz away or 87+ dBµ 100+ kHz away;
blank-channel dBµ readings nearby would typically be 41-49, or sometimes 50)
near a semi-weak-to-medium target signal.

7-14 - 594 NZ Rhema - think I have a chance at this?  (see above on 7-13 603
re: KOGO)

7-14 - 675 RNZ - is the splatter from 670-KBOI or 680-KNBR (guessing this one)?
And I would have thought the ±1 kHz filter should have eliminated all traces
of it from 5 kHz away?

7-14 - 684 NZ Rhema - what was that noise from at the beginning that quieted
down after a couple seconds?  Also I'm guessing the splatter is KNBR?

7-14 - 738 R Polynesie - I would have liked to hear a few seconds of the
splatter they were putting on KCBS. :)

7-14 - 765 R Kahungunu - would my strongest nighttime local (760 KFMB, 7.3 mi
NW, 50 kW DA, 81 dBµ) be too much for this to overcome?

7-14 - 891 5AN - wow that's a pretty nice signal for the distance! :)  I think
midway through I'm hearing another station in the background - is that
something else on 891 (which I'm guessing due to the rhythmic fade that you get
when you have two near-frequency stations coming in), or off-frequency
reception of a domestic on 890 (guessing not this cause the het would be much
louder, unless you tamed it in an editor before you posted it)?

And I must have a different definition of crunch test than you do? :) Here's
a couple videos of me doing crunch tests on my PL-606 on 1170 KCBQ, going from
barefoot to boosted with SAT + utility ground, including some shortwave
harmonics:
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE2n94DLDak - 9.2 miles S of transmitter
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEMLcEqCu3E - 0.1 mi SW of transmitter
I would assume that receiving 2CH Sydney from that 2nd video's location would
be very tough. ;)
You may notice that the signal with the SAT + utility wire from 9 miles away is
stronger than the barefoot signal from a few hundred feet away.  Does the 15
FSL give a comparable level of boost?

7-15 - 657 Southern Star - this would be at least one station I'd like to be
able to listen to from here, as I like Christian music.  (Speaking of which,
could you confirm whether 1460-KARR is off the air?  I heard they were going to
go off.)

7-16 - 531 PI - this would be another desired target (I like the music, also in
the 7-13 recording - is it a Christian station? although I don't know the song
don't understand the language).  I have a local on 540 (XESURF) but at only
~55 dBµ or so it shouldn't be too much of a pest hopefully?  Although, it does
hamper my reception of the fringe TIS I sometimes receive on 530,

These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of
USA, unidentified,
separated by === Within each, they are in frequency order

** CANADA [and non]. 860, July 12 at 0503 UT, a nice NAFTA mix: French Canadian
talk atop, certainly CJBC Toronto, vs CBS news from KKOW Kansas, and Mexican NA
in the background, 0504 UT followed by full ID for Monterrey, i.e. XENL, 5/2 kW
per IRCA. Too much QRM to copy details such as slogan, listed as ``Radio
Recuerdo, Canal 860``. Predominant SAH of 2 Hz, almost matching the beat of the
NA, so not sure which duo of the trio match and which mono be off. MWOffset
list includes only CJBC which in January 2012 was 1.5 Hz high. I might not have
caught this if there had been a Fox-hole on 960 KGWA which I was checking first
at 0500 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

