[IRCA] first look at Orleans, MA mini-DXpedition captures 9 NOV

2016-11-09 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA

>From 3:15-6 p.m. EST / 2015-2300 UTC I DX'ed at Orleans, MA and took Perseus

Most were with the car roof 2m x 2m "micro-superloop" set to null NYC (~255
deg.). I did a few with a more northerly null to reduce Boston and Portland
area pests. On one of the null-Boston captures, Argentina 1030 was absolutely
shredding WBZ.

Right out of the chute at 2015 UTC, the Brits on 909, 1089, and 1215 were
blasting. The Albanian on 1394.9 (more or less) was also very strong very
early. More interesting stuff soon joined the fray.

Saudi on 1521 is back in action. Smokin' the front end.

I had Lyca Radio UK 1458 with ID around 2300 UTC. I have barely scratched the
surface on capture review but I did note that TA's were good throughout and
Latin Americans got interesting starting around 2200 UTC.

Venezuelans on 1290, 1300, 1320, 1380, 1420, and 1500 - stations hardly ever
heard at the house - were fairly easy pickings.

FYI, Bermuda is back on 1280 with usual religion, BBN mention, and
Wadesboro-Charlotte mention in network programming. Well over the Brazil,
P.R., NY, and ME melange when checked at 2300 UTC, so go get 'em!

St. Kitts - Nevis had a good signal on 860 (over Brazil) with its "Power from
the Tower" slogan. In splash sandwich with 855 Spain and 864 Egypt.

1480 Puerto Rico was demolishing WSAR.

As the PEI crew noted, there's a surprising amount of static for November. Of
course lightning 1000 miles away over seawater can be just as bad as over 50
miles of land. Static that pestered us during the 1991 Newfie DXpedition was
coming from the mouth of the Amazon at something like 4000 miles. That, of
course, was with a Bev pointed right at it.

Much more, including audio clips, will be coming available over the next few
days.

[IRCA] Eastern Beverage back up

2016-11-09 Thread Patrick Martin
After months of trying to get rid of an old tree that came down, I decided to
just put the Beverage back up and deal with the tree root later. One thing, it
is not a good idea to let a Beverage lay dormant for a year and let it get over
run by brambles. I found a break and replaced some of the wire, and untangled
it, cut away the branches and brambles in the way, and I have it back. Took
about an hour one day (ran out of daylight), and three hours yesterday. I am
scratched up a bit, but other than that, okay. The Beverage works as good as
ever, but I have found the noise level has increased. One thing I forgot I had
were a couple RF choke boxes John Bryant suggested I build to stabilize the
antenna coax coming in. I had disconnected those a while back, and I found
running the coax through that knocked the noise level way down. I will see what
difference it makes during the day when signals are lower. But the Beverage
does work fine. 740 is a jumble mess nulling KCBS. I notice
d a strong KJRB 790, which is odd as they are supposed to null the West. I
have not heard them in years. Caught them running Oldies. But at least I do
have one my antennas back up an running.

Re: [IRCA] recent PEI loggings

2016-11-09 Thread Chuck Hutton
Mark:

I''ve never heard of a problem with the WWV transmitter frequency. Whether the
received signal is accurate enough to be a standard depends on your idea of
what is good enough. Do you only care about being with 1 Hz for MW or do you
want .1 Hz at higher SW frequencies? Propagation can sometimes cause Doppler
shift. Were you to use the lowest WWV and have Doppler, you might meet 1 Hz at
MW or maybe not. Better to use the highest WWV available, avoid sunrise /
sunset and then you'll certainly be accurate to 1 Hz at MW and probably SW.

The WWV and WWVH and other standard time frequencies are supposed to be
just that - standards. Q: Are they ALWAYS accurate enough to be used as
standards for calibration? IE, have they ever deviated any from their
standard frequencies? Just curious.

[IRCA] PEI update

2016-11-09 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
Some antenna work in our wonderful (and waning) fall sunshine got the day
off to a good start, moving the DKaz from a 60 to a 30 degree bearing. If
there are going to be Aussies, we need to give them a better chance, and
the Northeast corridor null doesn't seem to have suffered much from the
spin through the reeds and bushes.

In spite of the (so far very) minor geomagnetic burp, the mid afternoon
signals don't seem to have suffered much, Greece, Iran and Saudi Arabia
were battling for supremacy on 1512 for example. The Saudi was back on
1521 for awhile, with suffering audio, then disappeared. Now it's back
2104UT, and sometimes the strongest signal heard on the band using the
shifted DKaz.

It's not all powerhouses: 1323 Smooth Radio ID by man between laid back
pop. Good signal dominating channel. Unbelievable it's 500 watts. Peaking
at -80dBm.

