to who ever sent me this email:

i read this email that has been sent to me and i must say that some of its 
contents i disagree with.
i am a muslim and proud of it, but some of the content in this email upsets 
me as a muslim, and that other people who are not muslims are reading this 
and getting the wrong impression about islam. this email puts alot of 
pressure on women but yet non on men.
i will not disagree with the hijab but i will say that there is no actual 
mention of it in the quran and the only part that speaks of something in 
this category could be interpreted in a million different ways. but i will 
say that i disagree with the statement that women should not dress like men 
since every culture and time has its own dress code. and there is no logical 
reason for it. and the statement of women making noise as they walk is an 
invite for attention is also disturbing to me, it gives me the idea that 
women should be non existent in order to get to heaven, and it gives me the 
impression that any kind natural behavior could be seen as some kind of 
invite to men which obviously would make me think that you are trying to 
make all men look like sex crazed pigs. further more the statement that 
women should not wear anything that resembles that of unbelievers is 
absolutely upsetting because as a muslim i care about the direct connection 
between me and god not what the community will interpret of the way i dress.

i mean no offense to anyone i am only stating my views because i care and 
because God gave me a brain to think with not just believe an email i 
received.

HIJAAB  BEAUTIFICATION:  by Dr Aboobakar Thwahir  Hijaab is an order from 
Allaah ( ) , whether one likes it or not, a woman has to accept and adopt 
it if she believes in Allaah ( )  and the last day. There is no excuse for 
not wearing the hijaab. Prophet's wives and children had adopted it, 
sahabi's families have adopted it, all pious women have accepted it. There 
is no compromise for the orders of Allaah ( ) . If one wants to enter 
jannah, she has to adopt it in this life.  One cannot get Paradise without 
accepting everything commanded to do.
   Islam is a complete system and code for human life for achieving success 
here and in the Hereafter life. It has prescribed certain rules for 
conducting our life towards realizing the same without which man cannot 
aspire to be amongst those who will gain the pleasure of Allaah ( )  and 
Eternal Paradise.  There are rules for our lives and on various subjects.  
These rules are given by the Shari' (law giver) Allaah ( )  and shown to us 
by Prophet Muhammad (sawa). These orders if implemented in our lives will 
ensure order, peace, discipline and satisfaction. Every mumin must know 
that this is temporary life and the Eternal life that which has yet to 
come, after our death.  We may have to sacrifice certain comforts, 
luxuries, desires, passions, conveniences, and freedom to obtain the 
Eternal success. The shaitan is always calling us towards lewdness and 
indecency and our womenfolk fall prey to this invitation. One who is 
careless about the other world will make several
  mistakes in this life. One has to see this life as temporary abode and do 
good deeds as if the life is going to end any time.  He should consider 
this world as permanent one for the purpose of amassing wealth and comforts 
so that he can use it leisurely.

   Allaah ( )  alone can prescribe Eternal laws for man and He is fully 
aware of our weaknesses.  Besides other rules, He has prescribed Islamic 
dress code for ensuring decency, chastity, purity, discipline, and 
civility.

   And say to the believing women:  that they should lower their gaze and 
guard their modesty. That they should not display their beauty and 
ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof, they should draw 
veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their 
husbands and their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons. (Qur'aan 
24:31)

   O Prophet, Tell thy wives and daughters and the believing women that 
they should cast their outer garments over their persons, that is most 
convenient that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allaah 
( )  is Oft forgiving, most merciful (Qur'aan 33:59). The Qur'aan says that 
Hijab is prescribed for women  so that they are recognized as modest women 
and this will be also prevent from being molested.

