[IslamCity] Way to The Qur'an - An Excellent Book

2005-10-13 Thread Asifa AM

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
He has sent down upon you the Book with the Truth ... as a guidance unto mankind...' (Al 'Imran 3:3).

Way to The Qur'an (In Text Format)
Way to The Qur'an (In PDF Format)

Khurram J Murad

The masterpiece work of Khurram J Murad. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the Holy Qur'an, has changed lives for the better. Find out why!

Some of the excerpts from his book:

The Qur'an is the word of the Ever-living God; it has been sent down to guide man for all times to come. No book can be like it. As you come to the Qur'an, Allah speaks to you. To read the Qur'an is to hear Him, even to converse with Him, and to walk in His ways...

As you come to the Qur'an, you come to a new world. No other venture in your life can be so momentous and crucial, so blissful and rewarding, as your journey to and through the Qur'an

It is a journey that will take you through the endless joys and riches of the words that your Creator and Lord has sent to you and all mankind. Here you will find a world of untold treasures of knowledge and wisdom to guide you on the pathways of life, to mould your thoughts and actions...

And seek it with your heart, with your words, with your deeds. In traversing your path through the Qur'an you must depend utterly and exclusively upon Him. Not only should you be overwhelmed with this sense of dependence, you must express it

You cannot gather the full and real blessings and treasures of the Qur'an unless you devote yourself to understanding its meaning, unless you know what your Creator is saying to you

Qur'an, as you already know, does not require a blind faith, nor does it ask you to read it with ears closed, eyes shut, and minds locked. Invitation to think is one of its most persistent and pervasive themes

An essential and important part of living by the Qur'an is to convey its message to people around you. Indeed the moment the Prophet, blessings and peace be on him, received the first revelation he realized the immense task of bringing it to his people

Last, but not in any way least, by comprehending what you are reading in the Qur'an you will need to involve your inner person. This may be one of the most important and most effective ways to participate.

[IslamCity] Carrot, Egg or Coffee.......Reactions to Adversity

2005-10-13 Thread Curtis Sharif

A timely message in light of the recent storms we have experienced.

Peace, Curtis Sharif
Houston, Texas
Subject: Carrot?...Egg?...or...Coffee Bean?A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and howthings were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to makeit and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. Itseemed as one problem was solved a new one arose. Her mother took her tothe kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placedcarrots, in the second she placed eggs and the last she placed groundcoffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished thecarrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out andplaced them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in abowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?""Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.
She brought her closer andasked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they got soft. Shethen asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked her to sip thecoffee. The daughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughterthen asked, "What's the point, mother?" Her mother explained that eachof these objects had faced the same adversity-boiling water-but eachreacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened andbecame weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell hadprotected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boilingwater, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water they had changed thewater. "Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knockson your door, how do
you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffeebean?" Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, butwith pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with theheat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, afinancial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened andstiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter andtough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart? Or am I like the coffeebean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstancethat brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragranceand flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hours arethe darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate to anotherlevel? How do you handle adversity? ARE YOU A CARROT, AN
EGG, OR A COFFEE BEAN? Don't tell GOD how big your storm is. Tell the storm how big your GODis!

On Sadaqat
Al-Fitr

Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with them) said that the Apostle of
Allah (peace be upon him) prescribed the Sadaqa of Ramadan (Sadaqat-al-Fitr) one
sa a of dates or one sa a of barley for every free man or a slave, male or
female, and then the people equalized (one sa a of dates or barley) with half a
sa a of wheat.

