I`tikaaf

Islamic way of
vacationing and self-rejuvenation

Ayub A. Hamid

I’tikaaf is an act of
worship where a worshipper secludes himself or herself from the
public and from routines of daily life and, in addition to fasting,
spends time exclusively in remembering Allaah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala
with a profound consciousness of His presence and a strong feeling
of humility in front of His majesty, glory and greatness (Dzikr).
This Dzikr or remembrance may also be expressed by performing
supererogatory Salaah (Nawaafil), reflecting on the messages of the
Qur-aan, sharing and propagating those messages, reflecting deeply
on the ways of effectively achieving Islamic objectives[1] and executing
those plans. These activities take all of a worshipper’s time during
the days and nights of I’tikaaf, except for the minimum time
required for sleep, suoor and iftaar. During the period of
I’tikaaf, the Mu’takif (one performing the I’tikaaf) cannot leave
the place of seclusion except for calls of nature or physical
cleanliness and purification needs. All social activities and
obligations are completely abandoned during the period of I’tikaaf.
Even utterance of any words not directly related to the
aforementioned acts of worship is avoided. The men seclude
themselves in a Masjid and women in a room of their home where they
usually perform their Salaah.

I’tikaaf can be
performed for any duration of time at any time of the year -- from a
few hours to a few days. The Prophet Sall Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam
had started performing I’tikaaf in the cave of Hiraa in his yearning
to worship Allaah even before he was told that he was being
appointed as the Messenger of Allaah. In fact, the first revelation
came to him during such an I’tikaaf in Hiraa on one of the last ten
nights of Ramadhaan -- the night of Qadr. The Prophet Sall Allaahu
`alayhi wa sallamcontinued to perform this I’tikaaf during the
last ten days of Ramadhaan every year. It is reported that one year
he could not perform it so the subsequent year, he performed it for
20 days, as he did in the last Ramadhaan of his life.

In this way, I’tikaaf
during the last ten days of Ramadhaan is a highly emphasized Sunnah
of the Prophet, Sall Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam.

If I’tikaaf is
performed, sincerely and devotedly, it has all the ingredients of
spiritual growth as well as rejuvenation of mental faculties and
relaxation from stress and pressure of daily life. Unfortunately,
Muslims have stopped paying much attention to this very important
tool of upliftment and rejuvenation that not only helps a person
grow in their relationship with Allaah but also washes away their
stresses and pressures, giving a very healthy contentment to their
hearts – a contentment that only comes from the relationship and
remembrance of Allaah:

“Those who believe and whose hearts
attain peacefulness by the remembrance of Allaah; know that it is by
the remembrance of Allaah that hearts attain peacefulness.”
(Ar-Ra’d
13:28)

This is the Islamic
concept of vacationing and taking holiday from the drudgeries of
day-to-day life. This kind of holiday not only gives us the benefits
of relaxation and rejuvenation, but also helps us fulfill the
objectives of pleasing AllaahSubhaanahu wa Ta`aala through
excellence and purification of our personal and collective life. It
leads us to the eternal and permanent happiness, joys and relaxation
among the superbly

[IslamCity] Duaa for Night of Qadr

2005-10-26 Thread Nazish Azmi

Duaa for Night of Qadr
One of the best du’aa’s that can be recited on Laylat al-Qadr is that which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) taught ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her). It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who classed it as saheeh, that ‘Aa’ishah said: I said: “O Messenger of Allaah, If I know which night is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say?” He said: “Say: Allaahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibb al-‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni (O Allaah, You are All-Forgiving and You love forgiveness so forgive me).”

[IslamCity] Muslims Beware - fraudulent Zam Zam water found

2005-10-26 Thread Islahonline

Subject: Muslims Beware - fraudulent "Zam Zam" water
found

Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa
Barakaatuhu

PLEASE
read the warning below.

Please
forward this message to all brothers and sisters.

I would like to bringa UK
Food Standards Agency press release (Thurs 20th Oct
2005) to your attentionand would request that
youpublicisethis issue urgently because of the potential health
hazard, particularly during the month of Ramadhan, when demand for Zam
Zamwater isincreased. (Links
below)

Many
brands of bottled water claiming to be genuine "Zam Zam" water have appeared
recently, particularly in those areas which have a significant Muslim
population.

The
Food Standards Agency has investigated complaints from Muslim organisations and
issued a warning alert to the Muslim community to beware of the fraudulent sale
of "Zam Zam" water that may contain HIGH LEVELS OF ARSENIC.

A
brand sampled by the London Borough of Westminster was been found to contain
almost three times the permitted level of arsenic, which could
contribute to increasing people’s risk of cancer.

3
Local authorities have sampled different brands of the water and in all cases
have found that the nitrate levels far exceed the limits.

Other
brands of Zam Zam water are thought to be on sale in the UK and could be
similarly contaminated.

As
genuine Zam Zam water cannot be legally exported from Saudi Arabia for
commercial sale, any product found in the shops would have a safety risk.

The
FSA is advising Muslims not to buy or drink commercially available brands of Zam
Zam water and to inform their Local Authority Environmental Health or Trading
Standards Department if they come across Zam Zam water on sale.

This
advice does not relate to the genuine Zam Zam water being brought into UK by
returning pilgrims, as an accompanied or unaccompanied ‘personal
import’.

