[IRCA] RE 1140 Cuba - Surco

2015-12-23 Thread Saul Chernos
Hi Mark,
I'm sure WRVA is OK in its primary coverage, or at least one would think it
would be.
Thanks for the list with parallels. Last few nights would have been great for
you at the seafront.

Actually, besides Radio Surco, there are 5 other Cubans on 1140!

R. Bayamo, Media Luna // 1150 & 1620

R. Cadena Agramonte, Camaguey // 910

R. Mayabeque, La Salud // 1040

R. Musical Nacional, Santa Clara // 590

R. Rebelde synchros // 670, 1180, 5025 and a gaggle of others

WQBA will probably show up in the "stew" as well. Poor WRVA!

Not sure if last night's Surco is the unIDed one that's been dominant the last

[IRCA] TP 23 Dec Victoria version

2015-12-23 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

An oddball mix this morning with sunrise enhancement from Brisbane

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1116 and 774 came close, and without splatter would have made it

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

774 JOUB English lessons man and woman 1432-34UT

1116 4BC from 1439UT, man in DU English, tele talk with woman, by
1447UT, was this level, "4BC ho ho ho" ID, and 4BC Brisbane jingle,
then at 1541UT about a minute of sunrise enhancement with woman
talking, a commercial with 1800 number and a different 4BC Brisbane jingle

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

the above passing through

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

612 4QR? tuneless singing (someone in studio?), man talking DU
English inflection 1534UT

738 rhythmic pop music 1159 and 1320UT
972 pop music, and man talking 1413-16UT, didn't really sound Korean
though; no idea, though HLCA is the most likely suspect

1566 man talking, barely there 1537UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

891

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Meet the 3" FSL Tecsun PL-380

2015-12-23 Thread d1028gary
David, Ira, and Walt,

Thanks for your comments on the 3" FSL PL-380!

Walt, I think that this radio has a better chance of getting through airport
TSA checkpoints than a stand-alone FSL (which looks like a ring of dynamite).
The FSL size is small, and they might actually believe you when you say that it
is a radio antenna.

DXing performance does seem to be all that I could have hoped for. Sensitivity
and nulling ability seem to be in a new league for portables, and I wish that
you could try one of these out there in Hawaii. Fortunately, I have a huge
stock of the 100mm x 20mm x 3mm ferrite bars (from Ukraine's Donbass region)
already here in Puyallup, so there are no supply bottlenecks due to Putin's
shenanigans.

Congratulations, Gary!  I'm very interested in seeing the results.  Perhaps
one will be able to fly with this, something I haven't been able to do with
the larger loops!  Very pertinent, as I sit enjoying the band in Kauai,
wishing that I had a better antenna!  73,  Walt Salmaniw

2015-12-23 Thread d1028gary
Thanks for your comments on the 3" FSL Tecsun PL-380 model, Scott.

After more testing today I'm pretty sure that this model will provide some
serious new excitement for those who build (or obtain) one. For those who are
interested, I have posted a detailed design photo of the modified radio at
https://app.box.com/s/my5xc5sberwuom5w7fir8qfsjr39yiqf   Since the Si4734 DSP
chip tunes the radio the DXer gets all the benefits of FSL sensitivity without
needing to peak a variable capacitor.

I've remained immune to the FSL obsession until now...but this might just
have to happen to one of my 380s this year.  Very tempting! Nice work, Gary!

[IRCA] AURORAL DX…..ELAD Captures….11 NEW Stations Heard

2015-12-23 Thread Robert Ross
Hi Guys:

The past few Nights have been great for Auroral DX on the AM BCB
Conditions to the South have been superb with lots of Deep South Stations being
heard as far as South America. Although I haven't had a lot of time to review
the ELAD Files, I have managed to hear 11 NEW Stations, also some CALL LETTER
Changes and some other interesting RELOGS. I still have a lot of Captures to
review from the event, but I wanted to get some of these logs out while they
were still current. I am confident there will be LOTS more DX to be pulled from
the remaining Captures.

So here is Part One of the Auroral DX Catcheswith LOTS more to follow.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Everyone

[IRCA] Meet the 3" FSL Tecsun PL-380

2015-12-23 Thread d1028gary
Hello All,

Portable antenna fanaticism hit a new high (or low, depending upon your
perspective) this early morning. The photo posted at
https://app.box.com/s/lxy3b5srx5f66qg4hj6nabxt5gchee3f
shows the 3" FSL Tecsun PL-380, with a directly connected 3" bar FSL composed
of 8 lightweight Russian surplus 100mm x 20mm x 3mm ferrite bars. The radio's
internal Si4734 DSP chip tunes the 300 uH FSL antenna coil throughout the MW
band, so that the DXer simply needs to tune the radio (and get the huge
sensitivity boost). Initial indications are that the modified portable is the
most sensitive one ever tested, with a science-fiction-like ability to null
even local pest stations. Construction cost is cheap, also-- about $95 US.

This is the first portable to have a directly-connected FSL powering its
operation-- and all indications are that it has the potential to be the
stand-alone Ultralight of choice for both domestic and transoceanic DXers. It
outperforms both the 7.5" loopstick PL-380's and CC Skywaves in sensitivity and
nulling ability by a significant degree. Construction information will be
forthcoming.

73 and Good DX,
Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)

One of my recordings earlier this year:
http://www.qsl.net/wa1ion/audio1/r_surco_cuba-1140_20150324_z.mp3

"Transmite CMIP, Radio Surco, desde Ciego de Avila, capital de la locucion
cubana."

Fairly regular here at the coast, one of 4 different Cubans (!) attempting to
"stick it" to WQBA Miami.
