I can’t browse FB (which I confess I do for around 2 minutes a day...) without
hearing the voice of Samuel L. Jackson in my head - describing the experience

Mass media, social media, FOX news, and the like have turned us all into docile

I'm testing a PHP/MySQL Chat system over at https://dxer.ca/blab/

The downside of Facebook is that you have to be a member of Facebook
and that means giving up almost every last gribble of personal information
you have --
and it isn't truly live nor is it a chat channel...

The system I have installed can any number of channels on it all dedicated
to any aspect of the
hobby and any geographical location.

If it catches on, great - if it doesn't, no big - it only took 15 minutes
to set it up.

or there is a great TA opening to the West Coast...

Show of hands: Who would use a system like this?

Ian, Mary, my wife Andrea, and I have been close friends for around 20
years now - and we share Ian's loss. Please keep Ian in your thoughts - his

He could use our thoughts, prayers and shared grief right now.

Well done!

Re: [IRCA] phased BoG experiment in Masset.

2019-01-08 Thread R. Colin Newell
Easy answer —

Your sample Lankford-Misek-Ratzlaff phaser
Does not have actual matched 50 ohm potentiometers in the “fine” controls —
They are “faked” 50’s using fixed resistors across the POT - which results in
squirrelly, unpredictable or unstable nulls.

All M-L-R PHASERS “sold” since that beta was built have ceramic or wire wound
pots built and deployed like Lankford made his.

Dallas Lankford described his 2007 Phaser as the best one ever - which is why
Nick, Steve and I improved on it - making it significantly superior to the
clunky Quantum Phaser and massively less expensive than the Cadillac-Tank
DX-engineering Phaser.

And with this e-mail, I’ll expect pedantic pencil pointing, finger waving and
demands to see schematics and exact details on all changes.

I’m currently building 6 more simultaneously.

I’m specifically not selling them to “gotta have one / gotta shelve one...”
they are for active DXERS actually posting regularly on IRCA or one of the
other clubs.

I’ll take questions now.

As countries in Africa are being inundated with the latest Chinese made cell

despots everywhere are realizing the wonders of one mouse click filtration and
censorship.

Radio is hard to jam and filter.

Internet radio censorship is crazy easy - even a dictator can do it.

In British Columbia, there is (based on my intel) virtually no techs or
engineers to look after the aging CBC AM-FM infrastructure.

If it breaks, someone from commercial radio is paged or emailed - fingers
crossed.

A family member is an on-air personality and content creator and he has
actually climbed a tower to check connections on an antenna array with no
technical training - yes, he’s an idiot (and an in-law...)

In our dumb-down race for the bottom Donald Trump world, we forget that we
actually need intelligent and educated folks occasionally.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 12-18 (Preliminary)

2018-12-18 Thread R. Colin Newell
I think it has everything to do with --

*a.) The "cut of the jib" of the antenna*
*b.) The bearing*
*c.) The ambient noise level*
*d.) The conductivity of the ground*
*e.) The relative position to a coastal enhancement or body of water.*

I have a lake 2.5 km to my N.W. - I bet dollars for doughnuts that
if I did a "Gary DeBock" and set up camp there one morning (it's on an easy
bike bath...)
Signals "by the lake" would be 3 - 7 db better than my location. I'm
convinced of it.

Ok. Yes. Challenge accepted!

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 12-18 (Preliminary)

2018-12-18 Thread R. Colin Newell
Todays showcase of all things Trans-Pacific radio signals felt that they
took a 3 db drop over yesterday - that said, I was at the dial a whopping
20 minutes later than yesterday and that
could have accounted for the fade interval.

That said, there were good signals on primaries and secondaries from 567
khz up through my mid-band check.
As I passed 972 Khz, I noticed that Korea was swamping the domestics on 970
Khz -- and that is always a good sign.
My mid-band from 909 through 1215 Khz seemed to be holding up the best as
the local sunrise approached.

For whatever reason, I get the best bang for the buck mid-band - which is
to say, whatever Nick Hall-Patches reference antennas and receivers
are getting, mid-band seems a bit perkier for me at my location.

[IRCA] TP 10 Dec Victoria version.

2018-12-10 Thread R. Colin Newell
At 15:00 UTC the band looked pretty lively -

By the time I got out of the shower at 15:15, its wing tanks were vapour
and it was lining up a dead stick landing in an open field.

That said, 1566, 1575 and 1593 were in healthy audio -- a great example of
what the ionosphere can giveth can rightfully take away in a gesture.

If anyone was listening before 15:00 UTC - look at your SDR recordings -
there might have been some something-something...

Seasons greetings!

[IRCA] Nov 28 WC TP's morning stars...

2018-11-28 Thread R. Colin Newell
Apart from China on 1593 at rip-snorting levels on the TOA at 1600 UTC,
it looked to be an average to slightly above average morning with
a frisky SR lift around 1530 UTC -- especially favouring the upper band
and (the now unique and it is own category "Jammer of Note") bringing
the Iranian buzzer into clear reception at 1540 UTC riding up and over
Thailand and another station that I can only assume to be Farda.

That was my brief listening session -

Re: [IRCA] [HCDX] CBU 690 Vancouver now at 25,000 Watts fulltime

2018-11-23 Thread R. Colin Newell
Another treat from a CBC Staffer that shared with me under conditions of
strictest confidence--

*CBC has few few hardware techs deployed and very little "break and fix"
policy -*
*That means when anything (and I stress ANYTHING) fails, declines or breaks
- it is left to languish until*
*such time as it "fixes itself" or completely fails and if in an urban area
might get the attention of the 1 or 2 techs*
*that are available.*

Our own 90.5 FM in Victoria is a great example of a transmitter that shares
a tower with
some TOP 40 FM stations in Victoria -- and their "technician" who has
actually climbed tower
has ZERO tech training and uses a "common sense" approach to
troubleshooting and fixing...
We had a convo some years back when he insisted that FM and VHF was purely
line of sight,
no skip, no bounce or scatter -- he was convinced that there is no such
thing as FM DX
as the one line in his "40 page" technician learning manual that he got out
of a cereal box
said... "AM Distance, FM line of sight..."

and that is the tech that might deal with one of the FM transmitters
locally.

A wonderful byproduct of "race for the bottom" bean counting when it comes
to supporting infrastructure...

Why would we get a skilled tech on staff *35 years a week* when we
can get a dummy to do the same work for minimum wage AND
be an on-air person too.

Sorry Paul: Not implying *On-air types are dummies* -- but that they
shouldn't be touching
transmitters and antennas.