[IslamCity] Plan for Muslim center stalls - DMN Article

2005-10-26 Thread Raed Sbet

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/city/richardson/stories/DN-muslimcenter_20met.ART0.North.Edition2.18c19017.html
Plan for Muslim center stalls
Richardson: Decision to place it in industrial area rethought
05:59 AM CDT on Thursday, October 20, 2005
By WENDY HUNDLEY / The Dallas Morning News

A local engineer who wanted to establish a Muslim youth center in Richardson to help fight terrorism has withdrawn his zoning application to the city.
"We want to work on a better location," Raed Omar Sbeit said Wednesday afternoon. "We're still looking at Richardson."
Mr. Sbeit had sought a special permit to establish the Muslim American Society Youth Center in an area zoned for industrial uses near the city's Telecom Corridor.
It would have been the society's first youth center in North Texas and part of a growing network of centers for Muslim youths around the country.
The Richardson City Council had tabled the zoning request until Monday to learn more about the organization. Some council members had expressed concern that an area designed for high-tech companies would not be suitable for a youth center.
After hearing the council's concerns, a steering committee for the project decided to look for "a better location with more flexibility and less restrictions," according to a letter sent to the city this week.
"We felt the city has some points," Mr. Sbeit said. "They want to keep that area for telecom businesses."
Mr. Sbeit, an Irving engineer, told the Richardson council last week that the center would be similar to a YMCA and would provide Muslims ages 17 to 30 a place to learn leadership skills, receive academic tutoring and practice their faith.
After the London bombings, the Muslim American Society, based in Virginia, announced a campaign to expand its youth center and steer Muslim youths away from extremist views, society officials said.
A report published in the Chicago Tribune last year linked the society to the international Muslim Brotherhood, an organization with a violent history in the Middle East.
Muslim American Society officials have denied ties to the Muslim Brotherhood or any terrorist organization.

Re: [IslamCity] Re: Question--for sister Aqsa, and br. Muhsin Naquvi

2005-10-26 Thread syed-mohsin naquvi

Salam,

If Eed falls on Friday, the faithfull will do the Salat-ul-Eed before midday. The actual time of Salat-ul-Eed is any time after the sunrise to before teh Zuhr prayer.

The simple answer is that if it was another day of teh week, teh faithful will have to do Zuhr prayer. Since it is a Friday, everyone would do teh Friday prayer instead of the Zuhr.

I do not see how the law can change only because the Eed is falling on a Friday.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Syed-Mohsin Naquvi

2005-10-26 Thread Nazish Azmi

Laylat ul-Qadr is the most blessed night. A person who misses it has indeed missed a great amount of good.
A chance to have ourprevious sins forgiven.

A'ishah (radhiallahu `anha) reported:

"When last ten days starts, the Prophet (saw) would tighten his izaar (i.e. he stayed away from his wives in order to have more time for worship), spend the whole night awake (in prayer), and wake up his family."

Re: [IslamCity] Losing someone you love

a beautiful piece! thank you for sharing it with us ... :-)

i would also like to ask your permition to copy paste it in my multiply.com.. is that okay?

Losing
someone you love...Losing someone you love either it could be a
friend or a member of your family... is probably one of the worst experiences of
life. It doesn't matter how strong you are; nothing can prepare you for the
death or a separation of a loved one. When you first hear about what's happened
you're in denial you can't believe that someone you know and love is dead or has
left you. You can't bear the thought of never seeing, hearing or talking to them
again. You feel numb even fearful at the thought. You keep expecting and hoping
against hope to see them somewhere even if it was for a second to say the things
you didn't say but fate is cruel and you don't get a second chance to say
'sorry', 'thank you' or 'I love you'. When you lose someone you start to think
about your life and how there are so many things that you say and do that are
wrong and a waste of valuable time. You start to consider questions like am
I using my time wisely? If I die tomorrow will I have said everything I've
wanted to say to the people in my life? Have I done everything I should've done,
did I prepare well for the after life? Most of the time the answer
to these questions is no, because we never think of the prospect of dieing we
never think what if there is no tomorrow. We argue with those closest to us and
don't forgive them for mistakes. We let our anger take control of us and say
things in the heat of the moment without ever seriously considering what we are
saying. We never take the time to pray or to offer thanks to our Creator for
everything He has blessed us with. We always worry about material things but
never consider the soul the only thing we will be taking with us from this
world. We never satisfy the soul our passport to paradise. We fear losing our
friends and family because we feel such strong love for them but... do they know
that? Do we ever take the time to be sentimental or do we consider feelings as
uncool? We never take the time to say those nice things or to just give a smile
to show that we love them. We lead such fast and busy lives that we don't have
the time to even say salaam (peace) in some cases we don't think what
if the next time I see this person it's too late or what if there is no next
time?In conclusion, I would like to say that life is too short for
arguments mistakes and waiting for tomorrows that never come. We should make the
most of our lives and say 'salaam', 'thank you', 'sorry' and 'I love
you' more often or just give a smile to make someone's day,
because a smile says a lot more than a silence. We should live each day
as our last and live our life so that we are prepared for our death. We
should satisfy our souls and pay as much attention to our soul as we do to
everything else and not get caught up in this fast and busy world because this
is just a journey to our Final Abode. Live your life as a good human being and
ensure that you have secured your place in Paradise. Always remember God first
in the morning and last at night for you never know when you may have to leave
this world and go to the afterlife where excuses are irrelevant, where you stand
before God alone and answer to your mistakes. Remember He is Merciful and it is
never too late to change your life.We should smile more often and not
get angry with those we love so easily because at the end of the day we are all
humans and inclined to make mistakes that hurt and cause pain to the ones we
love. We should always let them know we didn't mean it because most of the time
we don't and we should always give the ones we love a second chance because
death doesn't wait for us to say bye or I love you. You have one chance at this
life and it is up to you to live your life correctly and to please God who has
blessed you so much. Death comes without warning and gives no second chances.

[IslamCity] Fwd: Fake e-mail from paypal to steal your financial info

2005-10-26 Thread Melanie
I received this e-mail from paypal. I did not add an e-mail so of course I
clicked the link to contact customer service to find out what was going on. The
link will redirect you to a different page, looks exactly like paypals home
page. If you sign in from this page it goes to a screen where it tells you your
account has been selected for verifcation. It will ask you for your credit card
number, the security code from the back, the expiration date, your birthdate,
and other financial personal info. I closed that window, and just typed in the
paypal address and it let me into my account without needing to enter my
private info. This is a scam to steal your information. I contacted paypal, so
hopefully they fix the problem. I just wanted to let as many people as possible
know so they don't get scammed.