===

** U S A. 670, July 15 at 0553 UT, nulling WSCR I immediately hear ``hog
call``, so KHGZ Glenwood AR, 5 kW daytimer is again on air in the nightmiddle;
rather gets in the way of Cuba in same direxion (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** U S A. 750, July 12 at 0543 UT, KAMA El Paso with Univisión América talk
about Tejas Gob. Perry, way atop poor WSB Atlanta, as KAMA is obviously running
10 kW ND again instead of 250W ND or 1 kW westward as authorized (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 750, July 13 at 0601 UT, KAMA El Paso in Spanish again over WSB;
maybe just propagational variation, but an hour earlier it was not like that. I
wonder if they switch to 10 kW ND around local midnight, hoping no one will
notice? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 750, July 15 at 0557 UT, PSA in Spanish about kids, way over WSB from
opposite direxion, so KAMA El Paso TX cheating again (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 750, July 16 at 0503 UT, Spanish talk from west continues to dominate
the frequency, impossiblizing audibility of WSB Atlanta; i.e. KAMA El Paso with
Univisión América programming, 10 kW ND apparently on day facility; so also
before local midnite (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1730, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** U S A. 750, July 17 at 0548 UT, Spanish mixing with WSB, so KAMA El Paso
still out of whack (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1140, July 13 at 1156 UT, sax music, outro as `All That Jazz` show, I
think from KCXL, same one with 1158 UT weather, 1159 UT YL English ID as
``KCXL, Liberty [MO], 1140 AM and 102.9 FM``. However, it was interrupted at
1157 UT by Mexican music in volatile post-sunrise skip, no doubt KLTK Centerton
AR. Sunday morning ghetto allows commercial stations to do something different
of possible minority interest (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1520, July 13 at 1203 UT, distinctive voice of CRI newscaster in
English can be heard mixing with KOKC, making slow SAH, i.e. KYND Cypress TX
again, the ChiCom access to Houstonians with ordinary radios, bleeding over
past Oklahoma City (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

[IRCA] Mostly Mexican MW DX to Enid OK, July 11-17, 2014

2014-07-17 Thread Glenn Hauser via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also
VHF/UHF, sometimes  utility, ham, which may be found in several archives
without much delay, such as
http://www.hard-core-dx.com/index.php?topic=Hauser

And compiled weekly along with extensive news from many other individuals and
publications in DX LISTENING DIGEST:
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxldmid.html

All my MW DX reports starting August 2011 are archived in this forum with open
access:
http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?6543-MW-DX-from-Enid-OK-by-Glenn-Hauser/page24

All times and dates strictly UT. Rx: mostly DX-398 or PL-880 with internal
antenna only; Nissan stock caradio as specified; FRG-7 with E-W longwire as
specified

** MEXICO. 710-, July 12 at 0501 UT, XEDP, Cuauhtémoc, Chihua2 is off-frequency
again, making a LAH with KCMO. My keyboard barely reaches it at the low end,
circa F below middle-C, or 175 Hz, vis-à-vis more like F# of 185 Hz the last
time I checked, i.e. now 709.825 kHz or so. In cases like this, one wonders if
station be alternating two different transmitters (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 710-, July 16 around 0545 UT, tell-tale het again from XEDP Ciudad
Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, which jumps on and off frequency from one night to the
next. I haven`t yet noted whether it is a strict alternation (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 710-, July 17 at 0548 UT check, XEDP is off-frequency again tonight
hetting KCMO on 710.0 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO [and non].

[IRCA] DX Tests

2014-07-17 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
DX TESTS
Brandon Jordan – PO Box 338 – Rossville TN  38066
E-mail: bdjo...@gmail.com

Brandon Jordan is our new DX Tests co-ordinator, working for both IRCA and NRC.
He has established the above PO Box/email for correspondence. He is also
available at 901-592-9847 or FAX: 866-240-4221.

Brandon has registered dxtests.net url and will be working on getting a
Wordpress blog set up there in preparation for the upcoming season. He is also
anticipating former DX Test workers to be assisting him in his efforts. In
addition, he is also considering arranging DX tests on SW stations.

DX Tests are “arranged” with various AM stations across the US and Canada. A DX
Test broadcast would most likely be conducted sometime in the overnight hours,
between midnight and 6:00 am typically just after midnight, or just prior to 6
am. These are the best hours for an AM station to skip to distant locations.

DX Test broadcasts used to be popular during the early days of AM radio, and
they continue to this day. When done overnight, they’re perfectly within FCC
regulations, as is broadcasting with full authorized power under the
Experimental Hours rules of 47CFR73.72. In fact, stations have often combined
DX Tests with needed maintenance work or proof-of-performance testing, and
engineers have often told us that the reception reports they received indicated
the quality and strength of their signal, and gave them an opportunity to see
how far it travels under varying conditions.

Tests typically consist of tones and easily identifiable music such as marches,
polkas or anything else you might classify as eclectic. This kind of material
really cuts through the interference and makes a station easily recognizable.
Morse code identifications using a 1000 Hz modulated tone are also widely used.
Recordings for broadcast during a DX Test can be provided by our committee.

Please join us in welcoming Brandon on-board for the next DX season. We
anticipate hearing from him often.

