Re: [IRCA] [mwdx] 1560 NYC off

2015-02-17 Thread Rick Lewis
Hi Dennis,
I think KNZR was a clear channel allotment when it came on the air in the 1930s
as KPMC. (1932, I think.)
I don't know when the 1560 in NYC came on the air.

Quite a few stations west of WQEW are daytimers with critical hours authority.

A little trivia. WQEW is authorized to use its daytime facilities until sunset

2015-02-17 Thread Les Rayburn
Gary Owens was also the original voice of Space Ghost in the 1960's HB
cartoon show. While I've never worked with Mr. Owens, I've had the good
fortune to work with the current Space Ghost, Mr. George Lowe. George is
a big fan of Gary.

A few months ago, I had a chance to shoot a TV commercial with Adam West
and Julie Newmar. It's kind of cool to walk around with Batman,
Catwoman, and Space Ghost all in your cell phone contacts list. :-)

Gary was very talented, and will be missed by several generations of
fans. Somewhere out there on the Ghost Planet, I hope he's hosting a
really swinging party.

Bill must have had quite a lot of fun at Grayland this morning as Asian

was only from 1430-1515, it was obvious that Asian signals were well above
average for the middle of winter.

594-JOAK was setting the pace as the strongest TP at my 1430 start time, with
very good signals in and out all session long. Around 1440 the Japanese big
guns on 693, 747, 774 and 828 seemed to hit their peak strength, with all of
them having good audio peaks through the splatter. 972-HLCA and 1134-KBS also
were pretty vibrant around the same time, with 972-HLCA managing its best
signals of the new year (very good) with male-female Korean conversation at
1455. Besides these big guns 603-HLSA and 657-Pyongyang were both in and out
at a fair level during this short sunrise enhancement boost, although nothing
more exotic seemed to be showing up on the low band. The high band seemed to
be somewhat overlooked in the propagation bonanza with only fair peaks in and
out from 1566-HLAZ around 1500, with the other high band regulars on 1503,
1575 and 1593 missing in action. As yesterday the sunrise enhancement boost
proved to be of short duration, with most of the Asians packing it i
n by 1515. Despite the short session the NHK big guns and 972-HLCA sounded
very vibrant here during sunrise enhancement, and I'm sure that Bill W. was
able to record several far more potent (and exotic) Asian signals than those
that showed up here at this mediocre location.

Re: [IRCA] 1560 NYC off

2015-02-17 Thread Rick Dau
And according to Earl Higgins, KCJJ in Iowa City (which was on 1560 with 1 kw
back in the day) was required to SIGN OFF COMPLETELY at Iowa City sunset to
protect KPMC and then allowed to sign back on at Bakersfield sunset! Is that
true? I asked KCJJ's current owner (someone who wasn't even involved with the
station until 1994) about that, and he says that was never the case. But, then
again, his knowledge of station history is a bit foggy. He keeps denying that
they signed off 1560 for good on October 13, 1998 with the Beatles' The End,
when I KNOW that they did, because I recorded the darn thing. 73, Rick Dau

Now getting Spanish programming. Radio Locator doesn't show any likely
domestics with Spanish, so I suspect Mexico, in which case I suspect Mexico
City, the one with the highest power. However, I have been having a lot of
problems with images this season, so who knows what I am actually hearing?
Just noted Radio Nacional de Venezuela at 2135. Nothing listed. Some
sort of image from Cuban shortwave, since they sometimes run the Venezuelan
program? Might be what I'm hearing on 6010. Now at 2138 sounds like
Mariachi music.

Quite a few stations west of WQEW are daytimers with critical hours authority.

A little trivia. WQEW is authorized to use its daytime facilities until sunset

2015-02-17 Thread Dennis Gibson
The FCC history cards say KNZR was first licensed as experimental W6XAI on
February 12, 1935 then changed to KPMC in November of 1936. W6XAI experimented
with wide band high fidelity transmissions.

As for WQEW I will defer to my friend Scott Fybush. I couldn't find the history
cards where I usually find them in the FCC database. Maybe he knows where they
are.

I don't know but asked someone who might.

As for the WQEW/KNZR situation the only unusual thing I could find is that KNZR

stations are 50 kW full time.

It has PSSA in February from 6:00 to 8:00; 32 watts dropping to 25 watts. That
must be it. It has PSSA for two hours every month; 41 watts dropping to 26
watts in April, May, June and September and 32 watts dropping to 25 watts the
other months. I never see any discussion of PSRA and PSSA in all of the talk
about cheaters.

I have seen discussions regarding the accuracy of the PSRA and PSSA charts in
the FCC database. Several smart people and some research suggest that the
charts were issued in late February of 2007 and recalled a week or so later.
Does anyone want to tackle that topic?

2015-02-17 Thread Rick Lewis
Dennis,
I don't rrecall exactly when, (I think it was after I left Bakersfield), but I
think the 25Kw day power for KPMC/KNZR began in the late 1980s.
I remember them as 10Kw day and night.
They mainly signed off at midnight till the early 70s, then ran till 1 AM or
later.
They had so many local sports commitments that a few Saturday nights they'd run
live Bakersfield College sports, and then they'd run tape-delayed sports
events, sometimes until nearly 5:45 AM sign-on.

