[IRCA] TP 3 Sep Victoria version

2016-09-03 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A very Aussie morning as befits present geomagnetic conditions, yet a
couple of Asians too. There was probably some interesting DX
hiding, and not enough time to dig it out. Some of the loggings have
not been heard for quite some time.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

612 4QR woman talking with man //549 1321UT; possibly a couple of
others peaked at this level, as fading was fairly unpredictable.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

576 2RN jazz clarinet //621 1306UT
702 2BL country music 1250UT //612
738 likely Tahiti, rhythmic pop 1211UT and other times
828 JOBB man in Japanese 1231UT
1575 VoA man in SE Asian language 1309UT, not much on hour though

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

774 3LO pips, fanfare, ABC news 1200UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

531 laid back pop music 1208UT, strong carrier
549 2CR woman talking, sneaking through 550 splash, //612 and lagging
about 1/2 second, 1320UT
558 brief bit of choral music 1315UT, but didn't really sound
islandish? Assumed Fiji but now not so sure.

567 woman talking DU English? 1207UT
585 7RN ABC fanfare 1300UT, maybe someone else there also? Had
grabbed parallel with 576 a few minutes earlier, but 7RN lagging 2RN
by over a second.

594 3WV instrumental music //612, 702
621 3RN jazz guitar //576 1305UT
747 4QS country pop //612 1339UT
792 4RN joining the jazzy throng 1308UT //576
828 3GI instrumental music //702 1314UT
1053 Korean jammer 1210UT
891 5AN weak ABC fanfare 1330UT
1116 pop music presumed to be 4BC 1331UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

 603 765 855 882 1098

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] [CapeDX] Auroral conditions?

2016-09-03 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
I ran two captures, one at 8 p.m. EDT / 3 SEP ( UTC / 4 SEP) and one an
hour later.

The first was on the peak 75 deg. / null 255 deg. (TA) antenna and the other on
the peak 165 deg. / null 345 deg. (LA) antenna.

Lower band TA's from the Mediterranean region (and southward) were pretty good
on the first capture. Spain 855, Algeria 531, Morocco 612, Mauritania 783,
Canaries 1008, and Egypt 864 were among the bigger blasters. Also, with WBZ
IBOC off, two interesting things were noted: Their top-of-hour time pip is
spot-on instead of 8-10 sec. late AND Spain 1044 was sitting pretty with no
IBOC frying eggs to pester it.

The second capture on the southerly antenna showed a lot of the usual Cubans,
Puerto Ricans, and Colombians. Best Venezuelan was 750 Caracas.

I saw Bruce's email below and looked into the domestic channels on the south
antenna capture (0100 UTC).

1150 WDEL-DE mix WWDJ-MA
1170 Colombia inbooming, burying semi-local WFPB-MA and WWVA-WV
1330 WWRV-NY over WRCA-MA
1360 WDRC-CT dominant (WLYN-MA is in null)
1370 quite a jumble but WQLL-MD seemed slightly ahead of the pack; WTAB-NC,
WDEA-ME, WFEA-NH clanking around under.

None of the above receptions is unusual here.

Interesting domestic DX conditions Saturday evening, 9/3 1900-2000 EDT, perhaps
due to an extended period of geomagnetic disturbance. 1150 WDEL Delaware
dominant with Phillies baseball, 1170 WWLE Cornwall-Newburgh with R&B/soul
oldies, 1330 WHGM Maryland with Smash Hits dominant, 1360 WTOC New Jersey with
Radio Transformacion over WDRC Hartford, 1370 WJIP Ellenville with NY Mets
baseball (1450 WKIP listed as affiliate) over local WFEA Manchester. Still
more frequencies to check in RF spectrum captures...

