Thanks for your generous comments, Colin and Walt. Thanks also for your

It's certainly true that this style of live DXing isn't suitable for everyone,
Mark, but the untold part of the story (which isn't commonly shared by most
TP-DXers, including me) is that the large FSL antennas have demonstrated a
DU-DX reception advantage in side-by-side comparisons with much larger
broadband antennas on the lower MW frequencies (531, etc.) at ocean cliff
sites. There are several low-band DU's (531-More FM and 585-Radio Ngati Porou,
for example) that have been repeatedly received on FSL antennas at ocean cliff
sites but either very rarely or not at all with any broadband antennas
(anywhere on the west coast). As for varactor tuning, nobody has yet succeeded
in adapting the concept to FSL antennas without upsetting the antennas'
razor-sharp (High-Q) tuning system. This system provides the critical
single-optimized-frequency reception advantage that has given the FSL antennas
their relative success on the lower MW frequencies at ocean cliff sites.

Re: [IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 7-7

2016-07-07 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA

A common practice here on the East Coast is to SDR-record the band while
sitting in a vehicle at a suitable shore site for a couple of hours starting
just before sunset.

A bit of live DX might be done during the session but most of the analysis is
done in comfortable indoor surroundings later on.

This technique is useful since most people's home QTH's are RF-noise-riddled
and seldom ideally placed for DX.

Actually sitting outside to DX would seldom be necessary since antennas are
broadband in most cases. Even tuned antennas can be adjusted by varactor
diodes, coupled to a feedline, and then either directly fed to a receiver
inside the vehicle or coupled to it inductively.

Colin, the only noise would be from 18 wheelers. There are no electrical
lines around. Gary DX's outside, which is pretty incredible. I don't mind
dxing from inside a vehicle, like we used to at Sombrio, and still do
occasionally at Rose Spit. Outside, though, I'm with you, Colin. 73, Walt

[IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 7-7

2016-07-07 Thread d1028gary
Although most TP-DXers have come to accept the fact that ocean cliffs do
enhance transoceanic DX, the undeniable fact is that they also enhance
transoceanic weather fronts. Rain and wind combined to make for an interesting
session this morning, and sent most of the area's "sleeping squatters" into
panicked departures back to Portland. Steady rain drenched everything in sight,
temporarily knocking out two ICD-SX68 digital recorders. Everything else
survived, although the session's DU-DXing results seemed somewhat "watered
down."

The Kiwi big guns sounded healthy as usual but the more obscure NZ stations
(576, 585, 936 etc.) were missing in action. The most interesting frequency was
702, where the 10 kW Auckland station ran out of Magic in its fight with the Oz
big gun 2BL after 1211. The Sydney powerhouse finally demonstrated why it is
one of the prime DU targets in the Midwest, sending 702-Magic and its oldies
into complete oblivion with awesome S9 peaks throughout the rest of sunrise
enhancement. Its parallel 774-3LO was almost as strong, but suffered seriously
from Seattle splatter. Besides these 783-Access Radio made its first decent
appearance of the trip at 1241 with ethnic music and an unknown language
(sounding very much like Samoan to me, someone who hears too much of 531-PI).
1008-Newstalk ZB also showed up with a fairly decent signal at 1220 // a
stronger 1035, and 675-RNZ once again ruled over its 567 parallel (which has
sounded like it's on emergency power all three days, after having demolished
most of its signal along with its old tower). Overall the session was pretty
modest for Rockwork 4, but it's very easy to get spoiled here.

675   RNZ   Christchurch, NZ   Interview program with Mideast refugee at good
level // a weak 567 at 1248
https://app.box.com/s/ts9ra2pfcphx2blb6tmx8hmgg2jv2bk2

702   2BL   Sydney, Australia   Star of the soggy session with S9 ABC interview
program // 774 obliterating Magic after 1211
https://app.box.com/s/f0qfop5x7ymw1gbyowg65obveuqjwf6m

702   Magic   Auckland, NZ   Oldies at good level at 1211 before being
dispatched by the Oz big gun for the remainder of the session
https://app.box.com/s/jnmxrvyezt5mzerm0qpu939hnyjgzjbt

738   Radio Polynesie   Mahina, Tahiti   Instrumental music at meltdown level
at 1237; strongest DU of the session
https://app.box.com/s/3vk2thq7d2t78gsgdrh86k0sz65dp19n

783   Access Radio   Wellington, NZ   Wellington's multi-cultural station at
good level with apparent Samoan music and speech at 1241

heavy rain) +

Back to normal this morning. Tahiti, a touch of New Zealand? and
carriers, though a couple of the carriers (1053 and 1134) were
earlier and likely Asian.

738 Tahiti? light pop vocal 1101UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

the above passing through

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

2016-07-07 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
The 400 watt figure is direct from the mouth of one of the engineers with
Corus Entertainment, CHMJ's owner. It was posted in the "I Take pictures of
transmitter sites" facebook group I run.

Re: [IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 7-6 (Preliminary)

2016-07-07 Thread Tony Ward
I haven’t seen the original shot in many years Chuck, but it was not too fancy
— I used my mother’s Box Brownie! Here’s the location at Opapa/Te Aute…
39d 05m 53s South
177d 57m 10s East

The dipole is strung between the two towers which are aligned E/W. Ground
conductivity is outstanding on the Hawkes Bay Lowlands and takeoff to the
Oregon cliffs would be over the farmland and Lake Poukawa. I took several
shots, though the dipole is not easy to see and was surprised and excited to
come by them 65 years after first imaging the, right alongside the Main Road —
and to find the scene so little different really! Hope to post the images soon,
or send me your preferred email and I will send direct.

Re: [IRCA] CHMJ 730 to return to air

2016-07-07 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Strongly heard at S9 + 10 once again this morning at 14:14 UTC. Perhaps a
very weak cochannel audible at same time. Normally much stronger here in
Victoria with S9 + 40, so using their back up transmitter of 400 or 500
watts depending on source. Rainy day today which should help with the
original fire. 73, Walt
