[IslamCity] Jews and Freemasons controlled war on Iraq, says No 10 adviser By Toby Helm Courtesy Telegraph 12/092005

2006-03-31 Thread Abdul Wahid Osman Belal

Jews and Freemasons controlled war on Iraq, says No 10 adviserBy Toby Helm(Filed: 12/09/2005) Tony Blair decided to wage war on Iraq after coming under the influence of a "sinister" group of Jews and Freemasons, a Muslim barrister who advises the Prime Minister has claimed. Ahmad Thomson, from the Association of Muslim Lawyers, said Mr Blair was the latest in a long line of politicians to have been influenced by the group which saw the attack on Saddam Hussein as a way to control the Middle East. A Government spokesman
confirmed last night that ministers and officials consulted Mr Thomson on issues concerning Muslims but refused to be drawn on his views. "We talk to a lot of people, including many whose views we do not necessarily agree with," she said. Mr Thomson said: "Pressure was put on Tony Blair before the invasion. The way it works is that pressure is put on people to arrive at certain decisions. It is part of the Zionist plan and it is shaping events." Mr Thomson wrote a book in 1994 in which he said Freemasons and Jews controlled the governments of Europe and America and described the claim that six million Jews died in the Holocaust as a "big lie". In The Next World Order, Mr Thomson, a Muslim convert who was born Martin Thomson in Rhodesia, wrote: "When the majority of people in a predominantly Christian society cease to worship God, the result is fascism. "When the people in a predominantly Jewish society cease to
worship God, the result is either communism or capitalism. A predominantly Christian society is concerned primarily with establishing a political ideology, whilst a predominantly Jewish society is concerned primarily with establishing an economic system." This, he suggested, led to the rise of Adolf Hitler. Mr Thomson, who was called to the bar in 1979, wrote: "The fascism of Hitler was the Christian element in the increasingly "Jewish" environment in which he and his followers found themselves." He also wrote that the Jews have no right to live in "the Holy Land" because they are not a pure race and therefore not the true biblical Israelites and that Saddam was used as an excuse for US troops - "including thousands of Jews" - to occupy Saudi Arabia. A Government source said: "It is by talking to people with varying views that we find out what the range of opinions is. It doesn't mean we agree with what they are
saying." Leader: Conspiracy theory © Copyright of Telegraph Group Limited 2006. Terms & Conditions of

What Clash of Civilizations?

Why religious identity isn't destiny.

By Amartya Sen
Posted Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at 6:02 AM ET

This essay is adapted from the new book Identity and Violence , published by Norton.

That some barbed cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed could
generate turmoil in so many countries tells us some rather important things
about the contemporary world. Among other issues, it points up the intense
sensitivity of many Muslims about representation and derision of the prophet in
the Western press (and the ridiculing of Muslim religious beliefs that is taken
to go with it) and the evident power of determined agitators to generate the
kind of anger that leads immediately to violence. But stereotyped
representations of this kind do another sort of damage as well, by making huge
groups of people in the world to look peculiarly narrow and unreal.

The portrayal of the prophet with a bomb in the form of a hat
is obviously a figment of imagination and cannot be judged literally, and the
relevance of that representation cannot be dissociated from the way the
followers of the prophet may be seen. What we ought to take very seriously is
the way Islamic identity, in this sort of depiction, is assumed to drown, if
only implicitly, all other affiliations, priorities, and pursuits that a Muslim
person may have. A person belongs to many different groups, of which a religious
affiliation is only one. To see, for example, a mathematician who happens to be
a Muslim by religion mainly in terms of Islamic identity would be to hide more
than it reveals. Even today, when a modern mathematician at, say, MIT or
Princeton invokes an "algorithm" to solve a difficult computational
problem, he or she helps to commemorate the contributions of the ninth-century
Muslim mathematician Al-Khwarizmi, from whose name the term algorithm is
derived (the term "algebra" comes from the title of his Arabic
mathematical treatise "Al Jabr wa-al-Muqabilah"). To concentrate only
on Al-Khwarizmi's Islamic identity over his identity as a mathematician would
be extremely misleading, and yet he clearly was also a Muslim. Similarly, to
give an automatic priority to the Islamic identity of a Muslim person in order
to understand his or her role in the civil society, or in the literary world,
or in creative work in arts and science, can result in profound
misunderstanding.

