First of all, $1 Million dollars from who knows how many Muslims is
not that much money. In addition Sheila Jackson Lee is a stupid
congresswoman. I myself am from Houston and the most dangerous place
for her to be is in front of the camera. SHE IS A FRAUD AND NOTHING
BETTER THAN A SPOKESWOMAN for the illegal aliens. No $1 million
dollars is NOT a lot of money. A local church down the road from me
that has 3 campuses with 20,000 members raised $1,005,000. That's more
than how many of them???

RE: [IslamCity] Islamic State 73 Sects--clarification

2005-09-18 Thread M. Malhar
Concerning Hizb-ut-Tahreer

Author: Shaikh Muqbil bin Haadee al-Waadi'ee

Source:Tuhfat-ul-Mujeeb 'alaa As'ilat-il-Haadir wal-Ghareeb (pg.141 -143)
[1]

Question: There is a group amongst us (here in the UK) called
Hizb-ut-Tahreer. They call for the Islamic Khilaafah and they speak against
the scholars. How can they be refuted and what is the way towards achieving
the proper Islamic Khilaafah?

Answer: All praise be to Allaah and may the peace and blessings be on our
prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions. I testify that there is no
deity worthy of worship except Allaah - alone and with no partner. And I
testufy that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. To proceed:

With regard to the issue of partisanship, people are divided into two
parties: The party of Ar-Rahmaan (Allaah) and the party of ash-Shaytaan (the
Devil). So the party of ar-Rahmaan - it is not permissible for them to be
divided amongst themselves. Allaah, the Most High, says: Verily those who
divide their Religion and break up into sects, you have no concern with them
in the least. [Surah Al-An'aam:159 ]

And the Prophet (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: The Jews split up
into seventy-one or seventy-two sects. And the Christians split up into
seventy-one or seventy-two sects. And my ummah will split up into
seventy-three sects. This hadeeth was reported by Abu Dawood from the
narration of Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu 'anhu). Abu Dawood reported a similar
hadeeth from Mu'awiyah but in it there occurs: All of them (these sects)
will be in the Hellfire, except one sect. They asked: Who is it O
Messenger of Allaah? He (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: The
Jamaa'ah. Then he said: And there will indeed come a people of whom vain
desires will move them just as rabies moves around the one it affects.

And what the Prophet (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) warned us of has
already come to pass, for the desires have become many and the parties and
groups have multiplied. And Allaah, the Lord of Glory, says in His Noble
Book: And hold on tightly to the Rope of Allaah, all of you, and be not
divided. [Surah Aali 'Imraan:103 ]

The Prophet (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: You will indeed follow
the ways of those who came before you, step by step, even if they were to
enter the hole of a lizard you would enter into it (after them). We said:
O Messenger of Allaah, do you mean the Jews and the Christians? He
(sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: Who else? And the Prophet
(sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: The beleiver with respect to another
beleiver is like a building, each part supports the other.

As for these parties, then they chase each other away and they attack one
another In fact, if one were to say: These splitting into parties has
actualized what the enemies of Islaam have desired from splitting up the
ummah, dividing its ranks and weaking its strength he would be speaking
truthfully.

Therefore, (I say that) Hizb-ut-Tahreer is a hizb (party) that is wicked.
Perhaps you think this is a grave statement since I am the first one to say
such a thing, but it is proper that I introduce such a statement. So I say
again, it is indeed a wicked party, which began in Jordan. They split away
from the Ikhwaan al-Muslimoon, who wrote to them requesting them to return
but they refused to go back to them. Their leader was Taqee-ud-Deen
an-Nubahaanee. Concerning the matters related to Creed, they say: Nothing
should be accepted except for that which conforms to the intellect. So if
there is found some hearing (of a report), then this hearing must be
eliminated. That is why they reject the Punishment in the Grave and they
reject that the Dajjaal will be brought forth.

And they have no concern for teaching good etiquettes nor with spreading
knowledge. So it is a party that cultivates its followers upon seeking after
and studying politics, which opposes the Religion. And it was once said to
the leader of this group: Why don't we see any schools for the memorization
of the Qur'aan in your party? So he responded: I do not want to produce
dervishes!

They rely on politics only, and they do not rely on knowledge and
etiquettes, nor on the heart-softening narrations. And with regard to issues
of Fiqh, they make it permissible for a man to shake hands with a woman that
is not related to him. And they say that it is permissible for a woman to be
a leader and that she can sit in a governing council (majlis ash-shuraa). In
fact they even allow a disbeliever to be in the governing council and that
he can be given general leadership positions! So it is a deviant group that
has surpassed the extent of devance.

And I am surprised at those who join and adhere to this party. So I advise
every brother to stay far away from this group and to warn against it. And
if it were not that we make excuses for them, that they misinterpret the
texts, we would have said that they were disbelievers because they reject
the Punishment in the Grave and they reject

[IslamCity] Suwayd and the Roll of Prophet Luqman

2005-09-18 Thread brother_farrukh
Assalam alaikum,

Whenever men came together at the fairs, or the apostle heard of
anyone of importance coming to Mecca, he went to them with his message.

Al-Zafari, on the authority f some of his teachers, told me that
Suwayd ibn al-Samit the brother of Amr ibn Auf came to Mecca on
pilgrimage. Suwayd's tribesmen used to call him al-Kamil (perfect,
complete, genuine, learned) because of his toughness, poetry, honor
and lineage. One of Suwayd's poems reads:

There are man men whom you call friend about who you would be shocked
If you knew the lies he tells about you in secret
While he is with you his words are like honey
Behind your back a sword aimed at the base of your neck
What you see of him pleases you but underneath
He is a deceitful backbiter cutting through to the marrow
His eyes will show you what he is concealing
Rancor and hatred are in his evil look
Strengthen me with good deeds, long have you weakened me
The best friends strengthen without weakening

Once Suwayd had a dispute with a man of the tribe of Sulaym, a man
named Ibn Zibb ibn Malik, who owed him more than 100 camels. They
appointed an Arab woman to arbitrate and she gave judgment in Suwayd's
favor. They left the arbitrator and carried on their way. As they were
about to part company Suwayd asked for his due. The man promised to
send it but Suwayd wanted a guarantee that it would be sent. The man
couldn't offer any guarantee, they had a heated discussion which led
to a brawl. Suwayd knocked him down, tied him up and took him back
with him to his home town. The man stayed there until his tribesman
paid the money that was due to Suwayd. It was in reference to this
occasion that Suwayd said:

Don't think, Ibn Zibb ibn Malik, that I
Am like the man you deceitfully slew in secret
When I had been thrown I manfully became your match
Thus the resolute man can change his position
I locked him under my left arm
And his cheek remained in the dirt

When the Prophet heard about Suwayd, he sought him out and invited him
to Islam.

