Re: [IRCA] west coast TA tonight

I’d be dead in the water more often than not without the NHP Fishbarrel.
In the 1970’s, Nick and I were each other’s early warning system and having an
instant method of measuring current condition is, to me, priceless.

Pot, stirred.

North Flag here as well; that's what the

Re: [IRCA] West Coast TA reports

2016-09-23 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Here in MA we're likely one hop closer to Spain than Romania so RNE is
typically dominant on 855.

Most nights recently it has been booming in.

Spain, being like the "Cuba of Europe" AM-wise, has many parallels in its major
networks (RNE, COPE, SER) just as there are many Cuban Rebeldes, Progresos, and
Relojs.

RNE network, of which 855 is a member, also has blasters on 585, 639, 738, 774,
1107, etc. and many more second-tier (10 kW class) stations on other channels.

If you can't log the other parallels there, they would certainly be numerous on
any western Europe web-based receiver. And, of course, there are webstreams
from the stations / networks themselves.

Talk is not the easiest thing to parallel, so if you can find a period
containing music, that will make things easier.

Where your paths to Europe from Pacific NW are closer to over the pole, the
difference in distance to Romania versus that to Spain is less than it is here
on the East Coast. So on that end the signals might be closer in strength.

Romania 855 has a bunch of parallels too. 1179 does pretty well here. In good
openings from the car at the beach I've had 756, 855, 909, 1152, 1179, 1332,
1458, 1530, 1593, and maybe some others.

To my ears the Romanian language sounds a bit like Portuguese: enunciation
somewhat "mushier" than the crisper sound of the other related Romance
languages of Spanish, Italian, and Latin. But clearer than French which is the
most nasal / mushy of the Romance languages and not as linguistically close (in
most respects) to Latin as are Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian.

Here's a suggestion: post audio clips of what you hear. Then the rest of us
can take a crack at it. Use a patch cable, not something like speaker to
microphone (that inevitably adds noise and distortion).

By and large I agree with Chuck -- rushing does lead to inaccuracy and I am
guilty of that at times.

Our TA openings can be, at best, pretty sketchy so I often release info and
beg for forgiveness afterward.

No need for sniping at each other however - we are part of a team, a family
more like - and respect should be #1.

Everyone is making a valuable contribution.

Re: [IRCA] West Coast TA reports

2016-09-23 Thread Chuck Hutton
Sure, I'll listen Paul. After all, I'm not much of a DXer lately as you
mention. And I should remember your leadership in that area.

I'll have to remember there is no need to fact check before posting inaccurate
information.

Also, in addition to going with what you know, when in a hurry it seems to be
OK to go with what you don't know.

Listen Chuck,

When you live up here and get some of these signals and want to let others
know ASAP one doesn't have time to fact check sometimes.

You go with what you know, especially when you have next to no (and often
NO!) internet connection like me when DXing.

You go based upon what you know.

Maybe you have the time or strong steady signals and can afford to be
perfect... But especially where I am, the very unique and rare signals can
be gone in minutes.

Colin is one of the more thorough, knowledgeable, accurate DXers I know.
Even though we get into our disagreements sometimes, he's a good guy.

What have YOU contributed to the DXing world lately, Chuck?

the 1st to see TA reception have to
act fast -- we are like the first responders.

Putting every signal under a magnifying glass is not always possible during
fleeting openings.

Here's the thing *Chuck* -

When there is an "opening" to TA land, it is likely very, very fleeting and
in the interest of getting the information out to the maximum number of
interested DX enthusiasts,
one reports what they have quickly - because there often isn't time.

When you are in the front line, that is the first few lucky folks to
receive these weak signals, we don't tend to pull out our magnifying
glasses, kick back in our easy chair,
light a pipe and pontificate on what or if a station might be. We act
quickly so others might benefit. We get on the phone (like in the olden
days) or on the e-mail to alert the enthusiasts.

My golden rule is: Observe. Report as soon as possible. And analyze the
data afterwards.

Doing something, like reporting reception is always better than reporting
nothing - report fast and someone else might get it and the benefit of
hearing it.