The increasing tendency to overlook the many identities that
any human being has and to try to classify individuals according to a single
allegedly pre-eminent religious identity is an intellectual confusion that can
animate dangerous divisiveness. An Islamist instigator of violence against
infidels may want Muslims to forget that they have any identity other than
being Islamic. What is surprising is that those who would like to quell that
violence promote, in effect, the same intellectual disorientation by seeing
Muslims primarily as members of an Islamic world. The world is made much more
incendiary by the advocacy and popularity of single-dimensional categorization
of human beings, which combines haziness of vision with increased scope for the
exploitation of that haze by the champions of violence.

A remarkable use of imagined singularity can be found in
Samuel Huntington's influential 1998 book The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of the World
Order. The difficulty with Huntington's approach begins with his system
of unique categorization, well before the issue of a clash—or
not—is even raised. Indeed, the thesis of a civilizational clash is
conceptually parasitic on the commanding power of a unique categorization along
so-called civilizational lines, which closely follow religious divisions to
which singular attention is paid. Huntington
contrasts Western civilization with "Islamic civilization,"
"Hindu civilization," "Buddhist civilization," and so on.
The alleged confrontations of religious differences are incorporated into a
sharply carpentered vision of hardened divisiveness.

In fact, of course, the people of the world can be classified
according to many other partitions, each of which has some—often
far-reaching—relevance in our lives: nationalities, locations, classes,
occupations, social status, languages, politics, and many others. While
religious categories have received much airing in recent years, they cannot be
presumed to obliterate other distinctions, and even less can they be seen as
the only relevant system of classifying people across the globe. In
partitioning the population of the world into those belonging to "the
Islamic world," "the Western world," "the Hindu
world," "the Buddhist world," the divisive power of
classificatory priority is implicitly used to place people firmly inside a
unique set of rigid boxes. Other divisions (say, between the rich and the poor,
between members of different classes and occupations, between people of
different politics, between distinct nationalit

[IslamCity] Blair's visit to Indonesia leaves the students in doubts and double standards of West.

