I have been SWLing since 1971 and I have never experienced this kind of odd
reception pattern... ever; TA hets on medium wave and virtually NO SW reception
of any kind above 5 MHZ -- apart from the impossibly irrepressible Radio Havana
Cuba
on 49M - audible when there is absolutely nothing else on the air.

[IRCA] TP for 7 Jan from Victoria, BC

2010-01-07 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Not as much time available this morning, but it seemed better in the lower
portion of the band, and maybe a little down from yesterday. Hard to tell, as
fade ups are so erratic that the longer I listen, the more I hear. The
following are from 1350, 1430 and 1515UT listening.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

774 JOUB
828 JOBB

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

279 R. Rossii
594 JOAK
603 likely HLSA, w/woman in KK talk at 1520UT; earlier there had been two
stations but weaker
639 CNR-1 //5030 (and stronger than 5030; Colin is right about the SW
conditions)
747 JOIB

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be
understood by a native speaker

549 sounded like woman in RR at 1439, so Mayak?
567 JOIK //594
648 likely V of Russia at 1440UT, but no SW //s heard
873 JOGB //828
936 at 1517UT, man talking didn't sound CC, but woman did, so Anhui?
1017 CRI //5965; two stations occasionally
1575 likely VoA

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

558 at 1520, not //603, so JOCR?
666 seemed //594 so JOBK
738
846 not //594 and w/SAH; no clues
972 presumed HLCA, strong carrier
1287 likely JOHR

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

1053 earlier on, 1566

best wishes,

Nick
