MEANING OF 'SHIRK' CHANGED

'Shirk' is a comprehensive term. Idol worship is its
simplest form. In fact, people worship idols because
they think these got the power to changes their
destiny. However, it is an inferior thinking of man.
God has created man as superior being among many of
His creatures (17:70). It is not proper for him to
submit to anyone who are either inferior to him (idols
or his lowly desires) or who are mortal beings like
him self (priest and rulers). Man should submit
himself to the authority of God alone. He is the
creator and He knows what the purpose of man's
creation is? (67:14). Therefore, no one could think
better than God what is best for man. When Quran says;
 authority belongs to God... (6:57) or when God
condemn 'Shirk' as the biggest and un-pardonable crime
(31:13;4:48), it does not mean that God dislikes
deities and asserts Himself as a sovereign. He is far
above emotions and far above what we associate with
Him. If man associates hundreds of deities, it does
not affect God's sovereignty in the universe.
Secondly, He Himself has condemned compulsion in
'Al-Deen' (2:256). So, how could He threat or force
human beings against their will, to follow a
particular path? Actually, these admonitions are meant
to inculcate the truth that man can accomplish his
goals by no other means except God's laws. He can
reach his destination by following God's path alone.
Therefore, the real 'shirk' is not the worship of
idols or deities but it is the following of paths
other than the one, which God has recommended. These
paths (in other words, various man-made systems)
misguide man and take him far away from his
destination (4:116). Values and principles in man-made
systems are not enough to guide man in the right
direction. By following man-made systems, he cannot
emancipate from animal-instincts and lowly desires; He
cannot rise to become a noble and dignified human
being. It is possible only by following the value
system of the Quran (28:85). It is stated in the
Quran: 

God wants to raise man to the exalted ranks of
humanity through the value system of the Quran. But,
man follows the earthly desires which eventually
brings him low to the position of beasts and worse.
(7:176). This downfall is exclusively attributed to
'Shirk' in another verse, which reads as follow;

Hunafaa lillahe ghaira Mushrikeena beh - Being true
in faith to God, and never assigning partners to Him -
Wa manyushrik billahe - if anyone assigns partners to
God - Fa ka ann ma kharra minusamai - he is as if he
had fallen from heavens - Fa takhtafh-o-tairo au
tahvee behir reeho fi makanin saheeq - and been
snatched up by birds, or the wind had swooped and
thrown him into a far-distant place. (22:31)

God's given value system grooms human personality. It
imparts enlightenment, and excellence of taste through
intellectual and aesthetic training. It provides him
protection against the spontaneous forces of nature
and the society.

Accordingly, we conclude that real 'Shirk' is to
follow values and principles, which are against the
Quran. The real 'Shirk' is to follow the systems,
which are based on non-Quranic values and principles.
Quran has emphatically stated:

La yushrik fi hukmehee ahada - God does not share His
Command (values  principles) with anyone whatsoever.
(18:26)

This definition of 'Shirk' is much more important and
practically related with the welfare of the society.
If understood rightly and taken care of, it would have
liberated the masses from the evil's systems, which
exploit national resources and man's labor to
safeguard the interests of privileged classes against
the common man's interests. The masses would have
never submitted to such systems because submission to
these man-made systems is no less a big crime than
'Shirk'. But the religious scholars did not pay due
attention on this concept and laid undeserved emphasis
in condemning idol's worship as a form of 'Shirk'.
They diverted the focus of attention of the people
from a dangerous and fatal form of 'Shirk' towards a
simple and harmless form of 'Shirk'. Consequently, as
earlier said, the Muslim masses can tolerate and bow
their heads before any evil ruler no matter how much
his rule is against the rule of God's Will; they can
live in any man-made system no matter how much its
values and principles are degraded and against the
noble values of the glorious Quran, but they would
never tolerate bowing before an idol. They hated
idol's worship like they hate pigs whereas idols has
no power either to harm or to benefit them. The
religion's opium has worked rightly on them. They
forgot their primary obligations to strive hard
against ignorance, poverty, and undemocratic values.
They never realized that idols of human desires are
worst than stone's idols. These noble ideas never
touched them but they dream to be known as
'Butshikan'. They have become the true embodiment of
what the Quran said in this verse: 

And most of them believe not in God without

It may sound like science fiction, but the prospect that suicide
bombers and hijackers could be made redundant by flying robots is a
real one, according to experts.

The technology for remote-controlled light aircraft is now highly
advanced, widely available -- and, experts say, virtually unstoppable.

