Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Pentecostal Churches Widening Influence On Global Affairs
They say: "Become Jews or Christians if ye would be guided (To salvation)." Say thou: "Nay! (I would rather) the Religion of Abraham the True, and he joined not gods with Allah." (Al-Qur'an, 2:135 Al-Baqara [The Cow]) Poll: Pentecostals Widening InfluenceBy RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer Thu Oct 5, 6:15 PM ET http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061005/ap_on_re_us/pentecostals_pollNEW YORK - A new 10-nation survey of Pentecostal and charismatic Christians, considered the fastest-growing stream of Christianity worldwide, shows they are deeply influencing the Roman Catholic and mainstream Protestant churches and are poised to make a big impact on global affairs. The poll released Thursday by the Washington-based Pew Forum on Religion Public Life found that "spirit-filled" Christians, who speak in tongues and believe in healing through prayer, comprise at least 10 percent of the population in nine of the 10 surveyed countries. The study also found that followers are more willing than previously thought to bring their traditional values into public debates, potentially shaping government policies in the years ahead. The surveys were conducted over the spring and summer in Brazil, Chile, Guatemala, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, India, the Philippines, South Korea and the United States. Researchers polled both Pentecostals, who form their own denominations such as the Assemblies of God, and charismatics, who have adopted some Pentecostal beliefs but remain members of traditional Protestant and Catholic churches. The survey estimated that Pentecostals and charismatics together comprise at least half the population of Brazil, Guatemala and Kenya, and 44 percent of the Philippines. They make up about one-third of the population of South Africa and Chile and nearly one-quarter of Nigerians and U.S. residents. The figure for South Korea is smaller, at 11 percent. In India, the poll was limited to three states with large Christian populations, so a national estimate could not be made. The study found Pentecostal beliefs have a strong hold in major churches in many countries. In the traditionally Catholic nations of Brazil, Guatemala and the Philippines, charismatics are a larger share of the population than Pentecostals. In six of the 10 countries, Pentecostals and charismatics together make up the majority of the overall Protestant population, according to the survey. The Pentecostal movement, which began a century ago in Los Angeles, spread quickly overseas because of its adaptability to local cultures, whose indigenous beliefs often include healings and casting out of evil spirits, and because of the exuberance of its worship. While Pentecostals and charismatics are known for speaking in tongues, the survey found respondents were more likely to say that they had personally witnessed or experienced other signs of the Holy Spirit, such as a healing through prayer or a direct revelation from God.The majority of Pentecostals in every nation surveyed except South Korea and India believed religious groups should express their views on social and political issues. In seven of the 10 countries, 70 percent of charismatics agreed. "These are folks for whom the world of spirit is remarkably alive ... but that in no way diminishes their commitment to social justice for the poor, for instance, or a role for government in meeting those needs," said Luis Lugo, director of the Pew Forum. The polls were conducted by phone in the U.S., and in person overseas, with margins of error ranging from plus or minus 4 percentage points to 9 percentage points for some subgroups. The polls in Brazil, South Africa and South Korea focused on urban areas.Pew Forum: http://pewforum.org/ AB [EMAIL PROTECTED] "For to us will be their return; then it will be for us to call them to account." Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Palestinian PM Haniya of Hamas, Our Bodies can Get Tired, but Our Soul will Not
