Re: [IRCA] OT 2014 Dodge Caravan radio question

2017-03-16 Thread Patrick Martin
My old 65 Rambler, 1970 Impala, as well as the 89 & 97 Caravans all had good
radio in them. There are radios out there that are sensitive, but getting one
to fit the dash may be another issue.

Internet radio is not practical on the coast. Unless I go with a carrier
like Verizon, the others are more spotty and I have my cel phone account with
Verizon and to have enough data to stream radio would be quite costly. Now if I
lived in Portland or the Valley, Seattle, etc, the charges are less as there
are many carriers to choose from. We have several out here, but Verizon has by
far the best coverage, but also is the most expensive. I do have a wifi radio
at home as well as the Roku for radio & TV, but getting the signal off the
Verizon tower is expensive if I want to run it all day while I go from job to
job.

Patrick,

My experience with car radios has been not 100% but pretty much the
older the better. My folks had a 1960 Chevy when I was in High School
and the radio in it far outperformed any of the radios in newer
vehicles. I lived in Tucson at the time and I could, especially in the
winter hear KOMA at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

The AM radios in most aftermarket car stereos are even worse.

Re: [IRCA] OT 2014 Dodge Caravan radio question

2017-03-16 Thread Patrick Martin
I am not hearing noise on the radio. That issue has been solved. Infact both
the 89 & 97 Dodge Caravans I always had some ignition noise (spark plus, etc),
but the radio in the 2014 is fairly quiet on AM, but some not very sensitive.
Of course if I increase the sensitivity, possibly the the car noise will get
into the radio more.

Re: [IRCA] OT 2014 Dodge Caravan radio question

2017-03-16 Thread Patrick Martin
Karl,

I did have the noise problem with the radio, but found the regular hood mounted
steel whip was loose. I tightened it down and suddenly the noise is gone, but
the AM section is not very sensitive. A far cry from my 1997 or 1989. I think I
will try to extend the whip a foot or two higher with some stiff copper wire
and see if the gain increases. It looks like I can unscrew the whip as it
looks threaded to the base. If that is the case, installing a longer whip might
be the answer. It could be, the AM section is just poor. I know some car radios
are terrible on AM. If that is the case, the only other answer is to replace
the Stereo with something better like a Kenwood or Pioneer, but of course
getting anything like that to perfectly fit the dash would not be easy
probably. The Stereo uses a 2 din set up, so it would have to match up. Gone
are the days when the radios were easy as you said. Everything is way to
complicated in today's world.

Thanks Karl. I will post any improvements.

I just found that out today from another DXer. So that is not the issue. Maybe
the radio is not that sensitive. I could always add a couple feet of wire to

Hi Pat:
A couple of things to keep in mind here.
AM radio antennas are usually either etched into windshields or poorly coupled
into rooftop modules that also designed for satellite reception.
Since new vehicles are truly spaceships, they are equipped with an arsenal of
CPU driven computing and logic. This creates a beehive of computer noise.Even if
your car's AM radio is sensitive and selective, the onboard noise will mask what
it can really hear. All the SDR magic in the world isn't worth much with a +20
noise level.Even worse, when you are in 'aux' mode with the car nearly off,all
the CPUs keep purring away. There is no relenting even if you are sitting in a
parking lot or at a sea shore.
The new world answer is Internet radio now common in cars.Driving home, I can
hear Radio New Zealand International in perfect stereowithout any worries about
propagation. I can hear several varieties of ABC Australia, too.It compensates
for my 9580 withdrawal every morning!I'm really good except when I pass a pole
pig sending out signals like a spark gaptransmitter from 110 years ago. The
more things change
Pat: I doubt a new Caravan has an AM trimmer. It is all incorporated into the
design now.It is probably software controlled.I have memories of removing knobs
on pushbutton car radios to trim the antenna matching. Those days are gone - but
we are not gone yet! Also, forget the AM boosters. They only amplify noise.Best
solution: Drive closer to the AM station (how sad.)Enjoy the cow pastures and
beautiful seashores.

I recently bought a 2014 Dodge Caravan as my old 1997 finally quit. Anyway, I
like the vehicle, but I found the AM section of the radio nearly useless (FM
and CD are fine). The noise level was terrible with computer noise. Yesterday
in checking the antenna was not too tight. I tightened the antenna and the
noise is gone. The signal strength could be better. I have not taken the radio
out to check, but is there a peaking screw (cap) like there used to be? Anyone
know? I see there are AM boosters for car radios, but I presume that may
generate noise.

Any thoughts?  The old Caravan AM sections were pretty decent in sensitivity,
but not many listen to AM now. Thanks.

Re: [IRCA] OT 2014 Dodge Caravan radio question

2017-03-15 Thread Volodya S
Patrick, I agree with Steve. Any new car I've driven (my own, and rental)
have generally been pretty poor on AM. I just drove a Nissan Leaf
electric, and it was simply awful on AM. Everytime I accelerated, I could
hear all of the electronics whirring and wining, even on strong stations.
FM was fine.73, Walt

Re: [IRCA] OT 2014 Dodge Caravan radio question

2017-03-15 Thread Hawkins

The AM radios in most aftermarket car stereos are even worse.

one reason I was wondering if there is some adjustment to peak the antenna like
years ago. But with so much computer stuff today, there is probably some chip and
self adjusts, but I have no clue.

Re: [IRCA] OT 2014 Dodge Caravan radio question

2017-03-15 Thread Patrick Martin
Jim,

I have had a lot of Caravans starting with the 89, then the 97, and now the
2014. Both the 89 & 97 had ignition noise on AM, but the radios were fairly
sensitive. This one is nothing to write home about regarding sensitivity. That
is one reason I was wondering if there is some adjustment to peak the antenna
like years ago. But with so much computer stuff today, there is probably some
chip and self adjusts, but I have no clue.

I had a 1992 or so Caravan. Radio was good, but then one day it started
hashing badly. No longer able to get CBL 740 which should have been easy
from here in the day. I took it to an ace repair shop and the guy said it
was "clouds". I explained that clouds cause nothing like this, but he
completely dismissed what I said. Never went there again. Russ Edmunds
suggested grounding the hood to the body but that didn't do anything. Jim

[IRCA] OT 2014 Dodge Caravan radio question

2017-03-14 Thread Patrick Martin

Thanks.
