A considerably better than expected morning, though with lots of
splash, and the bulk of the lift was just before 1300UT rather than later

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native
speaker, at least briefly):

828 JOBB 1244UT, English lessons.
1566 HLAZ woman in Japanese 1244UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

567 JOIK men and women talking and laughing //594 1236UT
594 JOAK as above //567 1238UT
774 JOUB woman in Japanese 1332UT; underneath was a man talking //612 for 3LO.
891 JOHK pips, then man mentioning NHK //594 which was weaker, 1300-01UT
972 HLCA man in Korean 1234UT
1053 Korean jammer 1235UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

747 JOIK man in Japanese //828 1235UT
837 JOQK woman and man in Japanese //594 1302UT
1134 JOQR assumed w/rock music, male vocal sounded Japanese 1254UT,
chimes and pip on hour mostly buried by splash.

1287 JOHR man and woman in Japanese 1302UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

531 man mumbling across the hour 1300UT
612 4QR woman and man, news?, DU English inflection, 1301UT
846 NHK1 man talking //567, 1253UT, a bit of a dig to hear this.
1098 man mumbling 1252UT
1323 woman talking 1247UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated
or ravaged by splatter)

Re: [IRCA] 1152 at 15:00 this morning

2016-04-05 Thread Chuck Hutton
Nick:

1269 appears in our Nick-Chuck-Bruce 2014 Grayland DXpedition report.

Yes, a coastal report would be nice. I've collected all the logs from Gary,
Bill W and myself with the intent of adding a sheet to the Grayland Master Log
and making it into a NW Coastal Log. When will it happen? Not real soon, as I
haven't even gotten around to listening to most of my DX from 2015, including 3
Rockworks trips plus a Grayland trip.

Thanks for pointing that out Chuck. Your contributions are always helpful.

It is difficult to keep track of all these, as the Grayland Master
Log references only two loggings of 558 in 20 years, the last in
2013.I wasn't aware it had been logged so frequently since then,
hence my use of the adjective "rare" on the coast. I think we had
more than two loggings of 558 from the infrequent visits to Jordan
River in the 80s, plus the logging in town using the laughable tuned
loop. 558 has not particularly become a more difficult frequency
here, and the Flags and SDR techniques are a great improvement on
what I was using then.

1152 is an interesting addition in recent years, as I know Bill has
logged it at least 3 times in that period. That wasn't heard in
earlier years to my recollection, though may be the product of our
Drift Net DXing techniques using SDRs.

1269 I'm afraid is the stuff of legend in any references I can find
right now, as is "etc". I know Patrick Martin heard 6XM-1188 a
number of years ago, and it was heard once at Sans Souci in 2013.

I like Walt's idea of a coastal reference. Do I like it enough to
do the work? We'll see. The Grayland Master Log is certainly an
excellent starting point.

best wishes,

Nick

done little updating of it since we stopped having group
DXpeditions to Grayland about 6 years ago.

I know that the ABC W. Australia stations on 531 and 558 have been
heard in Victoria using an unamplified tuned box loop antenna
(indoors; predates computers obviously, but within living memory),
but neither are heard now, and even on the coast are rare.

But Bill Whitacre has heard 1152 in the last
year: http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_grayland12.php
also hearing BBC, so unless someone else on that channel has started
BBC broadcasts...

[IRCA] Laptop for Elad FDM-S2 Use

2016-04-05 Thread Les Rayburn
I could use some advice on computers from those more experienced.

I have a Sony Viao laptop that I’d like to use as the primary computer with my
Elad FDM-S2. My primary interest is in recording as much of the FM band as
possible in I/Q mode during openings. My plan is to install an external 4TB USB
hard drive, and save recordings to that disc for later review.

I also sometimes use an AirSpy SDR for the same purpose.

The laptop is an Intel i7 CUP @1.73 GHz.
6 GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1
64 Bit OS

Would this computer suffice, or do I need something better for the effort?

Re: [IRCA] AM Revitalization: From Hard Facts to Whimsical Fantasy

2016-04-05 Thread Rick Lewis
Colin,
We stream mainly oldies, but a few other specialized shows, 24/7, and
usually it's trouble-free.
And as good as a local FM station would sound.
Been doing Internet radio for more than 12 years, and running my own station
for nearly eight of them.
Yes, problems can occur, (we had a five-week period when Comcast would get
choppy during nighttime hours), and sometimes there are other Internet
issues, but I'd say it works well more than 95 percent of the time.
As Chuck indicates, , your experience isn't typical.
It might be partially due to instability of the stations you select, your
wireless network, or you could be trying to listen to AAC+ streams on a WiFi
radio that does mp3.
But your experience should be better.
I'd first try listening to streams that are specifically mp3.
(In this increasingly mobile world, many stations are using AAC+, which is
iPhone-friendly, but may not be compatible with your Internet device..)

