Re: [IRCA] West Coast TPs Sept 19
Hard for me to say honestly. I could rarely, if ever, hear 1323 CRI Russian from Seoul because 1323 CRI Korean was one of the strongest locals on the dial. It was as strong or stronger than my local 603 just 19 miles away, stronger than my local 1500kw 1080 Haeju, and 972. I could sometimes hear the Russian service far in back on a few nights when the Korean signal had a few moments of silence between programs or whatever. I know that the only DXers who hear the Korean service, which is a moderate 600kw (the Russian service is quite weak - it's only 200kw and further north) are the ones in the south due to the signal being directional to the south, while everyone else hears the Russian signal. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has noticed any changes. -Chris Kadlec Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2018 19:07:12 -0700 From: Volodya S To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America Subject: Re: [IRCA] West Coast TPs Sept 19 Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Chris (and Colin), I?ve always only heard CRI Russian on 1323 //963 during our mornings here. A rather frustrating morning here. Some less than usual signals peaked up, such as 657, but mostly things were splashy with lots of carriers, many with audio traces, and erratic fading. I don't think you're crazy here. Here's what I think might have been happening: if you're in a crowded downtown of a big city like Seoul, at ground level you're probably in a somewhat effective Faraday cage. A 300-meter-wavelength signal is going to have a hard time penetrating a downtown street grid where the buildings are only 20 or 30 meters apart from each other and hundreds of meters tall. Get on top of those buildings and you're out of the Faraday cage. The signals are still being conducted along ground (and perhaps up the steel of the buildings to your radio) rather than through skywave - but up on the roof you're not within the giant steel city grid that attenuates the long wavelengths of MW radio. And we've known for 90+ years that steel building frames can have effects on MW signals - go all the way back to 1922, when AT started its station WBAY at one of its buildings in Lower Manhattan, only to discover the building frame itself was resonant at WBAY's 360 meter wavelength, causing it to absorb much of the transmitted signal. They had another station, WEAF, at a different location that worked better and they moved their programming over there. (We had a similar situation in 1922 here in Rochester - the Times-Union newspaper put WHQ radio on the air in March and found its building absorbed too much of the signal from the rooftop antenna, so they shut it down and sold the license to George Eastman of Kodak fame, who restarted it later that same year as WHAM.) s ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

That is the norm here also Walt. This morning, 963 was quite good at times with a woman in Russian, and that was parallel occasionally with a much weaker 1323 (details a bit late).I think that CRI Korean on 1323 beams to Korea, and away from us on the west coast, whereas CRI Russian beams roughly towards us. 73, Nick At 02:07 2018-09-20, Volodya S wrote: Chris (and Colin), I've always only heard CRI Russian on 1323 //963 during our mornings here. If your grass is long ..ie not a place where you'd mow under the antenna, I'd go 3 ft so tall wet grass won't be touching the antenna. When mine was only up a ft, snow was an issue and I experienced some loss of F/B. 73 KAZ On Wed, Sep 19, 2018 at 3:48 PM, Jim B wrote: > thanks for the info KAZ. thanks for the info KAZ. I will go with two feet and hopefully not trip over it too may times. Jim I use 2 ft. Others use 3 ft and also get great results. I tried 1 ft, and F/B nulls degraded somewhat and even fine tuning the resistance (Rt) results showed a least a couple dB less null. 73 KAZ On Wed, Sep 19, 2018 at 10:31 AM, Jim B wrote: > I am about to start construction of a 140' long and 22' high dkaz. Re: [IRCA] West Coast TPs Sept 19
Colin, Nice to see a video with the audio of what it really sounds like on this side of the ocean. Not many post a lot of the audio. 972 Dangjin is 750kw day, 1500 night. I lived about 40 miles from the tower (25 mi. to my FM site), so the power change btw. night and day didn’t make much difference to me. They came on with their 1-hour sign-on sequence at noon and turned off the following morning. Henan often interfered with it at night and I’d often hear 972 Pyongyang from atop the skyscrapers downtown (like with many stations, I could only hear them atop the towers *shrugs* - even though people say things like height make no difference with AM, something must explain that; perhaps steel conducts signals). 603 is indeed Hwaseong playing Do Hyeon-yun’s “Saranghaessnabwa” (I Guess I Loved You). 250kw day, 500 night. 657 - I haven’t heard that song in a while. Naturally Pyongyang. 1098… I also cannot tell from the audio which station it is. 1017 is CRI Korean, as you figured //1323. -Chris Kadlec Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2018 11:10:26 -0700 From: "R.
