[IRCA] TP 12 Dec Victoria version
The signal strength monitor said that 1200-1300UT was fairly lively this morning, unfortunately, the recorder wasn't set for that time. Otherwise 774 was the most likely to deliver a signal, but very often wasn't there at all. A bit of a sunrise enhancement 1535-1540UT, but that was mostly carriers. pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly): 774 JOUB defying Murphy by peaking across 1200UT, woman in clear Japanese after the pips. Its half-hearted return didn't start until 1440UT, but it defied Murphy again with a clear "JOUB NHKhoso" before anthem and music box after 1540UT. Have to tune up my Japanese, as it didn't really sound like "NHK dai ni hoso" that I was expecting. Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise): 1566 HLAZ I'm sure this is pushing it, but it was definitely a man in Chinese 1534UT, but with erratic fades; probably at this level on peaks not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be understood by a native speaker: 747 JOIB man and woman in Japanese, //774 Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) 828 JOBB woman in Japanese //774 1443UT 891 NHK pips, man talking, Japanese inflection; 594 wasn't there, but its brief snippets of audio sounded like this but did not coincide 972 woman talking , maybe Korean 1447UT 1287 pop vocal music, 1547UT very weak for about 30 seconds Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter) 738 873 1575 1593 best wishes, Nick ___ ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] Elad SDR question
> > Hi Neil, > I own an Elad FDM-S2, and it can certainly record, playback, and display the entire MW band (and even greater bandwidth if desired) in an unattended fashion. You'll see the signal strength display, the waterfall, and the spectrum display, and you can "zoom" in for more visual detail if desired. The particulars of doing this depend of the software you use, as you're not limited to Elad's own program (in fact, the Elad FDM-SW2 software is my least favorite choice; I prefer HDSDR or Studio 1). Every SDR program I know of has either built-in scheduling / recording features or can use a 3rd party utility to accomplish the same thing. The utility "MESTOR" is very popular with the Perseus SDR for instance. The recorded spectrum can be played back in any mode you like: SSB, AM, Synchronous-AM, CW, etc. When you are doing the recording you are not recording "by mode". You are capturing data that represents the entire "raw" swath of frequencies, and you can then use whatever mode, bandwidth, AGC, noise reduction, etc. that you like, over and over again during playback. That's a big part of the allure of SDRs is that you can try various settings and combinations again and again, without missing any of the DX that might be there. 73, Guy Atkins Puyallup, WA > > > - > From: Neil Bell> To: irca@hard-core-dx.com > Cc: > Date: Thu, 10 Dec 2015 23:06:01 -0800 > Subject: [IRCA] Elad SDR question > Does anyone know if the Elad waterfall and signal strength display can > display and record the *entire MW band* (530-1710 kHz) for a period of time > specified using the system clock (unattended recording). > > Can the recorded signals then be listened to in SSB mode even if the > original recording was done using AM? > > Comments appreciated > > Neil, KJ6FBA > > > > - ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 12-12 (Japanese Revival)
After finishing more late night antenna work at 1200 a check of the band was made, and the Japanese big guns certainly seemed to have come out of hibernation. 594, 693, 747, 774, 828 and 1134 all were managing healthy audio in and out, while most of the other Asians (especially on the high band) seemed to be comatose. 594-JOAK was the best of the bunch, hitting good peaks in and out from 1200-1300 with fast-paced Japanese group conversation. The only non-Japanese to show up during the early morning hour were a presumed 738-BEL2 (weak Chinese in KCBS splatter) a poor-level 972-HLCA and the 1053-Jammer. The usual high band regulars on 1566, 1575 and 1593 weren't even managing a carrier at the time. The chance to finally hear some energetic TP's this month was worth the temporary loss of sleep, especially since these Asians have a recent habit of sinking back down into the noise well prior to sunrise. 594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Japanese group conversation at a good level at 1241 https://app.box.com/s/hjddsbzp8xgczprwzfcvcs6kiu0co6n6 693 JOAB Tokyo, Japan Japanese female speech at fair level at 1220 https://app.box.com/s/1qomqzif5a90mx6kjyqpgtfsy07js71f . 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) 7.5" loopstick C.Crane Skywave Ultralight + 15" FSL antenna ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on December 12
Like Gary, my SDR recording caught a few TPs just before 1300 today, but most drifted off into nothingness by 1330. 774 was the best of the lot with fair audio at 1256. 747 and 828 weren't far behind, but all three gradual disappeared after 1305. 693 1053 and 972 made feeble attempts at audio at 1320 or so. There were also weak carriers on 594 702729 738 765 981 1566 and maybe a few others.