Palestinian PM collapses at rally Ismail Haniya again said Hamas would not recognise Israel Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya has collapsed while addressing tens of thousands of supporters at a rally in the Gaza Strip. He resumed his speech a few minutes later, saying: "Our bodies can get tired, but our soul will not." Mr Haniya, 43, has been observing the Muslim daytime Ramadan fast. The PM, who is locked in a power struggle with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, said he would not be pushed from power or recognise Israel. He said recognising Israel would "amount to renouncing the land of our ancestors". Party clashes Speaking on a hot autumn day at an outdoor stadium in Gaza City, Mr Haniya began to slur his speech before he started to fall and was helped to the ground by bodyguards. Aides then helped him to a chair to recover and tried to cool him. The rally was a show of support in Hamas' struggle with Fatah He soon continued his address, saying: "We will not stop our steadfastness." The rally came after Mr Abbas - a member of the rival party, Fatah - threatened on Wednesday to dissolve Mr Haniya's government. The pair have been locked in a bitter power struggle since the collapse of talks aimed at forming a unity government. It had been hoped a unity government would lead to the lifting of Western sanctions imposed because of the refusal of Hamas to recognise Israel and renounce violence. But Mr Haniya told his supporters: "We will stay in the government. We will not recognise Israel." In the wake of protests last week by armed forces loyal to Fatah, Mr Haniya said there was "a form of a mutiny against the government". In the past week, some 15 people have been killed in clashes involving Hamas and Fatah supporters. "Any government that faced what we have faced would have fallen in the first or second month. Why has it not fallen? Because it gets its strength from God," Mr Haniya said. Al-Mahdi Unite Muslims Defend Islam and Prophet Muhammed s.a.w. with Pen, Hikmah (intelligence) and Dialogue. Boycott Israel [IslamCity] The Goals of Fasting - Very Important must read it
From:Dawah Messages [EMAIL PROTECTED] To:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:The Goals of Fasting Date:Wed, 4 Oct 2006 21:16:24 +0300 B i s m i l l a a h i r R a h m a a n i r R a h e e m The Goals of Fasting The Muslim Creed (Vol. 9, Issue 10), Sha`ban 1422 Published by The Daar of Islamic Heritage The acts of worship that the Muslims practice seek to achieve certain goals and benefits that Allah wants His slaves to acquire knowledge in them and to comprehend and achieve them. Among these acts of worship is fasting during the lunar month of Ramadhan, which has several goals that the Muslims must strive to achieve with his heart and by his actions. These goals are as follows: 1 .Achieving At-Taqwa, that is, the fear from Allah. Allah said, what translated means, O you who believe! Observing As-Sawm (fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious). [2:183]. Hence, fasting is a means to achieve At-Taqwa. In fact, all acts of worship and Tawhid are methods and means to achieve At-Taqwa, as Allah has said, what translated means, O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allah), Who created you and those who were before you so that you may become Al-Muttaqun. [2:21] 2. Acquiring the rewards of Allah. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated that Abu Hurayrah related to the Prophet, that he said, what translated means, Allah the Exalted said, 'All the deeds of the son of Adam are his, except for As-Siyam, for it is Mine and I will reward for it.' 3. The Prophet also said, The Sa-im has two happy moments: when he breaks his fast he is happy, and when he meets his Lord he is happy because of his fast. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. About his saying, When he breaks his fast he is happy, and Imam Muslim's addition, Because of his breaking his fast, Imam Al-Qurtubi commented, It means he is happy because his hunger and thirst have ended, since he is allowed to break his fast. This happiness is natural and this is apparently the desired meaning. It was also said that his being happy is because of his breaking the fast, means that he has fulfilled his fast, and as a culmination for his practicing the acts of worship. His saying, 'And when he meets his Lord he is happy because of his fast,' means he is happy because of the rewards for fasting and its complete awards.' 4. As-Sawm purifies the soul and helps it acquire the habit of obeying Allah and His Messenger by defeating the desires of the heart. Fasting teaches refraining from following the desires because the soul of the Sa-im becomes obedient to Allah's commands. Also, Satan has a stronger hold over the souls that often obey the desires. When the soul abandons its desires, it will become more difficult for Satan to have a hold on the heart. 5. Being saved from the Fire, for the Prophet said, what translated means, And Allah has those whom he frees from the Fire, and this occurs every night (meaning in Ramadhan). [At-Tirmithi ibn Majah] 6. Ash-Shafa`ah (the right of intercession). The Prophet said, As-Siyam and the Quran will intercede on behalf of the slave. As-Siyam says, 'O Lord! I prevented him from food and obeying his desires in the morning. Therefore, accept my Shafa`ah on his behalf.' And the Quran says, 'I prevented him from sleeping at night. Therefore, accept my Shafa`ah on his behalf,' and they will be accepted as intercessors.' [Ahmad, Al-Hakim Al-Bayhaqi]. 