   She has to wear clothes covering her entire body and if possible, she 
should cover her face even, by nakab. Any attempt to display to attract the 
attention of  outsiders (na mehram) is haram. She should be modest and 
disciplined while going

A recent escalation of protests by pro-reform activists was met 
with increased police violence, Salonaz Sami reports 


This week witnessed another wave of arrests and police violence targeting 
rights activists protesting in support of reformist judges. On 7 May, 11 
activists, including four women, from the Egyptian Movement for Change (Kifaya), 
Youth for Change and Al-Karama Party were arrested. Three of the 11 were 
released the following day, leaving a total of 55 activists in detention 
according to Ahmed Ragheb, one of Kifaya's lawyers.
Twelve of the initial 47 -arrested two weeks ago- were set to stand before 
Bab Al-Khalq Preliminary Court in south Cairo for a renewal of their 15-day 
sentence issued by the General Prosecutor Maher Abdel-Wahed last week. The 
hearing was postponed to the next day. "Defence lawyers had called for activists 
to attend the renewal hearing as witnesses, but security forces didn't allow 
them to enter the building," lawyer Ahmed Seif Al-Islam told Al-Ahram Weekly. 

"We went to attend the hearing but they refused to allow us inside the 
court," said Aida Seif Al-Dawla, a human rights activist and a Kifaya member, 
adding that later on around 30 pro-reform activists -- including journalists, 
lawyers, and university professors -- were besieged by security forces for about 
five hours in the hot midday sun. "Then they pretended to have ended the siege, 
but those who tried to get out were rudely insulted, beaten and then arrested," 
she said. 
Seif Al-Islam -- whose 25-year-old son Alaa Seif, an award winning blogger, 
was arrested that day -- explained that his wife Layla Sweif, a university 
professor and human rights activist broke down in tears when she saw the "savage 
way" her son was beaten and thrown into a police car. "And those who weren't 
arrested were given a message to deliver to their colleagues -- that the 
government will not be tolerant and will not allow protests in Egypt's streets 
anymore," Khaled Abdel-Hamid, Youth for Change movement coordinator, told the 
Weekly. Moreover, two women activists, Nadia Mabrouk from the Labour Party and 
Salma Said from Youth for Change were sexually harassed and beaten, Abdel-Hamid 
added.
The initial 47 detainees never made it to the court and a request by the 
security officials to grant them the renewal without the detainees being present 
was refused by the court, according to one of their lawyers. All 47, who face 
charges of assembly, assaulting public functionaries, disseminating allegations 
that disturb public order and obstructing a street without permission, started a 
hunger strike last Saturday.
In a statement issued by the detainees, and published on the Kifaya website, 
they reiterated their support for reformist judges in all their demands and 
condemned the government for its "continual oppression" of the judiciary, the 
extension of the state of emergency and the "escalation of its repressive 
measures" against pro-reform movements. "Despite our willingness to pay this 
small price for the freedom of our people, we emphasise our upholding of our 
most basic rights, even as prisoners of war and hereby declare a hunger strike 
until our demands are met," read the statement which was signed by those 
arrested from before the Judges' Club and the Courts of Cassation and 
Appeal.
In the statement, the detained activists made seven demands, including 
demands to investigate the threats of torture allegedly made by state security 
personnel against them and to halt the life-threatening state that 23 of them 
are forced to endure in Tora prison through their internment with inmates who 
have been convicted of dangerous criminal offences. They also called to be 
allowed to pray in mosques and be granted access to newspapers and magazines, as 
stipulated by the prison code of regulations.
One detainee, Ahmed Salah, who was said to have started a hunger strike soon 
after his detention, was transferred to Qasr Al-Aini Hospital on Saturday due to 
his ailing condition. Accordingly, a complaint was filed to the general 
prosecutor's office by the Hisham Mubarak Law Centre, which is handling the 
detainees' cases, to investigate the reasons behind the hunger strike and the 
ill-treatment that the detainees are claimed to be receiving at Tora prison.
Among the detained are prominent socialist activists Kamal Khalil and Wael 
Khalil, journalists Ibrahim Al-Sahari and Saher Gad.
On Sunday, right after the arrests, hundreds of pro-reform activists gathered 
before the Egyptian Press Syndicate -- hailed as "Freedom Square" -- to protest 
against the arrest of their colleagues, while the area was clogged with armed 
trucks and thousands of security forces and anti-riot police. A conference to 
discuss the situation was held later the same day at the syndicate. But on 
Monday, a peaceful women's protest called for by Seif Al-Dawla among other women 
activists was not allowed by the security