2006-03-31 Thread Shaikh Hyder

Indonesia PM given rough ride by high school students Matthew Tempest and agenciesThursday March 30, 2006 Tony Blair visits a boarding school in Jakarta. Photograph: Jefrey Aries/Getty Images   Tony Blair was met with a barrage of calls to withdraw from Iraq as he toured Indonesia to promote better links with the world's largest Muslim country. The prime minister, on the final day of his tour of the southern hemisphere, issued a joint statement with the Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyon, promising greater trade links,
school twining and joint counter-terrorism messages. But the PM also met a delegation of moderate Muslim leaders who called on him to pull British troops out of Iraq, and was given a rough ride at a question-and-answer session with high school students.     Welcomed by pupils as he witnessed displays of martial arts and dancing and heard the girls school band serenade him with John Lennon's Imagine, Mr Blair's visit to the Pondok Pesantren Darunnajah, an Islamic boarding school twinned with the Holy Family School in Keighley, West Yorkshire, took a different turn when he took questions. He was asked how
he would feel if he was an Iraqi civilian and what he was doing to resolve the Israel/Palestinian dispute. The prime minister told them: "I want to say, as someone from the Christian faith, that I believe that people of different faiths can live together in harmony and peace." He then faced his first question on the recent row over a Luton schoolgirl forbidden from wearing full Islamic dress to class. He was asked what British rules were. Mr Blair replied: "We leave it up to the individual school, some schools permit it, some do not but we let the final decision be with the school. There are different views in my country about this." Another student then asked if he would persuade his "best friend" the US president, George Bush, to stop the war in Iraq. Mr Blair, dressed in a white open neck shirt and slacks in sweltering heat and humidity replied: "I think we will not agree about Iraq and the decision to remove the government there but there is a
process now on Iraq for the people to vote their government in. "In Iraq today they have got the right to vote, and in Afghanistan, and whatever we thought about the original decision to remove Saddam, today we should work with the United Nations and other countries to make sure people have the same rights as the people in the UK and you have here." Another student then asked: "How would you feel if you were an Iraqi civilian?" who had had relatives killed in the conflict. Mr Blair replied: "One of the most important things if we are to have this understanding between us is that people try to understand the other point of view. "You feel very strongly that what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan was wrong. I understand that. "But in those countries now people can vote and their government should decide what's right and what is wrong." He went on: "You might say Iraqi Muslims want this, I might say they want that." But the best test of what the
people truly wanted was how they voted. Mr Blair went on: "You have a view of America which is not a view I share. We have got to see how we build a bridge of understanding between the West and the Muslim world. "That doesn't mean we always agree but we understand why we disagree. That's the important thing so that in the end even if we do disagree we never distrust or hate each other." He was then tackled on the Middle East peace process and urged to ask the new Israeli government to resolve the issue. The prime minister replied: "I agree with you. There's no more important issue than to bring peace between Israel and Palestine. "This has been difficult but I will try to do my best to ensure we can bring peace there." At Mr Blair's earlier visit to New Zealand he was picketed by anti-war protestors and today in Jakarta there were also protests against his visit, this time from an Islamic group. After his meeting with Mr Yudhoyono, Mr
Blair said the two nations would "work closely" on ways to combat international terror, and invited the president to visit the UK in return. Mr Blair then met five moderate Islamic leaders who urged him to withdraw British troops from Iraq and talk to the recently elected Hamas government in Palestine. Din Syamsudin, leader of the country's second largest Muslim group Muhammadiah, said: "We told him to withdraw his troops from Iraq because the occupation is only promoting more radicalism and new acts of terrorism." Downing Street had billed the visit as the "right time" to repair relations. Mr Blair's official spokesman said: "It's the right place because Indonesia is the third largest democracy in the world, right people because it's the largest Muslim country in the world, with 210 million Muslims, right because under its current president it is not only committed to democracy but also to clean

Assalamu alaikum rahmatu Allah wa barakatu. Recently I have been having a big problem. I was wondering if someone could give me advice on this. I am scared to go out of my home. Maybe it sounds stupid but I have been getting the evil eye so bad I almost get like a panic. Just the other day I was walking my baby in the stroller with my friend when a man driving by in a car yelled a rude comment to me. People give me aweful looks and are rude to me. Alhomdulilah I wear hijab. My husband tells me "I don't want to hear it" when I tell him about it. I just don't know what to. I live in the U.S. I can't just stay in the house all the time, but what should I do? You brothers wouldn't believe the way we sisters get treated sometimes. Subhana Allah. Assalamu alaikum rahmatu Allah wa barakatu.

Islamophobia at Downing Street

Tony Blair's Bipolarity

By MICHAEL CARMICHAEL

This week, Tony Blair launched a scathing ideological attack on
Islamism. Describing the conflict between Islamism and the world as
a, "battle for modernity," he quoted the conservative American
historian, Samuel Huntington, in order to refute him. Contrasting his
interpretation of a "conflict about civilisation" in a historical
chiaroscuro with Huntington's "conflict of civilisations," Blair
blasted Islamism as the fountainhead of the world's escalating level
of ultra-violence.

Promising to make further keynote speeches to address the Israel-
Palestine conflict in the Middle East, Blair sought to defend the
pointed attacks on Islamic fundamentalism by George Bush and
Christopher Hitchens as the raison d'etre for the war in Iraq. In his
latest lamentation on the exclusively Islamic sources of ulta-
violence, terrorism and war, Blair echoed the mantras of the coterie
of deeply Islamophobic neoconservative intellectuals who emerged from
the right-wing witches' cauldron of Leo Stein at the University of
Chicago.

Blair's diatribe was the performance of a committed idealist, a
demagogue mesmerized by his own ideology and not that of an
intellectual, an academic, a mainstream politician or a statesman.
Blair inhabits that shadowy region of Christianity that sees itself
as totally separate and apart from the other faiths stemming from the
house of Abraham: Judaism and Islam. In Blair's vision of
Christianity, there are no Muslims who accept the messianic status of
Jesus; no Christians who launch terrorist atrocities and no Jewish
terrorists, either.