[GFA Update] GFA Responds to Deadly Earthquake
-- October 12,
2005 - Vol. V Issue 26 - 200,000 Subscribed
 --
Dear Sir, A relief team of 13 Gospel for Asia native
missionaries has just arrived in Srinigar, Kashmir, one of the hardest-hit areas
in last week's earthquake. These men and women are bringing much-needed food,
water, clothing and the Good News of Christ's love to those who are suffering.
More than 50 GFA missionaries have already been ministering in
the Jammu area of India's Jammu Kashmir state. We have just now received
permission to send a team into Pakistan and will be sending relief workers there
in the next few days. This is not the first time we have
brought Christ's love across borders into areas of conflict. The Lord
provided opportunities to do so in Sri Lanka following the tsunami, and we pray
He will also bring fruit for His kingdom in this situation.
Please pray for our relief workers as they begin reaching out in love to
earthquake survivors. (To read the latest about ongoing work in these areas,
please click the following link.) http://www.gfa.org/earthquake?motiv=WA5A-G3LP Even as we grieve that so many have lost their
lives in the recent earthquake, we trust that the Lord will provide an open door
for the Good News to enter these areas with power as never before.
As always, we are deeply grateful for your prayers and support as we
partner together to see people helped and precious souls reached for Christ in
the wake of such events. Yours for the unreached,
K.P. Yohannan Founder President Gospel for
Asia

[IslamCity] Prophet's sayings-Night Prayers

2005-10-26 Thread Shahid Khan

Night Prayers

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa Ibn Az-Zubayr from A
isha (Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
prayed in the mosque one night and people prayed behind him.
Then he prayed the next night and there were more people. Then they gathered
on the third or fourth night and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did
not come out to them. In the morning, he said, I saw what you were doing and the
only thing that prevented me from coming out to you was that I feared that it
would become obligatory (fard) for you. This happened in Ramadan.

6.1.1.

[IslamCity] Fw: JIB--Holiday editor's allegations against Jammate Islami , Bangladesh--an ex-M.P.'s reply

2005-10-26 Thread sahannan

Subject: JIB

 UNFORTUNATE ALLEGATIONS ON PRE-CONCEIVED IDEAS
 -Enamul Hoque Manju

We are simply astonished to find how a senior and veteran journalist like
Mr. Enayetullah Khan may make untrue allegations against Jamaat-e-Islami
Bangladesh in his front page editorial note (September 23, 2005 article is
marked FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK). Throughout the whole article there is no
substantial or material points to be refuted. Led by his preconceived
ideas he has used many extreme or eccentric terms to demean
Jamaat-e-Islami. To quote some of those like, 'poisonous weed' of 'BNP's
banyan tree', 'theocratic and medieval', 'umbilical cord with religious
extremism', 'medieval pursuit of shariah based Islamic state', 'violence
driven cadre warfare', 'scheme of blue murder', 'fringe terrorists', 'the
cabal of the militants of Jamaat variants', 'back to the era of darkness',
'evil theocratic killers of the past' and so on. May I ask him
respectfully that which one would you proof with clear documents by
judging or x-raying Jamaat activities in the last 35 years? or does any
court verdict exists against Jamaat-e-Islami or its leaders on their pre
independence role? Mr. Khan's accusations against Jamaat sound like from
Awami League. Awami politics of playing only past records has contributed
it nothing in the field of politics. In fact people are vexed with all
 sorts of unsubstantial backbiting.

Mr. Khan, in his 2nd last paragraph, has demanded that 'Jamaat leadership
must explain its organizational involvement in Islamic terror'.

I shall request Mr. Khan to look into the statement of Ameer-e-Jamaat and
the industries Minister Moulana Motiur Rahman Nizami published in the very
same issue of Holiday (pls. see 3rd page, 8th column, Holiday 23/9/05). To
 quote from Holiday:

Nizami denies Jamaat's link to Aug 17 blasts
Industries Minister Matiur Rahman Nizami on September 21 deplored the
statements of the Awami League leaders including its chief and leader of
the opposition, Sheikh Hasina, about Jamaat-e-Islami's involvement in the
 August 17 countrywide blasts.

In a statement under rule 300, he told Jatiya Sangsad that although a good
number of people were arrested for their suspected link with the August 17
blasts, the main opposition had been accusing the government and the
 Jamaat-e-Islami of the incident.

'A section of the media supporting the main opposition is engaged in
implicating me and Jamaat in the incident', he said.

Nizami, also chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami, said his party since its
inception has been carrying out all its activities in a constitutional and
democratic manner. 'Jamaat was actively involved in all democratic
movements in the country and had taken part in all democratic elections',
he said. 'Jamaat believes in the politics of parliamentary culture.
He said the books published by Jamaat-e-Islami do not contain any chapter
that supports any kind of armed revolution. Islam neither supports any
kind of terrorism, nor endorses application of force, he said.

The minister in a unequivocal term said those involved in terrorist
activities in the name of Islam in fact want to make Bangladesh unstable

'They want to prove that Bangladesh is a den of fundamentalists and
extremists. Islamic parties or organizations cannot have any relation with
those persons', he said, maintaining that any link of those parties with
Jamaat-e-Islami is absurd. The minister deplored the 'heinous propaganda'
and said the objective of this propaganda was to hide the culprits and to
 attain narrow political gains.

Thanks to Holiday for publishing the statement of Maulana Nizami given on
the floor of the Parliament, the highest constitutional body that reflects
the peoples' will. Is there any more explanation needed to answer to Mr.
 Enaytullah Khan's article.