Bismillah hir Rehman nir RahimThe Future is for Islam  By Shaykh Muhammad Naasirud Deen al Albaanee  Allaah the Mighty and Majestic said:   "It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all other religions, no matter how much the disbelievers detest it." [ Soorah as saff 61 : 9 ]  We are given the good tidings in this verse that the future is for Islaam, which will gain dominance, ascendancy and rule over all other religions. Some people may think that this was fulfilled in the time of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam and the Rightly guided Khaleefahs (successors) and the righteous kings but that is not the case. Rather, only a part of this true promise was fulfilled then as the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam indicated in his saying: "Night and day will not pass away until al-Laat and al 'Uzzaa are worshipped." So 'Aaishah radiallaahu 'anhaa said: O Messenger of Allaah! I thought that when Allaah sent down:   "It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all other religions, no matter how much the disbelievers detest it."  that it would be complete. He sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "There will be of that what Allaah wishes [2].  There are other ahaadeeth which show how far Islaam will reach and dominate and
 how far it will spread, such that there is no doubt that the future is for islaam, by the permission and favour of Allaah. So I will quote what I am able to from these ahaadeeth and hopefully they will strengthen the determination of the workers for Islaam; and be a proof against those who are indifferent and those who have despaired!  Firstly: "Indeed Allaah gathered up the earth for me so that I saw its east and its west; and indeed the dominion of my Ummah will reach what was gathered up for me from it. "[3]  And even clearer than it and more general is the hadeeth:   Secondly: "This affair will reach what is reached by the night and the day; and Allaah will not leave a dwelling of brick, nor fur, except that Allaah will cause this Deen to enter it bringing honour or humiliation. Honour which Allaah gives to Islaam and humiliation which Allaah will give to disbelief [4].  [Therefore, it is upon the Muslims to prepare themselves, by turning to their Lord, holding on to His Book, following the Sunnah of His Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, turning away from all that Allaah has made unlawful and uniting upon that which He the Most Perfect,
 Most High is pleased with.] [5].  Indeed, there is no doubt that fulfillment of this domination necessitates that the Muslims return to spiritual, material and armed strength, so that they are able to overcome the might of kufr (disbelief) and suppression. This good tiding is given to us in the hadeeth: Thirdly: From Abu Qabeel who said: We were with 'Abdullaah ibn
 'Amr ibn al 'Aas and he was asked which city will be conquered first Constantinople or Rome? So 'Abdullaah called for a sealed trunk and he said: Take out a book from it. Then 'Abdullaah said: Whilst we were with the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam writing, The Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam was asked: Which city will be conquered first, Constantinople or Rome? So Allaah's Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "The city of Heracilius will be conquered first " meaning Constantinople.[6]  The first conquest mentioned, occurred at the hands of Muhammad al Fattaah al-Uthmaanee as is well known and it occurred more than eight hundred years
 after the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam foretold of the conquest. So the second conquest will take place, by the permission of Allaah the Most High and it is certain and you will hear of it after a time. There is also no doubt that the fulfillment of the second conquest necessitates the return of the rightly guided Khilaafah to the Muslim Ummah, which is what he sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam foretold with his saying in the hadeeth:  Fourthly: "Prophethood will remain amongst you for as long as Allaah wishes it to, then Allaah will raise it up when He wishes to raise it up. Then there will be Khilaafah upon the manner of Prophethood and it will remain amongst you for as long
 as Allaah wishes it to, then Allaah will raise it up when He wishes to raise it up. Then there will be harsh kingship which will remain amongst you for as long as Allaah wishes it to, then Allaah will raise it up when He wishes to raise it up. Then there will be tyrannical kingship and it will remain amongst you for as long as Allaah wishes it to, then Allaah will raise it up when He wishes to raise it up. Then there will be Khilaafah upon the manner of Prophethood. Then he was silent [7]. The family of pakistani student Aamir Cheema, who breathed his last while in German police custody, has refuted the German suicide theory while the government has sent a team to investigate the death cause. "My son was tortured to death by the German police," his father Professor Nazeer Cheema, told IslamOnline.net on Sunday, May 14. Not only the family but many Pakistanis believe that German police killed Cheema, who was studying at the University of Applied Sciences in the Bavarian city of Muenchberg since 2004. The Pakistani was arrested on March 20 after trying to enter the building of Axel Springer publishing house, the publisher of Die Welt newspaper, in Berlin.
He was accused of planning to attack the paper's editor for reprinting the Danish blasphemous cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). German police said Cheema, 28, was later found dead in his cell, adding that he hanged himself using his own cloths. German Ambassador in Islamabad, Gunter Mullak said Cheema wrote a will before committing suicide. "The deceased asked for his burial in (the Muslim holy city of) Makkah and desired for offering his last prayers in the holiest mosque of Makkah in the same will." Under Islam, committing suicide is a major sin and is explicitly prohibited in the Noble Quran. Burial Pressures Cheema'a body was flown to Lahore on Saturday, May 13, and was received by the provincial minister Shujah Khanzada, who laid a wreath of flowers on it. The body was then flown over to Gujranwala Cantt in the official
helicopter of the Punjab government where it was received by district liaison officer and Corps Commander, Gujranwala. The family has accused the government of pressing them to bury him in their ancestral village of Soroki in Central Punjab. "The Pakistani government forced us to bury him in our ancestral village whereas we wanted to bury him in Rawalpindi," said his father. The family wanted to bury Cheema in Rawalpindi, Islamabad's twin city, where public opinion is more charged than in other places. Many federal ministers have visited the residence of Cheema in
Rawalpindi to pay condolences. The government also provided helicopter to bring his body from Lahore to his ancestral village. Rawalpindi and its environs were the focal point of activities during the protest campaign in Pakistan against the cartoon publication. Last September, Denmark's mass-circulation daily Jyllands Posten commissioned and printed 12 caricatures of the Prophet, including one showing him with a turban shaped like a bomb strapped to his head. The images, considered blasphemous under Islam, triggered global and sometimes violent protests against