In the mind of Tony Blair, the trouble with world terror stems
exclusively from the ideology and culture of Islamic fundamentalism.
In Blair's deeply bipolar world, Christianity and Judaism are
blameless for the rising tide of terror.

In Blair's definition of terror, the lynchings of the Christian
Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, the terror bombings of Oklahoma, the
brutal beatings of Muslims in Britain, the extra-judicial killings of
Palestinians, the Christian bombings of pharmaceutical factories in
Sudan and the Israeli military assassinations of Palestinians simply
do not exist.

His selective vision of the world is troubling for it emanates from a
double standard. Fundamentalist Christian terror does not exist for
Blair. Fundamentalist Judaic terror does not exist for Blair. Whether
Blair is capable of discerning fundamentalist Hindu terror is--at
this point in time--unknown.

The question arises: Is Tony Blair Islamophobic? Islamophobia has
emerged as the anti-Semitism of the twenty-first century. Blair
recently gave an interview in which he revealed his inordinate
commitment to Christianity. Explaining his decision to wage war on
Iraq, Blair said that his religious beliefs had shaped his decision
to join forces with Bush's neoconservative juggernaut.

Much has been made of Blair's personal religious idiosyncrasy.
Married to a traditional Roman Catholic, Blair's solemn devotion to
religious orthodoxy has been exposed to the microscope of public
scrutiny. In 2004, a Roman Catholic priest was foolish enough to give
a press conference stating Blair's personal desire to convert to the
Church of Rome. Reliable witnesses have confirmed that Blair and Bush
pray together during their wartime summits. The extremist religious
ideology of Bush is well-established. His political partnership with
Blair is founded on much more than the special relationship between
Britain and America. These two men share a common faith in the
fundamental veracity of some of the most orthodox and conservative
attitudes in Christendom and apparently some of the most extreme
ones, as well.

Their's is a partnership that not only prays, but also preys together.

Praying together, Bush and Blair consistently prey on their common
enemy - the Islamic culture that has fostered what in their myopic
vision is pure "evil"--i.e. terror.

Their common myopia places the bombings launched by Christian
fundamentalists, the assassinations committed by Jewish
fundamentalists and the religious motivation of the tractor-driving
assassin who fractured the skull, severed the spine and crushed the
life out of Rachel Corrie outside of their narrowing cone of perception.

Their condition is simply a twin case of visual, optical and
intellectual bipolarity. In their world: Islam is evil. Christianity
is good. Judaism is invisible. But, does this intellectual bipolarity
make Blair Islamophobic? Is he, in fact, as bipolar in his reaction
to Islam as the anti-Semitic bigots of the last century?

To date, let it be noted that Blair has not called out in public for
the genocidal extermination of the entire Islamic population of the
world. Let it also be noted that Adolf Hi

Should an Apostate Be Put to
Death?

  Question

Respected scholars, as-salamu

he or she converts to another religion? Jazakum Allahu
khayran.