[IslamCity] Qazi for direct election of Nazims in LB polls(http://jamaat.org/news/2005/oct/07/1001.html)

2005-10-13 Thread sahannan

  Dear members
  of the list,
  Assalamu
Alaikum. Please see the opposition viewpoint on Pakistan's recent local
  bodies election.
  Shah
  Abdul Hannan

  Qazi for
direct election of Nazims in LB polls
  Lahore, Oct 7:
  MMA
president and ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Qazi Hussain Ahmed has
demanded that local bodies’ elections should be held on party basis and
district nazims should be elected through direct votes of the people
otherwise corrupt practices and the government’s influence could not be
contained in the LB elections, say a press release.
Giving Jumma sermon at Jamia Mosque Markaz-e-Islami
Peshawar Qazi Hussain Ahmed said that non-party local bodies’ elections in
the country were basically a ploy to divide and disintegrate nation. He
said General Pervez Musharraf is conspiring against its own people in
order to prolong his unconstitutional rule in the country.
  By
disqualifying the graduates of deeni madaris, he said, the government
paved the way for contesting the elections of corrupt and plunderers. He
said landlords and smugglers have won the elections by ruthlessly spending
money and doing massive horse-trading. The product of rigging and
horse-trading can not serve the nation as they will try to recover the
money which they spent on elections instead of paying attention to solve
the gross root problems faced by common man in the street.
  Qazi
Hussain Ahmed said on the one hand Gen Pervez Musharraf is befriending
India and Tel Aviv while on the other he has waged open war against its
own people and tribes in the bordering areas of Pakistan. He said forces
of evil are out to attack Pakistan and Islam in the leadership of
  America.
  They,
he said, are trying to control the resources of Muslims. Only upright and
capable leadership can steer the country out from the present messed up
situation. The masses have seen the real face of Gen Musharraf and they
will soon realign their ranks to start a forceful drive against him, the
  press release
concluded

Dear Brothers and Sisters
please find below my poem I wrote for those who have a soft heart and feel the
pain of others.

 A LITTLE DOVE 12.06.2005

THIS WORLD WAS BUILT TO BE IN PEACE

BUT MAN HAS DESTOYED TO ITS FINAL CREASE

WHILE CHILDREN INNOCENTLY PLAY A GAME

AND MEN HAVE BECOME A SYMBOL OF SHAME

IF ONE IS KILLING THE OTHER TO LIVE

A THIRD IS KILLING IN THE NAME OF PEACE

WHEN A NATION IS BUILT ON A COUNTRY'S GRAVE

THEY CALL THEMSELVES AS MIGHTY AND BRAVE

IRAQ PALESTINE ARE ON A ROUTINE KILL

FOR JACK JILL TO GO UP ON THE HILL

THERE IS NO LIMIT FOR THE DESTRUCTION'S CAUSE

YOU SPEAK OF REBUILDING A NATION FAST

IS IT REQUIRED TO CRUSH THEM FIRST

AND REBUILD THEIR HOUSES FOR MONEY'S THIRST

MAN IS DANGEROUS IN THE CLOAK OF MASEEH

BUT HOW HE SPEAKS THE LANGUAGE OF PEACE

MASSACRE OF MEN ON ITS HIGHEST PEAK

IS THIS THE MEANING OF GLOBAL PEACE?

CAN ORPHANS BE GIVEN THEIR PARENTS ABACK?

AND WIDOWS RETRIEVE THEIR ORIGINAL LIFE TRACK?