Suwayd said to the Prophet, `Perhaps you have something like that
which I have?'

`And what is that?' asked the Prophet.

`The roll of (Prophet Luqman)' (meaning the wisdom of Prophet Luqman)
he answered.

`Hand it to me' said the Prophet. `This discourse is fine, but that
which I have is better, the Quran which God has revealed to me which
is a guidance and a light'.

The Prophet then recited the Quran to him and invited him to Islam: he
did not withdraw form it but said, `This is a fine saying'. Then he
went off and rejoined his people in Medina and almost at once the
Khazraj killed him.

Some of his family used to say, `In our opinion he was a Muslim when
he was killed'

And Allah knows best.

[Ibn Ishaq, The Life of Muhammad, p 195-7]

May Allah Almighty have mercy, bless us all with the integrity of
goodness, and not let any of us die except in our highest state of
Islam, ameen.

[IslamCity] Chance encounter at Warsaw mosque

2005-09-18 Thread brother_farrukh
Assalam alaikum,

There is a famous saying of Prophet Muhammad in which he said that if
God will's that a person will die in a certain land, then God will
create a reason for that person to be there.

Those who read the account of my visit to Guangzhou mosque will
remember my Chinese-Polish-English translator Ewa. Fortunately for
myself, Ewa was in Warsaw at the same time as me so I made use of her
language skills as a guide for an afternoon to discovering Warsaw mosque.

The mosque is located along a main road in a suburb of Warsaw locked
behind a small Arabian styled gate. The building is of medium size
made in yellow bricks with two 'minarets' on top of the front
structure. Actually, it looks quite odd. the front with its minarets
looks as if they started to build a nice looking mosque, just bhind it
however is a house similar to others on the street. Yet if you take a
look from the rear, it is also built in a similar style to the front.

I'm not sure why it has ended up as it has, but like many mosuqes it
sounds as if they had a grand plan but simply ran out of money for
proper renovations, and Allah knows best.

Near the gate is a outdoor stairwell, the back door which became our
point of entry. Of course at other times its the 'women'sentrance' (am
I the only one who finds it depressing that the women'sentrances to
msoques always tend to be shabby, tacky, and demeaning?) The main door
around the side opened mostly on Friday when the congregation is much
larger.

Upon arrival we were greeted by a man of Asian heritage, Muhammad,
who, to my shock and surprise spoke with a London accent! He had
married a Polish woman some years ago and lives in Warsaw, yet visits
London almost every month. In an effort to guess his age – at his
request – I embarrassed myself, suffice to say that he is on the other
side of 65. Muhammad was kind enough to show us around and of course
was quite eager to teach Ewa as much about Islam as possible as we
walked through.

Stepping into the mosque there is an open lobby with stairs leading
upstairs to what turned out to be a prayer room for women, a classroom
as well as a number of other smaller rooms. Hearing a class reciting a
surah of the Quran, I knocked on the door, introduced myself and asked
if I could take a photo. The teacher - in shock I'm sure - declined my
request, though I could see a number of children, young as well as
teenagers sitting in class form dffering backgrounds including Polish.

Ewa later explained that aside from the odd nature of my request, the
perception of Islam in Poland wasn't that good with many trying to
shed Islam as a negative influence. With that backdrop the teacher
possibly thought that I was someone who had an unfriendly motive thus
declined. Dissapointed, I accepted and we continued our 'tour'.

Further up the flight of stairs, as we approached, a man looked at us
in a rather unwelcoming manner so we decided not to explore - whatever
happened to a smile being an act of charity?

Back down the stairs, the main hall, accessed from the entrance lobby
comprised of a reasonably large room in which two guys dressed in
white thobes and the type of beards most university aged students feel
proud of sat reading the Quran.

My second shock of the day came as it transpired that they were in
fact from Leicester (England) as they spoke with some rather strong
Leicestershire accents! They informed me that they were there for some
weeks for dawah which I thought was a nice thing to do, but given that
they didn't actually speak Polish, I wondered to the effectiveness of
such an effort. Either way - and despite my dislike of the Tablighi
types - may Allah reward all those who endeavor to do good, amen.

I always find visiting somewhere new a series of thoughts which run
through my mind. In this case it was the hadith mentioned at the
beginning of this e-mail. Whether it is myself, Ewa, Mohammad, these
two Leicestershire guys or anyone else, we can all find ourselves in
the oddest of places, without really knowing how or why we ended up
where we did. To me it is therefore true that if Allah wishes for
someone to go somewhere, Allah will create a reason for that person to
go there. Can we understand the reason why? Not always, but then, that
is why Allah is the Most Wise, and may Allah have mercy and keep us
all safe in our journeys of life, amen.

[IslamCity] Ontario Mulls Shari`ah for Muslims-opposition un- reasonable

2005-09-18 Thread sahannan

Dear members of the list,

Assalamu Alaikum. If the Canadian Muslims really
want to settle their family affairs according to Shariah rules, I do not find
any justication to its opposition by others. At the most, there can be a
provision that such Shariah Tribunals can rule only in case of those Muslims
where both parties to the dispute agree to adjudication by such
Tribunal.

