Interesting, Nick. Arabic on 702 might be BBC in Oman, the big gun that was the
surprise of the Hawaii Ultralight DXpedition.

Most TP-DXers are pretty mystified with Arabic. I never would have known what
this strange 702 signal was, except for the language skills of Mauno and Mika

873    JOGB    Kumamoto, JAPAN     Man during language lesson at 1348, //774

Re: [IRCA] further TA in Victoria 1 December

2018-12-06 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I've checked 702 and 1422 several times this week
on Kiwi SDRs for any possible French talk before
0500UT, and it's almost always been Koranic
recitation. However, this evening, it was a man
and woman talking, but in Arabic.

However, the Arabic seemed to have a softer sound
than Middle Eastern, or even Egyptian, Arabic,
and could possibly be mistaken for French when it's poor quality DX.

best wishes,

Nick

Thanks for the suggestions Chuck.

On 702, the French program starts at 0500UT
apparently, so not a guideline necessarily for
earlier on.  This evening, I checked a
Portuguese and a Sardinian KiwiSDR , and both
delivered Coran Radio IDs on the hour on 702,
after much recitation, also //1422.

Maybe Algeria  has different programming on
weeknights, so will check again tomorrow.

1026 Tabriz has been heard here in the last
month, and was also hearing Iran on 1278 about
30 minutes later, hence the conjecture.

A further scan through last night's TA files yielded the following

DEC 1

702Â unID, man talking, sounded French 0240UT, into music from
plucked stringed  instrument, then more talking.  Algeria is listed
as R. Coran at this time, which I suspect would not be French, but
can't think who else this might be?

783 unID man talking, some sort of Arabic singing, poor at 0111UT,
just a brief fade up.

819 Arabic vocal music, poor,  0231UT Egypt?

864 EGYPTÂ maxed out 0227-8UT strong and clear Koran recitation.

909 woman  in recognizably British English 0203UT and also 0230UT;
fair strength, likely Five Live

1026 unID turned up at various times between 0130-0220UT, best was at
0153UT, with echoey male vocals.  Iran?

1098 Arabic sounding vocal, poor 0226UT

1539 UAE?  Although formally logged at 0239UT, was also noted with
man talking and Indian sounding music 0203, 0214,and 0234UT, never
more than poor strength

1575  tUAE.  Fades in the buzz saw yielded male Middle Eastern
sounding vocals, poor, 0159UT and across the hour, but I think Farda
runs on Iranian time anyway.   Male talk at 0130UT however was too
poor to get any ID'able material

Not much audio this evening, but definite Romanian anthem heard on
855 0256UT, fair strength at times

Also seemed to be Romania on 1458, though at poor strength, with man
saying "Radio Romania" I think, followed by 6 short pips
0059-0100UT. The same sequence was heard on Radio Romania
Actualitati webstream one hour later.

[IRCA] TP 6 Dec Victoria version.

2018-12-06 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A better morning than yesterday (not a high bar, admittedly). I think that
the big gun signals at least may have been stronger in the hours before
sunrise, but by 1445UT, the levels reported below were about the best it was
going to be.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

not quite

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

594 JOAK 1517UT

774 JOUB 1517UT

972 HLSA 1542UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

603 soft vocal music 1538UT, likely HLSA? but no parallel

747 JOIB music box 1541UT

828 JOBB music box 1542UT

945 CNR1 two men in Chinese 1555UT //1593

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

1098 CNR1 man //945 1556UT

1287 man talking, Japanese intonation 1606UT

1566 woman talking Chinese intonation 1556UT

1575 woman talking, SE Asian language? 1542UT

1593 CNR-1 man //6175 1549UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

639 702  819 891 1008 1323 seemed to be Asian;
nothing much seemed to be DU

Weak carriers in Seattle on most of the freqs Nick mentioned, plus 864

[IRCA] 549 Ukraine

2018-12-06 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Roy, thanks for posting the 549 Ukraine clip.  That made me look at some
recent captures and it turns out that this station has arrived here too..
This is a recording from yesterday (5 DEC) at 2100 UTC / 4 p.m. EST.  For some
reason Algeria, the usual dominant, was
subdued.https://app.box.com/s/wcx6rbky2g610gys6joyzbc5mgm9omef
Low band eastern Europe around sunset seems to be a "thing" here lately with
all of the following making showings in the 2030-2200 UTC stretch:540
Hungary549 Ukraine576 Bulgaria603 and 756 Romania639 Czech
These stations are over the Spain, Algeria, etc. usuals for a while, then they
tend to drift into background roles once full darkness is reached.
There is also activity other than typical Spain on 558.  Non-Spanish speech
pops through for a second or two here and there during splash lulls.
Unfortunately, on my normal antenna, 560 WGAN horse-whips 558 with huge slop.
Iran is suspected as the non-Spain 558.
