[IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 6-27
Hello All, Tom R. certainly brought the luck with him this morning as Kiwi propagation hit a legendary level around 1240-- resulting in obscure Kiwis coming out all over the band. Stations like 936-Chinese Voice (1 kW) sounded healthy indeed, while the new 576-Star (2.5 kW) made its first appearance. The new 702-Magic also managed a good signal around 1217 as the semi-local on 700 mysteriously left the air for five minutes. The freakish NZ propagation was every bit as good as what Chuck and I experienced last July, and both Tom and Chuck were recording it all. Who knows how many Kiwi stations they will come up with after reviewing all the .wav files-- maybe another NZ record? The session was the first to feature three DXers setting up at Rockwork 4 with serious antennas, and one of the UnID sleeping motorists at the site apparently didn't care for the commotion, driving off in a huff. The propagation sounded pretty ordinary around 1200, with the moderate-level Kiwis owning all the frequencies except for 531 (a pesky Oz station, maybe 4KZ again?). Chuck didn't seem very impressed with the signal levels, and after setting up his antennas and Perseus he caught some sleep before the drive back home. Tom and I kept checking the Kiwi signal levels until around 1230, when it seemed like a major breakthrough occurred-- causing almost every NZ station to come up dramatically in strength. 936-Chinese Voice is one of few 1 kW Kiwi MW stations, and when it reaches a decent signal level at Rockwork 4 the NZ floodgates are really open. Tom was probably enjoying the best Kiwi propagation of his DXing career, while I was checking obscure NZ stations all over the band. Unlike the spectrum recorders I could only track them down one at a time, but it was still a wild and thrilling ride. I'm very happy that Tom was able to enjoy such freakishly good Kiwi propagation on his first visit to Rockwork 4-- it isn't always this good, Tom! 558 Radio Sport Invercargill, NZ (Presumed) One of the ultra-rare Kiwis that only shows up during exceptional, all-NZ propagation. Re: [IRCA] Grayland, not Rockworks
Gary - My antenna was an 18' x 18' corner fed loop. Tom had a right angle triangle. It's not a delta as there was no apex, and not a flag as there were 3 sides not 4. The vertical part of the right angle was a homebrew mast. The horizontal part of the right angle met the hypotenuse at a low tree branch maybe 20 feet away. Chuckback home after a 6.5 hour trip, 2.5 hours of which was sitting on I-5 waiting for a wreck to be inspected, detected, photographed, etc. Date: Sat, 27 Jun 2015 22:54:13 + From: d1028g...@comcast.net To: n...@ieee.org; irca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: Re: [IRCA] Grayland, not Rockworks Nick and Walt, My best guess is that Tom was using a miniature delta flag, while Chuck had a slightly larger flag antenna than he used last July (maybe 20' x 20' ?). I've posted a picture of the antenna setups at Rockwork 4 this morning, showing the perspective from the live DXer side of the turnoff. As you can see, Tom seems to be giving his balancing skills the ultimate test. https://app.box.com/s/aem0p4wlb238g014blztk74dyy9trqch 73, Gary DeBock (in Manzanita, OR, sorting through wacky Kiwi recordings) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] Grayland, not Rockworks
Nick and Walt, Thanks for your detailed DU-DX propagation assessments from Grayland and Masset. Gee Gary, you folks must have snarfed up all the Zedders before they got any further north. Compared with yesterday, today was a bit of a bust at Grayland, though I guess the expression a bad day's fishing may still apply. Bruce used the DKaz, while I used the superloop equivalent of what Chuck used down at Rockworks, so I think his mileage may be better, as the DKaz is a superior antenna by a few dB. During the Rockwork 4 DXing session this morning Chuck and I were wondering if Grayland was receiving the same kind of Kiwi fireworks that we were enjoying. This was the first serious A/B location test during one of these Kiwi stampedes, which I'm sure will be thoroughly investigated by all concerned. Although the start looked promising around 1030UT with the ZB stations in the middle of the band showing reasonable signals (NZ carriers started about 0530UT last night, so there may be something on the recordings), but started to fade away. HLAZ-1566 made a tentative appearance with a woman sounding Chinese at 1150UT, but generally, things sounded a little erratic and weak. Bruce heard Star on 900 mixing with Hawaii, so that should have pretty easy for you people. There wasn't a peep of Asian DX at the cliff this morning, Nick. It was a pretty average Kiwi-dominated session until about 1230, when the NZ floodgates seemed to open. Obscure Kiwi frequencies like 558, 576 and 936 suddenly came into play, with the 1 kW 936-Chinese Voice doing its best imitation of a big gun. It was almost wacky enough for a fanatical live DXer to consider getting a Perseus :-) Of course the real Perseus DXers (Chuck and Tom) made out like bandits. What sort of antenna was Tom using by the way? My best guess is that Tom was using a miniature delta flag, while Chuck had a slightly larger flag antenna than he used last July (maybe 20' x 20' ?). I've posted a picture of the antenna setups at Rockwork 4 this morning, showing the perspective from the live DXer side of the turnoff.