THE PEACE OF DEATH IN MISSILES AND BOMBS

BODIES WERE SCATTERED AWAY FROM TOMBS

KARABALA HAS REPEATED ITS HISTORIC DAY

WATER ELECTRICITY FOOD IN SCARCE

GUNS OF DESTRUCTION AND GRANADES TO INVADE

ROAMING FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE TO RAID

BULLET IN THE CHEST OR HEART OR BRAIN

LEAVE THEM TO DIE AFTER BLOOD DRAIN

YOUNG OR OLD, CHILDREDN OR INSANE

BULLET WILL LEAVE NOBODY BUT STAIN

TANKS ON THE GROUND AND CLUSTER BOMBS ABOVE

SINGLED OUT ASIDE AND ALLIANCE OF HUNDRED AND ABOVE

OIL FOR FOOD IS THE SLOGAN OF PEACE

YOU LIVE WITHOUT PEACE AND DIE WITHOUT PEACE

LIKE SHOW A PIECE OF BREAD AND KILL

TAKE AWAY THE OIL TO YOUR COUNTRY'S FILL

MY HEART WEEPS SILENTLY FOR SUDAN'S SWEEP

WHEN I SAW THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ASLEEP

INDIA,
PHILIPPINES, INDONESIA
AND SO ON

FLAMES OF HATRED RISING DUSK AND DAWN

IF MONEY AND POWER ARE A MAN'S NEED

TO ADD MORE AND MORE HE DOES BAD DEED

WE FORGOT THAT WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS

AND STARTED DOING ALL THOSE DIRTY THINGS

I WISH TO SPREAD THE MESSAGE OF LOVE

BUT THE WORLD IS BIG AND I AM A LITTLE DOVE

I squinted to read the counter demonstrators' signs, in an effort to understand
their argument. There was none. They carried bizarre signs, such as Code

democracy to the world, toppling one dictator at a time. Some of
them wore tee-shirts saying Club G'itmo. Their main point seemed to
be that Code Pink--not an illegal war--is the problem.

It was the classic propaganda tactic: when you can't answer your opponent's

[IslamCity] The Manners of Fasting

2005-10-13 Thread laila sultan
The Manners of Fasting

Ramadan comes with blessings to the Muslims. The reports from the Qur'an and
the Sunnah encourage an increase in action to get reward as we saw and also out
of gratefulness to Allah who says [in meaning]:

(He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must
glorify Allah for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him
[al-Baqara, 2:185]

and similarly about Hajj;

So when you have accomplished your rites (of Hajj) remember Allah as you
remember your fathers or with a far greater remembrance [al-Baqara, 2:200]
1-Eating the Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal)
Suhoor is distinctive of the Ummah of Muhammad salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam;

`Amr Ibn al-`Aas reported that the Messenger of Allah, salla Allahu alaihi wa
sallam, said: The distinction between our fasting and the fasting of the
people of the book [Jews and Christians] is the taking of Suhoor. [Muslim]

There are blessings in Suhoor ...

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (S) said: Indeed Allah
placed blessing in the Suhoor and in the weighing [of grain]. [Shirazi and
al-Khateeb/ al-Jami`us-Sagheer; Hasan]

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah said: Eat Suhoor, for there are
blessings in it. [al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Salman also reported that the Prophet said: Blessing is in three : The Jama`a
[the congregation of the Muslims], The Thareed [a broth of (crumbled) bread and
meat] and the Suhoor. [Tabarani and Abu Nu`aim; Hasan]

A companion said: I entered upon the Prophet (S) and he was taking the Suhoor
and he said: It is a blessing which Allah has given to you, so do not leave
it. [Ahmad and an-Nasa'i; Sahih].

Abud-Dardaa' reported that the Prophet (S) said: Come to the blessed morning
meal (meaning the Suhoor). [Ahmad, an-Nasa`i and Abu Dawood].

Perhaps the greatest blessing of Suhoor is that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta`ala
(SWT) [Most High and Free of all imperfection], covers the people eating Suhoor
with His forgiveness and send His Mercy upon them. The angles ask for
forgiveness for them and supplicate to Allah to pardon them, so that they may
be granted freedom from the Fire by the Most Merciful in the month of the
Qur'an

Abu Said al-Khudri said: The Prophet (S) said: The Suhoor is a meal of
blessings, so do not leave it, even if one of you just takes a gulp of water,
since Allah sends mercy and His angels seek forgiveness for those who take
Suhoor. [Ahmad and Ibn Abi Shaibah]

These reports from the Prophet (S) leave no room for the believer to miss
Suhoor. Therefore let us take it upon us to never miss it.

(a) What would fulfill eating Suhoor?

