8177: If a person looks at the Mus-haf without moving his lips, will he be 
rewarded for that? 

Question: 

Some people pick up the Mus-haf and look at it without moving their lips. Can 
this be called reading Qur'aan? Or is it essential to pronounce the words 
audibly in order to earn the reward for reading Qur'aan? Will a person be 
rewarded for looking at the Mus-haf? Please advise us, may Allaah reward you 
with good. 


Answer: 

Praise be to Allaah. There is nothing to prevent a person looking at the 
Qur'aan without reciting it, in order to ponder its meanings and understand it. 
But he is not considered to be reading Qur'aan when he does that, and he does 
not earn the reward for reading it unless he pronounces (the words of) the 
Qur'aan, even if those around him do not hear him. The Prophet (peace and 
blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: 

Read the Qur'aan, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection to intercede for 
its companions. (Narrated by Muslim). 

What he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) meant by its companions is 
those who act upon it, as stated in other ahaadeeth. The Prophet (peace and 
blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever reads one letter of the Qur'aan 
will have one hasanah, and the hasanah will be rewarded tenfold. (Narrated by 
al-Tirmidhi and al-Daarimi with a saheeh isnaad). And one cannot be counted as 
reading Qur'aan unless once actually pronounces it. 

And Allaah is the source of strength.

Mohamed Mahdi Akef, 78, is the seventh supreme guide of the Muslim 
Brotherhood. A series of controversial statements he has made over the past two 
months have kept him on the front pages of the Egyptian press and provoked Ihab 
Khalifa, a lawyer, to sue him in court for allegedly "inciting the murder of 
Arab leaders".
The following interview was conducted before the National Democratic 
Party's fourth convention and Pope Benedict's controversial statements on Islam 
and the Prophet Mohamed. Akef responded with a statement on 17 September 
describing the pope's words as an insult to Islam and Muslims and demanded a 
clear apology. 
Following are excerpts from the interview conducted in his office in 
Cairo: 
Muslim Brotherhood MPs have been busy discussing constitutional changes 
and recently offered their vision of what the constitution should look like. But 
what's the point when whatever you say will fall on deaf ears? 
We are aware of the government's dictatorial approach to passing laws and 
that nothing stops them. But we have a duty as the Muslim Brotherhood to declare 
the truth regardless of whether [our constitutional vision] is acted upon.
From experience we know the National Democratic Party doesn't have a coherent 
philosophy. It simply commands a voting bloc that promotes tyranny. But we take 
our work seriously, we consult on legal and constitutional matters and then we 
present our vision to the people and to parliament.
There has been speculation that the NDP wants to change from an individual 
candidacy to a slate system in elections to prevent the Brotherhood from 
standing as a group. Does this worry you? 
[Political expert] Diaa Rashwan has written about this explicitly, saying the 
change is being engineered behind closed doors by the group around Gamal Mubarak 
but I really don't give it much attention. My first concern is the glaring 
injustice with which the state treats the Muslim Brotherhood, arresting our 
people with or without charges and throwing them in jail. Detentions continue to 
be extended without justification. It surprises me that the Egyptian press 
doesn't find such a serious development worthy of their attention. For me it is 
my top priority. How do we stop the injustice inflicted on our sons? It is the 
recklessness, the tyranny, corruption and oppression by the state of its people 
that disturbs me now.
As for amending the constitution and efforts to promote Gamal Mubarak as his 
father's successor, we know that the government has enough voting power to 
institutionalise such corruption and tyranny. We can also see clearly how a 
hostile American-Zionist strategy is targeting the Arab and Muslim nation. It is 
our mission to expose this, and support anyone who resists it, whether in 
Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine or Lebanon.
A large number of the group's leaders is currently detained. Is this the 
price you are paying for having 88 MPs, and if so how will you deal with the 
situation? 
I want the public to be aware of this situation and wake up. We do what we 
have to do, we fulfil our duties. There is clearly a link between the hostile 
[US-Zionist] strategy and the clampdown on the Brotherhood. If the [government] 
had not received a green light to do this to us they would not act in such a 
way. The situation was different during the first stage of the parliamentary 
elections when the regime was facing [external] pressure. 
Back then the MB dismissed suggestions that the government was allowing 
the group to campaign freely because of pressure from the US 
administration... 
I wanted to embarrass the regime, though they didn't understand. I could have 
said there was US pressure, and I know there was, but I thought it more 
appropriate to attribute the [relaxed environment] to Mubarak's election 
platform which talked about democracy and cancelling the emergency law. I wanted 
to attribute the change to him rather than the West... And now, is it not the 
case that the US is giving them the green light to fight everything Islamic?