Pakistani Investigators The government has rejected the German argument and has sent a team of Federal Investigation Agency, Pakistani's premier investigation agency, to Berlin to investigate the causes of death. "We have sent a team of experts to Germany to ascertain the real causes of death of Aamir Cheema and we will be able to say something after we get the facts," one government official told IOL. The report of German police sent to the government said Cheema had refused to go for a walk while other persons in his cell opted for it.

AYAAN Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born Dutch politician known for her
outspoken criticism of Islam, will leave parliament and move to the US
after admitting she lied to win asylum in the Netherlands.
Ms Hirsi Ali, 36, sought asylum in the Netherlands in 1992, claiming
to be escaping from an arranged marriage. She gained Dutch citizenship
in 1997 and was elected to parliament in 2003.

A storm erupted about her asylum application last week after a Dutch
television documentary interviewed members of her family about her
background. They said she had not been forced into an arranged
marriage and had had nothing to fear.

Asked whether she had falsified her asylum application, Ms Hirsi Ali
told the program she lied about her name, age and how she came to the
Netherlands.

The program prompted calls for her to leave parliament and even be
stripped of citizenship.

The MP came to international prominence in 2004 when an Islamic
militant killed filmmaker Theo van Gogh after he directed a film she
wrote accusing Islam of suppressing women.

Ms Hirsi Ali's office declined to comment on reports in the Dutch
media today that she was leaving, but said she planned to address a
news conference tomorrow.

I think it is a painful loss both for Dutch society and for politics
that Ayaan leaves parliament, said Jozias van Aartsen, a former
parliamentary leader of the VVD liberals, which is Ms Hirsi Ali's
party and part of the centre-right government.

I think it says something about the state of the country: overly
sensitive and provincial, Mr Van Aartsen told Dutch radio.

The Volkskrant newspaper said Ms Hirsi Ali would start working for the
conservative American Enterprise Institute in September after reaching
a deal with US authorities about her security.