Eating Suhoor would be fulfilled by eating a small or large quantity of food,
or even just by drinking a sip of water as mentioned in the Hadith of Abu Said
al-Khudri. However, the best of Suhoor is eating dates since the Prophet (S)
said: How excellent are dates as the believer's Suhoor. [Abu Dawood, Ibn
Hibban and al-Baihaqee; Sahih]

(b) The time for Suhoor: The time for Suhoor is between the middle of the night
and dawn. It is considered best to delay it (that is, as close to dawn a
possible).

The Prophet (S) said: Hasten the breaking of the fast and delay the Suhoor.
[Sahih al-Jami`]

Zaid ibn Thabit reported: We ate Suhoor with the Messenger of Allah and then
we got up for the prayer. He was asked: 'What was the amount of time between
the two?' He responded: '[The time it would take to recite] fifty ayat.'
[al-Bukhari and Muslim].

'Amr ibn Maimun adds: The companions of Muhammad (S), would be the first to
break the fast and the last to eat their Suhoor. [al-Baihaqi, Abdur-Razzaq and
al-Haithami; Sahih]

The Prophet (S) said: We, the Prophets, have been ordered to hasten breaking
the fast, delay the Suhoor, and to put our right hand on the left one in
prayer. [Sahih al-Jami`]
2-Hastening in breaking the fast:
It is preferred for the fasting person to hasten in breaking the fast when the
sun has set.

Sahl ibn Sa`d reported that the Prophet (S) said: The people will not cease to
be upon good as long as they hasten in breaking the fast. [Bukhari and
Muslim].

Sahl also reports that the Prophet (S) said: The Ummah will not cease to be
upon my Sunnah as long as they do not await the stars when breaking the fast.
[Ibn Hibban; Sahih]

'Amr ibn Maimun adds: The companions of Muhammad (S), would be the first to
break the fast and the last to eat their Suhoor. [al-Baihaqi, Abdur-Razzaq and
al-Haithami; Sahih]

He (S) said: The religion [of Islam] shall continue to prevail as long as
people hasten breaking the fast, for the Jews and Christians delay it [Sahih
al-Jami`]

Abud-Dardaa' said: Three things are from the manners of the Prophets:
Hastening in breaking the fast, delaying the Suhoor, and placing the right hand
upon the left in prayer. [Tabarani]

Ahmad and Abu Dawood recorded through Anas with a Hasan Isnad that the
Messenger of Allah (S) used to break

[IslamCity] Masnoon Duas to Start Break the Fast

2005-10-13 Thread Muhammad Salman Faheem

Bismillah hir Rehman nir Rahim

Masnoon Duas to Start Break the Fast

Masnoon Dua to start a Fast
There is no du’aa’ that the Muslim should say when starting to fast each day. Rather he should simply have the intention that he is going to fast tomorrow.
The intention is subject to the condition that it be made at night, before the fajr, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever does not intend to fast before dawn, there is no fast for him.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 730.

According to a version narrated by al-Nasaa’i (2334):

“Whoever does not intend to fast from the night before, there is no fast for him.” Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 573.

What is meant is that whoever does not intend to fast and resolve to do so from the night before, his fast is not valid.

This is with regard to obligatory fasts. With regard to naafil fasts it is permissible to make the intention to fast on the day, if you have not eaten or drunk or had intercourse after Fajr, because it was proven in the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) entered upon her one day at duha time and said, “Do you have anything (any food)?” She said, “No.” He said, “Then I am fasting.” Narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh.

Its an innovation (bid’ah) Uttering the intention to fast out loud:

The intention (niyyah) is an action of the heart. The Muslim should resolve in his heart that he is going to fast tomorrow.

It is not prescribed for him to utter it out loud and say, “I intend to fast” or “I will fast tomorrow” or other phrases that have been innovated by some people. Such as :

The correct intention is when a person resolves in his heart that he is going to fast tomorrow.

Masnoon Dua to Break the Fast:

‘Abdullash Ibn ‘Amr Ibn Al-‘Aas related that the Messenger of Allaah (S) said: ‘Indeed the fasting person has at the time of breaking fast, a supplication which is not rejected’. Ibn Abee Mulaykah said: ‘I heard ‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Umar say when he broke fast:

‘O Allaah, I ask You by Your mercy which envelops all things, that You forgive me.’

