Not quite as bad as yesterday. That's about as far as I'll go in
praise of this morning's session. Weak talk form 1116 4BC at 1326
means it wasn't a total shutout. Quite a number of carriers from the
more common DUs, but no trace of anything Asian.

Saul,

I hear a "W Radio" ID in Spanish in your "A" clip, about six seconds in.
Your "D" clip is WKDA, calls are given right after the "Radio Luz" ID. I
wonder if they are the source of the horns in the other clips?

[IRCA] early TA hets on car radio

2017-11-09 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
At 3 p.m. EST (2000 UTC) as I was pulling out of the Market Basket store in
Bourne, MA, I popped up 730 WJTO, a station I regularly tune for Bob Bittner's
unique twist on oldies / nostalgia. Besides some back chatter from WACE's fire
'n' brimstone preacher (via early skip), there was a 1 kHz het, most likely
from 729 Spain (though South Africa would be more interesting).

Other spots on the dial had hets too, of course the 1521 Saudi biggie against
1520 WIZZ/WWKB and 1503 (Iran maybe) against 1500 WFED/WFIF.

Sunset is about 4:25 p.m. EST / 2125 UTC.

I am running 4, 5, and 6 p.m. Perseus captures to see if anything worthwhile
bubbles up.

Wondering if things will swing auroral since talk on the local TV weather
showed Northern Lights pictures from last night, I think from Mt. Washington,
NH.

Re: [IRCA] 1540AM ZNS-1 Bahamas Anyone catch this one?

2017-11-09 Thread Stewart, Joseph R

Getting to the table late with this reply (as usual)...
The one and only logging I've ever managed on ZNS-1 was several years back when
they had a DA malfunction and were running non-directional. Even then it was
weak here in southern Missouri, buried under all the other crap on 1540; their
webstream came in handy that evening to verify what I thought I was hearing.

[IRCA] propagation

2017-11-09 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Material below my text relates to 160m / 1.8 MHz but possibly relevant to MW BC
as well: East Coast sunset - Australia sunrise long-path / grey-line
propagation.

Recent China 1521 receptions in Canada and the upper Midwest / Lakes area US
aren't exactly the same phenomenon but those still show that some unusual
openings have been occurring.

Last night the thought was that conditions were going to be highly auroral, but
TA's - admittedly dominated by Spain, Canaries, Algeria, Egypt - were in at
fairly good levels. I thought I might get lucky again with South Africa on 576
but just RNE Canaries / Spain. 1521 around -0100 UTC had Spain, not China.

Because of recent wind damage to the south antenna transformer connections, I
was on the east antenna that somewhat subdues Latin America, e.g. 750 Newfie -
YVKS shoot-out east antenna versus typical ton-of-bricks YVKS south antenna.

Last night Brazil was noted topping 610 and a bit on 760 jumbled with Colombia.
But in general not that much exciting or unusual from the south. Probably
more auroral tonight.

I should have the south antenna operational over the weekend. I think it's
going to be subfreezing out back even during the day tomorrow.

Another sign of things looking up on Topband: I worked VK6VZ on long path
at 2128Z today, right at my sunset. Steve peaked 569 from the ENE and he
also worked at least a couple other W1's. I also had partial copy on VK6LW
CQing around the same time but Kevin was right at the noise and not quite
strong enough to make an attempt at a QSO.

G?day

It has been a pretty poor season here so far, with conditions after VK6 sunset
into North America at/before sunrise well down on last year. However, this
morning the band opened well into eastern North America.

Jeff VY2ZM was 569 at 2100Z (14 minutes before sunrise here) peaking a couple
of minutes after my sunrise at 599, during our QSO.

After a internet message from John W1FV (MA) to try for a QSO, we worked easily
? after a number of years of trying ? at 2127Z with reports of 559 both ways.
At the end of the QSO John peaked 589 and I was then QSOed by Roger N1RJ (ME)
56-79 and Dick W1ZC (NH) 579.

Long path QSOs with the USA on 160m only occur rarely from here ? I?ve had
about 15 in 22 years ? but really get the adrenaline going when they occur.
This was a really good opening ? and the A Index was 32 and the K index 6.

What a strange band is the topband!

Thanks to a mostly-water route, reception is fairly common.

The foreign language station on 1540 is CHIN Toronto, also often heard in MA.

Per Wikipedia "ZNS-1 is the oldest broadcast station in the Bahamas. It has a
News/Talk format, and broadcasts on AM frequency 1540 kHz and FM frequency
104.5 MHz."

<<
I'm in Charleston SC. They are the dominant station on 1540 here.

Years ago when I lived in KC, I heard them a couple of times on my TRF
during KXEL Sunday morning SP. I think they ran classical mx overnight
back then (late 60s).