The paper said Ms Hirsi Ali had also been in negotiations with two
other institutes, the Johns Hopkins University and the Brookings
Institution, over the past months.

Dutch Radio 1 said the move had been planned for some time, but was
brought forward because Ms Hirsi Ali has to leave her heavily-guarded
home in August after a court ruled she must move because neighbours
had complained of the security risk.

Ms Hirsi Ali went into hiding after Van Gogh's killing due to death
threats and only returned to parliament months later.

Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk, vying to be the VVD's lead
candidate in the 2007 general election, said on Sunday she would
launch an investigation into Ms Hirsi Ali's citizenship.

Ms Hirsi Ali, whose real name is Hirsi Magan, pretended she had come
to the Netherlands from Somalia, rather than via Kenya and Germany.
Refugees are usually required to apply for asylum in the first safe
country they reach after fleeing.

Immigration has been a hot topic since 2002 when populist Pim Fortuyn
said the country could not absorb more foreigners. He was killed by an
animal rights activist later that year but mainstream politicians have
since taken up his ideas.

The Increase And Decrease Of Faith

According to AhlusSunnah wal-Jamaaah, eemaan (faith) is belief in the heart, words on the tongue and actions of the body. This includes three things:

Belief in the heart
Words on the tongue
Actions of the body
As this is the case, then it will increase and decrease. That is because the degree of belief in the heart differs from one person to another. Believing in what someone tells you is not the same as believing something that you see with your own eyes. Believing in what one person tells you is not the same as believing what two people tell you, and so on. Hence Ibraaheem (alayhis-salaam) said,
My Lord! Show me how You give life to the dead. He (Allaah) said, Do you not believe? He [Ibraaheem (Abraham)] said, Yes (I believe), but to be stronger in Faith. [Soorah al-Baqarah (2):260]
Eemaan may increase with regard to belief, contentment and tranquility in the heart. A person may experience that in himself when he attends gatherings of dhikr where he hears a lesson. Remembering Paradise and Hell increases eemaan to the point where it is as if you can see them with your own eyes. But when a person is negligent and leaves those gatherings, this certain faith is reduced in his heart.
Eemaan in the sense of words may increase similarly. Whoever remembers Allaah a few times is not like one who remembers Him one hundred times. The latter is far better in eemaan.
And the one who does an act of worship in a perfect manner will have more faith than one who does it in an imperfect manner.
The same applies to righteous deeds. If a person does good deeds physically more than another, the one who does more will have more eemaan than the one who does less. This is stated in the Quraan and Sunnah I mean the fact that eemaan may increase and decrease. Allaah says,
And We have fixed their number only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty and that the believers may increase in Faith. [Soorah al-Muddaththir (74):31]
And whenever there comes down a Soorah, some of them (hypocrites) say, Which of you has had his Faith increased by it? As for those who believe, it has increased their Faith, and they rejoice. But as for those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubt, disbelief and hypocrisy), it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief and doubt; and they die while they are disbelievers. [Soorah at-Tawbah (9):124-125]
According to a saheeh hadeeth, the Prophet (sal-Allaahu alayhe wa sallam) said,
I have never seen any women lacking in reason and faith who have a more negative impact on the mind of a serious man than you.
Thus eemaan increases and decreases.

WHAT INCREASES FAITH? There are several means of increasing faith,

The first means is learning about Allaah through His names and attributes. The more a person learns about Allaah through His names and attributes, the more he will increase in faith, without a doubt. Hence you find that the scholars who know more about the names and attributes of Allaah than others do, are stronger in faith than others in this regard.
The second means is looking at the signs of Allaah in the universe and the signs of Sharee'ah (i.e., verses of the Quraan and miracles of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu alayhe wa sallam), etc.). The more a person looks at the signs of Allaah in the universe, the more he increases in faith. Allaah says,
And on the earth are signs for those who have Faith with certainty. And also in your ownselves. Will you not then see? [Soorah adh-Dhaariyaat (51):20-21]
The verses which indicate that are many, I mean the verses which indicate that by pondering and thinking about this universe, man can increase in faith.

