[IRCA] Surprise

2019-06-27 Thread David Faulkner via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Hi All:
Sometimes you can listen to a station for a long time, thinking it's one of
your most wanted, and never hear so much as a local spot or ID. At other times
. . .

1330; KNSS, KS, Wichita 6/27/19, 2252 ELT I was just passin' through 1330 on my
way down to 1310 and stopped long enough to catch the end of a promo and, loud
and clear, "On 1330, KNSS." As I said, much wanted. Also noted very good signal
on what was almost certainly KGLO, 1300, Mason City, Iowa, carrying the Twins
game. Headed for K-Glow land this weekend for our son's installation as pastor
of the First Congregational Church of Buffalo Center, Iowa.
Just an observation; except for a couple of weak locals it is very hard to find
a strong signal at night on any regional or local channel around here. WXGO,
1270, Madison, IN dominates 1270 at night here and for many years about the
only readable signal on 1440 at night was WPRS, Paris, Illinois with its
hundred watts. In Michigan such channels tended to have two or three strong
signals. In the southeast, I have noted, unless there is a local signal those
channels contain such a hideous roar of stations as to be unlistenable. How do
DXers down there survive?

[IRCA] Surprise DX on 1410!

2013-07-26 Thread Stephen H. Ponder
Sat down in the easy chair tonight to do some "catch-up" work on my job search
log, picked up my DT-400W to do some casual tuning around, and was quite
surprised to hear an ID from "Archangel Radio, 1410 WNGL" in Mobile, AL, as
they were heading into the "Live Hour" program at 9:00 PM CDT.

I had not heard this station before, so I did some quick research and found out
that before becoming WNGL, Catholic Radio for the Archdiocese of Mobile, AL,
the station had been WUNI from 1963 to 1984. I verified them in 1979 when I
lived in Charlotte, NC. They sent me a small "WUNI-Bird" lapel pin with my
verie!!

If you hear them, their website is www.wngl1410am.com

They also stream online via TuneIn at tunein.com/radio/WNGL-1410-s30845/

I also found a great link for digging into the history of Alabama broadcasters!
It's the Alabama Broadcast Media Page. The link is at:

[IRCA] Surprise Appearance from KHGG 1580!

2006-11-03 Thread Stephen Ponder
Last night (11/02) around 9:25 PM CST, I stumbled
across a station on 1580 with commercial spots for
businesses in Van Buren, AR. They were barely on
top of the mix, but they were there. At 9:30 PM,
I was surprised with an ID as "KHGG News-Talk 1580,
Van Buren, Arkansas" (or at least that's what I
heard). They had already started to slip beneath
the surface of the jumble. At around 9:33 PM they
quickly dove under.

DRAT IT! I was in bed, at the time, suffering
from, well, let's just say that my fish sandwich
wasn't the best that I've had. NO RECORDER,
NO LOGBOOK, and way too weak to jump out of bed
to get them.

Maybe I'll get them again tonight.