7. Having the sins forgiven. There is no doubt that fasting directs to having one's sins forgiven and erased. The Prophet said, The five prayers, and from Friday to the next Friday, and Ramadhan to the next Ramadhan, are erasers for what occurs between them, as long as major sins are avoided. [Muslim]. Also, the Messenger of Allah said, what translated means, Whoever fasts Ramadhan with Iman and Ih.tisab, will have his previous sins forgiven. [Al-Bukhari Muslim]. Imam Ahmad and An-Nasaii added the following to the above narration, And also what will occur later on (meaning future sins, as well). With Iman entails fasting while believing with the heart in the obligation of fasting during Ramadhan. As for Ih.tisab, it means that one anticipates the reward and his fasting is therefore only for the sake of Allah and not to imitate his people and community or for any other worldly gain. Boycott Israel [IslamCity] A Day in the Life of a Muslim - During Ramadan
A Day in the Life of a Muslim: During RamadanBy Mohammed Zaoud A wise old man once told me "You need to sacrifice to achieve great things". Ramadan to me, is a reiteration of this same saying. When the month of Ramadan approaches, the world witnesses mixed reactions. Some people are very arrogant, they see fasting as a burden upon them. They see this month as a time of grief, a month that can't pass quickly enough. For many other people like myself, Ramadan is a month that is a mercy from almighty God. It is not a burden at all. I mean, I have to admit that there can be times when a person may wish this month had never come, like having to face the smell of "bad" breath from sunrise to sunset; but generally, the advantages and beauties of Ramadan in a Muslim's life certainly rise above the disadvantages. It all starts at 3am. I wake up at three in the morning everyday. The whole street is quiet enough that I could hear the leaves moving on the trees. While the average Joe is nice and comfortable in his warm bed, I wake up to wash and have breakfast. Yes breakfast. This is probably the most interesting part of the day. Every morning, the question is posed in my head 'To eat or not to eat?' Do I eat cheese? Do I drink tea? Are these foods going to make me thirsty during the day? Do I die wondering? Do I stuff myself with chocolate? Nine out of ten times, I lose the battle. I always end up eating as though it is the last time I am ever going to do so. I eat the left overs from the night before. Not only do I stuff myself with chocolate, but I eat all the ice cream to settle the stomach. After the question is answered, I wait patiently for Fajr [dawn prayer] to arrive. As soon as this time elapses, this is the signal for all Muslims to start their fast. Furthermore, this is also the time when all Muslims offer two units of prayer to God. After doing so, many Muslims choose to resume their sleep whilst others choose to make the most of the month by staying up to remain in the remembrance of God by reading the Quran etc. I usually fall to the arms of sleepiness. Upon waking up to go to school, I try to get used to not having normal breakfast just before leaving home. But then again, it's all about sacrifice. The first few hours of the day, are simply normal. The real test comes during time of recess or lunch at school. I get asked many questions from my non-Muslim friends such as "Are you sure you don't want a bite of this pizza? I promise I won't tell God" or "Can't you eat McDonald's? It's not really food" or "You have your exam on today. Are you sure you don't want a drink?". The most common question I get from my non-Muslim peers is "So why fast anyway?" I hope to answer this question later on in this article. I feel great when Ramadan comes. I feel great when I know that whilst everyone else is busy in their daily activities, I am sacrificing my desires for the sake of God. I feel great when I see one of my friends, who bases his life on sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll; take a 'chill pill'. I feel great when he goes through the whole day without a cigarette. I feel great when I see my other friend, who chooses to base his vocabulary on every four letter word in the colloquial dictionary; stop and look back at his mistakes, and at the end of the month become a changed person. It's a great feeling. In Australia, Ramadan for the past decade or so, has been in summer. On a 40 degree day, whilst my mates from school are planning a beach trip for the weekend, all I can think of is water and food. But then again "You need to sacrifice to achieve great