The third means is doing many acts of worship, for the more acts of worship a person does, the more he will increase in faith thereby, whether those acts of worship involve words or actions. So dhikr increases faith in quantity and quality, and prayer, fasting and Hajj also increase faith in quantity and quality.

WHAT DECREASES FAITH? The things that make faith decrease are as follows,

Ignorance of the names and attributes of Allaah makes a decrease in faith inevitable, because if a man is lacking in knowledge of the names and attributes of Allaah, he will be lacking in faith.
Neglecting to think about the signs of Allaah in the universe and the signs of Sharee'ah (i.e., verses of the Quraan and miracles of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu alayhe wa sallam), etc.). This causes a decrease in faith or at the very least, it causes it to stagnate and not grow.
Committing sins, because sin has a profound effect on the heart and on faith. Hence the Prophet (sal-Allaahu alayhe wa sallam) said,

  BALATA, West Bank, May 15, 2006 (IslamOnline.net)  On Nakba, 
  marked every year on March 15, a 50-meter wall painting in the entrance of 
  the Balata refugee camp in the occupied West bank tells it all.
  A soft glowing sun rising over vast swathes of green land 
  with waving orange trees symbolize the peaceful life enjoyed by the 
  Palestinians until 1948.
  The scene, however, is abruptly interrupted by people lying 
  in pools of thick blood with its darkish red color against a backdrop of 
  frightened mothers carrying their babies and running for their lives, 
  symbolizing the bombardment of the onetime tranquil Palestinian villages 
  of Askalan and Tal Al-Rabei, now known as Tel Aviv, by Zionist 
  gangs.
  Another section of the masterpiece shows an old Palestinian 
  man holding firmly to the key of his home usurped by the Zionists, telling 
  his grandchildren "one day we will be back."
  A fourth part of the wall painting illustrates the deplorable 
  living conditions of the Palestinian refugees in their makeshift 
  tents.
  On April 18, 1948, Palestinian Tiberius was captured by 
  Menachem Begin's Irgun group, putting its 5,500 Palestinian residents in 
  flight. On April 22, Haifa fell to the Zionist mobs and 70,000 
  Palestinians fled.
  On April 25, Irgun began bombarding civilian sectors of the 
  Palestinian city of Jaffa - the largest city in Palestine at that time, 
  terrifying the 750,000 inhabitants into panicky flight.
  On May 14, the day before the creation of Israel on the 
  rubble of Palestine and bodies of the Palestinians, Jaffa completely 
  surrendered to the much better-equipped Zionist gangs and only about 4,500 
  of its population remained.

  Palestinian painters, whose grandparents were forced to leave their homes 
  in 1948, Sabri Zawqan, from the National Assembly for the Defense of the 
  Right of Return, who supervised the drive, told IslamOnline.net Monday, 
  May 15.
  "They spent an entire week drawing several paintings to 
  document the different phases of the Palestinian dilemma," he 
  added.
  "Every year, Palestinians come up with new ideas and methods 
  to express their resolve to return to their homes and convey their 
  sufferings to the entire world," said Zawqan.
  The West Bank refugee camp of Askar, in east Nablus, has 
  further hosted the "Bells of Return" exhibition of paintings and portraits 
  drawn by children from different refugee camps.
  Nevine Al-Qisi, 12, drew a key linked with a lungs-shaped map 
  of Palestine with Al-Quds (occupied east Jerusalem) lying in the left side 
  and the word "heart" inscribed.
  Halima Ahmad, 13, for her part sketched an old man with a key 
  of his home which he left in 1948 hanging from his neck, while his wife 
  carries some of their belongings. They are both holding the hand of their 
  grandchild.
  The exhibition further displayed belongings of some of the 
  1948 Palestinians like clothes, pots and axles.
  Return Culture
  Zawqan, like millions of Palestinians, live for the day they 
  will be able to return to their motherland and pass this dream on from one 
  generation to the other.
  "If they were to forget, the Palestinians would not forget 
  the right of return even if they were in their death throes."
  Zawqan, 35, said Palestinian artists and painters have been 
  promoting the culture of return.
  "We are instilling this culture in our children so that they 
  would not give up the right of their forbears; and thus keeping the cause 
  vivid in their minds," he explained.
  In 2005, the first Palestinian 
  atlas was launched 
  to document for the generations to come territories usurped and occupied 
  by Israeli troops.
  Up to 50,000 maps charting Palestinian sites that date back 
  to 1799 are found in the English-language geographical 
  encyclopedia.

