Doing fine out here.  Our top wind was just 52 and we had less than an inch of 
rain.  The 7 foot dish is pretty beat up.  I've got a backup for when it 
finally dies.  Will try to reattach some of the elements to the screen with 
plastic ties.  That should buy me another year.  Thanks for asking.

Actually the DX was just a side benefit.  It's the only place near the ocean I 
could afford.  Check out how little it costs to live out here.

Although the stock XHDATA D-808 model already provides good AM sensitivity with 
its 3 7/8" (97mm) loopstick, its performance can be dramatically boosted by 
replacing the stock loopstick with an externally-mounted 7.5" transplant. A 
photo of such an enhanced D-808 model is posted at

This 7.5" transplant loopstick is the same one used for "supercharging" the 
Tecsun PL-380 model, as described in the construction article posted at

enhanced D-808 model would have AM sensitivity similar to that of a stock D-808 
+ Select-a-Tenna combo, but would not require peaking the external antenna 
every time a frequency is changed. This is a huge advantage for quick and easy 
"travel DXing."

seller is now doing a booming business, shipping the model to North American 
customers through Israel. 

After performing two MW and one Longwave 7.5" loopstick transplants on the 
D-808 model, I can confirm that the model is well engineered (or maybe well 
reverse engineered?), with the loopstick connections on the RF circuit board 
unusually accessible, and ideal for soldering larger diameter Litz wire. There 
are actually two terminal connections for this purpose-- most likely to make it 
easy for the XHDATA engineers to test out various loopsticks. 

And a loopstick transplant on the D-808 may be easier to contemplate if you 
consider the fact that you will not be violating the XHDATA warranty by 
replacing the loopstick. Why not? Because there is no evidence of any XHDATA 
warranty on the model, either online, or in the documents shipped along with 
the portable :-) 

 As such, I thought I would submit a D-808 model to a very rough break-in 
test during extensive summer travel these past two weeks. A 7.5" MW loopstick 
D-808 model was taken along during road trips to eastern

D-808 model, I can confirm that the model is well engineered (or maybe well 
reverse engineered?), with the loopstick connections on the RF circuit board 
unusually accessible, and ideal for soldering larger diameter Litz wire. There 
are actually two terminal connections for this purpose-- most likely to make it 
easy for the XHDATA engineers to test out various loopsticks.

And a loopstick transplant on the D-808 may be easier to contemplate if you 
consider the fact that you will not be violating the XHDATA warranty by 
replacing the loopstick. Why not? Because there is no evidence of any XHDATA 
warranty on the model, either online, or in the documents shipped along with 
the portable :-)

 As such, I thought I would submit a D-808 model to a very rough break-in 
test during extensive summer travel these past two weeks. A 7.5" MW loopstick 
D-808 model was taken along during road trips to eastern Washington (complete 
with 100 degree F/ 43 degree C temperatures), rough mountain roads (on Mount 
Rainier, Mount Baker and Hurricane Ridge) and a visit to Vancouver, BC.

 Once the supplied 3.7v Lithium Ion battery is fully charged (via a 
supplied USB-type connector cord), the battery provides exceptional run time. I 
was able to use it for many hours of DXing over two weeks, with no apparent 
loss of power. The audio amp delivers a lot of response, even when signals are 
weak. It takes a little time getting used to the volume control being on the 
left side when the tuning control is on the right, but you catch on pretty 
quick. The enhanced 7.5" MW loopstick model is like the "King of Compact 
Portables," with sensitivity enough to dig out practically everything that any 
other portable on the planet could come up with-- with SSB capability and 
multiple DSP filtering selections to boot. For someone making an overseas trip 
or extended travel from home, it would be a dream portable. This is the first 
radio to use the full capabilities of the American-engineered Si4735 DSP chip-- 
with exceptional results.