  Date

  Ahmad Kutty

  Topic
  Apostasy

  Answer

Wa`alaykum as-salamu wa
rahmatullahi wa
barakatuh.
In the Name of
Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and
thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His
Messenger.
Dear brother in Islam, thanks a lot for your question, which
reflects your care to have a clear view of the teachings of Islam.
Allah commands Muslims to refer to knowledgeable people to
learn more about the teachings of Islam.
It is absurd for
anyone to suggest that Islam advocates killing people who choose to
leave Islam. To kill anyone who chooses to follow a religion other
than Islam is against the fundamental teachings of the Qur'an.
Freedom of conscience is a fundamental principle of the Qur'an that
is clearly stated. Thus, if apostates cause no harm to the
Muslim community and do not call for spreading hostility towards
Islam, they should not to be punished; rather they should be advised
kindly and wisely to learn the truth about Islam.
In his response to
your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior
lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto,
Ontario, Canada, states the following:
Freedom of conscience
is one of the fundamental rights of humans enshrined in the Qur'an;
it is therefore, absurd for anyone to
suggest that Islam allows putting people to death just because they
convert to another religion.
Even a casual reader
of the Qur'an will not fail to be impressed by its emphasis on the
freedom of conscience as a cornerstone of its moral structure. To
cite a few verses as follows:
[There shall be no
compulsion in religion. Distinct has now become the right way from
[the wayof] error: hence, he
who rejects the powers of evil and believes in God has indeed taken
hold of a support most unfailing, which shall never give way: for
God is all-hearing, all-knowing] ( Al-Baqarah
2:256)
[If it had been your
Lord's will, all who are in the earth would have believed. Will you,
then, force the people to become believers?]
(Yunus
10:99)
[And if they surrender
themselves unto Him (i.e. God), they are on the right path; but if
they turn away – behold, thy duty (O Muhammad,) is no more than to
deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His
creatures.]
(Aal
`Imran
3:20)
[Hence, pay heed unto
God, and pay heed unto the Messenger, and be ever on your guard
[against evil]; and if you turn away, then know that Our Messenger's
only duty is a clear delivery of the message [entrusted to
him].] (Al-Ma'idah
5:92)
[But if they turn away
[from thee, O Prophet, know that] Wehave not sent thee to
be their keeper: thou art not bound to do more than deliver the
message [entrusted to thee] .] (Ash-Shura
42:48)
I should further state
that all of the moral teachings of the Qur'an are based on the
notion of moral responsibility, which entails the freedom of choice.
Therefore, to state that one must be put to death for choosing to
disbelieve would only undermine the entire moral edifice of the
Qur'an.
Furthermore, the
Qur'an does not allow anyone to harm those who are leaving in peace,
no matter what religion they hold on to. This principle has been
clearly stated in the Qur'an as follows:
[Thus, if they let you
be, and do not make war on you, and offer you peace, God d

[IslamCity] HIJABS - Some interesting facts

2006-03-31 Thread Showkat Ali

HIJABS   The author of this article "Observations on Hijab" is unknown. It is however, thought to be written by a brother. Funny as it is, there are a number of lessons to be learnt... It has been my personal observation that some Muslim
girls and women do not realise the significance of hijab. Hijab is Arabic for protection and cover. Some people put a lot of effort into their hijab, yet it serves No purpose. I am referring to the pointless hijab that some girls wear.      The first pointless hijab is referred to as the headband hijab. It is a band of fabric approximately 4 inches wide. It covers the back of the head and allows all the hair to be exposed. It doesn't serve much in terms of modesty but at least it comes in handy in case of an unexpected tennis match!      The second pointless
hijab is the dupatta, also known as the Saran wrap hijab. It covers all the hair, but it is totally transparent. Again, it doesn't serve much in terms of modesty, but it keeps the hair nice and fresh!      The third type of hijab is known as the Micky Mouse Hijab. It is when a girl wears a black scarf and tucks it behind her ear so that her ears stick out!      We now move on to my favourites The yo-yo hijabs: The first yo-yo hijab is the scarf that keeps falling down and needs to be constantly pulled back up up, down, up, down, just like a yo-yo!
The second yo-yo hijab is also referred to as the convertible hijab. This type of hijab is predominant at any type of social event, i.e. an Aqeeqah, Bismillah party, Ameen party, wedding, etc. This is when an Imam or Qari comes up to the microphone and starts to recite Qur'an. At this point, all the convertible hijabs come
up... until he says "SadaqAllahu Atheem." I'm not sure, but apparently in some cultures that translates to "OK sisters, you may take off your scarves. "I'm sure this may seem odd, but what's even funnier is when people do not anticipate the recitation of Qur'an at a social event and are forced to be creative and use accessories such as a
purse to cover one's hair. I was surprised to see a woman hold her purse over her head as "hijab"... as if the multitudes of men surrounding her are not a good enough reason to wear hijab, but some guy reciting du'a compels her to hold a purse over her head. Her friends were more creative... one friend used her dinner napkin.
I was also laughing when I saw the communal hijab- two or more girls dropped under one dinner napkin during the recitation of Qur'an. Her other friend was still more creative. She used her coffee saucer on the back of her head. I wasn't sure if it was hijab or Yamaka. I didn't know if she was a Muslim or a Jew. I felt like going up to her and saying "Salamu allaykum, sister."      And, people should remember that hijab is not just a protection from guys, but from a girls' nafs (ego) as well. It should prevent girls from having to spend hours in front of the mirror doing her hair. But, unfortunately, you see girls in front of the mirror for hours doing their hijab as they would do their hair, with all sorts of elaborate braids and the like. I wanted to go up to a sister and say "Is your hijab naturally curly?" I also felt compelled to go up to another girl and say "Pardon me, but is
your hijab naturally that colour or did you dye it"? Well the point is that some people make an effort to wear hijab but it is futile, because it is not fulfilling its purpose. It is like using an umbrella with holes in it. Hijab is used for protection from guys aswell as for the girl herself, and should not be used as an accessory or for beautifying one's self. Any way, that's it. If any one disagrees with me or is offended then you are disagreeing with the teachings of Allah Subhaanuhu wa Ta'ala.     Salaam Aleykum (may Allah protect you)

