[IRCA] TP 31 Jan Victoria version.

2019-01-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Once more into the bucket, dear friends (with apologies to Shakespeare, who
likely wasn't a DXer, and with conditions like this morning, who could blame
him?)

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

not in the slightest

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

the above passing through

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

too much to ask for

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

594 JOAK man talking, very weak and ragged but clear enough to guess Japanese
1459UT; rewarded at 1500UT with pips

1017 man talking, perhaps island language 1518UT, likely Tonga

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

747 972 1593 seemed to be Asian;
 891 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

Ultimately, that or another Kiwi WebSDR will be located at Masset in the Haida
Gwaii - which is an awesome location for some great DX early warning data
gathering.

I’m looking forward to better radio conditions and a higher MUF - looking at 30
MHz of largely empty spectrum is depressing.

Not a lot of audio this morning, but lots of carriers

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

774 JOUB peak at 1457UT with woman singing followed by woman in Japanese
1566 HLAZ female vocal 1552UT; earlier and later, there was Chinese
talk, but at weaker level. Although quite readable after 1600UT
(along with CNR1-1593), did not last very ong

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK peak at 1555UT man in Japanese
1593 CNR1 peaking at 1536UT, CNR1 news sounder, and man in Chinese;
also 1556UT man in Chinese //6125

talk or music)

693 JOAB woman singing //774 1457UT
774 3LO assumed 1445UT; see 3GI below
828 3GI assumed; another man talking quickly took over from JOBB
below, and was //774 where 3LO took over from JOUB; 1444-45UT

828 JOBB man talking //774 which was stronger, with man in Portuguese 1442-3UT
891 man talking, DU English intonation 1445UT
972 woman talking, possibly Korean? 1555UT
1422 man mumbling 1528UT, couldn't guess language in splash, though
seemed more Japanese than Chinese

Nick, I got up early this morning for the action, and to see if I could
hear reactivated PNG Bougainville on 6020 and 3325. Alas, MW was terrible,
as you observed, and PNG was not active, unlike the previous morning :-(

2015-01-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Sunrise enhancement was pretty minimal, with possibly HLAZ making a
little noise, but a couple of DU's brightened things up earlier,
and maybe one lonely Asian .

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

no...

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

and, no

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

738 likely Tahiti. Rock mx noted at this level 1329 and 1435UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

774 3LO? vocal country mx at 1329UT sure didn't sound like NHK2,
more likely Saturday Night Country from ABC
972  HLCA?? man talking 1416UT, really too weak to guess at language;
at 1421UT came back for a bit, with a woman murmuring agreement to
said man, which does sound a bit like Korea

1566 woman talking 1525-9UT, but again too weak for a language guess.

Strongish het, no or near imaginary audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

1530UT when a small enhancement started to occur,

an interesting concurrence Nick. I was watching for FT5ZM on Amsterdam
Island (Indian Ocean midway between Western Australia and Madagascar) this
morning on 160mover a 5 minute period between 1530 and 1535, his signal
built from nothing to almost 579, we worked and 60 seconds later he was
gone. Looks like we enjoyed the same 'peak' which for the FT5 was right on
our common grayline.

Re: [IRCA] TP 31 Jan, Victoria version

2014-02-01 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Some years ago, I did an article for QEX on being able to use
overseas MW stations as possible indicators of enhancement on 160m
Steve. I think you may have helped prove the point, and Bob Brown
would have immortalized your contact in an article if he was still
going strong. That's pretty near antipodes DX isn't it?

Of course, maybe, judging by your DX, I should have checked for India
on 1566 around that time; although HLAZ was peeling the paint just then.

For future reference when firing up on 160m, maybe you should check
out http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/test/display.htm for real
time signal strength updates from this part of the world on MW, and
see if you can find some other good DX. I aim it west during the
overnight hours until sunrise, then shift to north for daytime and evening.

best wishes,

Nick

yes...very very close which makes me wonder if this is more of a 'normal'
dawn enhanced antipodal occurrence and less to do with the grayline as their
sunset was almost an hour earlier than our sunrise. It's encouraging that
their signal pops-up every morning on 160m like clockwork, right at our
sunrise and then vanishes shortly thereafter...too bad their wasn't a MW
outlet there to see what it does at the same time!

For future reference when firing up on 160m, maybe you should check out

Yes...I have checked it out a few times when I hear some TA carriers to see
what it is indicating. I don't really have a proper BCB antenna, other than
my 160m wire, but am thinking about some sort of loop.

Cheers / Steve

Again, not a good morning, but there was a sunrise enhancement, just
not spectacular, and almost all upper band. Listened around 1440UT,
1515UT and after 1530UT, and am beginning to get a deeper
appreciation of the variety of electrical noises on offer these
mornings, at least three different types. A whole new hobby awaits.

(Oh, as for the possibility of 612 being //738 yesterday, my