 What finally got my undivided attention, though, was when the model was 
accidentally left in the trunk during our visit to Ellensburg, WA-- a location 
famous for 100 degree days in July. Multiple items in the trunk (shampoo, food, 
electric shavers, etc.) were zapped by the 104 degree temperature inside the 
trunk, and were either ruined, or refused to operate. As I turned on the 
burning-hot D-808 model I certainly expected the worst, especially when the 
temperature indicator showed "43 degrees C." Much to my astonishment the model 
performed flawlessly, though, delivering an S9 signal from the Snoqualmie Pass 
TIS station on 1610 kHz. Not once had the D-808 missed a beat over a tough two 
weeks, which included quite a few rough bumps, extremely hot days and long 
DXing hours. Despite the rather dubious design pedigree and lack of any 
manufacturer's warranty the D-808 had gained my respect as a hot-performing 
AM-DXing portable, ready to perform and persevere when conditions are rough. 
Although it's not an Ultralight radio, it certainly is an exceptional portable 
for the price.

I meant to reply a couple weeks ago during the "KXEL petition" thread, but 
since this article about WLW has now become a topic of discussion, here's my 
opportunity to air out my feelings about the band and the hobby. 
 
I guess I am one of those remaining few left who believe in AM radio.  When I 
say believe, I mean that, like Russ, I don't expect it to disappear anytime 
soon.  Nothing gets my ire up more than when a suggestion is made that AM will 
die in X amount of years (5? 10?).   NONSENSE.  AM stations will always have an 
audience.  And, yes, full service radio is alive and well, if you know where to 
look for it.  My goodness, look the service that 50,000 watt KRVN provides 
during daylight hours to the farmers and ranchers of a 5-state area of the High 
Plains (stream it sometime, if you're too far away for its OTA signal to reach, 
and you'll see what I mean).  Same way with KCJJ-1630 in Iowa City, WSLM-1220 
in Salem, Indiana, and gosh knows how many other stations.   LOCAL service to a 
LOCAL audience.  It's a concept that still survives.
 
When I'm not DXing, I listen to KWMT-540 in Fort Dodge, Iowa during the late 
mornings and early afternoons for its classic country & western M-U-S-I-C.  In 
the evenings, I'll often tune into WBBM to hear about what's going on in 
Chicagoland (I have fun trying to keep up with the traffic reports on the 8s!). 
 If I'm up past Midnight, it's WSM and Marcia Campbell for a show that's TRULY 
geared towards the trucking demographic (way better than Red Eye Radio, IMHO!). 
  In the summertime, it's WLW for Reds broadcasts, WTAM for the Indians, WIBA 
for the Brewers, and KOA for the Rockies (not a fan of any of these teams, I 
just tune in because I enjoy the broadcasts!).   And please, PLEASE note, 
folks, that none of what I've listed above is streamed.  The only stations I 
EVER stream on a consistent basis are KCJJ (during the morning drive shift, as 
it has a video stream and chatroom in which I participate -- look for 
"HawkeyeRick") and its sister FM, 99pluskfmh.com.
 
In short, over-the-air is what counts, in this listener's opinion.  The DXing 
hobby means too much to me, and I'm not about to give it or AM radio last rites 
anytime soon, if ever.  The thrill of the chase is what I enjoy, and always 
will.

The AM band is unsuited for a number of things which various bureaucrats or
other outsiders have proposed. I think that's probably the primary reason I
don't expect it to go away very soon. I suspect that when it does, it will
simply die out naturally because of its various limitations coupled with
the cumulative damage from all sorts of industry-sponsored FCC decisions
which have repeatedly wounded it.

be on at 2319 EST.

Nicaragua is in on the low side of 540 KHz (near 539.840) with weak audio at 
some moments, apparently beísbol  play-by-play.

Tuning the band, I would expect to find at least, the other usual suspects from 
Venezuela, Colombia and Cubans notably (just arrived at my listening post).

Last night around 07:30 PM, there was a great opening mainly towards Colombia 
and Venezuela. I still have to review my files but based on what I heard when 
hearing live, I might get at least one station from Venezuela I haven't logged 
yet and I think it was on 920.

Conditions aren't great, but thanks to the temporary absence of WBZ IBOC
noise, I was able to dig out a station under KDKA, which turned out to be
KJJK in Fergus Falls MN, with Radio Reloj also in the mix.  They're running
Fox Sports and would have to be on day rig to be heard here.

I've taped a lot of it, some unattended while I finished off some work. No
IDs heard live. But I'll be logging it as WMUX. Prev heard in Toronto nearly
a year ago under similar circumstances, though had a solid ID there of the
sort Robert Ross described. WAMO 860 Pa, also Catholic, is running similar
hymn-like music though not // or even necessarily the same pieces

Thanks to those who listened, and nice to see it's new for one or more of
you.