We politely like to draw his attention to the fact that he may not
subscribe to the political or ideological views of Jamaat, but as a
believer in democracy definitely he will agree with Voltair's maxim, 'I
may not agree to what you say, but I will defend to my death your right to
say it'. He may not agree to Jamaat's efforts of establishing a modern
welfare state on the basis of pristine values of Islam.

He may consider it 'medieval', 'theocratic', 'Sharia based'. But he must
support Jamaat's democratic right to go on with its efforts given that
there is popular support behind Jamaat.

By the way, the clue to 17 August bomb blast is by now clear to the
administration and the nation. The culprits trained over the borders and
having extra- territorial loyalty have used the sacred name of Islam for
their mean, evil and destructive design against the nation and the the
country. They and their accomplices and patrons deserve

[IslamCity] CHINA, SAVE THE PLANET !

2005-10-26 Thread eaotan

TO THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT:

By holding the second largest part of the huge US debt, you are holding the key
to survival
of the planetary life.

The dollar and thereby the US economy is going to collapse (that is why Bill
Gates has
changed all his dollars to euros !).

You decide whether the cancer tumor of the planet should be eradicated now or
later.

By selling your US debt papers at once you might prevent the third world war,
see the
article below.

In any case the collapse of the US economy will also hurt your economy.

A gradual disposal of your US debt holdings might minimize your loss.
But this should be compared with your losses caused by the chaos of a third
world war !

The largest part of the US debt is held by Japan. But since Japan is governed
by a fascist,
appeal to that government would be useless. And the very moment China starts
selling its
US debt papers, Japan and everybody else will have to follow suit in order to
avoid loosing
the values of their holdings.

Only the Iraqi heroes and martyrs honored by all informed mankind have so far
prevented
the madmen in Washington and Tel Aviv from starting the third world war.

But unaffected by the awareness of the whole world looking through the
US/UK/Israel
provocations of Iran, their usual tricks, lies and accomplice seeking, the
warmongers
completely disconnected from reality steadily continue their preparations for
war.

Their project is primarily driven by Sharon the blackmailer who has a complete
tight grip
of Bush the criminal and at any time can let the complicit Zionistic US media
monopoly
table the Bush complicity in the false flag 9.11 terror action carried out by
CIA/Mossad.

To obscure the coming economic breakdown it is imperative for him to start the
nuclear
war BEFORE the economic showdown.

Survival of planetary life conversely requires that the collapse of the US
economy be
accelerated to take place before the psychopaths succeed in starting the
nuclear Ragnarok
in Iran or elsewhere.

The current Plamegate scandal investigation is another case where Bush is in
trouble. And
when a sadistic sob like Bush gets cornered, he gets dangerously desperate and
may
precipitate any apocalyptic disaster,

Israel, Iran, and the US: Nuclear War, Here We Come

By Jorge Hirsch

The stage is set for a chain of events that could lead to nuclear war
over chemical weapons in the immediate future. If these events
unfold, the trigger will be Israel, the target Iran, the nuclear
aggressor the U.S. These are the reasons:

The U.S. State Department determined in August 2005 that Iran is in
violation of its CWC [Chemical Weapons Convention] obligations
because Iran is acting to retain and modernize key elements of its CW
infrastructure to include an offensive CW RD capability and
dispersed mobilization facilities.
According to the CIA, Iran likely has already stockpiled blister,
blood, choking, and probably nerve agents – and the bombs and
artillery shells to deliver them – which it previously had
manufactured.
According to (then undersecretary for arms control and international
security, now U.S. ambassador to the UN) John Bolton's testimony to
the House of Representatives (June 24, 2004), We believe Iran has a
covert program to develop and stockpile chemical weapons, and on
Iran's ballistic missiles, Iran continues its extensive efforts to
develop the means to deliver weapons of mass destruction, and The
1,300-km range Shahab-3 missile is a direct threat to Israel, Turkey,
U.S. forces in the region, and U.S. friends and allies.
In the IAEA resolution of Sept. 24 [.pdf], Iran was found to be in
noncompliance with its NPT safeguards agreements.
Members of the Israeli parliament from across the political spectrum
are urging the United States to stop Iran's nuclear programs, or
Israel will act unilaterally. Statements of grave concern about
Iran's nuclear program have been made by Defense Minister Shaul
Mofaz, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, and Mossad chief Meir Dagan
(Iran poses an existential threat to Israel). Shin Bet chief Avi
Dichter accuses Iran of plotting relentlessly to attack Israeli
targets.
According to the head of the Russian Atomic Energy Organization,
Alexander Rumyantsev, Russia will ship the first cargo of nuclear
fuel for Iran's Bushehr's reactor at the end of 2005 or early 2006.
Israel bombed Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor (which was under IAEA
supervision) in 1981 just before nuclear fuel was loaded into it (to
prevent nuclear fallout).
President Bush has said that all options are on the table if
diplomacy fails to halt Iran's nuclear program.

Bush publication ban lifted
Bush charged him with seven counts of counselling, aiding, and abetting torture
By matthew burrows
Publish Date: 20-Oct-2005

A Vancouver lawyer has won a procedural victory in her attempt to prosecute U.S. President George W. Bush under the Criminal Code.
Gail Davidson, cofounder of an international group of jurists called Lawyers Against the War, expressed her delight on October 18 following the lifting of a publication ban on court proceedings against the U.S. president.
“It’s great news, but really they had no choice,” Davidson told the Georgia Straight.

The Kitsilano lawyer got the ball rolling against Bush as soon as he set foot on Canadian soil for his November 30, 2004, visit. As a private citizen, she charged him with seven counts of counselling, aiding, and abetting torture at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and at Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay naval base. She had her charges accepted by a justice of the peace in Vancouver Provincial Court.