Ontario Mulls Shari`ah for Muslims

A file photo of Canadian Muslims

TORONTO, September 9, 2005 (IslamOnline.net News Agencies) – The
Canadian province of Ontario is due to rule in the near future on the
possibility of using the Islamic Shari`ah in settling family disputes among
Canadian Muslims, according to provincial prime minister Dalton McGuinty,
provoking protests in a number of Canadian cities over the issue.
McGuinty has said the Liberal Government is reviewing a report by former
Ontario attorney Marion Boyd recommending to allow Ontario Muslims to establish
Shari`ah-based tribunals, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported Thursday,
September 8.
He added that the government will come forward with its own
recommendations "at some point in time".
McGuinty insisted that any such tribunals would have to conform to the
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms – the cornerstone of the country's 1982
constitution.
"Whatever the province does, it will be in keeping with the values of
Ontario and Canadians," he said.
If applied, Ontario would become the only Western jurisdiction to adopt a
form of Shari`ah arbitration.
Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, has allowed Catholic and
Jewish faith-based tribunals to settle family law matters on a voluntary basis
since 1991.
The practice drew little attention until Muslim leaders demanded the same
rights.
Protests
But the possibility of using Shari`ah in settling family disputes in the
province sparked small protests in a number of Canadian cities.
More than 300 demonstrators converged in front of the Ontario legislature
Thursday in a protest against the move, reported the Canadian television's
online (CTV).
"Shame! Shame!" chanted members of the crowd.
In Montreal, around 100 people gathered to protest the move, claiming
that the Shari`ah-based tribunals violate the women's rights and run against the
letter of the Canadian Charter, AFP said.
"From A to Z, the contents of these Islamic laws are against the charter
of rights," said Elahe Chokrai from the Montreal Association of Iranian
Women.
In Ottawa, more than 100 protestors, mostly women, also protested in the
rain in front of the parliament building.
"The marriage of children as young as nine, polygamy, the unjust division
of inheritance: all of these are part of Islamic law and we don't accept them as
being part of Canadian law," Chokrai said.
Discrimination

  The protestors claim that the
Shari`ah-based tribunals violate women's rights (CTV)

Muslim leaders and Canadian officials, however, rebuffed protestor
claims, saying that depriving Canadian Muslims from settling their family
affairs before Shari`ah-based tribunals will be a sort of discrimination among
the Canadian people.
Wahida Valiante said if Jews, Catholics and others can practice
faith-based arbitration to settle family disputes, so should Muslims, according
to CTV.
"You are creating two classes of citizens: one who have certain rights
and other who don't have certain rights."
Imam Mubin Shaik in Toronto also said the Islamic Shari`ah is in line
with Canadian law.
"I subscribe to Islam. I've taken Islam as my way of life," he
said.
"It doesn't mean it goes hand in hand with oppression with
women."
Boyd, who proposed establishing Shari`ah-based tribunals for the Ontario
Muslims, warned that if the proposal was rejected, Ontario would face the
specter of ending all religious arbitration.
He stressed that there was no evidence women were being discriminated
against in faith-based arbitration.
"The recommendations that I've made put a lot of safeguards in place,"
Boyd told CTV.
"I think they have to have the political courage to recognize they're not
going to satisfy everybody."

[IslamCity] Ruling on Praying after Ghusl without fresh Wadoo

2005-09-18 Thread Muhammad Salman Faheem

Bismillah hir Rehman nir Rahim

Ruling on Praying after Ghusl without fresh Wadoo

Question #68854: Is it Correct to pray without wadoo immedietly after coming from a normal bath.

Answer : Praise be to Allaah.

It is mustahabb for a Muslim to do wudoo’ before ghusl, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

If ghusl is done in cases of major impurity such as janaabah (impurity following sexual activity) and menstruation, and the person washes his entire body with water, as well as rinsing out the mouth and nose, then it is sufficient and there is no need to do wudoo’. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not do wudoo’ after doing ghusl.

You will find more details on this in the answer to question no. 5032

But if the “ghusl” is done to cool down or to clean oneself, then it does not take the place of wudoo’.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Does ghusl following janaabah take the place of wudoo’?

He replied:
If a person is in a state of janaabah and he does ghusl, then that is sufficient and he does not need to do wudoo’, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“If you are in a state of Janaaba (i.e. after a sexual discharge), purify yourselves (bathe your whole body)” [al-Maa’idah 5:6]

There is no need to repeat wudoo’ after doing ghusl. But if one of the things that break wudoo’ takes place, and he breaks his wudoo’ after doing ghusl, then he must do wudoo’ But if he does not break his wudoo’ then his doing ghusl from janaabah takes the place of wudoo’, whether he did wudoo’ before doing ghusl or not. But it is essential to pay attention to rinsing the mouth and nose, because doing so is essential in both wudoo’ and ghusl. End quote.

Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 11/question no. 180.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was also asked: Does ghusl that is not prescribed or required according to sharee’ah take the place of wudoo’?

He replied:

Ghusl that is not prescribed or required according to sharee’ah does not take the place of wudoo’, because it is not an act of worship. End quote.

Majmoo’ Fataawa al_Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 11/question no. 181.

He (may Allaah have mercy on him) was also asked: Does taking a bath take the place of wudoo’?

He replied:
If a person takes a bath because of janaabah, then it takes the place of wudoo’, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“If you are in a state of Janaaba (i.e. after a sexual discharge), purify yourselves (bathe your whole body)” [al-Maa’idah 5:6]

If a person is junub and he immerses himself in a bathtub or river or the like, intending thereby to cleanse himself of janaabah, and he rinses his mouth and nose, then he purifies himself from both minor and major impurity, because Allaah, may He be exalted, only enjoined us to purify ourselves from janaabah, i.e., we should ensure that water reaches all parts of the body when doing ghusl.

But it is better for the person who is doing ghusl to do wudoo’ first, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to wash his private parts after washing his hands, then he would do wudoo’ as for prayer, then he would pour water over his head, and when he thought that it had reached the skin, he poured water over his head three times, then he would wash the rest of his body.

But if a person takes a bath to clean himself or to cool himself down, then this does not take the place of wudoo’, because that is not an act of worship, rather it is just an ordinary action, although Islam prescribes cleanliness.

Whatever the case, if the bath is taken to cool down or get clean, then it does not take the place of wudoo’. End quote.

Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 11/question no. 182

And Allaah knows the best.

[IslamCity] NOBLE CHAMBERLAIN FROM SUPREME MAJESTY

2005-09-18 Thread Soul Power

NOBLE CHAMBERLAIN FROM SUPREME MAJESTY

A long time passed. When, at a propitious moment, the door suddenly opened, there stepped out a noble chamberlain, one of the courtiers of the Supreme Majesty. He looked them over and saw that out of thousands only these thirty birds were left.

