What this really does is show that a lot of users are not keeping up-to-date anti-virus software and malware protection running on their computers at all times. Having and using those can't keep you safe 100% of the time, but they do a pretty good job. You can lead a horse to water. They're free nowadays. Use them. These things are hitting all of the hobby lists I am on, and I had one hit one of my accounts. There's not much you can do to avoid it besides not using email at all. That's not an option. Maybe. And maybe not. For the many of us who are using web-based email, and still get it hijacked, anti-virus software doesn't even come into play. In the case where one of mine was hit and sent junk to another list, that's what it was - all web-based, despite a hardware firewall, a software firewall and 3 different anti-malware programs actively running. None of that mattered because everything took place on the web - my account got hijacked.
