[IRCA] for sale: drake r8a

2018-08-01 Thread billy brooks
Currently the drake r8a is my main dx unit.I've owned it since 2006.
It was originally sold by the factory in 1997 to the 1st owner. I still
have the drake sales invoice.

Cosmetically the receiver is in near-perfect condition. No blemishes, dings
or scratches, all stenciled and painted surfaces are factory crisp. The
unit is in excellent working order as well.

Finally it has the factory-installed vhf converter. This receiver requires
no external power supply and is ready to run out of the box. Pictures can
be emailed.

To discuss further : wwbro...@windstream.net or (724-627-5994). My
preference is the phone contact. I am asking $700.00 +
shipping & ins.

Re: [IRCA] Informal "poll"

2018-02-08 Thread billy brooks
I started dx'ing when I was 11yrs.old in 1963 using an old hallicrafters
s-38e. began with sw and recall getting my first qsl from HCJB "voice of the
andes". Did not find
Sw very interesting due to being overshadowed by my big bro. and his buddy
who still lives down the street and still dx's! they dx'd in the late '50's
when MW was quiet with
Relatively few stations. i logged about a 100 stations, notably kfi, and
ksl. Also a couple of 1kw stations in the west. By 1966 I discovered girls
and the radio, now a knight r-100a went silent. Sold it for a 1968 sony
8-track recorder. I did not return to the hobby until I built my house in
2006. Bought a drake r8a and started dx'ing once more. My Logs are ho-hum
mainly due to my lazy attitude. Still love the hobby especially in the
summer, dreaming of the upcoming dx season. But something always gets
in the way! I have 1st class equip. but there is no substitute for time at
the dials!! My current shack is surrounded by glass and I can see WANB-1210
out my window.

Russ,

For me, I started out DXing SW when I was a teen living in Australia on June
29 1975, my first logging was Radio Nederland broadcasting to the Pacific
region with the "Happy Station", then followed by Radio Canada
International.
Later in 1975, I was sharing pretty much equal time between SW and Broadcast
Dxing.
Now a days, it's pretty much Broadcast DXing, more of a challenge

Mostly this is aimed at folks here who've been DX'ing for many years.

How many here either started out DX'ing SW or have done so along with BCB
over the years ?

I started with BCB as a child, and dabbled in SW in my late teens and early
twenties, then went back to BCB because to me at the time it was too easy to
log multiple countries in a fairly short period of time as compared to BCB.

[IRCA] quantum qx loop v.2.0 vs. fsl loop

I probably know the answer to this already, but I'll ask anyway. I'm
thinking of a new England ( ta dx) trip this coming year and plan on
taking my drake r8a with me. I would

Have to forego some luggage, etc. to take my wellbrook loop just to fit it
safely in my trunk.

So... Do I take the quantum loop or should I consider one of the popular
fsl's currently the rage? I have no experience with an fsl but assume it
behaves similar to

The quantum. Thoughts anyone.

Now down to one. I heard Sears & K Mart are about really to go too. With
Amazon, and other services, the catalog stores are no longer needed. Even

There's not much in the way of context here, but I think it would be a
stretch to presume that the government inspects/tests each-and-every item.
The problem is that they approve a "type" of product, and often that's
that..
It isn't clear here whether or not these products in fact even met the type
that had been approved.

I seldom comment on political issues because of my libertarian stance.
However, the gov. ought to put its own house in order first. Their "energy
star" boondoggle Is just that. Their testing is highly specious and what
they tout is largely sent from "greased palms". Even the iconic "sae" and
underwriters labs have questionable testing.
My point is, if the gov. once approves something, they should refrain from
punitive actions down the road against those entities submitting.

There's not much in the way of context here, but I think it would be a
stretch to presume that the government inspects/tests each-and-every item.
The problem is that they approve a "type" of product, and often that's that.

Other than the everpresent noise floor, this is my 2nd complaint of mwdx in
the 21st century. Once we got rid of "radio Disney" in the band, my hopes
returned to the
"Good ole' days" of the '50's thru mid '60's. now it seems espn types
flagrantly violate the hourly (min.) id. And there is still no enforcement.
Maybe what needs to be done is enforcement: "at the open end of the

don't recall ever seeing ta/tp reports from anyone. They may have had a

to reference.
I grew up only thinking ta/tp were relegated to the swl hobby.
I hope we can expand on this issue of soils conductivity vs. domestic dx and
the potential for great dx in less than ideal circumstances.

