Thanks for being the canary in the coal mine Colin.

It wasn't quite so bad on Gabriola Island; nearby Georgia Strait water
helps I guess. NHK2 on 909 and 1089 for example, though both were weak.
954 and 1143 also delivered reasonable audio at times, but except for 1566
the big guns seemed a little subdued.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-27

2015-09-27 Thread d1028gary
Despite Colin's negative report this morning's session did have some
interesting moments, including some unusually good signals from the middle band
Japanese. Overall Asian propagation did suffer a major drop off in comparison
to yesterday, but 1134-JOQR had its best signal of the season here late around
1340.

Early on around 1250 only the usual regular 1566-HLAZ had much energy, with
good signals at the beginning of the Japanese program. Other Asians were very
slow to come out of the noise, with the NHK big guns on 594 and 693 finally
managing fair peaks around 1315, and 1503-JOUK reaching a poor to fair level at
1320. 1566-HLAZ continued to be the only vibrant Asian until around 1335, when
the relatively obscure station 1134-JOQR began a pretty impressive run to rise
above the Vancouver splatter for about 5 minutes. Reaching fair to good peaks
at times, the female announcer's hyper-level Japanese speech cut through the
CKWX splatter quite well, reaching its best level of the new season (1134 is
usually dominated by KBS here). 1053-JOAR also made a fair appearance in the
Jammer's shadow, hitting equal strength at times. Late on around 1345 both
603-HLSA and 738-BEL2 reached threshold levels, but neither signal went
anywhere since the band quickly collapsed. Except for the middle-band Japanese
signals the session was pretty much of a clunker, but probably typical for late
September in a lean solar year.

Thanks Mmartin for getting back. BTW, I used to live in Mission Viejo way
back in another life. Bet it's grown! Am now sitting out the "seventh inning
stretch" of this game in an antenna restricted community in Redmond WA. I
managed to sneak in a few antennas, a Wellbrook loop and a couple of long
wires but it's a far cry from my previous location on Cape Cod.

Anyway, would like to get back to some of the utilities I used to do a few
years ago. Have some questions on setting up SeaTTY for Navtex.

NORMAL - how to set and when/why change
AFC local deviation - ?
AFC global deviation - ?
AFC on or off -- probably ON?
SQL on or off and what number (default is 50 but not sure what that means)

I am using an Elad SDR in CW mode, which I recall works best for data modes.

Also just curious where does the 1,700 for center frequency (default
sub-carrier) come from? is that SITOR B specific?

Any other tip, tricks or comments MOST appreciated.

Hints of plausible audio on 531, 558, 567, 603, 702, etc...

Chris,

I had to change laptops a couple of years ago (catastrophically, because of
a car accident), so I lost my SeaTTY program. I haven't replaced it yet.
I should. It's a great way to snag very unusual receptions on the edge of
the MW band. Chile, Argentina, Hawaii, etc I don't exactly remember the
settings, but, yes, there is that 1700 offset.

Re: [IRCA] [ABDX] 1710 possible

2015-09-27 Thread Les Rayburn
A Part 15 signal on 1710 KHz in the US would be illegal regardless of
power level, correct? If I'm not mistaken, Part 15 only allows
transmissions up to 1705 KHz.

Many amateurs operated Part 15 CW beacons on LF frequencies in the
1980's and 90's called "Lowfer" beacons. We also deployed Part 15
"Medfer" beacons on the high end of the AM band before the X-band filled
with stations. It wasn't uncommon for these 100 mw CW beacons to be
received out to a thousand miles or more.

Strangely, I've never logged a pirate or any other station on 1710 KHz
since the fishing buoys disappeared several years ago. Not from lack of
trying...I check it at home and in the car often.

A bit of a mystery tonight in Michigan. I was tuning around the band and
found a stronger than usual signal on 1710. Religious talk and Christian
pop music from what I could tell with a decent signal but horrible
distorted modulation (at times it sounded better using the FM mode on my
Perseus). There have been occasional mentions of Canada between songs.
Strangely I've also heard what sounds like current weather conditions read
by a female robo voice, similar to the TIS stations that rebroadcast NOAA
weather radio, but this doesn't sound like one of the usual TIS stations
that now populate 1710 from the East. This is sometimes given between
songs for about 30 seconds or so. 0500 UTC now and still going. A bit of
Googling returned a hit for CHIM FM out of Timmins, Ontario:

http://www.chimfm.com/

Note the reference to 1710 AM.

I have no confirmation or ID yet (that I can understand anyway) but
everything seems to point to this station (signal even seems best on the
North D-KAZ).

Anyone know what's going on here? If it's a Part 15 station then I
shouldn't be hearing it from here. Is anyone else hearing this one? How
about you Ontario guys?

I also found this thread on Radioinsight interesting:

I use SeaTTY for NAVTEX/FAX/DSC/RTTY. I haven't tried any other software.

Re: [IRCA] [ABDX] 1710 possible

2015-09-27 Thread Tim Tromp
Mystery solved. With a little help from some underground radio friends,
I've learned this was a test transmission originating somewhere around
Timmins, Ontario (roughly 480 miles NNE). The transmitter was 35 watts
into an inverted L antenna. The testing is for CHIM-FM's future 1710
transmitter that they reference on their website. The test broadcast I
heard wasn't officially CHIM but rather the person tweaking their
transmitter from what I gathered. It's unknown if CHIM plans on running
the same output power when 1710 goes live.

Here's a clip of what I heard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6GENjxJsfs

It's on again right now at 2358 UTC as I type this and the op hinted he
might boost it up to 50 watts tonight.

[IRCA] One for the RFI win column - improving ones radio love life.

2015-09-27 Thread R. Colin Newell
We have been in our new house for just over a year - it is the result of
over 10 years of saving and searching for the perfect place --

Perfect in that it is town and country, has underground utilities,
does not have any industry near by and is quiet electrically.

What I discovered after moving in is that there was a neighbour
using BPL network devices which delivered quite the clatter all over the
bands.
I had no idea which neighbour this could be - and when you think about it,
it could be anyone within 1/2 km or so.

Anyway - I started by e-mailing my 1st neighbour that was in the path of
the radio interference. He replied almost immediately and said, "Yea, I use
a BPL device to reach a part of my house that my wireless network does not
reach - but I am rarely in there so I will turn it off and let's see what
happens!"

He switched it off and the problem vanished. Yay! Problem solved!

It's not every day that things turn out this way.

One for the good guys!

Good DX all.

Re: [IRCA] West Coast TA watch - SEPT 27 (UTC)

2015-09-27 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Many carriers up here Don. Spread across the band from 153 to the high 1400’s.
Several producing audio with 1413 being the best, with two men talking in what
sounded like Russian. Only snippets of audio from 189. 1215 produced very poor
audio at time, otherwise just a carrier. The remainder of the audio producers
were too low to get the language. All these were heard in the period from 0245
to 04:10 when they started to fade down.

Mike in St Isidore, AB with Perseus and an EWE.

On Gabriola, quite good audio at times on 738 and 1017 in that time period,
solid carriers on NZ frequencies 1386 1008 1107 1179, Given that this
site hasn't been productive for DU's on past visits, either conditions are
very good, or the westerly DKaz is doing a better job than the Flags used
in the past
