[IRCA] HDTV Converter Box Hash

2009-02-22 Thread satya
Hi all:

I finally got the wife an HDTV converter box, and it puts out a fair
amount of noise. The noise seems to be both radiating from the box itself
and travelling up the power lines - yippee! It's the Insignia house
brand from Best Buy.

Does anyone know if newer HDTV sets, which don't need the converter box,
also give off a lot of noise, via either direct radiation and/or up the
power lines? To keep the peace here, I would forego my next DX purchase
(or two) and get a new HDTV if that would fix the problem.

Thanks for any info - Kevin S

Kevin-
I have no idea if the digital TV receivers cause any noise, BUT the
converted box does, and big time.

If you want I have an idea you might try before you lay out some big bucks
for a new TV.

I will write you off the list IF your interested in cheap and easy way to
(perhaps) get rid of the noise.

I have an Insignia sitting in the box in the other room. Never used it
as there is no digital here. The Toshiba EDTV has the digital tuner, so
I may never use the converter box anyway. I wonder why the converter
boxes makes noise when the TV sets do not with the digital tuners? I
presume the digital tuners don't in the sets, but there is no digital
here so I guess I wont know until we get some.
How far out does the digital noise carry? Fortunately most people have
Dish, Direct, or Cable here. Few watch the translators.

Kevin:

I have a Pioneer plasma HDTV receiver and it does put out a lot of noise.
As I never use the digital tuner I can't say if it's coming from that part
of the receiver. I'm the only one here that uses it, and never when I'm
DXing, so the noise is not a problem for me.