things". The hardest things come during these 40 degree days, when I am walking home from sport and my tongue is longing for water. I get home, only to remember, that there is four or five hours left for sunset. I have to admit, time goes really slowly when I wait for the clock to make its next move; but after completing whatever it is that I might have to do, whether it is my homework, or simply catching up on some relaxing time [its usually relaxing], time goes by. And then the highlight of the day. The moment I have been waiting for all day and night. The first sip of water is generally the best. The food is scrumptious. It seems to be everlasting. My taste buds start to dance inside my mouth. It happens to me every night of the month. Once I eat, I reflect on the day, and say to myself that it was all worth while. I say that with every bit of sincerity. It always seems that I have achieved something that day. The day is yet to be over. After eating my way to the toilet, and after having prayed the fourth prayer of the day, I get myself ready to go to the mosque to perform the last prayer of the day, alongside the optional congregational prayers which occur only during the Holy month. The mosque is generally overflowing with people during the month of Ramadan. For some reason, everyone seems to feel
Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Benefits of Fasting
Benefits of Fasting When a person is overcome by material desires and cravings, he becomes negligent of his spiritual being and indifferent to the obligations imposed on him by his Creator. To help man in combating this onslaught, the Almighty has made fasting compulsory once every year for one whole month -- the month of Ramadan. With Ramadan comes restriction on our eating and marital relationship. Compared with some other forms of worship subscribed by Islam, fasting is somewhat demanding because its aim is to discipline and channel our soul. This objective, obviously, can only be achieved by a tough training programme. When we are having sehri, all of a sudden we hear the Adhan and we stop eating at once. Howsoever strong our need or want to do certain things may be, they are not allowed to us during our fast; we do not give in to our wishes and temptations. This restriction remains till the maghrib Adhan as God has appointed this time for us to discontinue our fast. Therefore, as soon as the Mu'adhin begins his Adhan, we rush forth to eat and drink. After this, there is no restriction throughout the night. We spend the whole month of Ramadan in the same way. There is no doubt in the fact that we feel a certain amount of weakness and inability to perform to our full capacity but the patience and piety we acquire in return is as essential to the soul as air, water and food are to the body, for man does not live by bread and water alone but also by that which comes from his Lord. Fasting is obligatory for every adult and sane Muslim. If during Ramadan, a person is ill or if he is travelling or if he is unable to fast owing to some reason, then he is required to keep the fasts he has missed whenever he is able to do so. We gain a lot from fasting. The greatest achievement is that a man's soul is liberated from the shackles of his wishes and desires and moves a step further towards the lofty summits of knowledge and intellect. He moves a step closer to the Kingdom of Allah by rising above all mundane needs. For this purpose, fasting puts a restriction on all such things which cause an increase in our desires and incline us towards pleasure. When a person endures such constraints, he is able to break his bond with this world and come closer to his Creator. It is this aspect of fasting because of which God says that fasting is for Him and He alone will bestow the reward for it. The second thing which a person gains from fasting is that the doors of temptation and revolt are closed to a great extent. It is the tongue and the private parts on which the devil attacks the most. The Prophet (sws) said that whosoever could give him guarantee of the two things: one between the two cheeks and the other between the two legs, he would guarantee him Paradise . Fasting puts a check on both these instincts and weakens all inclinations of going overboard with these two. It makes it easy for a person to do all things that are pleasing to Allah and refrain from those which are displeasing to Him. It is this fact which the Prophet (sws) has stated by saying that Satan and his army are chained during the month of Ramadan. The third thing which a person gains from fasting is that his actual distinction -- freedom of will -- is given a great chance to develop and strengthen so that his character become adorned with the qualities of resolve