Paul,

Then they have sold the station. Good, it may return then. They had a
pretty decent NOS format at one time. They even did their own.

The newspaper is slightly incorrect, the FCC allows licenses up to one year
(not six months) to be silent before they face possible license revocation.
The article mentions they routinely grant a second 6 month window.. which
may be true but they don't go after a license to delet eit after only 6
months.

Plus, even after a year.. if you've been off longer then a year.. but come
back on.. you won't get deleted necessarily. The FCC isn't delete happy like
they used to be.

Wanted to clear that up:)

Thanks Dennis for passing this along. Too bad. I remember meeting the
orig owner back in the 80s when he stopped by KSWB. He said he was going
to put KBBM onthe air in Waldport. Bob & I wondered if there was enough
advertising to support a station there as I think Waldport had like 1400
people then and it hasn't grown all that much since. He built the 250w
(then on 850) from scratch. I think he said, he got the station on the
air for less than $50K. The gentleman (I don't remember his name at the
moment), was quite elderly then. He sold it several years later and the
new owner applied for 820 and boosted to 1 KW, later night operation
with 15w. But since the orig owner had the station, it never made money.
He was retired and money was not an issue with him. He just wanted
something to do and he had been in broadcasting his whole life. The
station covered mainly Waldport, and I doubt had many listeners. Not a
lot of ads when I listened through the years. He never got into Florence
or Newport well, so I am sure it was hard to sell time there.
There have been other stations in OR go silent and have never returned
through the years, KIVR 1400 Cave Junction and 1300 Myrtle Creek to name
two. Unknown if 1040 Portland will ever return or 660 Junction City.
Don't know if 1450 Eugene returned or not. The lst I heard they ere
still off. KAPT 1220 Salem signed off back in the 70s and it took years
before a new Salem station applied for 1220. Then KWAY 1570 Forest Grove
OR that went off in 1966 and never returned. Probably KORC will be
another to never return as the owner said and I doubt anyone will ever
apply for an AM station in little Waldport. . Glad I got them QSL'd

In an e mail to the President of KORC, Linc informed me that KORC should
be up to 5 KW days by the Spring of 2011. It will be interesting to hear
what their signal will be up on the North coast then. Right now off the
SW EWE, I still get some KGNW QRM. On the other hand 630 that also has
Seattle (Edmonds) and Coquille (South Coast), KWRO Coquille is dominant
on the channel. KWRO is 5 KW days.

well with Adult Standards fo many years. Also to the South, Florence at

Yes, their tower is quite short. It is only 54.10 degrees electrical height. A
quarter wavelength, which is desirable, is 90 degrees electrical height. It is
very close to a bay so the ground conductivity should be pretty good.

A quarter wavelength at 820 is 300 feet. Their tower is 180 feet.

Re: [IRCA] KORC 820 Waldport, OR

2010-01-07 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
The reason KORC doesnt get into Newport well isnt because of lack of power,
but rather they operate, I think, on a tower much shorter then 1/4 wave for
820hz.

Secondly, I know of one medium sized southern town where there are THREE
stations doing country. Why? because thats where the money is. I don't know
whats being done in Newport area and environs, but.. there may be one
station doing a format and KORC thingks they can do it better or siply take
some of the pie because the pie for one format may be big and although one
station is doing format a already, theres more money to be had by sharing
format a then by being the only contender in format b.. especially if format
b doesnt get alot of agency or naitonal buys.

I wish KORC luck and hope the new buyer does well, whatever it is.

Paul,

The market is too small for a 1 KW station on AM there. Too many other
stations. The orginial owner did ok with adult standards, but the
ownership of KORC has been bouncing around for years. Too many stations
in the market and not enough ad money. C&W, oldies, AC, are all taken on
FM. I wish them luck. KNPT is the big talk station in the market too, as
KAST is here. If KORC could get up to 5 KW days, they would get into
Newport well and that would help, but still they have to find something
people are interested in. Music, FM audio will be better. The last few
years in listening off and on to KORC found a syndi format, not live and
only local ads, net news mostly. You could be listening to any station.
The old KORC was much more community connected as local KAST is. But
time wll tell. Too many stations today and not enough ad money to go
around.

Re: [IRCA] KORC 820 Waldport, OR

2010-01-07 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Adultya standards aint going to work well for KORC< the station can'\t and
didn't survive well with that format.. thats why the station was for sale.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some form of country or late 50s thru mid
70's oldies. Talk radio is possible too

Thanks Dennis. It will be interesting to see if KORC makes it this time.
The originial owner that put the station on the air on 850 with 250w
(daytimer) just wanted a small adult standads station to serve Waltport,
a small retirement town of a couple thousand. Even with the boost to 1
KW days and the move to 820, hardly gets it into Newport 15 miles to the
North that well. Running another format, other than Adult Standards may
not work well as if AC or Rock, they will have to go head to head with
more powerful FMs in the listening area. At least Adult Standards has a
nitch in that market that others aren't doing other that KBCH Lincoln
City 45 miles to the North is doing and KBCH has been Adult Standards
for years. They do have some talk days too. But KBCH does not have much
of a signal in Waltport.

[IRCA] KORC 820 Waldport, OR

2010-01-07 Thread vroomski

>From a posting on the Portland PDX forum.

The man who is buying KORC 820 Waldport, OR is renting office space
at 140 Verbina St. in Waldport. He hopes to be on air March 1, 2010
if approved by the FCC. He said the format would be music, but only
said that it would not be country or music for the nearly dead.
