Definitely an improvement on yesterday with a nice upper band sunrise lift.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

1566 HLAZ woman in Chinese 1611UT; at 1645UT this was also very readable with a
man in Russian

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

747 JOIB sign off music box 1544UT

972 HLCA oriental pop vocal maxed out at 1555UT, slightly less vigorous Korean
talk a couple of minutes earlier

1557 Taiwan, RTI man in Chinese 1606UT; was weaker before the hour with woman
singing a capella and talking, parallel with webstream
https://www.rti.org.tw/radio/onAirPlayer/id/1 which was delayed by about 30
seconds

1593 CNR1 pop vocal //6175 1613UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

774 JOUB sign off music box 1541UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

567 //594 1534UT

594 //567 1535UT, underpowered today

828 JOBB sign off music box 1543UT

873 JOGB //828 1543UT

1017 island sounding vocals, likely Tonga 1519UT

1287 pop music 1601UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)
 738 891 945 1098 1188 1206 1242 1296 1359 1377 1422 1458 1494 1503 1512 1548
1575  seemed to be Asian;
1098 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

An odd morning, with mostly big guns, but a couple of Chinese as
well, plus a brief pre-sunrise lift, and HLAZ not showing its nose
until 40 minutes after sunrise.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

594 JOAK woman in Japanese on phone, man in studio 15191UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

639 CNR1 man in Chinese //6125 1544UT
774 JOUB man and woman in Japanese 1541UT, during pre-sunrise lift
that lasted only a few moments

972 HLCA man and woman in Korean 1543UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

693 JOAB woman and man in Japanese //774 1503UT
747 JOIB man and woman in Japanese 1514UT //828
1566 HLAZ assumed. Man mumbling with Russian intonation from 1639UT
on, fading up and down, peaking 1702UT with solo male hymn. Not heard earlier

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

567 JOIK woman talking //594 1501UT
828 JOBB man in Japanese //747 1531UT
837 woman and man talking, sounded like Chinese (definitely not //594), CNR5?
873 JOGB woman talking //774 1504UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

Not an outstanding morning by any means with no sunrise enhancement
particularly, but a few audios just the same. All seemed to be Asian.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

back to normal

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

not today

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

1566 HLAZ man in Japanese 1321UT, and got back up to this level at
times during the shut down of the Japanese program.

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

594 woman talking, Japanese inflection 1531UT
747 JOIB man talking //774, 1525UT, then a chanting oriental sounding vocal
774 JOUB as above, but also noted 1356UT w/man talking, fading down
to Chinese lessons s/off tune and pips

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

972 1314 1593 seemed to be Asian; 1098 more likely DU

A bit of a mix today, some Aussie, but more Asia than expected.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not today either

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

972 was close at times, 1344UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

612 4QR likely man in DU English 1518UT, weaker by 1535UT, but at
that time, easily matching the strength of 610 domestics
828 JOBB soft instrumental music and pips 1200UT, beginning of
English lessons: "Welcome!" by man.
972 HLCA man and woman in Korean, into pop ballad 1344UT; a reprise
with androgynous male pop music 1526UT; still there but weak, by 1554UT
1116 4BC likely w/man in DU English, woman on phone 1454UT; somewhat
weaker at 1536UT, but still hanging in there
1575 likely VoA woman in SE Asian language 1348UT, man on phone;
signal in and out until past 1400UT, with no apparent ID on hour

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

738 Tahiti likely. Man talking, French inflection 1001UT
747 JOIB recognizable woman's voice for the English lessons 1320UT
774 JOUB; extreme minimalist DX, man talking (3LO?) mixing with s/off
chimes 1541UT
792 man mumbling 1535 UT, no possible parallels, but there is a
Brisbane station here

936 man mumbling 1525UT; note that yes, there is a Brisbane station here
1566 pop music 1541-2UT, likely HLAZ per past listening
1593 CNR1 woman talking, then piano music 1533UT //6125, held in
until after 1538UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