The bottom line: Involve as many DXers as possible. By spending too much
time obsessing over one channel when
an opening may be 5 minutes long does not serve the community.

My opinion of course.

But Romanian sounds even more like Italian, and Romania is a definite
possibility. It's there nightly in Newfoundland. In either case, many parallels

Try identifying a language when there is less than 10db signal to noise
ratio -

I have over 40 years experience as an SWL listening to every language group
- there is no linguistic confusion - this is a case of a modulation and
signal to noise deficiency.

Happy Friday everyone -- time to write up a report on this mornings fairly
energized TP opening.

Re: [IRCA] West Coast TA watch - SEPT 27 (UTC)

2015-09-27 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Many carriers up here Don. Spread across the band from 153 to the high 1400’s.
Several producing audio with 1413 being the best, with two men talking in what
sounded like Russian. Only snippets of audio from 189. 1215 produced very poor
audio at time, otherwise just a carrier. The remainder of the audio producers
were too low to get the language. All these were heard in the period from 0245
to 04:10 when they started to fade down.

Re: [IRCA] West Coast TA watch - SEPT 27 (UTC)

2015-09-26 Thread Don Moman VE6JY
Certainly more and better carriers than last night. Around ~0430 1215
1377 1422 are the best on average, some with audio or close to it... but
others pop up quite nicely at times. 189 has listenable audio.

Tonite the European DKaz is visibly better than either the Eu or NEu
beverages even on hets near the lower end (esp for Nick since he asked).
189 is much better on the Eu beverage.

Wondering out loud, but if one was to build a rosette of DKaz arrays -was
thinking 4 or 5 covering the major directions from here - with the
feedpoints in the center, would the interaction be significant? - anyone
with a guess or even better, first hand experience?

Funny, but no luck on 675 here due to splatter. It's there, but buried.
On the other hand 963 is in with decent audio. Surely can't describe as
armchair, though, that I'd reserve for crystal clear and strong reception.
Even my TPs are rarely like that! ..Walt (03:05 UTC)

[IRCA] West Coast TA 1008 audio

0255 utc--only have MW carriers on 621, 783, 1008 with audio on 1008 more or
less continuously from 0200, peaking at poor at 0234. Not quite good enough
to guess at a language. Maybe an east coaster can give an idea what's
normally heard here. WRTH says 600kW for Yemen, then 100kW Egypt. Since only
Algeria and Morocco heard on LWBC, would seem conditions are favoring that

[IRCA] west coast TA alert

2010-12-03 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
Low AK tonight is giving immediate results. Best TA LWBC reception in quite
awhile. Currently 153, 162, 171 best (Morocco), 177, 180 (first time I've
ever had audio on that for TA), 189, 198. A bunch of MW hets, with 1215
producing occasional traces of audio. All in the 0400-0430 utc timeframe.

Good luck!

Thanks to Steve for passing along the TA alert, as I confess to having
got out of the habit of checking..

Sure enough, TA audio on

693 - UK
1089 - just traces
1134 - Croatia, solid signal
1179 - Sweden
1206 - France, bits of audio now and again
1215 - UK
1269 - Germany
1422- Germany

Several other decent carriers too. In particular 639, 954, and 963 are
at the almost audio level.

Ahem, Iran on 1503, new country

This is really weak when it deigns to appear at all (1503 is a pretty quiet
channel here), but yes, similar sounding mx on the web stream, man started
talking in the murk, then 30 seconds later, he starts on the webstreamam I
pleased? You bet.

At 0108UT, it made a brief and better appearance with a few seconds of middle

Congrats Nick. As Bruce observed, 1503 often has a good carrier, but
never much audio.

At the moment VOA's Urdu service on 1539 has the best signal. It goes
off at 0200, though often has a minute or so of English news before
someone throws the switch.

Nicely put, Colin. It's been quite a dull evening, yet in the last few
minutes, 0505UTC following, I've heard 1215 at quite good level w/pop mx (it's
now pretty readable EE talk at 0525), and 855 RNE1 faded up to be ID'd from the
RNE1 webstream (30 second delay), and bits of audio on 675, 1269, 1323, 1377
