[IRCA] 1640-1610 PA TIS question
On 1640 last week I heard a very clear loop recording as follows: "This is WPWF986 broadcasting on 1610 AM. This message will repeat." As advertised, it repeated over and over. Just that short message. There is indeed a station with those calls on 1610. It's assigned to PA DoT and seems centred around Harrisburg. However, I was definitely on 1640 - it was underneath Relevant Radio. 1640 WSJP WI is on the air with Relevant Radio programming (Catholic). Heard last night. I guess with WKSH off for so long this would count as a new station? I much prefer the meteor scatter burst heard while starting to type this. On 106.5: "Mobile's best hamburger." It jumped out of nothing on the radio in the next room, really loud. That's WAVH Daphne AL, 4-5 miles out of Mobile. Obviously, the best hamburger in Daphne wouldn't be much of a selling point. [IRCA] 1640 KZLS OK flipping again
** OKLAHOMA. 1640, Jan 31 at 2102 UT check, no news, just `True Oldies` music even at hourtop from KZLS Enid-Hennessey-Oklahoma City. But not for long! Tnx to Artie Bigley for finding this on the reactivated RadioInsight.com board for Oklahoma, posted by Lance Venta, yet *another* format change for 1640; call change coming too? --- ``Reid Mullins And Talk Coming To KZLS Oklahoma City Last Updated on January 30, 2014 at 3:49 pm Champlin Broadcasting will begin shifting "True Oldies 1640" KZLS Enid/Oklahoma City to Talk on Monday, February 3. Reid Mullins, who had hosted mornings at Clear Channel Talk 1000 KTOK until last August will join the station Monday for a daily program from 7 to 10 am [13-16 UT, probably meaning M-F only, not daily]. McCarvilleReport.com states that "The new show on KZLS will bring back the "information and news" paradigm that former KTOK listeners were accustomed to, Mullins said. Guests will include local, state, and national political figures, commentators, and experts in various fields and sectors from agriculture, energy, healthcare, immigration and more." Mullins joining KZLS will kick off another format change at the station, which picked up the Oldies format and KZLS call letters when sister Classic Country "99.7 Hank-FM" KNAH debuted in late September. KZLS will shift to News/Talk in all dayparts by the end of February.`` One comment so far: ``It was a real treat to hear the Oldies on 1640 via skywave at night in the Dallas area. They had a real nice processor setting too and were not handicapped by the reduced analog bandwidth which so many AM stations seem to run as a default these days. Nothing like Oldies in marvelous mono on skywave. I knew it was too good to last :-( Jay Walker``. Re: [IRCA] 1640 unID - TIS possibly from Ohio
There's a whole whack of stations in PA on 1640, many of them in sync with one-another. I've had echo effects on some TIS/HARs in the X-Band. For some HARs I picture micro stations all along a highway, with NOAA there could be repeaters in multiple communities, without any real way to know from afar if you're hearing, say, Clearfield, or, say, Altoona. What I'm hoping to discern from my audio clip is any call letters eras better than mine can make out. Even if I manage call letters, though, pinpointing an actual location isn't guaranteed. Nor do I require that for my own logs. I go with whatever information is available and possible. If that means the QTH goes down as Synchro, so be it. There are more Synchros in my logbook than Springfields ;-) Saul Chernos Burnt River ON Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2013 09:34:37 -0400 Subject: Re: 1640 unID - TIS possibly from Ohio From: walkerbroadcast...@gmail.com To: irca@hard-core-dx.com CC: sau...@sympatico.ca; amfmt...@mailman.qth.net; a...@nrcdxas.org; a...@wtfda.info Wow, thats quite the vast forecast area. This seems to fade at 1:00 of the clip, and a woman's voice comes to the fore. She IDs with WQ-something and I hear something sounding like "Youngstown." I don't think this is the same station, but maybe it is. I am wondering if anyone can make out the calls she gives. Re: [IRCA] 1640 Lake Oswego, OR. to Michigan tonight
Last Halloween's SSS was the best I've ever experienced here and Halloween was lots better than the few days preceeding it, although those were decent like they've been this month. Good job with Disney. Most clearly they don't seem to get out nearly as well as other west coast X-banders. So far I can't find a trace of them, but I haven't carefully listened to Sat. night's recording on 1640 across 0130z yet, but nothing was noted when listening live. Utah is a nuisance on 1640 and KZLS was bothersome. KDIA was also noted with a black preacher while still on day power. Trivially easy west coast X-banders are KNTS 1680 and KFSG 1690 both of which were noted around 0200z Sat. morning when running just 1 kW night power and with me using just one Double KAZ antenna (100 deg BW) rather than the array (60 deg BW) due to wind causing the powerline near one of my two antennas to arc. Fresno comes in on 1680 but not usually as well as KNTS, however, I don't think Tim's antennas (back end of BOGs) are directed very well towards WA. I'm home to DX tonight, Weds and Thurs and lets hope for great cx at sunset. 73 KAZ 35 miles NW of Chicago -Original Message- >From: Tim Tromp >Sent: Oct 27, 2013 10:29 PM >To: "irca@hard-core-dx.com" >Cc: ABDX >Subject: [IRCA] 1640 Lake Oswego, OR. to Michigan tonight > >After a week of dedicated listening between 0115-0130 UTC on 1640, I >finally caught Radio Disney tonight for OR #2. After a week of dedicated listening between 0115-0130 UTC on 1640, I finally caught Radio Disney tonight for OR #2. At 0125 UTC I heard pop music which was // to 1690 KDDZ. Re: [IRCA] 1640 report
Per my QSLs from (then) KXBT, now KDIA, I got QSL #1 from March 10, 1996, then on 1640 kHz. But by April 29, the FCC moved KXBT to 1630 khz, but I don't have the date when the FCC moved them back to 1640. The first regular broadcast day on KXBT was March 19th, 1996 according to the QSL. KXBT was the second X Bander. WJDM 1660 NJ was first, as my QSL comes from Nov 1, 1995. They ran Radio Aahs at the time. Apparently 1660 was planed for sometime as their coverage map for 1660 goes back to July 17, 1992. I agree with Patrick. My own experience has been some TIS operations do use brief instrumental music as a bridge into another announcement. Legal? [IRCA] 1640 TIS
1640 WA Auburn (no ID). New TIS apparently coming from the City of Auburn. Civic and safety-oriented announcements in a bed of EZ and sometimes semi-classical music. Heard "Somewhere My Love" ("Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago") (no, not Dr. Zecchino) twice in a half hour. Nearly broadcast quality. A little astray from the frequency with a low rumble noted against the OR Disney station. Two web sites mentioned, neither of which works. Poor signal along Highway 99 between about 272nd and 338th going southbound; northbound, the parallel power lines kill it completely. No signal at home or even east of Hwy. 99. Noted 6/30 and 7/1 about 2pm PDT both days.
