Concept of God in Hinduism

http://www.aulia-e-hind.com/koransway.htm#islamnHindus

1. Hinduism is commonly perceived as a polytheistic religion. Indeed, most
Hindus would attest to this, by professing belief in multiple Gods. While some
Hindus believe in the existence of three gods, some believe in thousands of
gods, and some others in thirty three crore i.e. 330 million Gods. However,
learned Hindus, who are well versed in their scriptures, insist that a Hindu
should believe in and worship only one God.
The major difference between the Hindu and the Muslim perception of God is the
common Hindus’ belief in the philosophy of Pantheism. Pantheism considers
everything, living and non-living, to be Divine and Sacred. The common Hindu,
therefore, considers everything as God. He considers the trees as God, the sun
as God, the moon as God, the monkey as God, the snake as God and even human
beings as manifestations of God!
Islam, on the contrary, exhorts man to consider himself and his surroundings as
examples of Divine Creation rather than as divinity itself. Muslims therefore
believe that everything is God’s i.e. the word ‘God’ with an apostrophe ‘s’. In
other words the Muslims believe that everything belongs to God. The trees
belong to God, the sun belongs to God, the moon belongs to God, the monkey
belongs to God, the snake belongs to God, the human beings belong to God and
everything in this universe belongs to God.
Thus the major difference between the Hindu and the Muslim beliefs is the
difference of the apostrophe ‘s’. The Hindu says everything is God. The Muslim
says everything is God’s.

2. Concept of God according to Hindu Scriptures:

We can gain a better understanding of the concept of God in Hinduism by
analyzing Hindu scriptures.

BHAGAVAD GITA:
The most popular amongst all the Hindu scriptures is the Bhagavad Gita.
Consider the following verse from the Gita:
Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto
demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according
to their own natures. [Bhagavad Gita 7:20]
The Gita states that people who are materialistic worship demigods i.e. ‘gods’
besides the True God.

UPANISHADS:
The Upanishads are considered sacred scriptures by the Hindus.
The following verses from the Upanishads refer to the Concept of God:
Ekam evadvitiyam
He is One only without a second. [Chandogya Upanishad 6:2:1]1
Na casya kascij janita na cadhipah.
Of Him there are neither parents nor lord. [Svetasvatara Upanishad 6:9]2
Na tasya pratima asti
There is no likeness of Him. [Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:19]3
The following verses from the Upanishad allude to the inability of man to
imagine God in a particular form:
Na samdrse tisthati rupam asya, na caksusa pasyati kas canainam.
His form is not to be seen; no one sees Him with the eye. [Svetasvatara
Upanishad 4:20]4

THE VEDAS:

Vedas are considered the most sacred of all the Hindu scriptures. There are
four principal Vedas: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samveda and Atharvaveda.

Yajurveda

The following verses from the Yajurveda echo a similar concept of God:
“na tasya pratima asti
There is no image of Him. [Yajurveda 32:3]5
shudhama poapvidham
He is bodyless and pure. [Yajurveda 40:8]6
Andhatama pravishanti ye asambhuti mupaste
They enter darkness, those who worship the natural elements (Air, Water,
Fire, etc.). They sink deeper in darkness, those who worship sambhuti.
[Yajurveda 40:9]7
Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol, etc.
The Yajurveda contains the following prayer:
Lead us to the good path and remove the sin that makes us stray and wander.
[Yajurveda 40:16]8

7[Yajurveda Samhita by Ralph T. H. Giffith page 538]
8[Yajurveda Samhita by Ralph T. H. Griffith page 541]

Atharvaveda

The Atharvaveda praises God in Book 20, hymn 58 and verse 3:
Dev maha osi
God is verily great [Atharvaveda 20:58:3]9

Rigveda
The oldest of all the vedas is Rigveda. It is also the one considered most
sacred by the Hindus. The Rigveda states in Book 1, hymn 164 and verse 46:

Sages (learned Priests) call one God by many names. [Rigveda 1:164:46]
The Rigveda gives several different

The six month jail sentence handed down to Armenian journalist Hrant
Dink following an article he wrote for the bilingual Turkish-Armenian
Agos newspaper in Istanbul was confirmed in a 5 page statement
released yesterday from Istanbul court which convicted him. Dink's
article in the Agos newspaper included the line The clean blood which
will take the place of the poisoned blood emptied from the Turks
belongs to the noble vein of the Armenians in Armenia. This line is
also a play on a line from Nutuk, a famous speech given by Ataturk.