Virtues of Ramadhaanby Sheikhul Hadith Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya HADITH NO. 7Ibn Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) relates: Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) said: 'Verily Allah and His Malaa'ikah send Mercy upon those who eat 'Sehri' (sower-Suhoor)." COMMENTARYHow great is Allah's favour upon us that even the partaking of food before dawn for fasting is so greatly rewarded. There are many Ahaadith in which the virtues of "Sehri" are expounded and the rewards mentioned. Allaamah Ain - Commentator on Bukhari - has quoted the virtues of "Sehri" from seventeen different 'Sahaabah' and all the "Ulama" are agreed on its being "Mustahab" (desirable). Many people are deprived of this great reward because of
their own laziness. Some even go so far as to finish 'Taraweeh', eat (what they suppose to be "Sehri'!) and go to bed. What great blessings do they lose! "Sehri" actually means partaking of food shortly before dawn. Some authorities say that the time for "Sehri" commences after half the night has passed (Mirquat). The author of Kash-shaff (Zamakhshari) divided the night into six portions, stating that the last one of these is the time of "Sehri"; so that, when the night (from sunset till dawn) extends over twelve hours, the last two hours would be the correct time for "Sehri". Then it must also be remembered that to eat at the latest possible time is better and greater in reward than eating earlier, subject to the condition that no doubt remains as to whether "Sehri" had been eaten before the time of dawn. The Ahaadith are full of virtues of "Sehri". Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) said: 'The difference between
our fasting and that of the Ahlul-Kitaab (Jews and Christians) lies in our partaking of food at "Sehri" which they do not." The Prophet has said, "Eat Sehri, because in it lie great blessings; and again. "In three things, are the great blessings: in "Jama'ah" (company), in eating "Thareed" and in "Sehri". In this Hadith, the use of the word "Jama'ah" is general, wherefrom we deduce that it includes "Salaat" with "Jamaa'ah" and all those righteous deeds done in company, as thus Allah's help comes to them. "Thareed" is a tasty preparation, in which baked bread is cooked with meat. The third thing mentioned in this Hadith is "Sehri". When Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) used to invite any of the companions to eat "Sehri" with him, he used to say: "Come and partake of blessed food with me." One Hadith says: "Eat 'Sehri' and strengthen yourself for the fast. And sleep in the afternoon (Siesta), so as to gain assistance in waking up in the latter portion of the night
(for "Ibaadah")." Abdullah bin Haarith (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that one of the Sahaaba said: "I once visited Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihi wasallam) at a time when he was busy in partaking of 'Sehri'. Rasulullah then said: "This is a thing full of blessings, which Allah has granted you. Do not give it up." Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) in urging us repeatedly for 'Sehri' has said: "Even though there be no food, then one date should be eaten or a drink of water taken." Thus, when there are definitely great advantages and reward in 'Sehri', Muslims should endeavour to observe this practice as much as possible. However, in all things moderation is important, and going beyond the bounds of moderation is harmful: neither should so little be eaten that one feels weak throughout the period of fasting, nor should so much be eaten that it causes discomfort. Repeatedly, we have been prohibited from filling the stomach excessively. In his commentary on "Sahih Bukhari", Ibne Hajar has mentioned various reasons for the blessedness of "Sehri": Because in it, the 'Sunnah' is followed. Through "Sehri", we differentiate ourselves from the ways of Ahlul-Kitaab, which we are at all times called upon to do. It provides strength for "Ibaadah" It promotes greater sincerity in "Ibaadah" It aids in elimination of bad temper, which normally comes about as result of hunger. 'Sehri' is the time when prayers are accepted. At the time of 'Sehri', one gets the opportunity to remember Allah, makes Dhikr and lifts up the hand to Him in prayer. These are a few of the major reasons; there are many others as well. Some 'Sufis' are in doubt as to whether the eating of 'Sehri' conflicts with the object of fasting or not. They maintain that the object of fasting is to stay away from food, drink and sexual desires, therefore 'Sehri' is against the object of fasting. In my opinion the amount to be eaten varies according to different persons and their activities. Foe example, for those students who are busy seeking knowledge of 'Deen', too little food at 'Sehri' as well as 'Iftaar' will be harmful; for them it is better not to have too little, because they seek 'Deeni' knowledge, which is very important (for the preservation and spread of Islam). similar is the case of those who are busy with 'Dhikr' and other 'Deeni'

starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and 
the devils are chained.   
  Volume 3, Book 31, Number 124: 
Narrated Abu Huraira:   The Prophet said, Whoever established prayers on 
the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then 
all his previous sins will be forgiven; and whoever fasts in the month of 
Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his 
previous sins will be forgiven.   
  Volume 3, Book 31, Number 126:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:   The Prophet was the most generous amongst the 
people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Gabriel visited 
him, and Gabriel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the 
month. The Prophet used to recite the Holy Qur'an to Gabriel, and when Gabriel 
met him, he used to be more generous than a fast wind (which causes rain and 
welfare).