May 12, 2006(AP) The long-dormant idea of teaching public school
students about the literary and historic importance of the Bible is
getting a fresh look this year from state legislatures and local
school boards - though with political bickering and questions about
what should be included.

The buzz results mostly from The Bible and Its Influence, a glossy
high school textbook with substantial interfaith and academic
endorsements. It's available for the coming school year, and some 800
high schools are currently considering the course.

The publisher, the Bible Literacy Project of Front Royal, Va., will
issue a teacher's edition next month and is providing online teacher
training through Oregon's Concordia University. The group expects no
legal problems, but is promising school districts worried about
lawsuits that Washington's Becket Fund for Religious Liberty will
supply attorneys without charge.

Bible Literacy isn't alone in the field. Its older rival, the National
Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools of Greensboro, N.C., is
backed by numerous conservative Protestant activists and says 36 new
clients have adopted its program this year, compared with just a
couple per month in 2005. Overall, the group says school districts in
37 states with 1,250 high schools use its curriculum.

The National Council believes the Bible should be students' only
textbook. It offers teachers a course outline, The Bible in History
and Literature, and a CD-ROM of The Bible Reader, a 1969 anthology
of texts and commentary. The outline follows the King James Version
and recommends the conservative Protestant Ryrie Study Bible for
further background.

Both efforts pursue an opening created by the U.S. Supreme Court. In a
notable 1963 ruling, the court banned ceremonial Bible readings in
public schools but allowed objective study of the text in a manner
divorced from belief.

The Bible is worthy of study for its literary and historic
qualities, the court said.

Last month, Georgia's Gov. Sonny Perdue signed a law that sanctions
but doesn't require Bible courses, and directs the state education
department to pick a curriculum by February. Legislators are mulling
similar proposals in Missouri, Tennessee and Alabama.

In Alabama, Republicans have killed a Democratic proposal specifying
use of Bible Literacy's textbook after conservatives complained to
Republicans about its pluralistic approach.

To some extent, this is about Democrats trying to get religion, and
certain Republicans trying to spread religion, says Mark Chancey of
Southern Methodist University.

Representing the Campaign to Defend the Constitution, Duke University
law professor Erwin Chemerinsky charges that Georgia is clearly
violating the First Amendment with state-sponsored religious
promotion both through Bible classes and another law allowing Ten
Commandments displays.

At Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a spokesman
finds it deeply worrisome that a religious pressure group like
Bible Literacy is promoting coursework.

Americans United cites religious activities of Bible Literacy Chairman
Chuck Stetson, an Episcopalian and New York entrepreneur, who
co-edited the textbook. The National Council's course outline is
anonymous, and President Elizabeth Ridenour declines to state her
religious affiliation.

The National Council's Web site features attacks on Bible Literacy
from conservatives, including megachurch pastors John Hagee of San
Antonio and D. James Kennedy of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Hagee calls the new textbook a masterful work of deception,
distortion and outright falsehoods that would leave pupils greatly
damaged. Kennedy says it would be a tremendous mistake to impose
such very anti-biblical material.

Other conservatives disagree. Bible Literacy won endorsements from a
lineup of evangelical scholars and leaders including Charles Colson,
who says, I do not see how any of its content would work to undermine
one's faith.

The National Council also faces attacks, particularly a scathing
32-page report last year by SMU's Chancey that was sponsored by the
liberal Texas Freedom Network and endorsed by 187 religion professors.

Chancey branded the National Council version he examined a sectarian
document that promoted primarily conservative Protestant views,
lacked input from scholars in other faith traditions and is
inappropriate for public schools. The class outline has since been
revised somewhat.