Nutuk: Freedom of thought and speech have their limits

The 5 page statement from Sisli's 2nd Chamber Court, includes a
passage from Nutuk. This passage is one in which Ataturk attests
that freedom of thought and speech are not limitless, and that
everything has its own limits. A part of the decision from the Sisli
Court is as follows:

The defendant said Turkish blood was poisoned

Every part of these lands has been drenched in blood. Ataturk knew
that this land had been saved by this blood, and thus told the youth
of the country that the strength of the land was owed to this blood.
The defendant, however, has expressed that this blood is poisoned.
This is disrespectful to Turkish ancestors, fallen soldiers, and the
shared values of the people.

The Hrant Dink case has caused concern among many viewers, especially
in light of the newly started EU accession talks for Turkey, with more
focus being given to the state of human rights in Turkey.

The incident happened today in front of the editorial office. Unknown
persons fired on editor-in-chief for four times. Dink died in the

INTERVIEW
Imam Badi Ali [Greensboro, North Carolina], first Muslim Immigrant leader to
Stand up for Islam in America: Why did he Lead Prayers for President Saddam
Hussain?

New Trend: Dear brother, we have been publishing reports on your astonishing
stance on issues facing the Islamic community. You have spoken and acted in
ways which are normal according to the Qur'an and the Hadith but which are
almost unheard of among immigrant Muslim communities in the U.S. To mention only
one point, you gave a FATWA against the Saudi attempts to discredit the
Hizbullah's resistance to the Israeli army's terroristic assault on Lebanon in
2006.
Our readers would like to know more about you. You have been much too humble
about yourself. Can you tell us factually your status in the Muslim community.

Imam Badi Ali: I am President of the Islamic Center of the Triad [ICT} and
have been so, on and off, for 10 years. I am a member of the Board of the ICT's
Islamic weekend school. There are 105 children in the school.

NT: What are your duties as Imam at the ICT?

IBA: I often give the khutba and lead the prayers on Juma.' I often provide
counselling for Muslim women, men and youths and I and officiate at marriages
and funerals.

NT: Are you a paid imam? Are you paid for your Islamic services?

IBA: No! For me, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal summed up the Islamic attitude when he
said: Providing services for people who are in need is a form of worship.
Imams who are paid face certain restrictions which may not be Islamic.

NT: What has been your effort among Muslims here in the U.S. on a national
scale?

IBA: I was founding member of the IAP [Islamic Association of Palestine] and
worked in its executive committee and information committee. I was the editor
of various publications like falastin al-ghed  ['Palestine tomorrow' in
Arabic]. I was responsible for the release of some Muslims in Tunisia. I worked
to
help the Muslims of the Soviet Union. I won't go into all my activities.
Now I am member of the National Shoora of Jamaat al-Muslimeen.

NT: What about charitable work right here in America?

IBA: We went all out to help the victims of the Katrina disaster in New
Orleans. Some of them were brought for temporary stay to North Carolina.

NT: How are your relations with non-Muslims?

IBA: I am an organizer and activist of the Peace Movement in North Carolina.
We conducted a whole series of protest marches against the Israeli assault on
Lebanon. Most of the participants were non-Muslims. I also worked with
non-Muslims to protest the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

NT: If you are not paid for your services as Imam, how do you earn your
living?

IBA: I work with troubled youths and have been doing this professionally for
16 years.

NT: Where were you born and who gave you the basic education in Islam?

IBA: My home is in the village of Abwain, near Ramallah in Palestine, but I
grew up in Kuwait and became part of the Islamic movement.  Shaikh Yunus Hamdan
taught us Hadith from Fath al-Bari every day after Fajr salat till it was
completed. Among other influences, more political,  were Abdullah Nafisi and an
independent scholar Dr. Umar al-Ashqar. I used to write for al-Mujtama',
Kuwait's well-known Islamic magazine. At that time Kuwait was stable and was a
good
environment for intellectual activity.

NT: Now we come to your most controversial, courageous and difficult action:
You led salatul janaza ghaibana for President Saddam Hussain which no one else
in America dared do. What made you take this great risk in a country which
considered Saddam its worst enemy?

IBA: Saddam changed after the [first] Gulf War. We have to ask Allah to
forgive him and accept him. He met death calmly and with dignity like a true
Muslim. He was reciting the shahadah, la illaha il-Allah Muhammad rasul Allah
as he
left this world. Thus he became a martyr, all of whose sins are forgiven by
Allah.

