The first time I heard 189 was a few years ago on a Tecsun PL-360 using one of
DeBock's 7.5-inch ferrite antennas. It was a surprise I never expected.
France 162 has been has been regularly heard in the winter months for the past
four decades. It'll be sad to see it go.

I've heard nothing from across the pond on medium wave tonight.

Good DX.

At 0615UT, maybe, just maybe, weak carrier on
198, weaker yet 189...others are even more
imaginary in the local noise level. 189 has
been heard in Victoria with audio, once. Never any of the others.

[IRCA] HLAZ 15 Dec Victoria version

2016-12-15 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Again, another morning of half-hearted appearances of the big guns
before about 1300UT then feathering off to nothing but weak carriers
by 1400UT HLAZ came up a bit around 1540UT, and what opening
there was (there were also a couple of other audios today), seemed to
be between 1600 and 1630UT.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

HLAZ came close.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1566 HLAZ O Holy Night carol 1611UT , then man in Korean, generally
a pretty fair strength for the next half hour, but got faint and
ragged about 1640UT, and was pretty much gone by 1700UT today

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

the above passing through

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

1422 woman talking 1610UT, then fading back up around 1617UT, sounded
more Chinese than Japanese, and pretty relaxed.
1593 man mumbling 1629UT, didn't have the usual CNR1 insistence to
his speech, then laid back vocal music across 1630UT, no pips, no
Beijing time check so not CNR1? But what could it be? Taiwan
Fisheries has been heard on 1593 at Grayland, but their website is
down along with its fine archive. Really, at 1kw, it seems an
awfully long shot anyway.

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

[IRCA] Alberta TP for 15 December 2016

2016-12-15 Thread Nigel Pimblett

It appears my antenna is connected after all, as I actually had a TP today!

1566HLAZCheju, S.KOREAFair, with woman talking in Chinese at
1501, then vocal by a woman.

Even one station is welcome after the drought of the last several days.
Only other decent carriers were on 774, 1575, and 1593. Happy to learn
my antenna doesn't need repair, as it's too cold and snowy to get
inspired about that, -27C tonight.

I agree with Russ, the future isn't bright in regard to the noise problem. I'm
curious as to what noise will be generated by the wind turbines planned for my

Re: [IRCA] Noise Floor: Where Do We Go From Here?

2016-12-15 Thread Mark Pettifor

As a tropical band DXer (a dying breed), I just want to know how I can
get CODAR identified as "harmful interference". :^)

But I agree with Russ. I don't see how anything is going to change. The
IoNT (IoNT = Internet of Noisy Things) will continue to expand, as
everyone wants to be instantly connected to everything, and all new tech
is designed from the start to be "smart" tech.

I hope I don't sound too Luddite there

Mark

[IRCA] Mostly Mexican MW DX to Enid OK, December 9-15, 2016

2016-12-15 Thread Glenn Hauser via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also
VHF/UHF, sometimes utility, ham, which may be found in several archives without
much delay, such as
http://www.hard-core-dx.com/index.php?topic=Hauser

And compiled weekly along with extensive news from many other individuals and
publications in DX LISTENING DIGEST:
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxldmid.html

All my MW DX reports starting August 2011 are archived in this forum with open
access:
http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?6543-MW-DX-from-Enid-OK-by-Glenn-Hauser/page54
[over 184,000 views as of Dec 15, 2016]

All times and dates strictly UT. Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only
or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S inside E-W or inside randomwire N-S; Nissan
stock caradio as specified; ICR-75  E-W longwire

** MEXICO. 720, Dec 10 at 0157, ``Continuamos en El Fonógrafo 700-20 AM``
non-ID, overcoming WGN, another Chicagoan attenuated by auroral conditions.
When this happens I keep hoping to hear something deeper, such as R. Católica
in Nicaragua; El Fonógrafo is only XEJCC Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, 25 kW
daytimer until 0200 per IRCA Mexican Log 2015; 1 kW per WRTH 2016, both as
``Extremo 720``. Let`s hope both catch up with current name in new editions out
shortly (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 780, Dec 10 at 0134, Spanish station is over WBBM in auroral
conditions, plug for a torneo de pesca (fishing tournament), federal PSAs,
non-ID as ``La Poderosa, 103.7 FM, 780-AM``, into music. That all fits for
XESFT, San Fernando, Tamaulipas, 5/1 kW. Also mentioned Victoria, i.e. the
state capital, Ciudad Victoria; on the NRD-545 with fixed antenna; at 0156
recheck on the rotatable DX-398, separable from WBBM (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search, December 15, UT:
 594-NW at 1335
 747-NW at 1335
774-NW at 1338 - this one is now tougher due to continuous music splash
instead of talk from 780 KSPI Stillwater OK
1098-W at 1340
1566-NW at 1341, strongest of the lot, but still no audio
Enid sunrise today: 1336 UT; will reach latest circa January 6 at 1343
(meanwhile, earliest sunset already passed a week ago at 2316 UT, creeping
later now) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

All times and dates strictly UT [5 hours ahead of `ELT` during EST; when
changing times one must also change the dates for events in the 00-05 UT period

[over 182,000 views as of Dec 8, 2016]

These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of
USA, unidentified [if any], separated by === Within each, they are in
frequency order

** NEWFOUNDLAND. 2598-USB, Dec 9 at 0021 UT, YL voice in English with marine
weather, S9 peaks, but noise level is S8. CCG schedule shows starting at 0007
UT is VCP Placentia, via St John`s transmitter site. Nothing now on 2749-USB
from NS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

===

** OKLAHOMA. 4600, Dec 15 at 1357 UT, weak but clearly audible signal matching
1390 KCRC Enid sportstalk, again making appearances. Not a plain old harmonic,
and previously logged early this year:

``4600, Jan 28 at 1352 UT, JBA talk, which on a hunch I match to local KCRC
1390, ESPN, so it`s some kind of local mix, not a harmonic``

Had I researched my archive further then, I would have found this strange
computation from 2014y:

``4600, May 18 at 0112, JBA modulation from local Enid mix // 1390 KCRC ESPN
audio. But our other strong signal, 960 KGWA has to be involved. Formula: 4 x
1390 = 5560, minus 960 = 4600``

No longer with ESPN. But there is no sign of audio on 4600 from KGWA (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

===

** U S A. KCKN had another transmitter malfunction and has been off for about a
month I'm told. No other info other than they are "working on it" Take care
(Jerry Kiefer, Orlando, Dec 9, WORLD OF RADIO 1856, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

That is 50 kW 1020 in Roswell NM, where Jerry used to work. Now that he
mentions it, has not been noticed lately, QRMing nearby KOKP 1020 Perry OK, but
might have just finally fixed their null toward KDKA. KCKN was a 100%(?) relay
of WWRV 1330 NYC, Radiovisión Cristiana, complete with local timechex and ads
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1856, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1050, UT Sun Dec 11 at 0142 UT, talk about University of Minnesota
Gopher football, hockey, Perkins ad, over XEG, certainly unusual. Confirmed
only 1050 Gopher FB affiliate is KLAH Pipestone MN:
http://sportsaffiliates.learfieldsports.com/affiliates/minnesota1
which is a diversion from its normal format of ``Blazin` Country``. It`s
licensed for 9380/432 watts U4, so obviously on day power and pattern with two
major lobes NNE/SW, rather than minor nights to NW/SE. Pipestone is in the SW
corner of MN. Above affil list linx to day and night radio-locator coverage
maps of each station (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