I think one has to take a couple of things into account here. First is that
the majority of us on this list ( or any list for that matter ) don't know
what DX is like from your location. Second is that some tend to apply their
own "DX standards" to everyone else. Therefore there are always going to be
those who doubt a reception.

Another factor is what details a DX'er provides. Not infrequently the way a
DX'er words their report can open the door to doubters. And the first thing
in that list is how reporting of a het is worded.

At one time or another, probably most of us on this list have doubted
others' logs or have been doubted ourselves. It comes with the territory. A
DX'er has to establish their own criteria and to DX for themselves in that
sense.

Hi Todd,

As one referred to in your comments, I would defer to Neil on this one.
Unless you can ID something about the signal, the music, language, station
ID, or other identifiable characteristic it is best to err on the side of
caution, and not claim it. Another way would be direction finding, but with
skywave propagation anomalies this is not necessarily a sure bet.

Robyo da man. No hissing around sdr "blips",etc. you hear real stuff.
I applaud you. naturally the dc publicans here in u.s. don't agree. They
say anything goes
As long as it's viewable. I don't support that. I diligently listened for
"kfi" back in the '60's. for 2yrs., until one easter recess, I copied with
a lead-in to their next program. In that time, our hobby dictated, it would
be anathema to qsl'ing a station w/o ample evidence. I still adhere to that
philosophy.
Those that do not, well. have their own cross to bear!

I think it might be a combination of any or all of the factors that you
mentioned. You seem to be using good quality equipment for sure. There are
times when there have been solar storms and the band is just a loud buzz so
even locals sound horrible. I recall seeing a map once that showed the best and
worst places as far as ground conductivity in North America goes. I would bet
that can be found using Google.

Hi all….. a topic that has always confounded me is the subject of
“dx deadspots”. Literally geographic areas where nothing of a dx nature seems
to penetrate. I’ve alluded to this in previous threads and blamed it on

Antennas, sunspots, noise…… you know the usual suspects. I’ve even postulated
that poor soil conductivity is a contributor. While much has been written on
these topics (other than soils to my knowledge) I wonder

If any of you have these same frustrations. Naturally I leave “ass time in the
chair” as the last factor. We all know what that means when it comes
to good dx. I’ll even go as far to express that having top notch gear

Is useless if you don’t use it! nevertheless, the perception does exist
that “location, location, blah, blah” may be a significant although unexplored
factor plagueing all of us.

Anyone else experience these blasé feelings?

Hi Tom,

Hopefully you logged something good on 780? Was WGN 720 also off. Due to the
proximity of their towers when there's work on one, the other usually goes
off as well. 73 KAZ

Geez. I was hoping neil wasn't one of the responders to this thread. I
was formerly running his 17' x 64' kaz as my antenna oriented west w/900ohm
resistor as terminator.
My wellbrook is outside on the balcony railing about 5' from the brick
façade. Using a rotator to orient and lmr-240 lead-in. it is about 15'above
grade. I can relocate to
The yard, but was hoping to keep it closer to the shack, where I can keep an
eye on it.

[IRCA] noise

2017-01-30 Thread billy brooks
Something I forgot to mention previously.

I'm experimenting with running my drake r8a and wellbrook 1530 loop on a 12v
7ah battery. while it is a bit quieter, I cant'say conclusively.

Reason being, I still have my trusty acer desktop at hand. But I've
switched it off, and not noticed any real changes. So, the verdict is
still out.

If I pack everything into the truck and visit the country hilltops, I am
sure things will improve. What I'd like is to create a quiet qth where the
dx just "rolls in" with no espn and similar station id violators!

I wouldn't apologize, Bill! You've got a great "rig." And I don't think
ground is nearly as important as it would be to single-ended antennas like
long wires and verticals.

Too much noise is the reason I've curtailed / stopped my dx'ing activities.

I'm re-learning the hobby after 50 non-contiguous years of dx'ing.

Back in my day, dx'ing kfi was a big deal. You tp,ta guys are on an occult

Lots of power line noise in Hawaii. Little good grounding with Lava rock, I
was over there several times and in having dinner with engineer Alan
Roycroft complained that the local coverage of AM stations was poor. The
station(s) could be heard thousands of miles away, but could not always
cover their locals. The rental cars I had, driving out of Hilo up into the
Volcano area, after I got 25-30 miles away, even KIPA 620, KPUA-670 were not
all that great. Yet at night, San Francisco was heard, better than some
locals. Ground conductivity there is not great either, unless the towers are
in the ocean. Richard Wood DXed off local power with running his house off
batteries to get rid of noise.