Off to listen to it on my ultralight as I get some rest in anticipation of
sunrise DX in a few hours. I also had it in on my sangean with an old Radio
Shack loop. So should come in on my modified Tecsun...

Male DJ said WMUX Hurricane, West Virginia is currently OFF the Feed for
EWTN. He said another sentence after that..but couldn't copy what he said.
 
 So...Even though they are ON the Air way past their Sign-Off time..they
ARE NOT carrying any kind of a feed from EWTN at this time. They are just
playing Inspirational and Choir Music and inserting the odd ID as I listed
above.
 
 Whatever they are doing.it is a NEW STN for me and a good opportunity for
other to log a 1 KW Daytimer from West Virginia!!

It would appear 1090 KAAY is off the air. Not sure for how long going forward,

I ran the Perseus during March 10-12, when conditions were very auroral.
It's taken me three weeks to work through the Perseus files.  The night of
March 10-11, with most skywave signals washed out, signals from the south
snuck under the auroral blanket.  Lots from Mexico, but also some good stuff
from AL, GA, MS, KY and TN.  A strong aurora also enhances ground wave
signals that are normally obliterated by skywave in non-auroral conditions.
So I had excellent signals from regional stations in NY, PA and ON.  The
next night, MAR 11-12 mostly favored Venezuela and Cuba and a few southern
domestics.

I ran the Perseus during March 10-12, when conditions were very auroral.
It's taken me three weeks to work through the Perseus files.  The night of
March 10-11, with most skywave signals washed out, signals from the south
snuck under the auroral blanket.  Lots from Mexico, but also some good stuff
from AL, GA, MS, KY and TN.  A strong aurora also enhances ground wave
signals that are normally obliterated by skywave in non-auroral conditions.
So I had excellent signals from regional stations in NY, PA and ON.  The
next night, MAR 11-12 mostly favored Venezuela and Cuba and a few southern
domestics.

clear pips..5 short, 1 long...those are the pips Argentina uses !! LS10 must
have upgraded power or something (noting that Roy on Cape Cod is commonly
getting them with WBZ phased).

Hmm..can I count this..I need to listen super carefully and see if some
words I can pin down come thru. Anyhow..I nabbed Argentina on 1620 here
years ago when their rlg stn hit X-band before domestics.

WGR is strong of course, but the Sox are clearly there.

At Burnt River ON have logged new catches in Progreso 730 and 750 close to

midnight. Had a Sporting News Radio on 560 that gave an ID sounding very 
much like WQAM (Miami). I'll listen to the 560 recording again the cold 
light of day to ascertain if WQAM is indeed caught.

I'm getting music that sounds like it's being played on a tape recorder 
when the tape is not running smoothly on 750 and 1040 (seems like 
different programming). I'm getting wobblers on 930 and some other 
channels.

Think I'll be up late tonight.

KNZZ is chewing up WTAM here on my westward BOGs. This is most unusual at
night as they are often overpowering WTAM here whereas when on normal day
rig, it takes superb cx and a very deep phase null to get even a trace of
them. I suspect they didn't switch or have some STA for what ever reason. 
Obviously this meant that I had no chance to catch Vegas ESPN on 1100.

We've had a decent CHRB 1140 Alberta mixing with WRVA-VA.

Also from the west: MN 560, WI 580, IA 600, 1060 very strong Mexico City
(though no sign of Calgary). Winnipeg 990 in but not as strong as it could
be. Not that this precludes further stuff...

Halifax earlier on 1140 was quite decent. Earlier had Boston on 1150 for a
new catch.

TAs: 1143 Croatia did quite well, Spain very weak on 999, Longwave Germany
183.

Looks like the A/K indices are dropping, hopefully that bodes well for the
1400 CA test tonight (I highly doubt I'd hear that one even under great cx
but I will try for it nevertheless) and 1210 AZ tomorrow night (I might have
a shot at that one).

night, but CFCO Chatham ON doesn't help. One new catch, an ad for downtown
washington on 1450, and I'm glad I got an area code and hone number,
because it was the station in Washington PA and not the one in Washington