Bush faces prison time if the case goes to trial and he is found guilty.

[IslamCity] News: Purdah's veiled attack on fashion!

2005-10-26 Thread Nazish Azmi

Purdah's veiled attack on fashion!T S Sreenivasa Raghavan[ Saturday, October 22, 2005 12:29:02 amTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

CHENNAI: Fashion these days, cynics would say, is more about flesh. Low-waist jeans, tank tops, low-cut blouses, sports bras, mini-skirts - it's a long list of strut-one's-stuff items. Now, here's a trend-buster. Believe it or not, purdah is emerging as a strong fashion statement. Hard to digest, because, purdah has always been condemned as a mark of religious obscurantism. But in the changing world of fashion, which worships all that it burns and burns all that it worships, the purdah phenomenon is sweeping Kerala and Tamil Nadu. A lot more educated, erudite Muslim women in these states are getting under the veil. No force, no coercion. Over a period of 10 years, hundreds of exclusive purdah shops have sprung up in the two states to cater to the growing demand. Such is the reverse-fashion trend that even traditional textile shops, which concentrated only on Kancheepuram Silk Sarees, are now forced to stock veils. So, is fashion
becoming retrograde? Why this sudden fascination for a dress that casts women in a mediaeval mould?

Says 57-year-old Qumarunnisa Anwar, chairperson, Kerala State Women's Development Corporation and state president of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)'s women wing: "Women live in tough times today. Purdah offers protection. It's also emerging as a fashion symbol. I have myself inaugurated a dozen exclusive purdah shops in Malabar." Says 55-year-old PA Syed Mohamed, who set up the first exclusive purdah shop in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu a few years back: "I do a roaring business. There's a great demand for colourful purdahs. Unlike in the past, there're about 300 varieties of purdahs today." It was Iran which first set the trend, explains Syed. "It succeeded. Even today, modern and exquisite purdahs come from Iran," he says. Purdah, despite its veiling effect, has also found intellectual acceptance. Thanks to Kamala Das - renowned poet, painter, and novelist - who embraced Islam in 1999 and a new name, Kamala Surayya. She elevated the dress to
the status of a fashion statement.
"It's the most beautiful wear. I'm wearing a Kuwaiti purdah. It gives me the airs of an Arabian princess," says Das. When Das started wearing elegant purdahs with wrists full of colourful bangles, it was an awakening to many. It showed fashion could emerge out of conservatism, if need be. She asserts: "Purdah is not orthodox. If you ask me, churidaar is a retrograde wear. It doesn't suit even the Punjabi girls." "Many purdah shops have been named after me. Both in India and abroad. Nowadays, Muslim girls just can't wait to turn sweet 16 when they could use colourful purdahs." Explains 34-year-old Fathima Muzaffer who heads the women's wing of IUML in Tamil Nadu: "First, it gives protection. Second, you don't need much time to dress up. For, once you wear a burqa, nobody is going to see what you're wearing inside. Third, it saves money, as you need not spend lavishly on costly apparel. Fourth, being uniform, it hides economic and social
disparities." But the rise of the purdah can also be attributed to a feudal mindset, one that blindly imitates trends set by the elite. In fact, to the Muslims of Kerala, the purdah fever came right from the Middle East soil."

"I lived in Saudi Arabia for 11 years where I came across many wealthy women. They all hide their fortune behind modest purdahs. It's the neo-rich who ape. Traditionally, wealthy people are consistent in their tastes. When I learnt this, I started wearing a purdah,"says Suleikha, a teacher from Palakkad. Purdahs of different colours, however, don't go down well with many Muslim women. Says Rahmadunnisa, a final year BSc (Zoology) student at SIET College, Chennai, "Its very purpose is to avoid attraction. What's the use if you wear them in colour?" But her classmate, Rizwana Begum, doesn't buy the purdah argument: "It's not the dress that counts. Even without the purdah, I can prove I'm a devout Muslim through my conduct."
The holy QUran (AL Noor 24: 30-31) commands: "... say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze guard their modesty not display their adornment except what appears thereof."
Yes, in the olden days, purdah stood for simplicity. Today, diamond and gold-studded purdahs costing over Rs 10 lakh apiece, stand for aristocracy and elegance. What's more it's also found intellectual appreciation.

[IslamCity] How to Seek Laylatul-Qadr Virtues of Last 10 Days of RAMADAN

2005-10-26 Thread Asifa AM

The meaning of “Qadr” is veneration or honour, i.e. it is a night that is venerated because of its special characteristics, and because the one who stays up during this night becomes a man of honour

Laylat ul-Qadr is the most blessed night. A person who misses it has indeed missed a great amount of good. If a believing person is zealous to obey his Lord and increase the good deeds in his record, he should strive to encounter this night and to pass it in worship and obedience. If this is facilitated for him, all of his previous sins will be forgiven.

Abu Hurayrah (radhiallahu `anhu) narrated that the Messenger (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Whoever stands (in qiyaam) in Laylat ul-Qadr [and it is facilitated for him] out of faith and expectation (of Allah's reward), will have all of his previous sins forgiven." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim; the addition "and it is facilitated for him" is recorded by Ahmad from the report of `Ubaadah Bin as-Samit; it means that he is permitted to be among the sincere worshippers during that blessed night.]