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 3 September 2016

2016-09-03 Thread Nigel Pimblett
This morning definitely one of the more interesting ones of
late. Lots of signals on the borderline of audio, all apparently from
Australia. Those that were on the audio side of the line:

612 4QR BrisbaneTalk by a woman at 1220
702 2BL Sydney Traces of talk by a man at 1215 through
splatter from Calgary on 700.
774 3LO Melbourne Music, man speaking at 1208
828 3GI SaleFaint traces of talk at 1211
891 5AN AdelaideThe best signal of the morning, with
vocal by a woman at 1217, and noted ABC
news fanfare at 1230.
11164BC BrisbaneBits of talk noted at 1217

Several others just under the line, with strong carriers, including
747,792,855,and 936. The action was mainly limited to below 1200 khz
today, with 1548 not doing much, and only weak carriers in the X-band.

[IRCA] 1030: WBZ versus Noticias del Plata (Argentina) shoot-out on Cape Cod

2016-09-03 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Last night (UTC 0100 / 3 SEP) there was a pretty good tangle going on between
WBZ and Argentina on 1030.

Audio:
http://www.qsl.net/wa1ion/audio1/argentina+wbz-1030_20160903_0100z.mp3

WBZ is 53.6 miles (86.3 km) from here at a bearing of 319 degrees so somewhat
off the back of the Latin America SuperLoop (null ~ 345 deg.).

They theorize the quakes are caused by deep waste water injection wells. A
byproduct of oil well pumping is salt water which is pumped back into the
ground. It's an old practice but the newer injection well are deeper than in
the past.

Hi all - well apparently I put the DKAZ together correctly. These are a few
of the African and Middle Eastern logs from the night before last,
unfortunately the ELAD did no recordings last night. There are a whack more
as well - England, Spain, Wales, Scotland, Romania, Canaries. Directionally
it is just as planned, with the 'beam' right towards the Mediterranean,
nulling North America.

I'm happy with the results of the antenna implementation.

1. TURKEY - 891 kHz TRT 1 RADYO BIR (Antalya) 0258UTC: s/on with IS for
about a minute, 45-50 seconds of QRN, then time pips and s/on by woman at
TOH, good audio by 0300:15.

2. EGYPT - 864 kHz ERTU AL-QURAN AL-KARIM (Santah) 0258UTC: Quranic
chanting, some fading before TOH. No ID as chanting went through TOH, so
presumed. Good audio.

3. MOROCCO - 612 kHz SNRT Al Idaâ Al-watania (Sebaâ-Aioun) 0458 UTC: AA mx
program. Good audio.

4. MAURITANIA - 783 kHz RADIO MAURITANIE (Nouakchott) 0158UTC: s/off 1 hour
later than schedule. ID'd by guitar IS. Good - very good signal. After s/off

[IRCA] Mobile DX Recording Question

2016-09-03 Thread Marc DeLorenzo via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---

After much consideration, I have decided to go with a digital recorder for
Mobile DX with the JRC NRD-525. Specifically, the Tascam Dr-05:

https://www.amazon.com/TASCAM-Portable-Digital-Recorder-Version/dp/B00LU8K790/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472939226&sr=8-1&keywords=tascam+dr-05

It seems to be a less expensive version of the one recommended by Bill Nollman
in CT. Anyway, this one has everything I need: external line-in jack,
headphone jack, USB port, battery operated, nice LCD display.

Many thanks to all who responded to my querie with various suggestions: Russ
Johnson, Russ Edmunds, Bruce Conti, Nick Hall-Patch, Mark Connelly, and of
course, Mr. Nollman. All suggestions were excellent and I was amazed at the
response. DXers are always so willing to help with a problem!

Looking forward to some DXpeditions at local Cape Cod beaches in the upcoming
season.

Mark, audio recording with a laptop or digital device. One of my favorite
topics.

Option #1 - I’ll assume the laptop is Windows 7 or lower – in which case I have
a Turtle Beach USB sound card (looks like a small pager, no drivers for Win8 or
10) that I’ve been debating putting on eBay. Audio input is excellent and has a
built in microphone and switch on the device if you want to add comments as you
record.