[IslamCity] FATWA ON WATCHING TV

2006-03-31 Thread Saba Khan
Fatwa # 14129 from United KingdomDate:

Title
The Ummah really needs a COMPLETE fatwa on tv so
that thereafter no one can complain:

Question
The Ummah really needs a COMPLETE fatwa on tv so
that thereafter no one can complain:

1. The issue of watching kafir tv: I know that is
completely haram

2. Issue of 'Muslim' tv - like a sword, it can be used
for good or bad - is it same with tv?

3. Is tv really picture making? I heard a fatwa of
Mufti Taqi Usmani that digital camera pics are ok as
long as no really hard copy pictures are printed - i.e
there thus hasn't been picture 'making'. so with an
image of tv - this isn't a hard copy tangible image
becuase it goes away when tv off? This is the most
important point in making a fatwa of tv.

4. even if tv isn't picture making and thus haram in
that sense, what about Allahs verse -tell believers to
lower their gaze. How can people watch tv by lowering
gaze? you cant control men watching only men and women
watching only women. Must women equally lower their
gaze to men?

5. Use of tv systems for benefit - e.g security and
revealing of diffuclt state of Muslims round world
etc.

Answer
It is totally Haraam (forbidden) to watch ‘Kafir
TV’ or ‘Muslim TV’. The reason for ‘Kaafir TV’ being
Haraam is obvious. Pictures of nude males and females
are portrayed, music is played in the background,
immoral acts are viewed and countless of other immoral
acts are displayed, let alone an ordinary Muslim. Even
the Kuffaar of today admit to the harms of TV and the
filth that is displayed on it.

Muslim TV is also Haraam because strange [non-Mahram]
men and women are viewed as well as Muslim TV contains
pictures of animate objects. Allah Ta’ala has
commanded the men and women to lower their gazes and
prohibited us from looking at the opposite gender.
Allah Ta’ala states in the Qur’aan, ‘Say, O Muhammad,
to the believing men that they should lower their
gazes.’ Thereafter, in the next Aayat, Allah Ta’ala
states, ‘Say, O Muhammad, to the believing women that
they should lower their gazes.

Together with that, to produce pictures or images, be
it digital or hard copy is Haraam. There is no
difference regarding pictures or images portrayed on
TV, digital camera or hard copy pictures. To produce
such pictures and to view such pictures is totally
Haraam. The argument used that the image goes away
when the TV is switched off therefore, it should not
be Haraam is baseless. The fact that it is an image or
picture makes it Haraam. There are extremely severe
warnings in the Hadith regarding picture-making.

1. It is narrated on the authority of Abu Talha
[radhiallaahu anhu] that Rasulullah [sallallaahu
alayhi wasallam] said, ‘The Malaaikah [angels] do not
enter a house wherein pictures are displayed.’