‘The thirst has gone and the veins are quenched, and reward is confirmed, if Allaah wills.’
(Narrated by Abu Dawood; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood, 2066). This can only mean after breaking the fast.

Important Note:

The du’aa’ “Allaahumma laka sumtu wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu” (O Allaah, for You have I fasted and by Your provision I have broken my fast)” was narrated by Abu Dawood, 2358. It is a mursal hadeeth so it is da’eef (weak). Al-Albaani classed it as da’eef in ben
 dawwad (510)

Someone have added “wa bika amunto wa alaika tawakaltu” in the above dua and hence it became “allahumma inni laka sumto wa bika amunto wa alaika tawakaltu wa ala wa rizqika uftartow”

Which is a wellknown dua of iftaar among people.

But its not the masnoon dua for iftaar.

Supplication said when breaking fast in someone's home:

‘May the fasting break their fast in your home, and may the dutiful and pious eat your food, and may the angels send prayers upon you.’

Related Fatawas:
Time of du’aa’ when breaking fast
Du’aa’ of the fasting person when breaking his fast
There is no specific du’aa’ to be recited when starting to fast
Uttering the intention to fast out loud is an innovation (bid’ah)
When should a person make the intention to fast, and what if he finds out during the day that Ramadan has begun?

Gifts to those who fast
Shaykh `Aa'id Abdullah al-Qarnee
At this stage I can not find a better gift or greater
masterpiece than to present to those who fast gifts from the Prophet of guidance
sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam. They are those practical hadiths that have been
mentioned in connection with rewards and blessings. Behold! They are the hadiths
that lead to the doors of happiness and the paths of goodness in this world and
the Hereafter.

0 you who fast! Record these hadiths and implement
them:

The Prophet
sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam said: 'Whoever says at daybreak:
"There is no God save Allah alone, He
has no partner, to Him belongs the dominion and the praise and He has power over
all things"; such a person will have the equivalent of a slave from the son of
Ismail; ten good deeds will be written for him, ten misdeeds will be erased, and
he will be elevated ten levels. He will be protected from Satan until evening,
and if he says it in the evening, he would have the same rewards until morning'
(Ahmad, Abu Daud, Ibn Majah - sahih).

The Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa
sallam also said: 'Whoever says in the morning or in the evening: "O Allah! You
are my Lord. There is no God beside You. You created me and I am Your slave and
I have taken a covenant to You and promised You what I am able to do. I seek
refuge with You from the evil of what I have done, I acknowledge Your favour
upon me and I acknowledge my sin. Forgive me because none forgives sins except
You." If a servant died during the day or night after having said this prayer,
he will enter Paradise' (Ahmad, Abu Daud, Al Nisa'e, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, Al
Hakim - sahih; Al Bukhari transmits another version of this hadith).

Again the Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa
sallam said: 'Whoever says at morning or evening: "Glory and praise be Allah the
Great" one hundred times, no one will come forward on the Day of Judgement with
better than he; except if someone said the same as him and added to it' (Muslim,
Ahmad, Abu Daud, Al Tirmidhi).

'Whoever said: "Glory and praise be to
Allah the Great", a date tree will be planted for him in the Paradise' (Al
Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih).

'Whoever says: "Glory and praise be to
Allah" one hundred times in a single day his sins would be erased even if they
were like the waves of the sea' (Bukhari and Muslim).

'Whoever implements ten verses of the
Quran will not be included among the negligent. Whoever implements one hundred
verses will be considered among the obedient. And, whoever implements one
thousand verses will be among he extremely rich' (Abu Daud, Ibn Hibban -
sahih).

'Whoever says in the evening: "In the
name of Allah with whose name there can be no harm in the earth or in the
heavens and He is the Hearer the Knower" three times, he will not be afflicted
with a sudden calamity before morning. And whoever says it in the morning three
times will not be afflicted with a sudden calamity before evening' (Abu Daud,
Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih).