He said: ‘Now then, O Birds, where have you come from, and what are you doing here? What are your names? What do they call you in the world? What can be done with a feeble handful of dust like you?

We have come, they said, ‘ to acknowledge the Simurgh as our king. Through love and desire for him we have lost our reason and our peace of mind. Very long ago, when we started on this journey, we were thousands, and now only thirty of us have arrived at this sublime court. We cannot we cannot believe that the king will scorn us after all the sufferings we have gone through. Ah, no? He cannot but look on us with the eye of benevolence.

The Chamberlain replied: ‘O you whose minds and hearts are troubled, whether you exist or do not exist in the universe; the King has his being always and eternally. Thousands of worlds of creatures are no more than an ant at his gate. You bring nothing but moans and lamentations. Return then to whence you come, O vile handful of earth? At this, the birds were petrified with astonishment. Nevertheless, when they came to themselves a little, they said: ‘Will this great king rejects us so ignominiously? And if he really has this attitude to us many he not changes it to one of honour?

Remember Majnun who said, “If all the people who dwell on earth wished to sing my praises, I would not accept them; I would rather have the insults of Laila. One of her insults is more to me than a hundred compliments from another woman!

The lightning of his glory manifests itself, said the Chamberlain, and it lifts up the reason of all souls. What benefits is there if the sound be consumed by a hundred sorrows? What benefit is there at this moment in either greatness or littleness?

 U.S. the new Saddam

 By Eric Margolis

09/05/05 Toronto Sun -- -- The most important news
from Iraq last week was not the much ballyhooed
constitutional pact by Shias and Kurds, nor the
 tragic
stampede deaths of nearly 1,000 pilgrims in Baghdad.

The U.S. Air Force's senior officer, Gen. John
 Jumper,
stated U.S. warplanes would remain in Iraq to fight
resistance forces and protect the American-installed
regime more or less indefinitely. Jumper's
 bombshell
went largely unnoticed due to Hurricane Katrina.

Gen. Jumper let the cat out of the bag. While
President George Bush hints at eventual troop
withdrawals, the Pentagon is busy building four
 major,
permanent air bases in Iraq that will require heavy
 infantry protection.

Jumper's revelation confirms what this column has
 long
said: The Pentagon plans to copy Imperial Britain's
method of ruling oil-rich Iraq. In the 1920s, the
British cobbled together Iraq from three disparate
Ottoman provinces to control newly-found oil fields
 in
Kurdistan and along the Iranian border.

London installed a puppet king and built an army of
sepoy (native) troops to keep order and put down
 minor
 uprisings. Government minister Winston Churchill
authorized use of poisonous mustard gas against
Kurdish tribesmen in Iraq and Pushtuns in
 Afghanistan
(today's Taliban). The RAF crushed all revolts.

It seems this is what Jumper has in mind. Mobile
 U.S.
ground intervention forces will remain at the four
major Fort Apache bases guarding Iraq's major oil
fields. These bases will be ceded to the U.S. by a
compliant Iraqi regime. The U.S. Air Force will
 police
the Pax Americana with its precision-guided
 munitions
 and armed drones.

The USAF has developed an extremely effective new
technique of wide area control. Small numbers of
strike aircraft are kept in the air around the
 clock.
When U.S. ground forces come under attack or foes
 are
 sighted, these aircraft deliver precision-guided
bombs. This tactic has led Iraqi resistance fighters
to favour roadside bombs over ambushes against U.S.
 convoys.

The USAF uses the same combat air patrol tactic in
Afghanistan, with even more success. The U.S. is
 also
developing three major air bases in Pakistan, and
others across Central Asia, to support its plans to
dominate the region's oil and gas reserves.

While the USAF is settling into West Asia, the mess
 in
Iraq continues to worsen. Last week's so-called
 constitutional deal was the long-predicted,
U.S.-crafted pact between Shias and Kurds,
 essentially
giving them Iraq's oil and virtual independence. The
proposed constitution assures American big business
access to Iraq's oil riches and markets.

The furious but powerless Sunnis were left in the
lurch. Sunnis will at least have the chance to vote
 on
it in a Oct. 15 referendum, but many fear it will be
 rigged.

The U.S. reportedly offered the 15 Sunni delegates
 $5
million each to vote for the constitution -- but was
turned down. No mention was made that a U.S.-guided
constitution for Iraq would violate the Geneva
 Conventions.

Chinese Taoists say you become what you hate. In a
zesty irony, the U.S. now finds itself in a similar
position as demonized Saddam Hussein. Saddam had to
use his Sunni-dominated army to hold Iraq together
 by
fighting Kurdish and Shia rebels. His brutal police
jailed tens of thousands and routinely used torture.

Today, Iraq's new ruler, the U.S., is battling Sunni
insurgents, (al-Qaida terrorists, in the latest
 Pentagon doublespeak), rebuilding Saddam's dreaded
secret police, holding 15,000 prisoners and
 torturing
captives, as the Abu Ghraib outrage showed.

Much of the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama
National Guard were in Iraq last week week instead
 of
at home. Meanwhile, the Kurds are de facto
independent, the Shia are playing footsie with Iran,
and large parts of Iraq resemble the storm-ravaged
U.S. Gulf Coast -- or vice versa.

[IslamCity] DAJJAL BUSH SUFFERING FROM SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS

2005-09-18 Thread assalamu_alaikum_1426
Now They Tell Us
By Dan Froomkin

Monday, September 12, 2005
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/blog/2005/09/12/BL2005091200806_pf.html

Amid a slew of stories this weekend about the embattled presidency and
the blundering government response to the drowning of New Orleans,
some journalists who are long-time observers of the White House are
suddenly sharing scathing observations about President Bush that may
be new to many of their readers.

Is Bush the commanding, decisive, jovial president you've been hearing
about for years in so much of the mainstream press?

Maybe not so much.

Judging from the blistering analyses in Time, Newsweek, and elsewhere
these past few days, it turns out that Bush is in fact fidgety, cold
and snappish in private. He yells at those who dare give him bad news
and is therefore not surprisingly surrounded by an echo chamber of
terrified sycophants. He is slow to comprehend concepts that don't
emerge from his gut. He is uncomprehending of the speeches that he is
given to read. And oh yes, one of his most significant legacies -- the
immense post-Sept. 11 reorganization of the federal government which
created the Homeland Security Department -- has failed a big test.