I don't know but asked someone who might.

As for the WQEW/KNZR situation the only unusual thing I could find is that KNZR
is a grandfathered Class A; 25 kW daytime and 10 kW nighttime. Most Class A
stations are 50 kW full time.

true? I asked KCJJ's current owner (someone who wasn't even involved with
the station until 1994) about that, and he says that was never the case.
But, then again, his knowledge of station history is a bit foggy. He keeps
denying that they signed off 1560 for good on October 13, 1998 with the

2015-02-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Stan Chambers started with KTLA in 1947. KTLA did a couple specials on his
life. I recorded both. I first watched the old crew on Stan Chambers, Larry
McCormick, and Hal Fishman (anchor) back in the 70s, when Bob and I went to LA.
We interviewed a lot of old celebrities. Then 1985 when I got my big dish, KTLA
ran a feed of their 10 PM News nightly. Then in 1986 we got the first Super
Station package which included KTLA. I still have the Super Station pack on
Dish today. A new crew now, but the news dept is named after Hal Fishman who
died of cancer in 2007. He was there for 30+ years. Also one of the KTLA
buildings is also named after Stan Chambers. I miss their news a lot. I have a
lot on tape and DVD too.

Re: [IRCA] [mwdx] 1560 NYC off

2015-02-17 Thread Lawrence Stoler
WQXR became WQEW on Dec. 2, 1992 and the standards format lasted until the
end of 1998.

ABC Disney entered into an eight year local marketing agreement (LMA where
Radio Disney would be put on that 50,000 watt signal and the Times would
handle the license, the log requirements and make sure the programming was
heard. This continued until Disney took over running the facility in 2007.

They paid $40 million to purchase that signal. Obviously today, that
station isn't worth that much.

I think the price Family Radio paid to buy WQEW was $12 million.

The CP to increase to 25 kW daytime was granted in November of 1994. The
license to cover was granted almost exactly a year later.

 Dennis,
I don't recall exactly when, (I think it was after I left Bakersfield), but I

I remember them as 10Kw day and night.
They mainly signed off at midnight till the early 70s, then ran till 1 AM or
 later.
They had so many local sports commitments that a few Saturday nights they'd
run live Bakersfield College sports, and then they'd run tape-delayed sports
events, sometimes until nearly 5:45 AM sign-on.

As for the WQEW/KNZR situation the only unusual thing I could find is that
KNZR is a grandfathered Class A; 25 kW daytime and 10 kW nighttime. Most
Class A stations are 50 kW full time.

Quite a few stations west of WQEW are daytimers with critical hours

A little trivia. WQEW is authorized to use its daytime facilities until
sunset at KNZR in Bakersfield, CA; three extra hours. I don't know why.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-17

2015-02-17 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Bill must have had quite a lot of fun at Grayland this morning as Asian
propagation improved dramatically, producing the best signals of the new year
here for 594, 693, 747, 774, 972 and 1134 (KBS). Although the session here was
only from 1430-1515, it was obvious that Asian signals were well above average
for the middle of winter.

972-HLCA and 1134-KBS also
were pretty vibrant around the same time, with 972-HLCA managing its best
signals of the new year (very good) with male-female Korean conversation at
1455. Besides these big guns 603-HLSA and 657-Pyongyang were both in and out at
a fair level during this short sunrise enhancement boost, although nothing more
exotic seemed to be showing up on the low band. The high band seemed to be
somewhat overlooked in the propagation bonanza with only fair peaks in and out
from 1566-HLAZ around 1500, with the other high band regulars on 1503, 1575 and
1593 missing in action. As yesterday the sunrise enhancement boost proved to be
of short duration, with most of the Asians packing it in by 1515. Despite the
short session the NHK big guns and 972-HLCA sounded very vibrant here during
sunrise enhancement, and I'm sure that Bill W. was able to record several far
more potent (and exotic) Asian signals than those that showed up here at this
mediocre location.

good level around 1440; best signals of the new year so far

good level through Freedom 970 splatter at 1455; best signals of the new year

2015-02-17 Thread Bill Whitacre
Trouble with SDRs Gary is that you're never sure how much 'fun' you've had 'til
later on.

Things were definitely good enough to add some recordings between the usual TOH
and BOH stuff.

I'll try a better summary later on from the library - after a crab omelette at
the Blue Bouy!

2015-02-17 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Hi, Bill! Hope you are having fun at Grayland! What's the local noise
situation now. Nick mentions that it has increased markedly compared to
the past. I haven't been there for 3 years, I believe (with you and Harold
Sellers.). Re SDRs: I like having the SDR available to record when
conditions warrant. I have not gotten into automatically recording each
morning while I sleep, and then reviewing later. Not quite as exciting as
being there in person, and noticing that conditions are hot! 73,...Walt