And often the strongest signal on the band, at least in aggregate is the
never ending static crashes from the north Atlantic nest of all things
thunderous. Just as well the DX is hot, we'd never stick this summer-like
static out otherwise.

Back to DX.
 (check out signal strengths at:
http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/test2/display1.htm)

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-9

2016-11-09 Thread d1028gary
Asian signals improved quite a bit this morning although they still seemed to
be in a propagation hangover. The first sign of life was a strong carrier on
the unlikely frequency of 1323 around 1330, followed by weak audio on 594, 603,
657, 738, 747, 774 and 1053 around 1345. These all fizzled out by 1400, though,
and the 1323 carrier never did reach audio level. The most unusual feature was
the strange mix of big guns and second tier Asians all collectively fading in
at a ghostly level around 1345, only to collectively bail ten minutes later.
Both 1566 and 1593 had moderate carriers around 1355 but never reached audio
level. Such was the story of a pretty bizarre session, featuring the first
audio from 603, 657 and 738 in the past two weeks.

Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)

And what did you conclude from the experiments, Guy?I always find that
my experiments raise more questions than they answer, especially if they
involve phasing.

[IRCA] recent PEI loggings

2016-11-09 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
to compensate for the poor TP report this morning, here's a few loggings
from yesterday

595 MOROCCO, SNRT Al Idaâ Al-Watania NOV 9 0019. Man singing
Arabic, slightly better on Beverage, fair strength, strong carrier, seemed
//612.

675 QATAR, QMC Radio Qatar NOV 9 0226 Man chanting in parallel
with //http://www.qatarradio.qa/Live.aspx, very little delay. Fair to
good, dominating channel

756 UNITED KINGDOM, BBC Radio Cumbria. 2341 NOV 8. Pop music poor to
fair under Radio 4, // webstream
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/player/bbc_radio_cumbria

963 UNITED KINGDOM, Sunrise Radio. NOV 8 2023 . Mostly poor to fair under
Tunisia, but heard oboe based lively music // webstream found at
http://www.buzzasiaonline.com/#sthash.X3K7N0vX.dpbs with little delay.

972 UNITED KINGDOM, Sunrise Radio. NOV 8 2025 After hearing 963,
checked 972, and under Spain this was heard weakly // webstream.

1053 NORTH KOREA, jammer NOV 8 1038 The distinctive whooshing sound made
it to the Maritimes, first time in maybe 4 years since a previous
DXpedition. This started to show up weakly 1033, then faded up 1036-38.
Only Asian found, but 9kHz channels were still occupied by primarily
British signals traveling across the pond in broad daylight. Those didn't
quit until nearly 20 minutes after local sunrise in PEI.

1071 CZECHOSLOVAKIA, ČRo Plus. NOV 8 1936 Man and woman talking fair
signal, //stream http://prehravac.rozhlas.cz/plus with a very short delay

1161 UNITED KINGDOM, BBC Sussex NOV 9 0100 Heard BBC news mention
at 0103 and 0105, and was //693 but offset enough to make it difficult to
catch. Fair at times.

1161 UNITED KINGDOM, Viking 2. NOV 9 0102Pop music mostly under BBC
Sussex seemed to be from from Viking 2, per webstream //
http://radioplayer.viking2.co.uk/live/, fair at times. Had checked Tay 2
webstream just before, and it had man talking.

1386 EGYPT, ERTU Al-Quran al-Karim NOV 9 0151 Quranic chanting u/
R. Svobooda (Lithuania) //864, poor to fair

1494 MOLDOVA, Radio Moldova Actualități NOV 8 1949 Jazz fair to
good // webstream http://www.trm.md/ro/actualitati-online/, very short
delay

1548 unID. NOV 8 1109 Man talking very weakly, but given there were
British signals coming in, could it be UK? At Gold UK was running
music per webstream, so it is probably worth searching for 4QD during the
rest of the trip

1566 UNITED KINGDOM, BBC R. Somerset. 2234 NOV 8. Heard BBC mentions so
checked http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/player/bbc_radio_somerset_sound 2236-7
and music inedeed was parallel and little offset from webstream, fair to
good at times

1638 unID. NOV 8 1103 Woman talking very weakly 1104-1105, also 1107 man
talking, music 1109, and man talking again 1117UT. But always very weak
to near imaginary. One of the Aussies seems a possibility but nothing like

[IRCA] TP 10 Nov PEI version

2016-11-09 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
In a word: No

Although once again there was audio from the Brits on 1215 and 1341 after
local sunrise in PEI, there was no evidence at all of any TP activity.

Blame the geomagnetic burp I guess. Maybe tomorrow.

best wishes,

Nick
