Mike Stonebridge used to get Yellowknife 1340 once in a while and even as far
North has he is, it wasn't that common. He did log both Yellowknife's though. I
got YK in Seward AK in the 60s as well as CHAK 860. I forgot about them. CHAK
is still on 860 with 1 KW. Common in Seward AK, but never logged here, not with
CFPR running 10 KW fulltime.

[IRCA] KEWE Kahului HI 1240 is on the air (WDXR)

2014-12-03 Thread Patrick Martin
KEWE 1240 HI, Kahului is on the air with Gospel music The Spirit of Maui.
CP for 5KW, but currently running 1 KW, according a Scandinavian DXer I got an
e mail from. I tried tonight, but not heard as yet here on the coast. PO Box
1437 Wailuku HI 96793. They also have an FM and a website. The first
Graveyarder Hawaii has had since the 60s when KTOH moved from 1490 to 1350 kHz.
This should be a good challenge for even the DXer on the West Coast. But once
they boost to 5KW, it should be easier when conditions are decent. The station
was logged by a DXer from Finland already. It came on Nov 22nd.

5KW probably could make it to the NW if cx were really AU. But it would take
great conditions. If I sit long enough on 1240, the station will make it in

Re: [IRCA] Another Alaskan

2014-12-03 Thread Theo
I visited Ric Heald in Sitka, AK over Christmas/New Year 67/68 and
CFYK/1340 (possibly only 250w at the time?) was heard... as was the then
NZBC's 1ZD/1000 in Tauranga/now RNZ National on 1008... both verified.
grin

Ric's apt was in a converted house in the middle of Downtown... can't
recall his receiver or antenna set-up, but they can't have been too fancy.

Pat is correct. I did hear Yellowknife on 1340 many times. Unfortunately it
moved to FM in March of this year. I have never logged CHAK-860. Alaskans
haven't been as common this winter as other years, tho a few have made it
through with KINY the most common.

Re: [IRCA] Another Alaskan

2014-12-03 Thread Patrick Martin
Nick,

I had a 2,000 foot beverage for years running N/NNW, until they put a road in.
I logged both Whitehorse stations then along with 250w Fort Nelson BC on 590,
all during daylight in the Winter mornings, but CFPR is just too much of a
powerhouse here. Again, cx have to be exceptionally well to get the far North.
It look years to finally log KBRW 680, and CHFA was weak here, and slightly
different in direction. I just had to phase out powerhouse KNBR. But getting
through CFPR and with CHAK running 1 KW, not an easy feat. the NNW EWE dpes ok,
but of course does not have the power the beverage had. I still look for CHAK
from time to time, but AK has not been common this season at all. CX just have
not been good.

Re: [IRCA] Another Alaskan

2014-12-03 Thread Patrick Martin
Theo,

I got Tauranga 1000 also QSL'd back in the 60s, but from down here. For some
reason I never logged NZ from AK, but plenty of Australians. As you know, I
made up for it years later. hi.

Even on the JA beverage, Alaska MW stations are not at all common here.
Altho 529 Level Island is very routine but no so the BCB stations.
Yukon
and NT are even less common as in never. Something could be lurking
  on

Dennis,

I think when South Pacific conditions are really good and KEWE is at 5 KW ND, I
will hear it, as 740 Kihei is pretty regular mixing or on top of KCBS. The
easiest Hawaiian these days, no matter what night is KPUA 670. I can generally

1370 WSHV South Hill VA noted for the second time in a week after sunset

ID as 1370 and 96.7. I suspect that it is NOT using 41 watts. The
Christmas format may be helpful in finding it.

Both 900 and 1570 are relatively quiet in Southern California. KUAU has the
highest power in Hawaii; 15 kW full time.

The only Hawaiian I have logged is KHLT-1040. KCBS makes Kihei impossible.
670 is a mess; mostly Simi Valley and a little KBOI.

740 Kihei and KUAU-1570 are triplexed with the KMVI-900 tower, which I
went to on my honeymoon in 2001. At that time KAOI-1110 was diplexed and
KUAU was dark. KAOI has since moved to another site.

[IRCA] TP 3 Dec Victoria version

2014-12-03 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
It was a morning made for SDRs. The first hour or so of listening
was accounted for with 3 minutes of scanning; things were a little
more interesting after 1508UT, when HLAZ started to fade up, and a
little bit of a buzz happened on the upper band.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not quite; HLAZ was pretty readable at times.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1566 HLAZ woman in CC 1514UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

747 JOIB woman talking //774 1538UT. NHK mention, then s/off anthem
and chimes 1540UT
774 JOUB woman in JJ //747 1538UT; s/off reasonably audible, though
missed call ID.

1575 VoA woman SE Asian language 1523UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

1386 NHK2 woman in JJ 1527UT //774
1557 female vocal mx 1512UT, only heard briefly.

Strongish het, no or near imaginary audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

1098 1314 1404 1422 1476 1494 1512pretty eclectic mix.

best wishes,

Nick

There is also the Audiovox IHD-P01A, sometimes available at Walmart.
It is nearly identical to the Insignia receiver.
