2008-11-17 Thread Chernos Saul

Willis,
You think CBC is tough to deal with IDing - the suggestion of getting local
content is a good one. Here at the Nfld DXpedition, we hear tons of stations
from Spanish network, sometimes two ir three deep, echoing like mad, and
when you have multiple of, say COPE, or SER, or RN1 stations all on one
channel, and like me you don't understand Spanish beyond a few words, you
are truly challenged. I have not heard CBC NF from Ontario in many years,
and I hear CBK a lot. I think for you it would take either incredible
conditions to the Canadian maritimes, or a well-laid-out, directional and
terminated longwire. I'll put it another way - we do not have a wire pointed
at TN and I have not heard 650 WSM. (Mind you, I did last year using a loop,
but then again up here on The Rock you could hear everythging if you had
the time. I had 1200 WOAI TX the other night on an ultralight. One of our
gang had India 1566 on a Sangean ULR.

Willis, what you need to do is listen just before or just after the news.
They'll announce local weather, for instance, or FM frequencies frequently
for neighbouring towns. The national feed of the news will the same
everywhere. You heard, without a doubt, CBK which gets out really well. I
doubt with 99.9% certainty that it was CBT..Walt.
PS: We also have a few 40 watters on this frequency as well, often heard
in Victoria (and Patrick on the Oregon coast)...that is CBXQ Ucluelet, BC
on the west side of Vancouver Island.

Willis,

True, I realize that, but CBK DOES get out very well. A likely catch.
They probably have one of the best coverages of any North American
station with 50 KW.

Two ways:

First, CBC delays its programming across time zones, so if you can
figure out what show you're listening to, compare it to CBC's on-line
schedule to determine whether you're hearing the Newfoundland schedule
(CBT) or the Central schedule (CBK).

CBC.ca/radio shows what's on now in each time zone. It's showing CBC
Radio Overnight (which is international news/talk programming) in
Newfoundland and The Tonic (which is a jazz show) in Central, so we
can safely assume you have CBK, not CBT.

Second way: while there's no local top-hour announcement, there IS a
local break for weather after the hourly news, usually at about :06
after the hour. In addition to weather forecasts that mention local
cities, there's usually a local ID without calls (eg, You're listening
to CBC Radio One, 540 in Saskatchewan.)

CBC also streams each of its main local stations, so you can compare
streaming audio to what you're hearing.

Willis

If you hear the generic ID there is no way of really knowing. But the
stations will broadcast their own regional programming at scheduled
times and you can be sure then. This happens more often in other
countries in the world, especially in Europe.

Thanks to all the responded. The trouble of waiting for T.O.H. ID is that
they are now gone, QSBed. Perhaps they may return, will continue to montor
540. Scott Fybush gave me a schedula of CBC programs, shows that the show
the tonic with jazz music is on at this time. So, this would mean the I
have possibly logged CBK from this QTH. A FIRST FOR ME. I have heard and
QSLed CBK in the past, but not from Tennessee.

In 1959 they were always strong in the mornings before dawn, when I lived in
Texas.

Would really like to here Newfoundland, as I have never logged them on BCB.
Have a lot of Newfies on 40 meter CW.

Thanks to all for your help.
