Re: [IRCA] 1053 Korea (all) off the air

2017-03-24 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Thanks Chris; I suspected that might be the case, as the beehive
jammer had been so regular here before 1400UT.

But...has anyone left a carrier on? I'm not hearing much audio here
(and usually it sounds like Japan if I do), but unless JOAR is really
undermodulated, someone still is putting out a good carrier.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] TP 24 Mar Victoria version

2017-03-24 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A continuing decline in conditions but not outrageously, just a
little harder to dig out the second tier stations. Things peaked
around 1345-50UT today.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

594 JOAK peak at 1351UT with man in Japanese
747 JOIB man in Japanese 1320UT
774 JOUB Chinese lessons 1349UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

828 JOBB Chinese lessons 1345UT, music box still making it through at
s/off 1442UT

972 HLCA man talking in Korean 1338UT
1566 HLAZ man and woman in Chinese 1350UT (choral music still making
it through weakly at 1514UT)

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

567 JOIK Japanese woman, musical interlude //594 1323UT
873 JOGB man in Japanese //747 1328UT
891 JOHK man in Japanese //594 1325UT
1242 JOLF man talking slowly in Japanese 1321UT
1287 JOHR woman and man in Japanese 1336UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

612 man and woman talking, DU English inflection 1352UT
621 woman talking, DU English inflection 1352UT
729 JOCK brief break in 730 splash allowed this through, woman
talking //594 1320UT

738 pop music 1347UT; Taiwan?
837 JOQK very wispy with woman and man talking //594 1357UT
954 man talking Japanese inflection 1305UT; also man and woman talking 1502-3UT
1089 JOHB woman talking, lively music, more woman talking //774 1340UT
1134 female pop music in 1130 splash 1346UT, JOQR?
1143 woman talking Chinese inflection, but also another woman talking
on another station? 1308UT

1386 NHK2 CC lessons  //774 1351UT;
1422 male ballad 1347UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

[IRCA] WFLI Chattanooga To Go Dark

2017-03-24 Thread Marc DeLorenzo via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---

Sorry to see them go. WFLI-1070 was one of the first stations I heard testing
during the wee hours. With CBA-1070 in their nightly silent period, WFLI was
loud and clear and alone on the channel. They were also one of the first
stations I heard with an announcer who had a serious Southern accent. I was 16
at the time (1966) and really got a kick out of that Southern drawl. He IDed
as "WFLI, Lookout Mountain, Tennessee" and he stretched that out to about 10
seconds!

WFLI “Jet Fly” was the dominant Top 40 stations in our market when I was
growing up in Eastern Tennessee. Spent many a great summer day and night
listening to jocks like Tommy Jett. Later as a young man just out of the Navy,
I had a chance to work for Mr. Benz as an engineer helping to build WFLI-TV53.
I remember getting the chance to spend a few days helping to verify the AM
station’s complicated antenna pattern with Mr. Benz—we took FS measurements and
did a lot of calculations. Even using my TI calculator, I couldn’t keep up with
Mr. Benz, who did the calculations in his head! It was a real education. WFLI
was widely heard, especially during infrequent DX tests. They’ve been a
low-rent religious outlet for years, but it will be sad for them to be gone
from the dial. On the downbeat, beat, beat…..Farewell, old friend. 73,Les

Re: [IRCA] Synchronous AM Boosters Could Help Revive Senior Band

2017-03-24 Thread Russ Edmunds
It should probably be noted in this discussion that synchronous AM
transmitters have been in use in Europe for decades on the AM band. There
were and are various mixes of low power and low and high power AM's
operating on the same channel with the same programming. Back in the 1970's
there were a greater number of groupings of low power ( 250-1000 watt )
stations in the UK and Spain in particular utilizing this method, and in
many cases those signals would be audible under good TA conditions here in
ECNA.

Usually, these sounded very much like a single transmitter here. Whether
this was because we heard only one station ( the most powerful the highest
antenna or the most favorable tx location could be debated ) or whether the
synchronization was that good is impossible to know some 40 years on.

Based on this, plus the ( unmentioned in the article ) synchronous WBZ/WBZA
experiement with newer technology which remained into the 1960's, as well
as the KOB/KKOB setup in NM, plus a few others, there shouldn't be any
reason why this wouldn't be a viable option technically.

That said however, the low cost of erecting and maintaining an FM
translator is probably a momre cost-effective solution.

Once again the Japanese big guns on 594, 693, 747 and 774 pounded in

yesterday the second-tier Koreans on 603 and 657 were relatively
subdued, though, but 738-BEL2 managed its best signal here since the
fall season (all on a 5" FSL antenna). Haven't seen any other TP
reports, so maybe it was another WA/ BC propagation exclusive?

594-JOAK and 693-JOAB were the main stars of the session, with both
very vibrant at my 1320 start time (along with 1566-HLAZ's Japanese
service). 972-HLCA was in and out of "Freedom 970," but generally
pretty potent as well. Sunrise enhancement around 1340 boosted up
738-BEL2 to a fair level in and out, but didn't seem to do much for
the other second-tier regulars on 603 or 657, or the high band TP's
on 1575 and 1593. 1134-JOQR rode the Japanese-slanted propagation to
a brief good level during sunrise enhancement, but the main
attraction here during that period was 738-BEL2's Chinese pop music
program, with the usual female announcer quite legible after the
740-Frisco splatter bit the dust around 1340. It was quite a thrill
to track this down on an antenna not much larger than an Ultralight radio.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 3-24

2017-03-24 Thread d1028gary
Once again the Japanese big guns on 594, 693, 747 and 774 pounded in with
serious force during sunrise enhancement, while the Koreans on 972 and 1566 had
their usual potent moments as well. Unlike yesterday the second-tier Koreans on
603 and 657 were relatively subdued, though, but 738-BEL2 managed its best
signal here since the fall season (all on a 5" FSL antenna). Haven't seen any
other TP reports, so maybe it was another WA/ BC propagation exclusive?