Heard some of what Bruce did, but not all. As he pointed out,
sunrise boost in a big way; I wonder if Dennis started listening just
a moment or two too late, given his sunrise is about 15 minutes
before mine. One other point to note is that all signals were
better on the north Flag this morning.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ woman in CC 1545UT; audio started about 1506UT, but didn't
get thunderous until 1540UT or so
1593 CNR1 man in CC 1549UT; still hanging in there fairly well at
1600UT w/pips and Beijing time check

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1386 NHK2 mx box peaking 1543UT
1593 NHK2 mx box cutting up CNR1 at 1541UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

1422 JORF likely, man talking JJ, but lots of splash 1544-1545UT
1494 unID male ballad 1548UT, followed by man in Tagalog?
1575 VoA men in SE Asian language, one on phone, 1546 and 1552UT; at
1600UT, Voice of America ID in EE

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

1314 JOUF? woman talking, JJ inflection 1542UT
1512 NHK2 mx box 1543UT
1602 NHK2 mx box 1544UT

Strongish het, no or near imaginary audio (either undermodulated or

2014-01-19 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
This morning I seemed to have been on a better planet than Bruce
wasmore like the coastal version of what Nigel was describing,
right down to the plethora of carriers. There must have been more
splatter today, as there were quite a lot of strong carriers
not...quite...delivering audio. Pre-sunrise enhancement from about
1525 to 1545UT here, quite definitely, and applying mostly above
1000kHz. My major catch was just moments before sunrise however...

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ...1344, the JJ s/off, then lots of CC talk and some mx from
1530 to 1545, fading up to excellent levels
1593 CNR1 various levels of hugeness after firm ID //6175 at 1514UT;
probably best at 1548UT, top overseas signal on the band in more ways
than one, and accompanied by a second station, woman singing fluidly,
which I believe was my catch of the month (maybe the year?)Taiwan
Fisheries (see below)

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

the above, passing through

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

594 JOAK man in JJ 1405-06UT
774 JOUB man in JJ 1404UT
1044 CRI woman in JJ 1527UT, ID'd as //5980 at 1518UT
1116 unID. man and woman in CC 1533UT, not //5925, so not sure which CC it was.
1377 CNR1 man in CC //6175 1534UT, peaking 1344UT oriental singing by woman
1575 VoA woman in SE Asian language 1426UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

1035 CNR1 man talking, a few words slipping through //1593 at 1532UT,
musical interlude, and more talk

1098 CNR11? chanting 1522UT, no parallel available
1143 ? instrumental mx 1538UT
1242 JOLF? man talking, JJ inflection 1508UT
1278 man talking, then woman, sounded CC? 1540UT
1305 woman talking 1535UT, but another station with man talking at
the same time??

1314 JOUF ? man and woman talking 1535UT, JJ inflection
1332 JOSF? woman talking rapidly, JJ inflectionn 1541UT
1458 man talking, CC sounding 1544UT, not CNR1; sounded like a mess
of signals on the channel
1593 Taiwan Fisheries. 1548UT. While CNR1 was blistering in, there
was a woman singing a lilting little number way underneath, that sure
sounds like what Taiwan Fisheries archive
(http://www.frs.gov.tw/newweb/live.asp?d=2014/1/19) says was being
played just at 23:48 Taiwan time. By 1550UT a woman was talking
u/CNR1, and so there was on the archive also..sure do like those archives!

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

I was all set to report evening audio on 279 at 0630UT, when I
realized I hadn't sent in the TP report from this morningwhere
did the day go?

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

774 JOUB woman in JJ 1425UT, very briefly; mostly poorer than this

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a

774 passing through..

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be

understood by a native speaker:

747 man in JJ //828 1425UT
828 man in JJ 1425UT; both these and 774 were still there (weakly)
for the 1540UT s/off

972 HLCA man in KK at 1422UT
1566 HLAZ man in CC 1555, only TP left on band by now, but 594 and
1287 came back weakly a couple of minutes later

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

558 vocal pop mx, 1546UT, seemed to be only TP audio at this time
594 JOAK man talking 1520UT, woman talking at 1559UT, pips on hour
873 JOGB man talking //747 1537UT
954 man talking 1602UT; JOKR?
