programming. Funny that here in Ca and Az we have GY stations with three letter

I think someone already mentioned that KGY 1240 Olympia, WA, is another three
letter call on a local channel. I heard them in Spokane (300 miles away) for
the first time only about a year ago.

Doesn't KWG 1230 Stockton, CA, still exist? I've never heard them but I'd
 love to.

My local KTRW 630 Opportunity, WA (suburb of Spokane) uses the slogan KTW I
think as a reference to the old KTW 1250 Seattle. KTRW runs conservative
talk and some religious programming. I actually worked for them back in the
late 70s/early 80's when they were KZUN, initially running MOR (middle of the
road) music and then went CW to compliment their then FM sister KZUN-FM
96.1, which had gone CW. 630 changed calls to KGGR while I was still there
and took on an oldies format. This was in 1982 and I left in 1983 to work at
KXLY 920 and KXLY-TV. 630 has been through numerous call changes and
 ownership changes since then.

The KTRW calls were originally, in this market at least, on 970, which is now
KTTO Sacred Heart (Catholic) radio. That was in 1988 when the station changed
format to traditional country and used the slogan True Country.

Prior to that, 970 was KZZU and simulcast then sister station KZZU-FM 92.9
with Top 40 music. KZZU(FM) is still Top 40. 96.1 FM here is back to CW,
after at least a couple format changes over the years, with the call letters
KIXZ and uses the slogan Kicks 96.

Stan,

KGY 1240 is a regular on groundwave here. Fair signal days
KWG I got QSL'd back in the late 60s when they were Top 40. I have a
local on 1230 and I don't hear Stockton as often. In the old days KVAS
(then) was not 24 hours.
I well remember another 3 call letter station for years in Spokane,
the old KHQ 590. I think the TV is still KHQ isn't it? Same is true for
KGW TV Portland.

Mike,

Yes, KREX. I believe I have one of those cards too. A lot of great cards
in the past with pictures of the stations. Of course stations never
changed call letters much in those days and the old station could have
the card for decades. I got a lot of really old ones when I started
DXing back in the 60s.Some dating back to the 30s and 40s. Even in the
80s, once in a while a station would send me a very old card from the
past. Last week I got a nice new full color card from KCVR Lodi CA. They
have a new QSL card. Those are getting rare these days. I can see why a
lot of stations don't get cards, even if they could afford them, as the
station may change calls the next day! KCVR has had those calls for many
years.

[IRCA] Three letter calls on TV

2011-04-02 Thread Stan Weisbeck
To confirm for Pat Martin, the KHQ calls do live on on Channel 6 here in
Spokane. I guess I should say digital Channel 6 because they actually
broadcast on RF Channel 15.

I was sad when 590 dropped the KHQ calls back in the early 80's. They were
still co-owned with KHQ-TV, but the owners put their radio stations up for sale
and they sold pretty quickly. KHQ-FM 98.1 became KISC (Kiss FM) and still has
those calls and slogan with a soft rock format. 590 became KLSN with the
slogan Listen 5-90, but they later became KAQQ, and then several years ago,
at least, they dropped the adult contemporary music format, becoming
conservative talk, and took on their current calls of KQNT.

I, like Pat Martin, wish that heritage stations would keep their three letter
calls, and just change slogans if they change formats. I think it's still
true, though, if radio and TV stations split ownership, they can't keep the
same calls, except with special permission.

I know KING-FM 98.1 Seattle, got special permission to keep its calls when it
was sold off from KING-TV. I wish 1090 Seattle was still KING!

Re: [IRCA] Three letter calls on TV

2011-04-02 Thread Patrick Martin
Stan,

I have tried to QSL every 3 call letter station I have heard to date
since I started in 1965 and I think I have 100% of what I heard QSL'd
for 3 call stations, but there are a lot of 3 call signs in the Midwest
East I haven't heard. One comes to mind WOL-1450 and I really doubt I
will ever hear that one from the West Coast.
Salem BCing tried to get the old KOL and KMO calls back, but all they
could do is to get KKOL and KKMO.
I don't see the sense in the FCC giving back the old calls again, as
they did that in the early 80s, just to find most if not all changed
back. KRE-1400 was a good example. The old KRE calls were there long
before I was at the dials. By the time I started, they were KPAT. But
once they changed back, I relogged 1400 and got the QSL. Within a few
weeks, 1400 had changed again. I guess many corporate heads don't care
about station history. You are right, a new slogan would work fine with
a new format. They only have to give calls once an hour and the slogan
could be given over and over in that hour, so people would think they
were listening to a new station with new slogans the format. Calls are
more important in the U.S. than they are in many other countries, like
Latin America. Slogans have always been big there.

If you listen to KTTO, just cough when they do an ID...it will sound just
like KWG. Same goes for the old KYA. It also is Sacred Heart radio.
Original programming is a thing of the past unless you're a college station.