Come on, Colin. If streaming was really that bad, no one would do it.
Perhaps you have a local problem. While you fix it, I'll continue listening
to my streaming all day.

Re: [IRCA] AM Revitalization: From Hard Facts to Whimsical Fantasy

2016-04-05 Thread Patrick Martin
Colin,

Streaming works great here. Maybe it is the rural area or my speed (60+), but I
rarely have trouble with it. The house is wifi'd and both Jeremy & I use it all
of the time. Live radio is fine for DXing, but not to my taste in listening any
longer. Few choices here and distant reception is plagued with too much noise
and fading for my liking. I am spoiled with streaming.

Mark,

Radio is not dead, but in many areas it is dying, especially AM. FM has still
some energy left. At least for a few years. If it wasn't that FM was pretty
much noise free, it would be on the chopping block too. Add to that IBOC with
several streams. But I stream a lot here and it is great. On occasion there is
a glitch, but they are few and far between. I was listening to 2GB streaming
this morning while lying in bed.

Chuck, it's a valuable resource (the Master List), as it allows for a quick
verification of likely targets, and would decrease the number of unids and
tentative logs. In Masset, I have it open, along with PAL as the go-to
resource, since I don't have live internet available to me. 73,Walt

Yes, Bill did hear them. I guess I wish there was some sort of "central
list" of what TPs have been heard anywhere along the west coast. The
Grayland Master List is a marvelous resource. I did check it, and there
was no mention of the W Australian on 1152. I guess it would be a huge job
to maintain that list. I think it was Chuck Hutton who created the Master
List in the first place. My kudos go out to him! 73,Walt

But Bill Whitacre has heard 1152 in the last

also hearing BBC, so unless someone else on that channel has started
BBC broadcasts...

Re: [IRCA] AM Revitalization: From Hard Facts to Whimsical Fantasy

I have a Wifi radio as well - never use it. I can find an interesting
stream and listen to it for 10 or 15 minutes
then it either vanishes or the radio needs to be re-booted.

One of the reason why I never got on the SDR bandwagon - recording the
entire spectrum while you are sleeping
and then "DXing" when you get around to it, is not DXing - it is more like
"Binge watching the Soprano's" on Netflix.

If it ain't live, it ain't DXing...

Streaming is the same - it is sort of live and often delayed 10 to 15s or
more and it's pathway to you is exceedingly fragile.

Country music is surprisingly popular with young people too and radio still
factors in there as well. Today's country scene has a lot of performers in the
18-34 age group and many fans that age too. Even in Boston, in former years a
weak country market, there are two well-rated country stations (101.7, 102.5).
A younger audience has fuelled much of that.

Same thing applies to hip-hop / urban / R&B / dance music. Boston's 94.5,
96.9, and 107.9 have a significant listener base.

Internet access in a mobile environment is still not a 100% reliable option nor
is it necessarily free / cheap.

Even at the office, lab, workshop, etc. PC-based online options such as Pandora
might not be available since employers often block entertainment sites. Of
course music listening via cellphone, iPod, etc. remains on the table but radio
is still well represented in workplace music listening. Sometimes you want
some news, weather, sports, and stock market information in the mix.

So radio in general is still alive across most demographics but that's mostly
FM.

AM is still in for a bumpy ride no matter how you slice it. High electrical
noise levels are part of the problem. Lower fidelity than FM factors in too.
But the biggest problem, in my estimation, is programming that ranges from
bland and boring to irrelevant through silly to downright offensive. Very
little either to engage the mind or to make you want to dance. "My candidate's
better than your candidate" / "My God's better than your God" / "My team's
better than your team" gets a little stale after a while.

Re: [IRCA] AM Revitalization: From Hard Facts to Whimsical Fantasy

2016-04-05 Thread Patrick Martin
Les,

It is interesting you mentioned how young people get new music. You are right.
I just asked Jeremy who lives with me (kind of like an adopted son), who is
nearly 21. His answer was he gets new music from Pandora and other sites. As
soon as a new song or album comes out, it streams and he can listen to it. Many
sites offer the music for free and others you can buy the new album. For years
now if I want pop, standards, ethnic, K-Pop, J-Pop, German, French, Russian,
you name it, it is all on You Tube. My old Dodge Caravan has cassette so audio
out on the computer to audio in on the cassette deck. With my new Caravan, it
has CD, or MP3, so I can either record to a CD from You Tube or to an MP3
player. I rarely buy music these days. It is all online somewhere.