NT: All praise belongs to Allah!

IBA: He reminded me of Syed Qutb and with this great sacrifice now we begin
to understand. Allah made Saddam a legendary hero for

What is the Significance of Fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram
  http://ourdialogue.com/answers/articles.php?action=showshowarticle=280

When the Prophet, peace be upon him, settled in Madinah, there was a large
Jewish community there. He noticed that the Jews fasted on the 10th of
Muharram. He asked them the purpose of their fasting. They said that that was
the date when Allah saved the Prophet Moses from a great danger. The Prophet,
peace be upon him, said that he [and the Muslims] were closer to Moses than the
Jews. He fasted that day.

He continued to fast on the 10th of Muharram as a voluntary worship until the
year when he passed away. That year he said: If I live till next year, I will
fast on the 9th of Muharram. This meant that he would be fasting on the 9th
and 10th of that month. Most probably the reason for this was that he wanted to
distinguish his fasting in Muharram from that of the Jews, although the reason
for fasting is the same.

Perhaps I should add that fasting in Muharram has nothing to do with the
events that led to the martyrdom of Al-Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet,
peace be upon him. That was an event that took place at a time when nothing
could be added to our religion or our practices.

Surging and Purging
By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: January 19, 2007

There’s something happening here, and what it is seems completely clear: the
Bush administration is trying to protect itself by purging independent-minded
prosecutors.

Last month, Bud Cummins, the U.S. attorney (federal prosecutor) for the Eastern
District of Arkansas, received a call on his cellphone while hiking in the
woods with his son. He was informed that he had just been replaced by J.
Timothy Griffin, a Republican political operative who has spent the last few
years working as an opposition researcher for Karl Rove.

Mr. Cummins’s case isn’t unique. Since the middle of last month, the Bush
administration has pushed out at least four U.S. attorneys, and possibly as
many as seven, without explanation. The list includes Carol Lam, the U.S.
attorney for San Diego, who successfully prosecuted Duke Cunningham, a
Republican congressman, on major corruption charges. The top F.B.I. official in
San Diego told The San Diego Union-Tribune that Ms. Lam’s dismissal would
undermine multiple continuing investigations.

In Senate testimony yesterday, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales refused to say
how many other attorneys have been asked to resign, calling it a “personnel
matter.”

In case you’re wondering, such a wholesale firing of prosecutors midway through
an administration isn’t normal. U.S. attorneys, The Wall Street Journal
recently pointed out, “typically are appointed at the beginning of a new
president’s term, and serve throughout that term.” Why, then, are prosecutors
that the Bush administration itself appointed suddenly being pushed out?

The likely answer is that for the first time the administration is really
worried about where corruption investigations might lead.

Boycott Israel [IslamCity] The Muslim Brotherhood says it will continue to measure its responses despite the regime's latest heavy-handed clampdown, writes Jailan Jailan i ---al-ahram weekly

2007-01-23 Thread S A Hannan

Dear members,

Assalamu Alaikum. Please see the oppressive policy of the government
against the main political force of Egypt.

HalawThe Muslim Brotherhood says it will continue to measure its
responses despite the regime's latest heavy-handed clampdown, writes Jailan i

The first sign of a change of tack in the regime's approach to the
legally outlawed Society of Muslim Brothers (MB) came on 11 January when press
agencies carried statements made by President Hosni Mubarak during an interview
with the editor-in-chief of the weekly independent Al-Osbou, warning that the
group poses a threat to Egypt's security. Should political Islam gain power in
Egypt, said Mubarak, it will threaten foreign investment and could isolate the
country from the world.

The interview was interpreted by many as giving a green light to a new
phase in the ongoing clampdown on the group which began a month earlier with
the arrest of some 200 MB members. Some analysts even argue that Mubarak's
statements signalled the beginnings of a policy of zero-tolerance of the group
by the state.

A day after Mubarak's statements, the Muslim Brotherhood announced that
it intended to establish a civil political party, embracing Muslims and
non-Muslims. It would not, however, submit a request to the Parties Committee
for a licence, a process which, the Brotherhood claims, is intended to obstruct
rather than facilitate the setting up of political parties. The group's
strategy now appears to press for a change in the law governing the
establishment of political parties before seeking to establish their own.

Observers argue that the Brotherhood's response to the Mubarak
interview is an attempt by the group to present itself as a force committed to
civil society. The sincerity of that attempt soon became the subject of heated
debate among political analysts and commentators, who raised a plethora of
questions as to the significance of the Brotherhood's decision. Is it a
political manoeuvre or a genuine attempt by the group to transform itself into
a civil organisation?