2. It is narrated on the authority of ibn Umar
[radhiallaahu anhu] that Rasulullah [sallallaahu
alayhi wasallam] said, ‘Those who create pictures will
be punished on the day of judgment. They will be
ordered to bring to life those pictures which they
created.’ (Muslim Hadith5501)

3. It is narrated on the authority of ibn Abbaas
[radhiallaahu anhu] that Rasulullah [sallallaahu
alayhi wasallam] said, ‘Every person who is involved
in picture making will be thrown in Jahannam (hell)
and each picture which he created will be brought to
life and will torment this person in Jahannum.’ (Ibid)

4. It is narrated on the authority of ibn Abbaas
[radhiallaahu anhu] that Rasulullah [sallallaahu
alayhi wasallam] said, ‘Whoever creates a picture of
animate object in this world, he will be ordered to
bring it to life whereas he will not be able to do
so.’ (Ibid)

5. It is narrated on the authority of ibn Mas’ood
[radhiallaahu anhu] that Rasulullah [sallallaahu
alayhi wasallam] said, ‘People who will be given the
most severe punishment on the day of judgment will be
those who were involved in picture making.’ (Ibid)

>From the abovementioned narrations, the severity of
the sin of picture making is clear. One should stay
far away as possible from anything related to
pictures. Although it may be argued that ‘Muslim TV’
holds a lot of good in it, for example, recitation of
the Qur’aan, Islamic discourses and prayers being
broadcasted from the holy Musjids, etc. nevertheless,
there is more evil and wrong in it than good. The
first evil in it is viewing pictures of animate
objects which is impermissible in the Shari’ah.

The Qur’aan has laid down the general principle that
that item which holds good and bad or benefit and harm
and the bad is more than the good, then that item will
be declared Haraam in the Shari’ah. This is the very
same reason why wine was made Haraam. Wine in itself
holds many benefits as well as many harms because of
wine holding more evil and harm than the good it
contains, it was declared Haraam in the Shari’ah.

The same law applies to ‘Muslim TV’ apparently it may
seem good as it contains the recitatio

[IslamCity] Muslim Heritage: Dams

2006-03-31 Thread brother_farrukh
Peace be upon you,

"Historians of civil engineering have almost totally ignored the
Muslim period, and in particular historians of dam building, such as
there have been, either make no reference to Muslim work at all, or
even worse, claim that during the Umayyad and Abbasid times dam
building, irrigation and other engineering activities suffered sharp
decline and eventual extinction. Such a view is both unjust and untrue"
[Norman Smith, History of Dams, 1971]

Dams are some of the largest civil engineering structures ever built
and they play a vital role in civilization. Without dams more floods
would ravage lands, irrigation wouldn't have been as large-scale and
today we woldn't have hydro-electric plants pmping ot power. Without
dams and their reservoirs, life as we know it wouldn't be the same
because of the major impact they have had on economic and social life.

For thousands of years engineers have been trying to control water
with various types of dams that have to hold a raging torrent and
provide water in a dry spell. There are arch dams, buttress dams,
embankment dams to name just a few, and where to put which depends on
factors like the shape of the valley and the bedrock of the river.
These considerations are nothing new as the Mslims built many dams in
a rich variety of structures and forms.

>From studying the river, its flow and surrounding topography, these
medieval engineers decided whether a dam should be arched or straight,
thick or thin, or have deep or shallow foundations as all these
considerations influenced the most efficient ater storage.

The design and aesthetics of the most impressive were built by the
Aghlabids of Tunisia in the 9th century. Their remains are still
preserved, attracting the curiosity of thousands of tourists today.

Al-Bakri an 11th century geographer and historian from Southern Spain
wrote about one of them. He said, "..it is circular in form and of
enormous size. In the center rises an octagonal tower covered by a
pavilion with four doors. A long series of arcades of arches resting
one upon the other ends on the south side of the reservoir".

In this region of Tunisia there were over two hundred and fifty
reservoirs with two basins each. One was used for decantation, the
separating of sediment from the water, and the other was a reserve.
Sometimes on the larger scheme, there was a third one for drawing water.

In Iran is the Kebar dam, the oldest arched dam known and about 700
years old. This dam, like many, had a core of rubble masonry set in
mortar.. The mortar was made from lime crushed with the ash of a local
desert plant, making it strong, hard and impervious to cracking.

Then there was the impressively curved Qusaybah dam which was 30
meters high and 205 meters long. It was built near Medina in Saudi Arabia.

In today's Afghanistan, three dams were completed by King Mahmoud of
Ghaznah in the 11th century near his capital city. One named after him
was located 100 kilometers south of Kabul. It was 32 meters high and
220 meters long.