Option #2 – digital recorder. Tons of options really expensive right down to
cheap. I prefer somewhere in the middle. My favorite digital recorder is the
Tascam DR07 (the older DR07 not the DR07 mkII). Recording quality is amazing
and with a 2GB card you can record for hours at 256kbps MP3. With a 16GB card
you probably can’t fill it up ever. Quality is excellent, controls are
excellent. The built in mic is good as well although a bit trickier to switch
over to than the USB “card”.

Option #3 – you can probably find dirt cheap mp3 recorders from Hong Kong for
under $10. IMHO you get what you pay for in this category. But for some peoples
ears it’s more than perfect.

Subject: [CapeDX] Mobile DX Recording Question

Mark Connelly has built for me an amplified whip antenna with magnetic base
that I can mount on the roof of my car for oceanfront DXpeditions. We tested
it in an RFI quiet zone - the local cemetery! - and it works fine with my JRC
NRD-525 receiver.

The problem is recording DX using Total Recorder on my laptop. The laptop
does not have an audio "line in" jack so I have been trying to use the
microphone jack. It records but the audio playback is quite distorted. On the
laptop I get the following message from Total Recorder:

"The level of the source signal is too high. Possibly the characteristics of
the sound source do not match those of the soundboard input (e.g. instead of
soundboard's line-in connector, the microphone-in connector is used.)
Recording is possible, but the quality of the recorded sound may be low."

Right. I noticed that. The question is what is the solution to the problem.
20 years ago I had an "attenuating cable" from Radio Shack that might solve
the problem. But, like a dummy, I through it away thinking that, "I'll never
have any use for that." I doubt that RS still carries this product.

So, is there a Total Recorder setting that might work? Or, should I scrap
Total Recorder and buy a portable digital recorder? If so, which one? A
digital recorder (with a line-in jack of course) would be better in that it is
smaller and would take up less space in the car.

Any help appreciated.

Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 9/2/16

2016-09-03 Thread d1028gary
Richard,

Sorry about the earthquake, and I hope that you, your house and equipment are
all OK. I know how disturbing it is to go through a major earthquake for the
first time-- unfortunately I've been through three of them (in California,
Japan and Washington).

Here at home we have personal experience with a severe earthquake-- the 6.9
Nisqually earthquake in 2002 shook our house like a leaf, and caused the entire
Puyallup Valley to vibrate like jello for about 2 minutes, opening up various
sinkholes of up to 5 feet deep in roads and yards. Some cracks opened up in our
ceiling drywall, but our basic house structure was undamaged (probably because
we live in a rambler). Everybody was paranoid of earthquakes for about a month
after that.

Gary:

This morning I was listening to a carrier on 702 kHz when a strong earthquake
hit shaking my house for about 90 seconds. USGS say it was 5.6 magnitude, one
of the strongest ever recorded in Oklahoma. The epicenter was about 40 miles
east of me. It was felt as far away as Omaha. My niece felt in Emporia KS.
Naturally it brought my listening session to abrupt end.

Have a good day.

Richard.

Re: [IRCA] [CapeDX] Mobile DX Recording Question

2016-09-03 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
I wasn't looking at email when this discussion started but am now going over
all the posts.

One thing that has not been mentions is RF interference FROM the digital
recording device. A laptop is more likely to introduce noise / spurious
signals than small hand-held recorders.

Old-school cassette recorders even had some degree of trouble with bias
harmonics (much like old-school TV sweep harmonics on ~15.7 kHz multiples). In
tough situations, however, cassette recorders may still be worth considering.
Maybe it's not too much of a stretch to think about keeping a battery-operated
portable one in any serious DXpedition kit. Run its output into the Total
Recorder, Audacity etc. equipped laptop later on.

Those who use Ultralights will seldom be using a PC-based recording set-up
because of the RFI issue.