'Whoever says: "I seek refuge with the
perfect words of Allah from the evil that He created" three times in the evening
will not be harmed by the bite of a serpent during that night' (Al Tirmidhi, Ibn
Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih).

'Whoever says upon leaving his house:
"In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no movement and no power
except with Allah", it would be said to him: "You have been contented and you
took precaution", Satan will turn away from him' (Al Tirmidhi, Abu Daud, Ibn
Hibban, Ibn al Sunni - sahih).

'Whoever says when he hears the caller
to prayer: "And I bear witness that there is no God save Allah, He is alone and
has no partner and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. I
am pleased with Allah as Lord, Muhammad as Prophet and Islam as religion" all
his sins will be forgiven' (Muslim and the other five).

'Whoever recites the Surah al Ikhlas
ten times, Allah will build for him a house in the Paradise' (Ahmad -
sahih).

'Whoever recites the Surah al Kahf on
a Friday, a light will be created for him until the next Friday' (Al Hakim and
Al Bayhaqi - sahih).

'Whoever recites the verse of the throne
after every compulsory prayer will not be forbidden entrance to Paradise' (Ibn
Hibban and Al Nisa'e - sahih).

'Whoever recites Surah al Ikhlas it is
as if he read one-third of the Quran' (Ahmad, Al Nisa'e, Al Tirmidhi -
sahih).

This bouquet from Muhammad sallallahu
`alaihi wa sallam we grant to all those who fast.

O Allah! Help us to remember You, thank You and worship
You in the best way. Amen.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A powerful earthquake flattened entire villages of mud-brick homes, triggered landslides and toppled a 10-story apartment building on Saturday, killing more than 18,000 people as it devastated a mountainous swath touching Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. Pakistan's private Aaj television reported the Pakistani death toll had jumped to 25,000. But the report, which included casualties in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, gave no source for its figures and there was no immediate confirmation from Pakistani officials but they have said the toll will rise.

The casualty toll from the 7.6-magnitude tremor rose sharply Sunday as rescuers struggled to dig people from the wreckage, their work made more difficult as rain and hail turned dirt and debris into sticky muck. Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan, Pakistan's chief army spokesman said early Sunday that more than 18,000 had been killed — 17,000 of them in Pakistani Kashmir, where the quake was centered. Some 41,000 people were injured, he said. "The death toll is gradually rising," Sultan told The Associated Press. He said authorities had counted the
 bodies.

For hours, aftershocks rattled an area stretching from Afghanistan across northern Pakistan into India's portion of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir. Hospitals moved quake victims onto lawns,
fearing tremors could cause more damage, and many people spent the night in the open. The earthquake, which struck just before 9 a.m. Saturday, caused buildings to sway for about a minute in the capitals of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, an area some 625 miles across. Panicked people ran from homes and
offices, and communications were cut to many areas. Most of the devastation occurred in the mountains of northern Pakistan, where the dead included 250 girls crushed at a school and 200 soldiers on duty in the Himalayas.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered about 60 miles northeast of the capital, Islamabad, in the forested mountains of Pakistani Kashmir, and was followed by 22 aftershocks, including a 6.2-magnitude temblor. "It is a national tragedy," Sultan said earlier. "This is the worst earthquake in recent times."

In Mansehra, about 90 miles northwest of the Pakistani capital, a shopowner named Haji Fazal Ilahi stood vigil over the body of his 14-year-old daughter, which lay under a sheet on a hospital mattress. He said his wife, another daughter and a brother also died when the family's house fell. "I could see rocks and homes tumbling down the mountains," said Ilahi, who was driving to his village of Garlat when the quake struck. "When I reached my village, there was nothing left of my home."