Salah Eissa, editor-in-chief of the weekly Al-Qahira, is among those
who argue that it is high time the group's leadership announce their political
programme and explain their goals to the public which until now does not know
precisely what it is the Brotherhood wants. Eissa, however, criticised the
group for announcing its intention to form a party while refusing to submit a
request to the committee in charge of licensing parties, condemning the tactic
as a manoeuvre aimed at embarrassing the regime and challenging the
government.

Whatever the real intentions of the group, the announcement that it is
seeking to become a civil organisation is worthy of study, says Amr Elchoubaki,
a political analyst at Al-Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies.
With strong state institutions and a government elected in a free and
democratic vote... there is no harm in the Brotherhood becoming a political
party, he told the Weekly.

In what appears to be an official response, the state-owned Al-Ahram
daily published a statement quoting an anonymous state official who described
the Brotherhood's plans to form a party as propaganda... aimed at attracting
attention and outmanoeuvring the state security apparatus.

Meanwhile, the clampdown on the group continues, with six senior group
members arrested on 14 January, and more arrests reported yesterday. The six MB
members detained earlier in the week were remanded in custody for 15 days
pending interrogation. They include Mohamed Bishr, of the group's Guidance
Bureau, and Issam Hashish, a Cairo University professor and Brotherhood's
leader in Giza. The others were Medhat El-Haddad, Osama Abdel-Mohsen,
Abdel-Rahman Saudi and Khaled Ouda, all wealthy businessmen. This gave rise to
speculation that the current wave of arrests is intended to undermine the
group's financial infrastructure. The prosecutor- general's office has accused
the Brotherhood of money laundering.

This week's arrests are the latest in a series that began after
Islamist students at Al-Azhar University staged a military- style parade in
which they wore militia- style uniforms and balaclavas. Following the
demonstration, tens of students were rounded up, along with the group's deputy
supreme guide, Khairat El-Shatir, on charges of forming a para- military group.

Banned since 1954, the Muslim Brotherhood is Egypt's largest and most
effective opposition bloc. Members of the group, standing as independents, now
hold 88 seats in the 454-seat parliament. In a telephone interview with
Al-Ahram Weekly, MB Deputy Supreme Guide Mohamed Habib denied that the arrested

Was Islam spread by sword?

by Dr. Zakir Naik

It is a common complaint among some non-Muslims that Islam would not have
millions of adherents all over the world, if it had not been spread by the use
of force! Muslims today are weak all over the globe, yet Islam is spreading
faster than any other religion even in America and Europe. The following points
will make it clear, that far from being spread by the sword, it was the
inherent force of truth, reason and logic that was responsible for the rapid
spread of Islam.
1. Islam means peace. Islam comes from the root word ‘salaam’, which means
peace. It also means submitting one’s will to Allah (swt). Thus Islam is a
religion of peace, which is acquired by submitting one’s will to the will of
the Supreme Creator, Allah (swt).
2. The best reply to the misconception that Islam was spread by the sword is
given by the noted historian De Lacy O’Leary in the book Islam at the cross
road (Page 8):
History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping
through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered
races is one of the most fantastically absurd myth that historians have ever
repeated.
3. Muslims ruled Spain for 800 years. Muslims ruled Spain for about 800 years.
The Muslims in Spain never used the sword to force the people to convert. Later
the Christian Crusaders came to Spain and wiped out the Muslims. There was not
a single Muslim in Spain who could openly give the adhan, that is the call for
prayers.
4. 14 million Arabs are Coptic Christians. Muslims were the lords of Arabia for
1400 years. For a few years the British ruled, and for a few years the French
ruled. Overall, the Muslims ruled Arabia for 1400 years. Yet today, there are
14 million Arabs who are Coptic Christians i.e. Christians since generations.
If the Muslims had used the sword there would not have been a single Arab who
would have remained a Christian.
5. More than 85% non-Muslims in India. The Muslims ruled India for about a
thousand years. If they wanted, they had the power of converting each and every
non-Muslim of India to Islam. Today more than 85% of the population of India
are non-Muslims. All these non-Muslim Indians are bearing witness today that
Islam was not spread by the sword.
6. Indonesia and Malaysia. Indonesia is a country that has the maximum number
of Muslims in the world. The majority of people in Malaysia are Muslims. May
one ask, Which Muslim army went to Indonesia and Malaysia?
7. East Coast of Africa. Similarly, Islam has spread rapidly on the East Coast
of Africa. One may again ask, if Islam was spread by the sword, Which Muslim
army went to the East Coast of Africa?
8. The famous historian, Thomas Carlyle, in his book Heroes and Hero worship,
refers to this misconception about the spread of Islam:
The sword indeed, but where will you get your sword? Every new opinion, at its
starting is precisely in a minority of one. In one man’s head alone. There it
dwells as yet. One man alone of the whole world believes it, there is one man
against all men. That he takes a sword and try to propagate with that, will do
little for him. You must get your sword! On the whole, a thing will propagate
itself as it can.
9. No compulsion in religion. With which sword was Islam spread? Even if
Muslims had it they could not use it to spread Islam because the Qur’an says in
the following verse: Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out
clear from error [Al-Qur’an 2:256]
10. Sword of the Intellect. It is the sword of intellect. The sword that
conquers the hearts and minds of people. The Qur’an says in Surah Nahl, chapter
16 verse 125: Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful
preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious.
[Al-Qur’an 16:125]
11. Increase in the world religions from 1934 to 1984. An article in Reader’s
Digest ‘Almanac’, year book 1986, gave the statistics of the increase of
percentage of the major religions of the world in half a century from 1934 to
1984. This article also appeared in ‘The Plain Truth’ magazine. At the top was
Islam, which increased by 235%, and Christianity had increased only by 47%. May
one ask, which war took place in this century which converted millions of
people to Islam?
12. Islam is the fastest growing religion in America and Europe. Today the
fastest growing religion in America is Islam. The fastest growing religion in
Europe in Islam. Which sword is forcing people in the West to accept Islam in
such large numbers?
13. Dr. Joseph Adam Pearson rightly says:
People who worry that nuclear weaponry will one day fall in the hands of the
Arabs, fail to realize that the Islamic bomb has been dropped already, it fell
the day MUHAMMED (pbuh) was born.
14. Sometimes force has to be used to maintain peace. Each and every human
being in this world is not in favor of maintaining peace and harmony. There