and determination. He gets disciplined enough to control all sorts of emotions and reactions rising in his self. If a person's will power is weak he can neither control his wishes from exceeding the limits nor can he remain steadfast on the Shari'ah. Moreover, he cannot keep such emotions as greed, provocation, hatred and love in check. This requires patience, and, to be patient, it is necessary that he possess a strong power of decision making. Fasting increases this power and disciplines it. It is this power that helps a person to stand for the truth instead of evil. This is the reason that the Prophet (sws) called fasting a shield and asked Muslims to use it in combating evil by just saying: 'I am fasting'. The fourth thing a person attains from Fasting is that it inculcates and strengthens the spirit of sacrifice in a person and urges him to show compassion to people who are less fortunate than he. To experience hunger and thirst in a fast brings him closer to the poor and makes him realize their needs. Fasting effects everyone according to his own disposition. People who are sensitive become even more sensitive to and aware of the suffering and sorrow around them. The fifth thing that a person achieves in Ramadan is that the solitude and isolation he has in this month inclines him to spend more time in reciting the Holy Qur'an with a view to understand and practice its teachings. Allah revealed His Holy Book in this month and made this the month of fasting so that people could thank Him for this bounty. Different Ahadith have revealed that Gabriel
Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Muslim flag in Venice
Peace be with you, A city known for its astonishing architecture and heritage, Venice is home to many of the worlds most beautiful buildings and squares. The Doges Palace stands out amongst the key tourist attractions of this aquatic city and walking through it I came across a very large flag inscribed in Arabic, a picture of which can be seen here: flickr.com/photos/swamibu/262805573 There had always been active trade of Muslim goods between Venice and North Africa, Egypt and the East. In 1570 when the Venetians discovered coffee it was imported. At first, only for the wealthy but as volume increased it began to be sold in the markets of Venice such that by 1763 venice had 218 coffee houses. Interaction between the Muslim world and Vencie can also be seen in architecture. In her book 'Venice the East' Deborah Howard, a scholar of architectural history at the University of Cambridge points out that Venetian builders in the 12th through 15th centuries borrowed heavily from Muslim architecture; which includes the Doges Palace build in the 1460s. The arch styles, heightened domes, relief works on walls, even staircase patterns were taken directly from the Muslim world, which had a flourishing commercial relationship with Venice. But our interest is the battle of Lepanto which took place in 1571 just of the coast of modern day Greece. The 'Holy League' a coalition of the Papacy: Pope Pius V, Spain, Venice, Genoa, Duchy of Savoy, and the Knights of Malta fought under the command of Don Juan of Austria. Their feet had 212 galleys which were manned by 12,920 sailors, 43,000 rowers and 28,000 fighting troops. The Muslim forces had 270 galleys and 25,000 soldiers - a much smaller force compared to the Catholic forces - and were led by Ali Pacha (not to be confused with another Ali Pasha who lived a couple of centuries later). One of the Muslim naval leaders was Uluj Ali. He was an Italian who accepted Islam and later became the ruler of Algiers. He also tried to free Spain from the then oppressive Christian rule by sending a fleet of 40 ships. However they didn't make it becasue of poor winter weather. Despite orders for Ali Pasha to be captured alive, he was captured, beheaded and his head was mounted on a pike. Historians say that when the Muslim forces saw this, they lost the spirit to fight and it was then that the battle turned and the Muslim forces were defeated. Notably this was the first time a European force had defeated a Muslim force representing a turning point in history, suffice to say it didn't stop the Ottomans from capturing Cyprus. The battle of Lepanto was also the last major naval battle between rowing ships only, and today you can drive past the battle site as the Rio-Antirio bridge crosses the Gulf of Lepanto (Gulf of Corinth). Walking through the Doges Palace, seeing the Muslim flag hung on the wall brought to mind some thoughts. The objective of the Ottoman forces was to defeat the Christian army. Despite the battle failing, the flag found itself paraded at the palace of one of the Venetian Dukes. Putting aside the great trade between Venice and the Muslim world, whilst the Muslim military forces didn't make it into Venice as such, that Islamic culture and heritage was adopted to the extent that its influence can be see in the architecture of many of Venices leading buildings/ structures, goes to show that perhaps the best way to increase understanding and co-operation between faiths is not through physical wars, but through exchanges of culture, art and knowledge, and Allah Almighty knows best. Re: Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Why Jack Straw wants Muslim women to remove the veil