The virtue of the last ten days

`A'ishah (radhiallahu `anha) reported:

"When the (last) ten started, the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) would tighten his izaar (i.e. he stayed away from his wives in order to have more time for worship), spend the whole night awake (in prayer), and wake up his family." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
And she said:

"Allah's Messenger (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) used to exert more (in worship) on the last ten than on other nights." [Muslim]

[IslamCity] Prophet's sayings-On Itikaf and fasting

2005-10-26 Thread Shahid Khan

On Itikaf and fasting

YAHYA related to me from Malik that he had heard that Al-Qasim
Ibn Muhammad and Nafi, the mawla of Abdullah Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with
him) said, You cannot do itikaf unless you are fasting, because of what Allah,
the Blessed and Exalted, says in His Book, And eat and drink until the white
thread becomes clear to you from the black thread of dawn, then complete the
fast until nighttime, and do not have intercourse with them while you are doing
Itikaf in mosques, (Surah 2: 187). Allah only mentions Itikaf together with
fasting. Malik said, That is what we go by here.

[IslamCity] Amaals For Laylatul Qadar..

2005-10-26 Thread XAB Islam Preacher

COMPLETE GUIDE TO ESSENTIAL DUAS AND
AAMAALS FOR LAYLATUL QADAR - 19, 21st AND 23rd NIGHTS

The A'maal of Shab-e-Qadr (19th, 21st 23rd of Ramadan)

Shab-e-Qadr is the night, which is the best night among the nights of the whole
year. The A'maal (religious performances) of this night are better than the
A'maal of 1000 months. In this night the divine Annual Decree is passed. The
Angels and Roohul Ameen (A highly dignified Angel) descend on this earth, in
that night. These call on the Imam of the time, and what is ordained (by Allah)
for everybody is presented before the Imam.

The common A'maals are: -

1. To take a bath. Allama Majlisi says, It is better to take a bath before
sunset so that the night prayers may be performed after bath.

2. To offer two Raqats of Namaz, in every Raqat offer Surat-al-Hamd, and
Surat-al-Tauhid/ Sure Ikhlaas (Kulhowallah) seven times, and after finishing
the prayer 70 times recite: Astagferullaah Rabbi Wa atoobo elaihe i.e., I
seek pardon from God and ask for penitence from Him.

3. The Holy Qur'an should be opened and placed in front, then one should recite,

O Allah treat me as one of those who are free from Hell, in the name of this
Holy Book sent by Thee, whatever there be in the Book. Including Ism-e-A'azam
and Asmaa-e-Husnaa and the things to be dreaded, the things that may be
expected and desired, like blessings of Jannat. Do forgive through the grace of
this book

Alaahumma inni asaloka be kitaabekal munzale Wa maa feeh, wa feehismokal
akbaro wa asmaakal husnaa, wa maa yokhaafo Wa yurjaa an taj-alani min otaqaaeka
minan-Naar,

(SALAWAT-After this he may beg from Allah whatever he wants).

4. He should place the Holy Qur'an on his head and say,

O Allah! I appeal to Thee in the name of this Qur'an and the Rooh that was sent
along with it, and in the name of the Momin (believer) whose praise is
contained in this Book and Tine obligation that is on them. No one else
recognizes the right and truth more than Thee

Allaahumma be haqqe haazal Qur'an we be haqqe man arsaltahoo beh, Wa be haqqe
kulle momenin madahtahoo feeh, we be haqqeka alaihim fa-laa ahada a'arafo be

(SALAWAT-After this he should repeat 10 times each):

BEKA YA ALLAH'HO (S.W.T.)

BE MOHAMMADIN (S.A.W.)

BE ALIYYIN (A.S.)

BE FATEMATA (A.S.)

BIL HASANE (A.S.) BIL HUSAINE (A.S.)

BE JA'FAR IBN MOHAMMEDIN (A.S.)

BE MOOSA IBN JA'FAR (A.S.)

BE ALI IBN MOOSA (A.S.)

BE MOHAMMED IBN ALIYYIN (A.S.)

BE ALI IBN MOHAMMED (A.S.)

BIL HASAN IBN ALIYYIN (A.S.)

BIL HOJJATIL QAEM (A.S.)

5. To recite the Ziarat of Imam Hussain (A.S.). According to Hadis, during
Shab-e-Qadr an angel proclaims from the Arsh (Throne) on the Seventh sky,
Allah the Benevolent forgives him, whosoever performs the Ziarat of the grave
of Imam-e-Hussain (A.S.).

6. One should keep himself awake throughout these three nights. The vigil
during these nights carries great Sawab (heavenly reward).

7. To offer 100 Raq'ats of Namaz. It has been highly recommended. It is better
to recite (after Surat-al-Hamd) 10 times the Surat-al-Tauhid/ Sure Ikhlaas
(Kulhowallah).

8. Recite: Astagferullaah Rabbi Wa atoobo elaihe 100 times (i.e., I seek
pardon from God and ask for penitence from Him).

9. Recite: Allaahummal'an qatalatal Ameeril Momeneen 100 times (i.e., O
Allah! Thy malison upon the assassin of Ameerul Moineneen Ali ibne Abi Talib).

10. Give Sadqa/charity

11. Recite Dua Nudba http://www.duas.org/nudba.htm Remember Imam e zamana

[IslamCity] QUALITY OF LIFE - WHOSE RIGHT IS ?

2005-10-26 Thread Bashir Abid
Dear FriendsSalaam

The following article is published in the daily Arab
Times Kuwait on October 24, 2005. I found it very
inspiring and thought provoking. The author has
beautifully advocated the right to a better quality of
life but not for a particular class or person in the
society. This right should be guaranteed by The State
for every citizen without any discrimination. Indeed,
its a stupendous task and not possible for the human
intellect to carry it alone. The prevailing imbalances
in all civil societies and the widening gulf between
the rich and poor is a clear proof of the futility and
failure of human intellect. So far, we could not
devise a system which could eliminate or at least
reduce the intensity of class struggle which is
crushing none but the weak and poor.

For this very reason, as the author has rightly said,
we need divine guidance which is available only in the
Quran. The Quranic principles mentioned in this
article form the basis of a stable and progessive
society. Read and enjoy !