American Congressmen Planning Bill to Stop Bush Administration 's Iran Attack

A Dhaka daily quoting AL -Jazeerah has reported that under the leadership of
Republican Congressman Walter Jones a bi-partisan bill is being submitted in
the congress so that American administration may not be able to attack Iran
without prior approval of the Congress.

In this connection we have previously seen a Dawn Karachi report that ,as
stated by Pakistan's former army chief Gen Mirza Aslam Beg , both Iran and
Pakistan are on the hit list of the United States, and before attacking the
two countries the world's only super power is trying to isolate them at the
international level through diplomatic moves.
Talking to Dawn on Wednesday 17th January, he said Iran would be targeted first
and Pakistan at a later stage. But to prevent Pakistan from extending any kind
of assistance to its neighbor, Washington was trying to keep Islamabad under
constant pressure. Repeated allegations that infiltration from Pakistan into
Afghanistan was still going on should be seen in that context, the general
said. He said Pakistan and Iran should enhance mutual understanding and
cooperation to be able to face the challenge ahead. Also, he said, both
countries should approach their respective allies and seek their cooperation to
prevent what he called a dangerous situation for the region. He believed that
together the two Islamic countries would be able to counter what was being
planned against them.
Gen Beg said the US knew that Iraq did not have nuclear capability and still it
attacked Iraq with its superior air and naval power. He said now the US would
go for massive strikes on Iran, using all satellite bases it has in the
neighboring countries of the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa. According to
him, the US could also use F-117 Stealth, which can take off from the US bases,
hit targets in Iran and go back. He said the US had plans to destroy thousands
of targets in the first 24 hours. The former army chief said the US threats to
Iran were a precursor to attack. About the moves to isolate Iran even among the
Islamic countries, he said, the visits of US Secretary of State Condoleezza
Rice and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates were meant for the same purpose.
They were telling the Arab countries in particular that Iran was misbehaving
and must be punished. The Iraqi president's visit to Syria was also aimed at
driving Damascus away from Tehran, and the ongoing secret talks between Israel
and Syria were also significant, said Gen Beg.

We have also received a letter of a western analyst where he says, I believe
that the United States is preparing to attack by air and special forces the
nuclear installations within Iran and in doing so the Iranian air force and air
defense systems. Perhaps also the Iranian Navy to minimize the disruption of
the flow of oil. No decision has been made to launch such an attack but Bush
will be in a position to do so in a month. There is maximum pressure being
placed against Iran. The USA is not committed to such an attack and Iran can
avoid it by reaching some agreement with the IAEA about their nuclear program.