Straw - a pervert ? When the world is in turmoil, he is worried over the Hijab. How silly he is. Why these things are happening:- 13:11For each (such person) there are (angels) in succession before and behind him: they guard him by command of Allah. Verily never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change it themselves (with their own souls). But when (once) Allah willeth a people's punishment there can be no turning it back nor will they find besides Him any to protect. So worry not over what straw has to say, but worry over what Allah has said. ---Original Message--- From: islamcity@yahoogroups.com Date: Saturday, October 07, 2006 6:39:12 PM To: eGroup For Muslims Around The World Subject: Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Why Jack Straw wants Muslim women to remove the veil Why Jack Straw wants Muslim women to remove the veil This is a very strange and funny request from an MP whose Blackburn constituency has 25% Muslims, and whose votes helped him to get elected and become foreign secretary. Also during his time in the cabinet he visited many Muslim countries and had the opportunity to see first hand how Muslims live especially our social system which is based on segregation of the sexes with certain exceptions. During election time Mr Straw always visited local masjids and even spoke from the minbar urging Muslims to vote for him as opposed to voting for the Conservatives or Liberal Democrats. Many Muslim leaders like Ibrahim Master and Lord Patel campaigned for him vehemently. Im absolutely certain that Mr Straw took his shoes of when he entered the masjid and did not ask the question Why must I take my shoes off, because when I visit the church I keep them on? And this is a sign of division among communities. Maybe he thought better to accept their backward ways, after all these idiots still vote for me regardless of how many Muslim countries we invade and how many Muslims we kill. Many Muslims like the ones I have mentioned campaigned for him and spent many hours together with him and discussed about Islam and Im sure he asked them many questions. Surely the question of Muslim womens dress must have come up especially since the case of the French hijab ban and Shabina Begum excluded from a Luton school were prominent in the media? The answer is very simple and even these brothers were able to explain to Mr Straw that t the way some western women dress in summer which agitates the emotions of most men, the homosexuals being the exception of course. Maybe its because he approves and likes that style of clothing which reveals parts of the female anatomy. I wonder what the Victorians would have thought. Maybe they would have said What are these prostitutes doing outside of the brothel. Nowadays to think such thoughts classifies one as being backward or Islamic fundamentalist woman repressor. Its funny that for women to cover in public is considered to be backward and ignorant, but to ask them to reveal more and more of their flesh is considered to be modern and enlightened. An important point to consider is that women can only reveal so much flesh before they might as well be naked; this thought would be repulsive to Mr Straw but the question I would ask is why? Their not wearing the veil and dividing communities but rather liberating themselves and going back to what some would say nature. Muslims of course find western dress code disgusting, shameful and degenerate because we compare against the Islamic dress code which originated from Allah swt who knows better than humans, even a collection of the most intellectual humans gathered together in Parliament or the ones with the highest IQs from Mensa. No matter how clever they are with multiples PhDs it was Allah who created them in the first place. We as Muslims can see that in the west rape, sexual harassment, fornication, sexual diseases, illegitimate kids, abortion, all exist because of the social system not being defined correctly. A discussion needs to take place on these issues: Is their co-relation between men and women relationships which leads to the corruption I mentioned above? If the answer is yes then what are correct way men and women should