Maybe it's Bush's sinking poll numbers -- he is, after all, undeniably
an unpopular president now. Maybe it's the way that the federal
response to the flood has cut so deeply against Bush's most compelling
claim to greatness: His resoluteness when it comes to protecting
Americans.

But for whatever reason, critical observations and insights that for
so long have been zealously guarded by mainstream journalists, and
only doled out in teaspoons if at all, now seem to be flooding into
the public sphere.

An emperor-has-no-clothes moment seems upon us.

Read All About It

The two seminal reads are from Newsweek and Time.

Evan Thomas's [http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9287434/site/newsweek/ ]
story in Newsweek is headlined: How Bush Blew It.

It's a standing joke among the president's top aides: who gets to
deliver the bad news? Warm and hearty in public, Bush can be cold and
snappish in private, and aides sometimes cringe before the displeasure
of the president of the United States, Thomas writes.

In this sort of environment, Bush apparently didn't fathom the extent
of the catastrophe in the Gulf Coast for more than three days after
the levees of New Orleans were breached.

The reality, say several aides who did not wish to be quoted because
it might displease the president, did not really sink in until
Thursday night. Some White House staffers were watching the evening
news and thought the president needed to see the horrific reports
coming out of New Orleans. Counselor Bartlett made up a DVD of the
newscasts so Bush could see them in their entirety as he flew down to
the Gulf Coast the next morning on Air Force One.

How this could be -- how the president of the United States could
have even less 'situational awareness,' as they say in the military,
than the average American about the worst natural disaster in a
century -- is one of the more perplexing and troubling chapters in a
story that, despite moments of heroism and acts of great generosity,
ranks as a national disgrace.

Among Thomas's disclosures: Bush can be petulant about dissent; he
equates disagreement with disloyalty. After five years in office, he
is surrounded largely by people who agree with him. . . .

Late last week, Bush was, by some accounts, down and angry. But
another Bush aide described the atmosphere inside the White House as
'strangely surreal and almost detached.' At one meeting described by
this insider, officials were oddly self-congratulatory, perhaps in an
effort to buck each other up. Life inside a bunker can be strange,
especially in defeat.

Mike Allen [
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/printout/0,8816,1103581,00.html ]
writes in Time: Longtime Bush watchers say they are not shocked that
he missed his moment -- one of his most trusted confidants calls him
'a better third- and fourth-quarter player,' who focuses and delivers
when he sees the stakes. What surprised them was that he still
appeared to be stutter-stepping in the second week of the crisis,
struggling to make up for past lapses instead of taking control with a
grand gesture. Just as Katrina exposed the lurking problems of race
and poverty, it also revealed the limitations of Bush's rigid,
top-down approach to the presidency. . . .

Bush's bubble has grown more hermetic in the second term, they say,
with fewer people willing or able to bring him bad news -- or tell him
when he's wrong. Bush has never been adroit about this. A youngish
aide who is a Bush favorite described the perils of correcting the
boss. 'The first time I told him he was wrong, he started yelling at
me,' the aide recalled about a session during the first term. 'Then I
showed him where he was wrong, and he said, All right. I understand.
Good job. He

[IslamCity] The Wisdom of Hazrat Ali a.s.

2005-09-18 Thread Karim A G

The Wisdom
of Hazrat Ali a.s.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and the fourth
Caliph of Islam, was a very wise man. It is said that two gentlemen were travelling
together. They carried their lunch with them. One of them had five loaves and
the other had three. After some time they felt hungry and sat down to eat.
Another man passed by. He too was hungry, but he had no food. They asked him to
join them. They shared their loaves and ate their meal. Afterwards, the stranger
gave them eight pieces of money to pay for his share of the food and thanking
them, he departed.

The
man who had five loaves took five pieces of money and gave the other three
pieces to his friend. But the friend thought that he should have half the
money. They began to argue. At last, they decided to let the Caliph settle the
case.

When
they had told the Caliph the whole story, he said, Let the owner of the
five loaves take seven pieces of money and the owner of the three loaves take
one piece.

The
simple men could not understand this judgement. They were told to think about
how much each man had eaten and how much each had given to the stranger.
Dividing each of the eight loaves into three shares gave twenty-four portions.
As they all had eaten the same amount, they all had eight portions. It was
obvious, therefore, that the man with three loaves had only one portion to give
to the stranger, and the man with five loaves had seven portions left to give
to their guest.

RE: [IslamCity] Hamza Yusuf the divent lair.

2005-09-18 Thread Abu muslim al amreeki

by Michael Enright on the September 11 Tragedy Aired on September 23, 2001Extract from the interview

Michael: Well we know now it was more plunder than religion.
Shaykh Hamza: Well, that's true. And unfortunately a lot of religious wars tend to be for other than religion. But the word jihad is probably one of the highest concepts that the Arabs and the Muslims have. It represents really the best of humankind. In the Qur'an it is never once used to express a military meaning. Not once.
Comment: This is not true. Open any Quran commentary book and find for yourself. (See for example: surah 4 verse 95, surah 9 verse 41, and surah 61 verses 10-13)
Interestingly, even Hamzah Yusuf himself knows that this statement is not entirely accurate. In his tape “The Life of The Prophet Muhammad,” tape number 9 Hamzah Yusuf - talking about the prophet SAAWS and his companions in Madinah- said:
“They are in a state of perpetual vigilance and war. This is jihad, his life is really a life of jihad, of struggle against the people who were bent on not seeing Islam spread which is important to us to take as a lesson if we really want to spread Islam”
**
Michael: It means… does it not mean to go to war with yourself?
Shaykh Hamza: Well, that's one of the meanings. It literally means – if you look at the word, the root word is "jihad" which means to struggle, and juhd in the Arabic language means a struggle literally. So jihad is the act of struggling. And the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, said that the greatest jihad is to struggle with your own soul's insidious suggestions.
Comment: The root word of Jihad is actually “jahada.” It means 'fighting the enemies or doing ones utmost in fighting' (see lisaan Al-Arab by Ibn Mandhoor, Vol. 2 page 396. First edition, published by Dar Ihya at-Turath al-Arabi, Beirut 1988).
The hadith mentioned at the end is a weak hadeeth (See the book of weak hadiths by Imam al-Albani, and the book of weak and fabricated Hadiths for Imam al-Shawkani). Sufis in general always quote this Hadith because it relieves them from waging the true Jihad.
**
Shaykh Hamza (continues): And I think that really clarifies to the Muslims. Building a hospital in the Arab world – and I've lived in the Arab world, I speak Arabic very well – building a hospital, the Arabs will literally say what a great jihad that was when it was completed.
Comment: This is not an accurate statement. Arabic is my native tongue and I have studied it – at least one session every day - for 22 years. That phrase would never be used to describe such an effort. Instead, the Arab might say: what a great juhd which means “effort”.
However the Shari' (legal) meaning of the term ‘Jihad,' is “ The war Muslims wage to make the word of Allah superior against kuffar (disbelievers) who do not have a covenant with Muslims after being invited to Islam and rejecting the invitation. Reference: The Fiqh encyclopedia by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Kuwait”