We believe Iran has done everything in its power to explain its position in the
UN and IAEA. It has also proposed bi-lateral talk with the US but nothing is
of avail against deaf ears of US. We hope for the best so that another disaster
can be avoided.

In this context we welcome the move of US Congressmen to pass a bill binding
the US administration so that it may not be able to attack Iran without the
approval of the Congress.

Boycott Israel [IslamCity] President Hosni Mubarak's proposed constitutional amendments were approved --a barrage of criticism from opposition --alahramweekly

2007-01-23 Thread S A Hannan
Dear members,

Assalamu Alaikum. Please see the discussion on constitutional changes in Egypt
which will narrow down further the political freedom. In particular the
Brotherhood will now not be allowed to form a party and also will not be
allowed to stand as independent candidates. What a horrible plan of the ruling
dynasty of Egypt.

Shah Abdul Hannan

 Political landscapes
President Hosni Mubarak's proposed constitutional amendments were
approved by the People's Assembly majority --- but not without a barrage of
criticism from opposition and independent MPs, Gamal Essam El-Din reports

The People's Assembly yesterday provisionally approved President Hosni
Mubarak's 26 December request to amend 34 articles of the constitution.

Unlike the Shura Council, where 244 out of a total of 264 members last
week rubber-stamped Mubarak's proposal, in the People's Assembly, whereas 315
MP's approved the amendments, over 100 MPs opposed them. These included Muslim
Brotherhood, leftist and nationalist deputies who lashed out at the suggested
changes, describing them as botched and representing another constitutional
setback in the long history of Egypt.

Although deputies from the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) were
under strict instructions to rally behind the initiative, a large number
expressed reservations. They said the amendments aimed to reinforce, rather
than curtail, presidential powers, and provided the Shura Council with an
unnecessarily large legislative role.

In a 58-page report the Assembly's General Committee heaped praise on
Mubarak's initiative, arguing that it reflected a keenness to improve the
democratic climate and upgrade the constitutional backbone of Egypt's political
system.

The report said the proposed amendments aimed to scrap the country's
36-year-old socialist-democratic system based on an alliance of the working
masses in favour of one based on national unity.

National unity is the core of democracy because it allows every
citizen, regardless of religion, sex and lineage, to exercise political
rights, the report said.

The report also explained that Mubarak's proposal to ban parties based
on religion does not conflict with Article 2 of the constitution which states
that Islamic Sharia (law) is the main source of legislation in Egypt.

It aims to rid the constitution of all socialist principles while
refraining from imposing a specific economic system on the nation, the report
said.

Nor, the report continued, does President Mubarak's initiative seek to
impose a particular election system on the nation.

The initiative allows the legislative authority freedom in choosing an
election system without facing objections from the Supreme Constitutional
Court.

The report argued that Mubarak's decision to re- amend Article 76 will
make it easier for political parties to field candidates in presidential
elections. This could make the coming presidential elections very competitive
and enable political parties to develop a greater foothold in political life.

In the area of judicial supervision, the report said, Mubarak's
initiative draws on the experience of India in ensuring that parliamentary
elections are marked with integrity and that large numbers of voters have easy
access to polling stations.

The report also praised moves to scrap the emergency law in favour of
anti-terror legislation.

In the battle against terrorism most countries have enacted
anti-terror laws, said the report.

Acting on the orders of party leaders, NDP MPs were more than eager to
rally behind Mubarak's initiative. Their speeches, however, were high on
rhetoric, low on facts.

NDP spokesman Abdel-Ahad Gamaleddin announced the assembly is grateful
to President Mubarak because his initiative shows that he is always loyal to
the issue of constitutional reform.

Kamal El-Shazli, a veteran NDP MP, said the initiative demonstrated
Mubarak's commitment to improving the political climate. Zakaria Azmi,
President Mubarak's chief of staff, claimed this is the first time the
president of the republic accepts his powers be curtailed.

Mahmoud Abaza, leader of the liberal-oriented Wafd Party, surprised the
Assembly when he gave his party's provisional approval of the amendments.
However, added Abaza, the Wafd reserves the right to object to particular
amendments when their final draft comes up for debate.

Abaza said the Wafd believed the decision to amend constitutional
articles, or even change the constitution as a whole, should not be left up to
the president but should be determined through a debate by a constituent
assembly charged with