India's government offered condolences and assistance to Pakistan, a longtime rival with which it has been pursuing peace efforts after fighting three wars since independence from British rule in 1947, two of them over Kashmir. "While parts of India have also
suffered from this unexpected natural disaster, we are prepared to extend any assistance with rescue and relief which you may deem appropriate," Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a message to Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

India reported at least 340 people killed injured when the quake collapsed 2,700 houses and other buildings in Jammu-Kashmir state. Most of the deaths occurred in the border towns of Uri, Tangdar and Punch and in the city of Srinagar, said B.B. Vyas, the state's divisional commissioner. Some 215 Pakistani soldiers died in Pakistan's portion of Kashmir, Sultan said. On the India side of the border, at least 39 soldiers were killed when their bunkers collapsed, said Col. H. Juneja, an Indian army spokesman. In Pakistan's northwestern district of Mansehra, the police chief, Ataullah Khan Wazir, said authorities there pulled the bodies of 250 students from the wreckage of one girls' school in the village of Ghari Habibibullah. Dozens of children were feared killed in other schools.

Mansehra was believed to be a hotbed of Islamic militant activity during the time the Taliban religious militia ruled neighboring Afghanistan. Al-Qaida operatives trained suicide squads at a camp there, Afghan and Pakistani officials told The Associated Press in 2002. Afghanistan appeared to suffer the least damage. In its east, an 11-year-old girl was crushed to death when a wall in her home collapsed, police official Gafar Khan said.

A U.S. military spokesman, Lt. Col. Jerry O'Hara, said the quake was

Egypt Opposition Forms Coalition Ahead of
  Polls

Habib said the move, though long
overdue, was a step in the right direction to challenge the ruling
NDP.
By Hamdy Al Husseini, IOL Correspondent
  CAIRO, October 9, 2005 (IslamOnline.net) – Egypt's
main opposition parties and the Muslim Brotherhood have formed a unified
coalition to run for the November parliamentary elections.
"The Wafd, Tagammu and Nasserists and the Muslim
Brotherhood in addition to some eight other opposition groups have formed
a National Front for Change," Tagammu Secretary General Rifaat Al-Said
  announced Saturday, October 8.
He said a common platform would be drafted by the
nascent coalition which would not field candidates in its name to vie in
  the legislative elections.
"The Wafd, Tagammu and the Nasserists will in all
likelihood field candidates as part of a coalition while the Brotherhood
will field their own," Said added.
The fledging National Front for Change also includes
the Kefaya movement, Center Party, Karama Party, the National Coalition
for Reform, the National Gathering for Democratic Change, Labour party and
  the Popular Campaign for Change.
Leader of Al-Ghad (Tomorrow) party, Ayman Nour, who
trailed second in the September 7 presidential elections, did not joint
the front over opposition from the Wafd Party.
Former prime minister Dr. Aziz Sedki was named the
front's secretary general and Noaman Gomaa, the Wafd Party leader, as its
  spokesman.
  Overdue
Mohamed Habib, deputy leader of the Muslim
Brotherhood, said the move was long overdue but remains a step in the
right direction to challenge President Hosni Mubarak's ruling National
  Democratic Party.
"The step should have been taken long time ago to
allow the opposition parties to draw joint plans of action for the
November polls, however, it is still a step in the right direction that
would yield benefits to all powers," he told IslamOnline.net.
Habib expected many of the front's candidates to win
  seats in the parliamentary elections.
He stressed that his group, which is officially banned
and whose candidates run as independents, will coordinate with the front
  but field its own candidates.
"Coordination with the front will include withdrawing
candidates from a number of constituencies in which other parties have
  more powerful candidates," Habib said.
The Brotherhood leader was earlier quoted as saying
that an agreement was reached with the Karama (under construction) and
frozen Labor parties to coordinate in around 30 constituencies in a number
  of governorates.
The Muslim Brotherhood is expected to field around 150
candidates in the legislative polls, says IOL's Correspondent.
The group is officially banned but, between periodic
crackdowns, is often tolerated and has 16 deputies in the 454-member
  parliament.
Hundreds of its members have been detained during
anti-government protests since May, but most have been
  released.
  Powerful Opposition
Hamid Mahmoud, deputy leader of the Arab Nasserist
Party, said the nascent front will be a golden opportunity for the
opposition parties to make a strong showing in the November
  polls.
"It is also meant to rejuvenate the Egyptian
opposition after more than two decades of NDP attempts to weaken the
opposition through the emergency law, election forgery and hegemony over
all powers in the country," he told IOL.
"The front's members will support the strongest
candidates in the constituencies, regardless of the candidate's political
affiliation, to beat the NDP candidates."
Mubarak was declared on September 9, the winner of
Egypt's first multi-candidate presidential race with 88.5 percent of the
  vote.
Many experts maintain the legitimacy of his new
six-year term is undermined by the fact that he secured only one-fifth of
the 32 million eligible voters, attesting to eroding public confidence in
  his rule.