Half of the dams constructed had a flood overflow at one end and many
had a downstream training wall to guide the spilled water to a safe
distance from the dams foot.

Dam construction in Muslim spain was immense and the masonry they used
was a type of cement that was harder than stone itself, so they needed
hardly any repairs in a thousand years.

Each of the eight dams on the Turia river have foundations that go
fifteen feet into the riverbed, with further support provided by rows
of wooden piles. The solid foundations was due to the rivers erratic
behavior in times of flooding its flows were a hundred times greater
than normal. The dams had to be able to resist the battering of water,
stones, rocks and trees, which they did and now over 1000 years later,
they still meet the irrigation needs of Valencia, requiring no
addition to the system.

The dam on the river Segura, in the Murcia region of Spain, shows how
the Muslims understood location and that the nature of the local
environment mattered. The height of this dam was only 25 feet, but the
thickness of its base was between 150 and 125 feet. This was because
of the softness and weakness of the rivers bed, and its design
prevented the dam from sliding along. The water flowing over the crest
initially fell vertically through a height of 13 to 17 feet onto a
level platform, then ran the length of the dam. This dissipated the
energy of the water spilling over the crest. The overflow then ran to
the foot of the face. In this way the whole dam acted as a spillway
which reduced the risk of disturbing the downstream foundations.

The city of Cordoba, on the river Guadalquiver, probably has the
oldest surviving dam in the country. According to the 12th century
geographer al-Idrisi it was built of qibtiyya stone and included
marble pillars. The dame follows a zigzag course across the river, a
shape which shows that the builders were aiming at a long crest in
order to increase

[IslamCity] URGENT PRESS RELEASE

2006-03-31 Thread G.Waleed Kavalec

-- Forwarded message --

URGENT PRESS RELEASE

  Unscrupulous Newspaper Sting

-

Islam Channel can today reveal that it has been the target of an
unscrupulous newspaper sting using highly questionable methods.
The focus of the sting was Chief Executive Mohamed Ali and RESPECT MP
George Galloway.

Two men posing as wealthy Indian businessmen first contacted the
London-based channel last month saying they wanted to invest in the TV
station.  As with all such proposals, CEO Mohamed Ali, invited the
two into his head office to scrutinise their proposal and establish the
intentions which lay behind the offer.

During this meeting the two also expressed an interest in
helping financially the political party RESPECT headed by MP George
Galloway.  Another meeting was set up to include the Bow and
Bethnal Green MP who has been the target of international media
before.

It was during this meeting that both the MP and Mr Ali began to
suspect all was not what it seemed as their hosts talked about
terrorism, expressed potentially anti-semitic sentiments and views both
Mr Galloway and Mr Ali found offensive.

After a further investigation Islam Channel discovered the real
identity of one of the businessmen as News of the World journalist
Mazher Mahmood.  Mr Ali, Islam Channel CEO said: 'I am not a
naïve person, but as the head of the Islam Channel I don't expect to
be approached by 'fake sheikhs or dodgy dealers'.

'The Islam Channel is an honourable project with high ideals and
those who offer to help us come from eclectic backgrounds, but always
their intentions are honourable.  'I am still rather bemused as to
why this notorious investigative journalist should try and enveigle his
way into Islam Channel.  'We are an trying to build bridges of
understanding between the Muslim and non-Muslim world and between
faiths and cultures. I am deeply saddened that the News of the World
has chosen these troubled times to try and damage these aims.

'This elaborate sting was designed to besmirch the reputation of
this TV station, those who work for it and supporters of Islam
Channel.  'Our supporters come from many diverse political,
charitable and business backgrounds.  'Mazher Mahmood obviously
thought we would be an easy sting '! but he picked on the wrong target
this time' added Mr Ali who is now considering turning the tables on
the journalist who is obsessive about maintaining his own privacy.

Written into Mahmood's employment contract is a clause stating
that his photograph will never be published in the newspaper.  'I
am still deliberating whether to expose him now by using images which
are in the possession of Islam Channel and which reveal his full
identity,' added Mr Ali from Islam Channel's head office in Moorgate,
London.