The National Council notes in response that its Bible Reader was
compiled by two Protestants, a Roman Catholic priest and a rabbi, and
cites support from several Catholics and an Orthodox rabbi.

Bible Literacy's textbook tries to sidestep sectarian disputes.

The long standing political and moral decline of the Muslim Ummah has reslted, among other things, in a serious distortion of our very concept of Islam itself. We have grown accustomed to viewing Islam as a mere "religion," instead of using the original Qur'anic term "Deen." This apparently minor change in semantics is actually a huge leap backwards. This is because the word religion is commonly used in a rather narrow sense, its scope being limited to a set of dogmas, some rituals for worship, and a number of social customs to celebrate important life-events. Deen, on the other hand, is a system of life in which human beings consciously surrender to the sovereignty of a higher authority, and live a life of total obedience to that higher authority. In this sense, the term Deen can be applied to monarchy, where the king is accepted as the final authority, or to democracy, where the people as a whole act as sovereign. Thus, when the term Deen is used for Islam, it obviously means a system of life where the Almighty God is worshipped and obeyed, not just in the narrow religious sense, but in a manner that includes all aspects of human of life.

A well-integrated set of beliefs describing the nature of existence as it really is (Iman), modes of worship including Salat, Zakat, Saum, and Hajj, as well as social customs and ceremonies — all comprise indispensable and integral parts of Islam. However, in addition to these "religious" features, we are also provided by the Almighty God all the relevant instructions regarding our social, economic, and political existence (generally considered to be the "secular" elements of life), and this is what really distinguishes Islam from other religions, say, Christianity or Buddhism. Unfortunately, the majority of our masses are simply, and perhaps blissfully, unaware of what it really means to be a Muslim; thus, their concept of religious duties is usually very narrow and limited. But, as Allama Iqbal has so correctly observed, you begin to shudder with the fear of accountability once you realize the tremendous responsibilities that come with being a Muslim.

When Islam loses its political authority, it is relegated and dethroned to the status of a mere religion — a private affair of the individual; and if any particular generation is to revive the teachings of Islam in the social, economic, and political spheres, then this is impossible without adopting the same methodology as was adopted by Prophet Muhammad (SAW). After the independence of the Muslim lands from direct subjugation of Western Imperialism, it was naively believed that since political authority now belongs to the Muslims, the next step, that of implementing the Islamic values, won't be all that difficult. However, it has been proved during the last half century or so that the ideal Islamic State is still very much a dream, and since no short-cuts are available, we have no alternative except to start at the very beginning. We must remind the Muslims of their responsibilities. The significance of this subject is quite clear: We cannot hope to achieve salvation in the Hereafter without fulfilling all our obligations. Moreover, we cannot even think about the revival of the Muslim Ummah and the Renaissance of Islam without first inculcating the true concept of our Divinely ordained obligations in a significant portion of the Ummah.

OUR FIRST OBLIGATION
as a Muslim is to develop real faith and true conviction (or Iman) in the teachings of the Qur'an as explained by to us by Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The faith must not be a mere dogma which has little or nothing to do with the practical aspects of one's life, but it must be a deeply-felt certitude that changes the whole system of values, ambitions, and behavior in favor of Islam. Iman can be gained by reading, comprehending, and pondering over the meaning of Holy Qur'an with a genuine search for truth. The knowledge of Arabic language is indispensable for this purpose.

OUR SECOND OBLIGATION
is to live a life of total obedience to the Almighty God. This duty is described in the Holy Qur'an as Ibadah, which is often inaccurately translated as worship or prayers. However, the true meaning of the term Ibadah can only be understood if we combine two apparently unrelated concepts: one is surrender, obedience, submission; the other is love, adoration, devotion. Total and unconditional compliance to all Divine injunctions is obviously required; at the same time, this compliance ought to be with a spirit of wholehearted devotion and love for the Creator.

All of us need someone or something to love, admire, and adore. Usually, our lack of knowledge of the one Being worthy of all our love, admiration, and adoration lead us towards other, less than perfect, ideals. We start loving various