Shaykh Hamza (continues): The idea of spending money for anything good… those firefighters who were pulling people out of the World Trade Towers, they would be considered, that's an act of jihad. They would be considered mujahideen if they were described in Arabic. And I'm not exaggerating at all. That really is at the essence of this word.
Comment: Again, this is not accurate. In Islamic literature, when the word “mujahideen” is used without any qualification, it means one and only one thing: those who fight in the battlefield for the sake of Allah. Please refer to the Quran (See for example the commentary on surah 4 verse 95) and search for the word Jihad and Mujahideen to gain a better understanding of how they are used.
The following hadith in Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 4 Book 52, No. 44 shows how the prophet SAAWS understood the word “jihad” and “mujahid” (singular of mujahideen,” please compare this hadith to what Hamzah Yusuf said:
Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA): A man came to Allah's Apostle and said, "Instruct me as to such a deed that equals Jihad (in reward)." He replied, "I do not find such a deed." Then he added, "Can you, while the Muslim fighter is in the battle-field, enter your mosque to perform prayers without cease and fast and never break your fast?" The man said, "But who can do that?" Abu- Huraira added, "The Mujahid (i.e. Muslim fighter) is rewarded even for the footsteps of his horse while it wanders about (for grazing) tied by a long rope."
However, if one does use the terms 'Jihad' or 'Mujahid' in a context other than their literal meaning, one must supplement these words with specific references that modify its literal meaning. These two words may be qualified to mean other types of jihad e.g. you may say jihad against the devil which means being vigilant towards the devil's tricks. Therefore, each time the word jihad is used without any

'Homeland Security' Chief delayed federal Katrina response, memo showsBy Jonathan S. Landay, Alison Young and Shannon McCaffreyKnight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - The federal official with the power to mobilize a massive federal response to Hurricane Katrina was Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, not the former FEMA chief who was relieved of his duties and resigned earlier this week, federal documents reviewed by Knight Ridder show.

Even before the storm struck the Gulf Coast, Chertoff could have ordered federal agencies into action without any request from state or local officials. Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown had only limited authority to do so until about 36 hours after the storm hit, when Chertoff designated him as the "principal federal official" in charge of the storm.

As thousands of hurricane victims went without food, water and shelter in the days after Katrina's early morning Aug. 29 landfall, critics assailed Brown for being responsible for delays that might have cost hundreds of lives.

But Chertoff - not Brown - was in charge of managing the national response to a catastrophic disaster, according to the National Response Plan, the federal government's blueprint for how agencies will handle major natural disasters or terrorist incidents. An order issued by President Bush in 2003 also assigned that responsibility to the homeland security director.

But according to a memo obtained by Knight Ridder, Chertoff didn't shift that power to Brown until late afternoon or evening on Aug. 30, about 36 hours after Katrina hit Louisiana and Mississippi. That same memo suggests that Chertoff may have been confused about his lead role in disaster response and that of his department.

Ayat al-Kursi is verse 255 of the second chapter (Surah) of the Holy Quran, Surat al-Baqarah (The Chapter of the Cow)
Below is the arabic text, followed by the transliteration in latin characters, followed by the English translation and then some of the benefits of reciting this verse, the Verse of the Throne.
Bismillaah ar-Rahman ar-RaheemAllahu la illaha illa huWal Hayyul QayyumLa te huzuhu sinetun wala nawmunLahu ma fissemawati wa ma fil'ardiMen thallathiy yeshfe'u indehu illa biznihYa'lemu ma beyne eydiyhimwa ma halfehumwa la yuhiytunebishey'in min ilmihiilla bima sha-a wasia kursiyyuhu semavati wal'ardWa la yeuduhu hifzuhuma wa hu wal aliy ul aziym
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.Allah! There is no God but He,the Living, the Self-subsisting, the Eternal. No slumber can seize Him, nor sleep. All things in heaven and earth are His.Who could intercede in His presence without His permission? He knows what appears in front of and behind His creatures.Nor can they encompass any knowledge of Him except what he wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them, for He is the Highest and Most Exalted.