>From Gary DeBock's numerous DXpedition posts, I have gleaned that, at various
>times, Edirol R09 and Sony ICDSX68 have been mentioned. Many of the reports
>don't say much about how audio was recorded. Not sure what mp3's were via
>patch cable or via speaker-to-mike.

If you look on Amazon you'll see that Sony makes quite a few recorders with the
"ICD" prefix. There are also several worthwhile models by Olympus, Archos,
Tascam, Marantz, and others.

Edirol is a more professional brand (aimed at musicians), with a price to
match. Its R-09 and R-05 clock in around $200 to $300 so probably overkill for
most applications.

As Bruce mentioned, the CC Witness and Pogo LX are completely usable for DX
recording. I have both.

This 2006 recording of Saudi Arabia 1521 made at Granite Pier (Rockport, MA)
was with the Pogo LX and is among the first direct-to-digital (i.e. no cassette
intermediary) DX recordings made in the car. Receiver was the Drake R8A.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/w913oj2m1m3qpas/dx_saudi_arabia-1521_20060503_2300z.mp3

The next year I got my first SDR (RFSpace SDR-IQ) followed by the Perseus in
'09 so the Pogo sort of went into mothballs.

The audio does sound slightly "artifacty" (for lack of a better term) but hey,
we're talking DX here, not the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

For me there are still some niche uses for portable digital recorders.

One of these is recording speech, music, and wildlife sounds from built-in
microphone(s). One model that I used successfully is the Zoom H2. It did
quite well when set up outside here on a humid late summer night when the tree
frogs, cicadas, crickets, and birds were making a ruckus.

The Zoom H2 can also be used for DX recording. This is still a necessary use
when conventional radios are employed. The radio could be an Ultralight, some
other portable, or a traditional desktop model. Even when an SDR is expected
to be the DX work horse, you should have a back-up plan in case the SDR or
laptop goes down. I like to have my Sony ICF-2010 or Palstar R30 with extra
batteries in my DXpedition kit just in case. That bit of redundancy planning
would also include a portable digital recorder and maybe the old cassette
recorder as well.

Unlike some units, the Zoom H2/H2N gives a choice between automatic audio
levelling (compression) and full (uncompressed) dynamic range where you adjust
the setting (on its "meter" display) for peaks thereby getting a truer
reproduction of the original source.

https://www.amazon.com/Zoom-H2N-H2n-Handy-Recorder/dp/B005CQ2ZY6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472916567&sr=8-1&keywords=h2n+zoom

Ability to record uncompressed is certainly important for musicians and those
making field recordings of nature's sounds. Maybe not quite as important for
DX.

Bruce mentioned the CC Witness. I used mine successfully in 2013 on a
quick-sneak-away-for-DX during a family trip to South Carolina.

As the following WBZ from SC recording shows, the unit does the job:
http://chowdanet.com/markc/dx_audio/wbz-1030_heard_in_sc_20131226_2315z.mp3

Receiver was the Kaito KA1103 connected via patch cord. Using a nearby PC to
record probably would have drowned the signal in RFI.

But going back to the subject of PC-based recording, there are numerous
outboard audio-to-USB solutions. Manhattan and Honestech are two brands I know
about. Some of the devices even include their own audio recording and editing
software. They're also handy for taking AV video from a camcorder, VCR, cable
box, etc. to create video files on your PC. As use of such devices by devotees
of YouTube are popular, there are quite a few out there from which to choose.

On the lower tech side there's just the simple expedient of a radio-to-PC patch
cable with a resistive divider in the middle to convert the computer's mike
input to the gain equivalent of a line level input. Not exactly rocket science.

I have reconnected several messages on this thread for continuity since not
everything went to both the IRCA and CapeDX list.

There will likely be other thoughts from the West Coast crowd. After all, that
hotbe

Sorry Michael, I lost your email address in this exchange with the IRCA list
but I would love to hear the Ethiopia cut! Hoping to log it again in Maine the
week before U.S. Thanksgiving!

Sorry to ‘clutter’ the list with personal messages.

Thanks.
