Re: [IRCA] Shortwave band interference

Yes, Common Mode chokes work wonders. You might be able to knock some of
it back with ferrite snap ons for the power supply and the Cable TV coax.

For the cokes, checkout http://myantennas.com/wp/product-category/cmc-2/

Hi all,

Here in the shack my AM band is very clear of any interference and I have no
issues picking out weak stations, but the shortwave bands are covered in a
kind of hash interference and only strong signals are being heard.

Over the weekend, I turned off all the circuit breakers in the house and one
by one turned them on until I found the device(s) causing the interference..
It turns out the spectrum cable modem is the issue along with the two boxes
on top of the TV's for the cable connection. These devices are powered by
the external power pack.

I am wondering if anyone has had any experience in tackling such noise or
will the MFJ-1026 unit be affective enough to reduce or remove the noise I
am experiencing.

Unfortunately, turning on the cable modem is out of the question as it's the
Internet/TV and Phone services to the house, plus my wife uses the internet
as well.

Any suggestions are welcomed..

Re: [IRCA] Common-Mode Choke Designed for MW DXing

2016-06-07 Thread Robert LaFore
Chuck: These are in line. Nothing special. One antenna is a random wire
of about 300 ft, in fairly close proximity to a 'space loop' stung up
in several trees. The chokes are in the shack, fed from the antennas and
then using short jumpers as needed to get to the SDR-IQ and the Grundig.

Since the antennas are fairly close to each other there is a fair amount
of interaction between the two. I had stopped using the SDR because of
the broad noise it would throw off. That is gone now, along with a large
amount of noise from my own house and a neighbor's house.

A good example, is WMAC-940 in Macon, roughly 100 miles south. It was
just barely audible because of noise, despite a S7-S8 signal. With the
chokes, its an easy signal to hear now.

At present I do not have the ability to sink a good ground here. But
that is one project that will take place during the "off season"
(summer). That may offer further improvements.

The choke will allow DC power to pass through to active antennas, and can be
inserted anywhere in the feed line, including inside the shack. For best

If you have EMI/RFI problems or just want to reduce the noise floor to your

The 1500 noise is stronger here, in Acworth GA tonight. I went out and
repeated the 320 (magnetic N reference).

On the SDR, the noises are on either side of 1500, leading me to believe
that this is not a spur from 1490 or 1510. This is someone on 1500.

In my 37 years as a broadcast engineer, I have encountered a few older
transmitters that would "radiate" even when the high voltage was off.
Normally this only goes a few miles, if it radiates at all. This
typically goes away when the high voltage is "on". (So, the issue may
not be apparent during the normal operation of the station.)

I do not think this has anything to do with WFED.

I suspect that it is someone with an older transmitter on 1500, they may
be signing off, but the TX may continue to radiate some sort of trash.
Given a relatively 'vacant' channel (relatively speaking---if there is
such a thing anymore) a few dozen watts can travel a surprising distance
at night

I have heard WPOT here "after hours", so could be them, or someone in W.
Kentucky, maybe S. Illinois. Although WPOT seems a bit to far west from
what I am seeing here.

Re: [IRCA] 1500 KHz "Mystery Station"

2016-02-08 Thread Robert LaFore
Hi there. I am in Acworth GA, just north of Atlanta. I have heard this
noise for months and assumed it was local to me. As for WDPC, they are
pretty good about going to CH and signing off. I do not believe it is them.
That being said; the noise sounds like some lower stages of a transmitter
that may be radiating. In other words the transmitter's High voltage is
OFF, but some of the lower stages (oscillator, driver etc) are still
powered up, and there is enough leakage for it to get to the antenna.

I will try to DF this from here tonight and see If I can get a bearing. It
starts making its appearance around 5:30pm here.

I may have to try 680 herebut that one is loaded up at night with
some residual WCNN in their deep null, WPTF and WCIT among others.
640 has WGST Atlanta, about 25 miles south, along with a CUban and a
bunch of others.

1070 was a surprise, as you can see on the map, North GA is blanketed by
several 1070's.

Back in the 70's I heard KFI in Michigan, after WHLO went off. WHLO used
to be a "limited time" station, and was able to operate into the
evening. I think they went off at LA's Sunset timeusually leaving
Cuba alone on the channel.