Models with a wingspan of five metres (16 feet), capable of carrying
up to 50 kilograms (110 pounds), remain undetectable by radar.

And thanks to satellite positioning systems, they can now be
programmed to hit targets some distance away with just a few metres
(yards) short of pinpoint accuracy.

Security services the world over have been considering the problem for
several years, but no one has yet come up with a solution.

We are observing an increasing threat from such things as
remote-controlled aircraft used as small flying bombs against soft
targets, the head of the Canadian secret services, Michel Gauthier,
said at a conference in Calgary recently.

According to Gauthier, ultra-light aircraft, powered hang gliders or
powered paragliders have also been purchased by terrorist groups to
circumvent ground-based countermeasures.

On May 1 the US website Defensetech published an article by military
technology specialist David Hambling, entitled Terrorists' unmanned
air force.

While billions have been spent on ballistic missile defense, little
attention has been given to the more imminent threat posed by unmanned
air vehicles in the hands of terrorists or rogue states, writes Hambling.

Armed militant groups have already tried to use unmanned aircraft,
according to a number of studies by institutions including the Center
for Nonproliferation studies in Monterey, California, and the Center
for Arms Control, Energy and Environmental Studies in Moscow.

In August 2002, for example, the Colombian military reported finding
nine small remote-controlled planes at a base it had taken from the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

On April 11, 2005 the Lebanese Shiite militia group, Hezbollah, flew a
pilotless drone over Israeli territory, on what it called a
surveillance mission. The Israeli military confirmed this and
responded by flying warplanes over southern Lebanon.

Remote-control planes are not hard to get hold of, according to
Jean-Christian Delessert, who runs a specialist model airplane shop
near Geneva.

Putting together a large-scale model is not difficult -- all you need
is a few materials and a decent electronics technician, says Delessert.

In his view, if terrorists get hold of that, it will be impossible to
do anything about it. We did some tests with a friend who works at a
military radar base: they never detected us... if the radar picks
anything up, it thinks it is a flock of birds and automatically wipes it.

Japanese company Yamaha, meanwhile, has produced 95-kilogram
(209-pound) robot helicopter that is 3.6 metres (11.8 feet) long and
has a 256 cc engine.

It flies close to the ground at about 20 kilometres per hour (12 miles
per hour), nothing but an incredible stroke of luck could stop it if
it suddenly appeared in the sky above the White House -- and it is
already on the market.

Bruce Simpson, an engineer from New Zealand, managed to produce an
even more dangerous contraption in his own garage: a mini-cruise
missile. He made it out of readily available materials at a cost of
less than 5,000 dollars (4,000 euros).

According to Simpson's website

authorities forced him to shut down the project -- though only once he
had already finished making the missile -- under pressure from the
United States.

Eugene Miasnikov of the Center for Arms Control, Energy and
Environmental Studies in Moscow said these kinds of threats must be
taken more seriously.

To many people UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) may seem too exotic,
demanding substantial efforts and cost compared with the methods
terrorists frequently use, he said. But science and technology is
developing so fast that we often fail to recognise how much the world
has changed.

The program is aimed at identifying and tracking suspected terrorists, they said. The sources would talk only under a guarantee of anonymity because the NSA program is secret. Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden, nominated Monday by President Bush to become the director of the CIA, headed the NSA from March 1999 to April 2005. In that post, Hayden would have overseen the agency's domestic call-tracking program. Hayden declined to comment about the program. The NSA's domestic program, as described by sources, is far more expansive than what the White House has acknowledged. Last year, Bush said he had authorized the NSA to eavesdrop without warrants on international calls and international e-mails of people suspected of having links to terrorists
when one party to the communication is in the USA. Warrants have also not been used in the NSA's efforts to create a national call database. In defending the previously disclosed program, Bush insisted that the NSA was focused exclusively on international calls. As a result, domestic call records those of calls that originate and terminate within U.S. borders were believed to be private. Sources, however, say that is not the case. Customers' names, street addresses and other personal information are not being handed over as part of NSA's domestic program, the sources said. But the phone numbers the NSA collects can easily be cross-checked
with other databases to obtain that information. Don Weber, a senior spokesman for the NSA, declined to discuss the agency's operations. "Given the nature of the work we do, it would be irresponsible to comment on actual or alleged operational issues; therefore, we have no information to provide," he said. "However, it is important to note that NSA takes its legal responsibilities seriously and operates within the law." The White House would not discuss the domestic call-tracking program.