594-JOAK and 693-JOAB were the main stars of the session, with both very
vibrant at my 1320 start time (along with 1566-HLAZ's Japanese service).
972-HLCA was in and out of "Freedom 970," but generally pretty potent as well.
Sunrise enhancement around 1340 boosted up 738-BEL2 to a fair level in and out,
but didn't seem to do much for the other second-tier regulars on 603 or 657, or
the high band TP's on 1575 and 1593. 1134-JOQR rode the Japanese-slanted
propagation to a brief good level during sunrise enhancement, but the main
attraction here during that period was 738-BEL2's Chinese pop music program,
with the usual female announcer quite legible after the 740-Frisco splatter bit
the dust around 1340. It was quite a thrill to track this down on an antenna
not much larger than an Ultralight radio.

594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Very good level Japanese female speech at 1322; along
with 693-JOAB's Chinese lesson, the strongest signal of the session
https://app.box.com/s/rtihg7mhad9jmc3tt2rxeoqwwkpfc0jm

738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan The usual Chinese female announcer at a fair level
after pop music at 1353; best signal here so far in 2017
https://app.box.com/s/ruir96bjob9jel20wy5ctipg4h5lztxk

972 HLCA Dangjin, S. Korea Potent signal with male vocal music at 1343 , but
can't seem to break free of "Freedom 970"

Duh! I need new glasses... right now there's a shortage of
glass-bottomed Coke bottles for re-purposing!

Yeah, 4QN would make more sense.

The woman that rises on top by :18 is the Aussie accent I referred to, but I
supposed it was Townsville not NewsRadio.

Sorry for a delayed response... but I hear two EE speakers there. The
first is a male with repeated use of "getting to..." (four times
beginning at :10, then a woman rises to dominate at ~:18 with words that
include "former (something)... making his debut..."

And I'll agree with Chuck that the pronunciation of 'debut' suggests DU.

Hang on... the National Rugby League line-up for Sat 18 Mar had a game
involving the Sydney Roosters which would've kicked off at 0900 UT.
That 'something word' sounds suspiciously like "Rooster".

So possibly ABC NewsRadio for the woman?

Chuck and Colin,

Thanks for listening to the 630 kHz DXpedition clip, and for your detailed
assessments. I will pass these on to Hiroo.

I think that for their next major DXpedition this Japanese group will have a
major advantage for MP3 file review-- with a Canadian named Nick Hall-Patch as
one of the participants.

Yea - I swear I could hear an entirely Asian language in there with no
evidence of anything remotely English.

Any assistance in listening and digging out any clues for station identity
would be greatly appreciated! The Cape Taitosaki DXpedition was extremely
successful for the Japanese Ultralight DXers, with several of them
receiving astonishing DX like 1620-Radio Rebelde (Cuba) on 7.5" loopstick
Tecsun PL-380 and CC Skywave models around local sunset.

2017-03-24 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

A really interesting article; I enjoyed the description of how the
old WBZ and WBZA were locked together over a phone line. Plus, it
features a Scott Fybush photo. Can't ask for more than that.

best wishes,

I remain amazed at how well 3GI gets out for 10 kW and while near the coast
isn't directly on the coast. Anyone know where in relation to Sale and the
coast their xmtr is? I tried googling but wasn't quite sure.

These guys made it to IL during a couple of the stunning mornings for DU's
from mid Sept to early Oct last year. 73 KAZ

Re: [IRCA] WFLI Chattanooga To Go Dark

2017-03-24 Thread Les Rayburn
WFLI “Jet Fly” was the dominant Top 40 stations in our market when I was
growing up in Eastern Tennessee. Spent many a great summer day and night
listening to jocks like Tommy Jett.

Later as a young man just out of the Navy, I had a chance to work for Mr. Benz
as an engineer helping to build WFLI-TV53. I remember getting the chance to
spend a few days helping to verify the AM station’s complicated antenna pattern
with Mr. Benz—we took FS measurements and did a lot of calculations. Even using
my TI calculator, I couldn’t keep up with Mr. Benz, who did the calculations in
his head! It was a real education.

WFLI was widely heard, especially during infrequent DX tests. They’ve been a
low-rent religious outlet for years, but it will be sad for them to be gone
from the dial.

On the downbeat, beat, beat…..

Farewell, old friend.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 3/24/17

2017-03-24 Thread Richard N Allen
There is little DX to report from the where "the wind comes sweeping down the
plain".
702 2BL? carrier signal, strong at times, heard from 1133 until past 1227 local
sunrise.
1098 V7AB? weak carrier signal at 1038.
1548 4QD? carrier signal noted at 1210, and again at 1225, fading away at 1228.
No signals detected on 612, 774, 1116, 1611 and 1701 when checked.

The high wind gusts here in the past 24 hours forced me to remove my ALA1530LNP
aerial from it mast and bring it inside.

Good DX.