Bashir Abid

Quality of life

Assalaam A’laikum! If it is taken as fact that all of
life is a struggle for survival then it is equally a
struggle to survive in style. All of humanity strives
instinctually to provide the best quality of life for
itself and secure, if possible, even better for
posterity. It matters not whether one is born in
poverty or in the lap of luxury; the biological drive
to succeed is imprinted in every infant. This
imperative has no religion, knows no country
boundaries, or ethnic bias. In fact, one can argue
that all these factors are arbitrary, learned
behaviors that in the end do not really deflect an
individual from that basic need to improve his quality
of life. He may use these factors to his advantage,
but these things do not really sway him from
subjectively obtaining his desires. Granted, as humans
mature, the very substance of what one deems essential
to quality of life, be it money, power, or fame to use
three very obvious examples, can differ from person to
person, but the attainment of one is also linked to
the fulfillment of other areas in life.

For example, no actor strives to be in multi-million
dollar films only to live in a mud hut. Similarly, the
president of even the most tiny speck in the ocean
will work to expand his influence as wide as he
possibly can, through the media or the business
sector. If you take an individual as a model for a
whole nation, then it is obvious that the motivations
of most nations as also to create the highest quality
of life for its citizens, current and the future
generations. And like individuals, while a nation may
be shaped by various social, religious, and
geographical factors, the policies governments make
are still just as self serving and emotionally based
as those of its populace when dealing with each other
one on one. They may try to minimize the negative
effects of their behavior on others, but in the end,
as long as they get what they want, most people don’t
think beyond fulfilling their needs.

As long as their quality of life is secure, no price
is too high. So hundreds die in a bomb explosion
because certain individuals are convinced violence
against innocents will get them what they want.
Developed countries dump industrial and electronic
waste in poor nations to keep the environment cleaner
for their citizens, regardless of what that waste will
do to the people and environment of the receiving
nation. Perhaps most individuals would be appalled at
the lengths their governments or random vigilantes
will go to obtain their goals, but at a loss to
suggest a system whereby everyone would come out a
winner. In a dispute, both parties could equally
benefit from it with harm done to no one. Our very
nature makes it impossible to see how such a solution
is probable. Surely, in any conflict, someone must
back down, lose, or compromise?

Philosophers, thinkers, and great minds throughout the
centuries have given much thought to the solution of
this dilemma. Thousands of theories have been
formulated for all mankind to, if not unite, then, at
the very least, do each other no harm and still
progress. But human judgment, while providing a
temporary panacea, can be biased, self-centered, and
quickly outdated. On the other hand, divine guidance
is balanced, objective, and eternal. In the Holy
Quran, God has described a system which is equally
beneficial to all, and excludes no one. This guide
eliminates the prevailing method whereby one party
advances and progresses at the cost of the rest. In
essence, it is a set of values and disciplines an
individual or nation should follow to ensure not only
your quality of life, but also improve the lives of
those around you. Some of these Quranic principles are
outlined below; the corresponding verses are noted.

1. Foremost of all the values is the respect for other
human beings. All humanity is one nation (25:69) God
has made all human beings worthy of respect (17:70)

US to Use Mehlis Report to Cow Syrian Regime:
  Experts

"They are tightening the noose
around Damascus," said Ashal.
  By Ahmed Fathy, IOL Staff
  CAIRO, October 22, 2005 (IslamOnline.net) – Arab experts
expect the US to use the UN report implicating senior Syrian officials in
the assassination of former Lebanese premier Rafiq Al-Hariri to cow the
  Syrian regime.
"This will further tighten the noose around Damascus,"
Abdullah Al-Ashal, a former assistant to the Egyptian foreign minister and
an international law expert, told IslamOnline.net.
"The US will now step its pressures further to shake the
Syrian regime to its foundation in order to get it under its
  thumb."
German judge Detlev Mehlis, leading an international team
investigating the massive bomb blast that killed Hariri and 20 others in
Beirut in February, said he found "converging evidence" of Syrian and
Lebanese involvement and accused Damascus of blocking and misleading the
  investigation.
The 53-page report, released in New York on Thursday, October
20, said the probe was still incomplete.
In an accompanying letter to the report, UN Secretary-General
Kofi Annan extended the mission of the team until December 15.
US President George Bush asked the UN Friday, October 21, for
  an "immediate action" against Syria.
Immediately rejected the findings as "politically biased,"
Syria accused Mehlis of preparing a report to underpin Washington's
  rhetorical assault on the country.
"It looks really as if Mehlis was trying his best to get
information linking Syrian and Lebanese to the killing rather than find an
answer to the key question: who assassinated Hariri?" said
  Ashal.
  Sanctions

"The best way to handle the
situation is to lead the Syrian regime by the nose not to oust it,"
said Beni.
The Egyptian expert expected the US to push for
international sanctions on Syria and the setting up of an international
tribunal to try implicated Syrian officials, especially after some of them
  had been named by Mehlis.
An unedited version of the UN report said Syrian
President Bashar Al-Assad's brother Maher and brother-in-law, Maj. Gen.
Asef Shawkat, were among a group of Syrian and Lebanese officials who
"decided to assassinate" Hariri in mid-September 2004 and then planned the
murder during a series of meetings in Damascus.
Those names were edited out of the final
  document.
Ashaal, however, ruled out a US military action
against Syria, opposed by heavyweight Russia and China.
"The US wouldn’t risk a new military adventure and
would focus now how to weaken the regime," he said.
But Qasim Qasir, a Lebanese political analyst, said
  military action remains an option.
"The report is in effect creating an optimal war
atmosphere for the wartime Bush administration," he said.
  Newsweek recently
reported that the military was considering plans to conduct special
operations inside Syria, using small covert teams for cross-border
  intelligence gathering.
  Bargain
Akram Al-Beni, a Syrian opposition journalist,
forecast a "bargain" between Washington and Damascus to ease the
  tensions.
"The Americans see eye to eye with the Israelis and
the Europeans that the best way is to lead the Syrian regime by the nose
not to oust it," he said.
Al-Beni maintained that the US fears that toppling the
Syrian regime might put the Islamists at the helm, which harms its
  interests and Israel's.
"The only way out for the regime is to entrench
democracy, de-muzzle the press and unleash freedoms."
Ali Al-Amin, a Lebanese political analyst, said the US
does not have an "alternative" to the Assad regime.
"Washington would, therefore, lay more pressures on
Syria to give concessions and serve the US interests in the region," he
  expected.
Citing senior US and Arab officials, The Times
newspaper reported on Saturday, October 15, that the Bush administration
has offered Syria normal ties in swap for cooperation over Iraq, Lebanon
and Mideast peace, a British newspaper reported on Saturday, October
  15.
The deal hinges on full cooperation with the UN
inquiry, an end to alleged recruiting, funding and training of volunteers
to join the resistance in Iraq as well as an end to support for Lebanon ’s
  Hezbollah and Palestinian resistance groups.