1. Our Holy prophet (SAWW) has said: whoever recites the first 4 ayats of Surae Baqarah, then Ayatul Kursi and then the last 3 ayats of Surae Baqarah will not be inflicted with any kind of difficulty in his wealth or himself, Shaitaan will not come near him and he will not forget the Qur'an.
2. Imam Ali (AS) was told by our Holy Prophet:? Qur'an is a great word, and Surae Baqarah is the leader of the Qur'an and Ayatul Kursi is the leader of Surae Baqarah.? In Ayatul Kursi there are 50 words and for each word there are 50 blessings and good in it.
3. One who recites Ayatul Kursi every morning will be in the protection, safety of Allah until the night.
4. If one ties this to ones wealth or chidren, they will be safe from Shaitaan.
5. Our Holy Prophet (SAWW) has said:? These things increase ones memory; sweets, meat of an animal near the neck, Adas(Lentils), cold bread and recitation of Ayatul Kursi.
6. For those of our dear ones who have passed away, recitation of Ayatul Kursi and giving it as Hadiya to them, gives them light (noor) in the grave.
7. Frequent recitation makes ones own death easy.
8. When leaving home, if one recites it once, the Almighty has one group of Angels to come and protect you.? If recited twice, 2 groups of Angels are assigned to do this.? If recited 3 times Allah tells the Angels not to worry as the Almighty himself takes care of him.
9. The Holy Prophet has said: If one recites Ayatul Kursi before going to sleep, Allah will send an Angel to come and look after you and protect you till the morning.? His home, family and also neighbours will remain in safety until morning.
10. When one is alone in the home, recitation of Ayatul Kursi and asking Allah to help will make you remain calm and you will not fear.
11. The Holy Prophet has said: When leaving home,if one recites Ayatul Kursi the Allah will send 70,000 Angels to do Istighfaar for him until he returns home, and upon his return Poverty will be removed from him.
12. If one recites this after doing Wudhoo, the 5th Imam (AS) has said: Allah will give him a reward of 40 years of Ibadaat, his position will be raised in the Heavens 40 times (levels) and will marry him to 40 Horains.
13. One who recites it after every prayer, thier salaat will be accepted, they will remain in the safety of the Almighty and He will protect them.
14. Allah (SWT) told P.Musa (AS): If one recites it after every salaat, the Almighty will make his heart a thankful one(Shakireen), will give him a reward of the prophets, and his deeds will be like those of the truthful(Siddiqeen) and nothing except death will stop will stop him from going into heaven.
15. To increase light or vision (noor) in the eyes, recite Surae Alhamd once, then Ayatul Kursi and then once the following dua:-? "U-eedhu nora basaree binuril lahi alladhi la yutfaa",? "I seek refuge for the light of my eyes by the light of Allah(SWT), which does not become extinguished".
All praises and thanks be to Allah, Lord of everything that exists. The most Gracious, the Most Merciful.Master of the Day of Judgment You (alone) we worship,Guide us to the Straight Way The Way of of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor those who went astray. [IslamCity] To Kill a Mocking Tongue

To Kill a Mocking Tongue
By Shaykh Muhammad AlShareef
Al-Ma'roor ibn Suwayd narrates that he once saw Abu Dharr – radi Allaahu ‘anhu – wearing a beautiful shawl. His slave standing next to him was wearing a shawl exactly like it, warm and beautiful.
Ma'roor said to Abu Dharr, “Perhaps you could take the shawl of your servant and give him another (less expensive) one.”
“Never,” said Abu Dharr, “for I once had a servant whose mother was not Arab and I cussed him and his mother. That servant went to the Messenger of Allah – sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam – complaining of the words I had said.
“When Rasul Allaah – sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam – saw me he commented, ‘O Abu Dharr, you are a man who still has Jahilliyyah (Pre-Islamic Ignorance) in him.'”
Because of these painful words, Abu Dharr – may Allah be pleased with him - would always dress his servants in the exact same garments that he would wear.
Dear brothers and sisters, Allah is disobeyed most with our tongues. There is a sin that sweeps amongst us, a sin that many take lightly, a sin that is laughed at, a sin that could very well pull someone to Hellfire: It is the sin of insulting others.
Read carefully this following verse. It is a commandment of Allah that begins with a call to those who claim to have Eemaan. Allah ta'ala says in the Qur'an (49/11):
O you who believe let not one group of people make fun of another, perhaps the (one's being made fun of) are better then them. And let not women make fun of other women perhaps the (woman being made fun of) is better then them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by (offensive) nicknames. Wretched is the name (i.e. mention) of disobedience after (one's) faith. And whoever does not repent – then it is those who are the Dhaalimoon (the wrongdoers).
Perhaps the one that is being made fun of is more beloved to Allah. Subhaan Allah, let us remember this if we ever try to make fun of someone, perhaps Allah loves them and does not love us. Didn't the Mushrikeen make fun of Rasul Allah – sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam – and we know Allah loved him and not them. Didn't the Munaafiqeen make fun of the Sahaabah – and we know Allah loved the Sahaabah and not them.
Rasul Allah – sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam – said, “Verily a person will speak words from those that Allah hates, paying no heed to what he is saying, and with those words he will plummet in to hellfire.” – Bukhari
There are different reasons why a person would want to insult, make fun of and ridicule other community members:
Firstly: They have weak Eemaan and their fear of Allah is poor. This is one of the major reasons.
Secondly: They spend a lot of their time in gatherings that bring no benefit.
Thirdly: They themselves may want others to praise them. Sadly, when there is a student or a community member that insults others, often it is they that want to be the ‘cool' one. How can they be ‘cool' if they are doing something that Allah and His Messenger hate?
Fourthly: They forget the punishment for those that make fun of others. Imam Al-Bayhaqee narrates in Shu'ab al-Eemaan, that Rasul Allah – sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam – said, “Verily those people that make fun of people – for them a gate of Jannah will be opened. It will be said to them: Come (and enter). That person will come with all their anguish and depression – but when he gets close, the gate will be closed in his face. Then another gate (to Jannah) will be opened and it will be said: Come (and enter). So that person comes with all his anguish and depression. But when he gets close, the gate will be closed in his face. This will keep happening to him until it gets to the point where it will be said: Come (and enter), and he will not come from the despair of ever entering paradise.”
Fifthly: Those that make fun of others may do so out of love for the Kuffaar and a love to imitate them. How many times do we see the comedians mocking people and everyone laughing? Indeed, mocking others and insulting them is a characteristic of Jaahiliyyah and kufr, and it is never a characteristic of a believer.
Allah ta'ala shows us in Surah Al-Mutaffifeen (83/29) how this characteristic of laughing at others is a characteristic of the Kuffaar:
Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
The seriousness of this sin varies in accordance to the subject being insulted:
On the highest level of seriousness is to make fun of Allah or His Ayaat or His Messenger – sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam.
A group of Munaafiqeen started joking one day about their Qurr'aa, i.e. the Companions of Allah's Messenger. They described in ridiculing terms that they were large in stomachs, having lying tongues and being cowardly. Allah ta'ala tells us in the Qur'an (9/65-66): And if you ask them, they will surely say, “We were only conversing and playing.” Say, “Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?” / Make no excuse; you have disbelieved

[IslamCity] SHAN E HAZRAT ABU HURAIRAH R.A.