When I started saying Tahajjud Salat a few months back, I decided to go along with the commonly held belief that our Prophet SAS used to say 2 x 4 = 8 Rakah + 3 Witr. However with the onset of Ramazan, I am a bit confused. I wonder if I should finish Witr along with the Jamaat (Congregation) after the 20 Rakah of Taraveeh or should I continue with my practice of detaching myself from the Jamat after 20 Rakah and finally do my Witr after Tahajjud as usual.

At present I continue with my existing practice of doing Witr after Tahajjud only.

This is important, please clarify.

What are you talking about?

TAraveeh is 8 raka't every evening according to Imam Ahmad bin Hnabal, and twenty Rak'at according to Imam Abu Haneefa.

That eleven rak'at you are talking about is the TAHAJJUD.

Get your facts right.

You are confused yourself and confusing others.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Number of rak'ahs of qiyaam
The number of rak'ahs is eleven, and it is preferable in our opinion not to exceed this number, following the practice of the Messenger of Allaah (Sal) because he never did more than that in his life. 'Aa'ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) was asked about how he prayed in Ramadaan. She said, The Messenger of Allaah never prayed more than eleven rak'ahs (of qiyaam), whether during Ramadaan or any other time. He would pray four, and don't ask me how beautiful or how long they were. Then he would pray four, and don't ask me how beautiful or how long they were. Then he would pray three. (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Muslim and others).

Women can pray qiyaam in congregation
Women can attend the prayers too, as is stated in the hadeeth of Abu Dharr referred to above. Indeed, it is permissible to appoint an imaam just for them, apart from the imaam of the men. It was proven that when 'Umar (Ral) gathered the people to pray qiyaam, he appointed Ubayy ibn Ka'b to lead the men and Sulaymaan ibn Abi Hathmah to lead the women. 'Arfajah al-Thaqafi said: 'Ali ibn Abi Taalib (Ral) used to command the people to pray during the night in Ramadaan, and he would appoint an imaam for the men and an imaam for the women. I was the imaam for the women.

I say: this is fine in my view so long as the mosque is big enough so that they will not disturb one another.
However, is a person is praying qiyaam by himself,he can make it as long as he wishes;
if others agree with the imaam, he may also make it as long as he wishes.
The longer it is, the better,
but a person should not go to extremes and spend the whole night in qiyaam, except on rare occasions, following the example of the Prophet (Sal) who said: The best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. If a person is praying as an imaam, he should make it only as long as is easy for the people behind him, because the Prophet (Sal) said: If any of you leads the people in prayer, let him make it short, because among them are the young and the old, the weak, and those who have pressing needs. But if he is praying alone, let him make it as long as he likes.

Taraweeh Salaat
In this belated day and age, every morn heralds a new fitna that strikes at the very root of Imaan and amal. For the past fourteen hundred years, the Ummah has been performing twenty rakaats of Taraweeh without question. However
"a sect" now claims that Taraweeh is ONLY eight rakaats, which implies that for fourteen hundred years the Ummah had deviated from the Sunnah of Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and had performed twenty rakaats without any Shari proof.