Yahoo Mail addresses generate the John Smith via IRCA and mime-attachment

my iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

I've also noticed that using reply, not reply to all, sends an email to the
poster. That might be an Apple thing. I'm using Gmail but don't think that has
anything to do with it.

The emails are increasing to a version where they can't be read unless you
click on two things. Frankly, it is a PITA. If this continues and
increases, I'll simply drop out of this email list. The other half dozen or
so I have, email lists do work just as before, and easy to read.

Hopefully at the IRCA Convention there will be a discussion to revert to the
better email list version.

I even have email lists on two of my web sites. Mine does not make the
difficult version and never has...

[IRCA] Moving towards better DXing

2014-07-17 Thread R. Colin Newell
After 20+ years living in an apartment and condo, my wife and I have bought
a house out
in the burbs with a BIG back yard and the potential for some REAL antennas.
Although my ham radio operating has been awesome all those years, using
stealth antennas,
my MW and LW Dxing has not achieved its true potential because of antenna
limitations on a 7th story balcony in a concrete and steel building.

The new 'hood has underground utilities and on initial tests and
inspections prior to purchase, it was pretty darned quiet.

I look forward to finally being able to roll up my sleeves and work with
the Big Boys
of the Northwest; Salmaniw, Hall-Patch, Atkins, Portzer and DeBock... the
Rolling Stones
of the DX World up here.

Wish me luck everyone!

After 20+ years living in an apartment and condo, my wife and I have
 bought
 a house out
in the burbs with a BIG back yard and the potential for some REAL
 antennas.
Although my ham radio operating has been awesome all those years, using
 stealth antennas,
my MW and LW Dxing has not achieved its true potential because of
 antenna
limitations on a 7th story balcony in a concrete and steel building.

The new 'hood has underground utilities and on initial tests and
inspections prior to purchase, it was pretty darned quiet.

Well - from my condo which is on a hill top with water views AND 275' above

I have not put everything in QRZ.com and I figure I have had around 2000
QSO since my ham career started
in 2008 or 2009.
With 10W (all mode) but mostly SSB, I have worked around 50 countries.
I have upgraded my ICOM 703+ (which I have kept for back up...) to a
Kenwood TS-480SAT (100 Watts - All mode)

I look forward to using my Drake R8, Kenwood R2000, Eton E1 with real
antennas -- and firing up my venerable DX150B
after 30 years of relative inactivity. Back in 1976 I use to DX with Nick
Hall Patch during that stellar DX season and
it picked up Europe night after night with a 300' Inverted L terminating at
the 75' level of a Douglas Fir Tree...
I have pictures of this antenna that I should post one day. They were the
good old days -- hope they return!

[IRCA] TP for 17 July, Gabriola Island

2014-07-17 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A quick trip to Gabriola Island while Gary and Chuck were working the cliffs,
with I imagine, completely different results.

I was monitoring the DX Fishbarrel in Victoria while DXing here; Victoria was
hearing Tahiti 738 at audible levels, while Gabriola was barely getting a
carrier using a KAZ antenna with a FLG100 amplifier, so I expected that Zedders
might be missing, and I was not surprised. Things faded out fairly quickly
here after 1200UT, and before, it was all Asia.

HLAZ 1566 had two women in CC at 1152UT at completely readable levels, and 1287
had a man in JJ.NHK pips were barely heard at 1200UT on 594 and 828, plus,
even more barely, 1503. Otherwise, lots of carriers in the usual spots, 774,
972, 1053, 1179, 1269 etc., but little audio. And no audio and few carriers
at all from DU as sunrise approached.

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Pat Martin

2014-07-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Mike,

Yes, indeed I am alive and well. I just have not been at the dials all that
much of late. A friend sent me a Sony HD Radio recently and I plan to put up
the 6 element FM Yagi and try for some FM DX too. I also plan to be in Billings
in Sept for the IRCA 50th.

made me wonder. Glad he's just busy!

I can't explain however why some members messages are received in that

2014-07-17 Thread Mike Hawkins
EML attachments are usually coming from Outlook when the user has decided
to format their message as HTML. Outlook users will see a message formatted
by Outlook senders differently than other people will. Using plain text
usually stops this problem.

Pat: Glad to see you're alive. I was asking about you.