[IslamCity] Imams of the past

2005-10-26 Thread brother_farrukh
Assalam alaikum,

In an age when many of us are faced with the oddest of imams in our
mosques, the following advert for the Imam of the Grand Mosque of
Istanbul by Sultan Suleman who ruled the Ottoman Empire between 1520
and 1566, should show us how standards have slipped in recent generations.

1. To have mastered the languages of Arabic, Latin, Turkish and Persian

2. To have mastered the Quran, the Bible and the Torah

3. To be a scholar in Shariah and Fiqh

4. To have mastered physics and mathematics upto teaching level

5. To be a master of chivalry, archery, dueling and the arts of jihad

6. To be of a handsome countenance

7. To have a strong melodious voice

[Al-Ahran newspaper, Sept 22nd, 1986;cited in Emel, Oct 2005]

How many of the above has your local mosque's imam met?

May Allah Almighty have mercy and guide us all, ameen.

[IslamCity] Give your fellow Muslims their rights

2005-10-26 Thread MUHAMMAD YAMEEN

Mohammed A [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Abu Hurayrah (radhiyallaahu 'anhu - may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam - may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "The rights ofa Muslim upon their fellowMuslim are six." It was said, "And what are they Oh Messenger of Allaah?" He replied, "When you meet them, givethem the greeting of peace, when they invite you, respond totheir invitation, when they seek your advice, advise them sincerely, when they sneeze and praise Allaah, supplicate for mercy upon them, when theyfall ill, visit them, and whenthey die followthem (i.e. his funeral)." MuslimThe First Right:
"When you meet them, givethem the greeting of peace." For verily the greeting of peace is a cause of love one another, which results in producing faith (Al-Eemaan), which results in the person entering the Paradise. This is as Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "By the one in Whose Hand is my soul, you all will not enter into the Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love each other. Shall I not direct you to something that if you do it, you will love each other? Spread the greeting of peace amongst yourselves." The greeting of peace is from the virtuous characteristics of Islaam. For verily each of the two people who meet each other supplicates for the other for safety from evils, and mercy, and blessing that brings about every good. And what follows this is a cheerful face and appropriate words of greeting which
result in unity and love, and it removes feelings of estrangement and cold disassociation. Thus, giving the greeting of peace is the right of the Muslim, and it is obligatory upon the person who is greeted to return greeting with a similar greeting or one that is better than it. And the best of the people are those who start the greeting of peace first. The Second Right:
"Whenthey invite you, respond totheir invitation." This means that when he invites you with an invitation to some food and drink, then fulfill the request of your brother who has drawn near to you and honored you with the invitation. Respond to his invitation (i.e. accept it), unless you have an excuse. The Third Right:
His statement, "And when they seek your advice, advise them sincerely." This means that if he seeks consultation with you regarding some action, as to whether he should do it or not, then advise him with that which you would like for yourself. Thus, if the action is something that is beneficial in all aspects, then encourage him to do that, and if it is something harmful, then warn him against it. And if the action contains both benefit and harm, then explain that to him and weigh the benefits against the harms. Likewise, if he consults with you concerning some dealing with someone among the people, or whether he should marry a woman off to someone, or whether he should marry someone, then extend your pure and sincere advice to him, and deal with him from the view point of what you would do for you own self. And avoid deceiving him in any matter of these things. For verily whoever deceives the Muslims, then he is not of them, and indeed he has
left off the obligation of being sincere and advising. And this sincerity and advising is absolutely obligatory, however it becomes more emphasized when the person seeks your advice and he requests from you that you give him a beneficial opinion. For this reason the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) specifically mentioned it in this important situation.

The Fourth Right:
"And when they sneeze and praise Allaah, then pray for mercy upon them." This is due to the fact that sneezing is a favor from Allaah, in the expelling of this congested air that is blocked in certain parts of the body of the human being. Allaah makes it easy for this air to have a passage out where it can exit, and thus the sneezing person feels relief. Thus, the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) legislated that the person praise Allaah for this favor, and he legislated for his (Muslim) brother to say to him, "May Allaah have mercy upon you." He also commanded the person who sneezed to answer his (Muslim) brother by saying to him, "May Allaah guide you and set right your affairs." Therefore, whoever does not praise Allaah, then he does not deserve for others to pray for mercy upon him, and in this case he cannot blame anyone except himself. For he is the one who has caused himself to lose the two blessings: the blessing of praising
Allaah, and the blessing of his brother's supplication for him that is a result of the praising. The Fifth Right:
His statement, "And when they fall ill, visit them." Visiting the sick is from the rights of the Muslim, and especially for the person who has a highly stressed and emphasized right upon you, like the relative, and the friend, and so forth. It is from the best of the righteous deeds. And whoever visitstheir fellowMuslim, they remain
