Re: [IRCA] Aloha from Hawaii

2017-01-03 Thread Patrick Martin
Lots of power line noise in Hawaii. Little good grounding with Lava rock, I was
over there several times and in having dinner with engineer Alan Roycroft
complained that the local coverage of AM stations was poor. The station(s)
could be heard thousands of miles away, but could not always cover their
locals. The rental cars I had, driving out of Hilo up into the Volcano area,
after I got 25-30 miles away, even KIPA 620, KPUA-670 were not all that great.
Yet at night, San Francisco was heard, better than some locals. Ground
conductivity there is not great either, unless the towers are in the ocean.
Richard Wood DXed off local power with running his house off batteries to get
rid of noise.

My daughter lives in Kona. They have a noise problem there. Close power lines
and poor grounding. I have only heard the Hawaiians there but need a better
receiver and a wire. Will be interesting to read the reports on what is heard
there.

[IRCA] TP 3 Jan Victoria version

2017-01-03 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Even poorer and extreme minimalist today. A few carriers about 1520
UT which seemed NZ (675, 756, 909), then a very slight lift closer to
1600UT for a repeat of yesterday's NHK1 ghostly pair.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not today

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

the above passing through

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

the above passing through

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

594 JOAK woman talking 1548UT //1503 for just a few seconds
1503 JOUK woman talking 1548UT //594, then chanting male vocal,
sounding a bit like the "music lessons" on 972

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

675 756 909 1017 1557

best wishes,

Nick

We have discovered some great locations above Waipio valley - Cabin on 40 acres
that seems adequate and you can pick away at Asia or the Americas depending on
which flag you use.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 1/3/17

2017-01-03 Thread Richard N Allen
There is little DX to report here this morning. The only TP signal heard was a
carrier on 702 kHz from WSW direction at 1313 GMT, with moderate QRM from
XEETCH and XEGD.

Usual signals from KWMT-540 and WNAX-570 were missing. There's a forecast for
a G-1 geomagnetic storm on January 4 and 5.

Good DX all.

Richard Allen,
near Perry OK USA,
Skywave with Space Magnet SM-2.
