That is interesting, 50 KW nights. 1520 will even be in more of a jumble at night. KOMA dominates most nights here on the coast. Perhaps not. There are a few stations with greater night power than day...increased CH power would be the step up. My college radio station at Valdosta State College (now Valdosta State University) in Valdosta, GA is WVVS. It's supposed to be We're the Wonderful Voice of Valdosta State. However, in college, during my heavy metal show, I used to call it the Wicked Voice of Vice and Sin. Somehow it fit, but I used to get some looks whenever I said it out loud. KHJ call sign return was a neat trick. (I think they were Kindness Happiness and Joy, 'doesn't entirely describe L.A. these days...) Often times on late night excursions to Canters deli in L.A. we drive right under their two towers, awesome site. I think I have a KXL T-shirt here for the upcoming convention/auction. The KUJ DX test in 1995 boomed in here, plus I logged them once on regular schedule. 'Logged KMO as well before they gave up those calls. 'Never did bag KTW from here. I have a feeling that if KGY would ever run a nice mid-winter dx test, they could make it here too. Oh look, it's April already. ms > From: mwd...@webtv.net > Date: Thu, 31 Mar 2011 23:53:36 -0700 > To: irca@hard-core-dx.com > Subject: Re: [IRCA] Call letter meanings - 75 years ago > > At least KHJ got the calls back. Re: [IRCA] Call letter meanings - 75 years ago
Here in Southern California during the cold war no less, we had a couple former AM station call signs that I always found humorous. 1) KIEV 870 Glendale CA 2) KGB 1360 San Diego CA. The former claims that the call sign was just assigned sequentially. I don't know what the latter stood for, but their FM still keeps that call sign on 101.5. By the way, 1360 AM is now KLSD %$#! > To: a...@lists.wtfda.info; irca@hard-core-dx.com; a...@nrcdxas.org > From: amdxm...@aol.com > Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2011 02:28:42 -0400 > Subject: [IRCA] Call letter meanings - 75 years ago > > > There have been many lists of call letters and what they stood for, but this > is from a 1935 DX News and might be more authentic than later sources. > > > WRC Washington Radio Corporation > WOS Watch Our State > WJJD James J.