2005-09-18 Thread Saba Khan
ABU HURAIRAH

An Abi Hurairah, Radiyallaahu'anhu, qal.' qala rasul
Allahi, sallallahu alayhi wa sailam...

Through this phrase millions of Muslims from the early
history of Islam to the present have come to be
familiar with the name Abu Hurairah. In speeches and
lectures, in Friday khutbahs and seminars, in the
books of Ahaadeeth and sirah, fiqh and ibadah, the
name Abu Hurairah is mentioned in this fashion:

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said: The
Messenger of God, , said... .

Through his Prodigious efforts, hundreds of ahadith or
sayings of the Prophet were transmitted to later
generations. His is the foremost name in the roll of
hadith transmitters. Next to him comes the names of
such companions as Abdullah the son of Umar, Anas the
son of Malik, Umm al-Mumininin Aishah, Jabir ibn
Abdullah and Abu Said al-Khudri all of whom
transmitted over a thousand sayings of the Prophet.

Abu Hurayrah became a Muslim at the hands of at-Tufayl
ibn Amr the chieftain of the Daws tribe to which he
belonged. The Daws lived in the region of Tihamah
which stretches along the coast of the Red Sea in
southern Arabia. When at-Tufayl returned to his
village after meeting the Prophet and becoming a
Muslim in the early years of his mission, Abu Hurayrah
was one of the first to respond to his call. He was
unlike the majority of the Daws who remained stubborn
in their old beliefs for a long time.

When at-Tufayl visited Makkah again, Abu Hurayrah
accompanied him. There he had the honor and privilege
of meeting the noble Prophet who asked him: What is
your name?

Abdu Shams - Servant of a Sun, he replied.

Instead, let it be Abdur-Rahman - the Servant of the
Beneficent Lord, said the Prophet .

Yes, Abdur-Rahman (it shall be) O Messenger of God,
he replied. However, he continued to be known as Abu
Hurayrah, the kitten man, literally the father of a
kitten because like the Prophet he was fond of cats
and since his childhood often had a cat to play with.

Abu Hurairah stayed in Tihamah for several years and
it was only at the beginning of the seventh year of
the Hijrah that he arrived in Madinah with others of
his tribe. The Prophet had gone on a campaign to
Khaybar. Being destitute, Abu Hurayrah took up h is
place in the Masjid with other of the Ahl as-Suffah.
He was single, without wife or child. With him however
was his mother who was still a mushrik. He longed, and
prayed, for her to become a Muslim but she adamantly
refused. One day, he invited her to have faith in God
alone and follow His Prophet but she uttered some
words about the Prophet which saddened him greatly.
With tears in his eyes, he went to the noble Prophet
who said to him:

What makes you cry, O Abu Hurairah?

I have not let up in inviting my mother to Islam but
she has always rebuffed me. Today, I invited her again
and I heard words from her which I do not like. Do
make supplication to God Almighty to make the heart of
Abu Hurairah's mother incline to Islam.

The Prophet responded to Abu Hurairah's request and
prayed for his mother. Abu Hurairah said: I went
home and found the door closed. I heard the splashing
of water and when I tried to enter my mother said:
Stay where you are, O Abu Hurairah. And after
putting on her clothes, she said, Enter! I entered
and she said: I testify that there is no god but
Allah and I testify that Muhammad is His Servant and
His Messenger.

I returned to the Prophet, peace be on him, weeping
with joy just as an hour before I had gone weeping
from sadness and said: I have good news, O Messenger
of Allah. God has responded to your prayer and guided
the mother of Abu Hurairah to Islam.

Abu Hurairah loved the Prophet a great deal and found
favor with him. He was never tired of looking at the
Prophet whose face appeared to him as having all the
radiance of the sun and he was never tired of
listening to him. Often he would praise God for h is
good fortune and say: Praise be to God Who has guided
Abu Hurairah to Islam. Praise be to God Who has
taught Abu Hurairah the Qur'ân.

Praise be to God who has bestowed on Abu Hurairah
the companionship of Muhammad, . On reaching
Madeenah, Abu Hurairah set his heart on attaining
knowledge. Zayd ibn Thabit the notable companion of
the Prophet reported : While Abu Hurairah and I and
another friend of mine were in the Masjid praying to
God Almighty and performing dhikr to Him, the
Messenger of God appeared. He came towards us and sat
among us. We became silent and he said: Carry on with
what you were doing.

So my friend and I made a supplication to God before
Abu Hurairah did and the Prophet began to say Ameen
to our dua.

Then Abu Hurairah made a supplication saying: O
Lord, I ask You for what my two companions have asked
and I ask You for knowledge which will not be
forgotten.

The Prophet, peace be on him, said: 'Ameen.' We then
said: 'And we ask Allah for knowledge which will not
be forgotten, and the Prophet replied: 'The Dawsi
youth has asked for

Saudis divided over kids viewing public executions

Tuesday, September 13, 2005 | World

Sentences handed down by Sharia (Islamic law) courts are carried out in full view of the public, the idea being that they act as a deterrent

Agencies

Cairo: Saudi Arabian educators and religious scholars are largely opposed to allowing children watch executions although a minority view supports the practice, according to a report Monday by the Saudi Gazette.“I am of the view that children must be forbidden from watching the execution of Sharia penalties in the same way that some countries prevent children from watching films with horrifying scenes,” said Abdul Aziz Bin Abdullah al-Dakheel, professor of social services at King Saud University.Sentences handed down by Sharia (Islamic law) courts including beheading, stoning to death, amputation and lashing are carried out in full view of the public, the idea being that they act as a deterrent.Experts who spoke to the Saudi daily Okaz, from which the Gazette took its report, generally concurred with al-Dakheel. However, Eid Bin Abdullah al-Shammari, a former member of the Shoura Council (a consultative body for
legislation) took the opposite view.“Deterrence is not only for adults, but also for children,” al-Shammari said. “Witnessing (such) scenes would help curb the violent tendencies in many students who attack their teachers and smash their cars,” he added saying such acts were a recent phenomenon. The report quoted three experts who were against allowing children to view the penalties and one for the practice, but did not say how many experts Okaz had interviewed on the topic.* “children must be forbidden from watching the execution of Sharia penalties in the same way that some countries prevent children from watching films with horrifying scenes”
