Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Islam Number Seven and Spiritual Evolution

2007-08-31 Thread Kamal Shariff
While I agree with the fundamental premise, that ALLAH THE MOST HIGH CAN CREATE
AS HE WILLS AND WHEN HE WILLS. However,
I am not certain that the answer to the fundamental question as put forward
was given. Not insignificantly, this question, in a round about way, is posed
in the Biblical Old Testament where it is stated that ALLAH-G-D-rested on the
7Th day after creating the heavens and the earth. Of course, this would negate
the whole question and raise an even more significant question, namely, hod
could Allah be G-d if he had to re3st. The very fact of rest would mean that a
being would have a power superior to it which would make him (Allah-G-D) other
than G-d. I have no doubts about anything in the Qur'an. If Allah said it it is
true. On the other hand, Allah gave us intelligence to use. I concur with those
who maintain that the verse, one that I have often thought about, holds great
spiritual and metaphysical meaning concerning man's (HUMAN BEINGS) spiritual
growth and ascendancy. The key is in the word seven, also in the Bible, which
significance means whole, complete (whole and
complete within a self-defined stage). It is taken from the musical scale.
Do,re, mi , fa, so, lo ,ra. ti do in which the cycle repeats itself. If this is
plausible, then the question is what do the steps one through six symbolize
with the respect to human spiritual evolution which is the only subject with
with the Glorious Quran concerns itself. When our illustrious Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH) ascended to heaven he 'met' seven outstanding spiritual figures at each
stage of his journey which must be interpreted as a spiritual journey that all
Muslims are 'theoretically' possible of attaining.

20613: Why did Allaah create the heavens and the earth in six days when He is
able to have created it in less time?

Question:

If Allah intends a thing, his only word is "BE" and it is. can you please
explain why he took 6 days to create the heavens and earth?.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

One of the firm beliefs held by people of deep faith and complete Tawheed is
that the Lord, may He be exalted, is able to do all things, and His power is
without limits. He has absolute power, perfect will and ultimate control of all
affairs. If He wills a thing, it happens as He wills it at the time when He
wills it, and in the manner that He wills.

There are many definitive texts in the Book of our Lord and in the Sunnah of
His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which affirm this and
state it clearly, with no ambiguity. It is sufficient here for us to quote some
of the verses that indicate this, such as the verses (interpretation of the
meaning):

"The Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He only
says to it : `Be!' — and it is"

[al-Baqarah 2:117]

Al-Haafz Ibn Katheer said in his commentary on this verse (Tafseer 1/175):
"Here Allaah explains the completeness of His power and the greatness of His
authority, and that if He wills and decrees something, He simply says to it,
`Be!' _ just once _ and it is, i.e., it comes into existence as He willed it.
This is like the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

`Verily, His Command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it,
"Be!" — and it is!'

[Ya-Seen 36:82]."

And Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"When He has decreed something, He says to it only: `Be!' — and it is"

[Aal `Imraan 3:47]

"It is He Who gives life and causes death. And when He decides upon a thing He
says to it only: `Be' — and it is"

[Ghaafir 40:68]

"And Our Commandment is but one as the twinkling of an eye"

[al-Qamar 54:50]

Al-Haafiz Ibn Katheer said in his commentary on this verse (4/261): "Here
Allaah tells us how His will is executed in His creation, and how His decree is
implemented. `And Our Commandment is but one' means, We only issue a command
once, and We do not need to repeat it a second time, and what We command
happens in the twinkling of an eye, it is not delayed for an instant. How well
the poet put it:

`When Allaah wills something, all He says to it is "Be!", once, and it is.'"

And there are many other verses which speak of this matter and explain it.

Once this is established, then why did Allaah create the heavens and the earth
in six days?

Firstly:

It is narrated in more than one verse of the Book of our Lord that Allaah
created the heavens and the earth in six days. For example, Allaah says
(interpretation of the meaning):

"Indeed, your Lord is Allaah, Who created the heavens and the earth in Six
Days, and then He rose over (Istawa) the Throne (really in a manner that suits

Passenger Arrested After Trying to Open Door During Flight
Sunday , August 26, 2007

DENVER -

A passenger tried to open a plane door during a Frontier Airlines flight on
Saturday morning but was subdued by airline staff and passengers, an airline
spokesman said.
Police and Transportation Security Administration staff met Flight 514 after
the plane landed in New York City and took the man into custody, said Frontier
spokesman Joe Hodas.

Hodas said the man, whose name was not released, would not have been able to
open the door even if he had not been subdued. "You need special training to
open the door," he said.

There were 128 passengers and five crew members on the plane, Hodas said.

Passenger Bobby Vigil of Estes Park told KUSA-TV in Denver that the man had
been acting strangely. Vigil said he and other passengers helped a flight
attendant tie the man to his seat with duct tape.

"The whole rest of the flight, all the way in, he was yelling and trying to
bite the tape, and they ended up restraining him with an extra lap belt," said
Vigil.

Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Borat, Kazakhstan and Nuclear Arms

2007-08-31 Thread Maqsud Sobhani
Salaam Alaikum,
Many of you must have heard of the movie Borat. In the movie, Borat Sagdiyev is
a fictional Kazakh journalist portrayed by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen.
The movie went on to become a super hit, at the expense of Kazakhstan. I only
got to see portion of the movie, before my wife broke the DVD in half!
Considering that she is from neighboring Uzbekistan, I can understand her
reaction. (Though I have been tempted to buy the DVD and watch again)

The movie put Kazakhstan in world map, though not in the way Kazakh’s would
have preferred. The Kazakh govt. started a world wide criticism of the movie
and how Kazakhstan is NOT how the movie portrays it to be, especially because
they have been trying to attract foreign investment of late.

The movie itself is a comedy and no one should “learn” about another nation by
just watching comedy, fictional or thriller movies. (Unless you are watching a
movie like Gandhi of course). But so often we know so little about others, that
just by watching movie or TV program, we try to draw our conclusion. When I was
teaching at a private university, my students asked me ridiculous questions
about US simply based on movie or TV show. This is not different in US either;
while watching a Hindi movie, an American friend of mine seriously asked us
(along with some other friends from India) if couples really dance and sing
like this in public back home. Our answer was of course, this is the only way
you can attract opposite sex. (We were only kidding).

So why talking about Borat and Kazakhstan?
I just learned something new today about Kazakhstan that I didn’t learn from
Borat.

Did you know when the Soviets started their nuclear testing in 1949 they chose
eastern Kazakhstan as its testing ground? The testing continued till August 29,
1991. What happened during these decades of testing is a tale of horror of
unimaginable proportion.

This should server as a reminder for those who crave nuclear arsenal. But more
importantly, remind everyone how cruel and barbaric the Soviet regime was; and
sadly how so many Muslim nations lined them up behind the Soviets. No wonder so
many of the Muslim nations turned out to be so autocratic, authoritarian and
brutal like the Soviets.

I sincerely hope, Muslims who think that Russia might be their savior in their
fight against the “west” will rethink about their alliance.

Lest not also forget, what Soviet and Russia did to the vast Muslim region of
central Asia.

Editor's note: In our Behind the Scenes series, CNN correspondents share their
experiences in covering news and analyze the stories behind the events. CNN's
Matthew Chance was given rare access to Kazakh villages where above-ground
nuclear tests have left generations scarred. Here, he describes what he saw for
CNN.com.
SEMEY, Kazakhstan (CNN) -- Kazakhstan's nuclear orphans are a distressing sight.
The first child I met in the local orphanage was lying limply in his crib. His
giant, pale head was perched on his tiny shoulders, covered in bed sores, like
a grotesquely painted paper-mâché mask. Peering out, a pair of tiny black eyes
darted around.
It took me a few seconds to understand what I was seeing. The doctor told me he
was 4 years old.
Through the bars in the next crib, I saw another child, twisted with
deformities. His fragile legs and arms turned in impossible contortions.
These are the children of Kazakhstan's terrifying nuclear past.
Decades of Soviet nuclear testing unleashed a plague of birth defects. When the
Soviet Union tested its nuclear devices, it chose eastern Kazakhstan, one of
its remotest, most desolate areas. But no one bothered to evacuate the people
living there.
The testing began in 1949 at a site known as Polygon and continued until 1989.
According to the Nuclear Threat Initiative, there were 456 tests, including 116
nuclear bombs tested above ground. The Polygon site officially closed on August
29, 1991 -- 16 years ago this week.
Local officials say there were hundreds of thousands of people, possibly as
many as a million, who lived in the region during the nuclear testing. The end
of the Cold War might have ended this dark chapter, but thousands are still
paying a terrible price.

The people living in the villages scattered throughout this former nuclear
testing zone have been through the unspeakable. Seriqkaisha is 62 years old.
She remembers watching the mushroom clouds as a child.

Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Who is Dr. Norman Finkelstein?

2007-08-31 Thread Nashid Abdul-Khaaliq
This is for those who may not know who Dr. Norman Finkelstein is. The following
is a report done by Dr. Henry Lindner who attended a speech given by this great
Jewish Professor. It is quite enlightening:Dear Friends,

I had the great pleasure of seeing Norman Finkelstein lecture on the
Israeli/Palestinian conflict on 13 November at Binghamton University.
Binghamton is Norman's alma mater and just a 60-minute drive from my home. He
sat behind the podium with a beautiful smile on his face as he watched the
audience pile in. Our group of two "adult" couples stood out in an auditorium
filled with college kids. We sat front and center. About one-third of the
audience appeared to be Jewish. He spoke resolutely and passionately,
unfolding the long sequence of events in the history of Israel and Palestine.
He made eye contact with every person in the audience.

The text of his talk, with very useful references, can be found at
://www.normanfinkelstein.com/id128.htm I believe that this is the single best
article-length introduction to this conflict ever written.

The speech was most remarkable in how Norman used direct quotes from Israeli
officials and historians to dismiss so many of the myths surrounding this
conflict. He made it very clear that the Zionists
were, from the beginning, committed to "the way of transfer" to deal with the
"population problem". He quotes numerous observers and historians to support
the argument that it was the Palestinians' real
and justified fear of expulsion that caused them to resist and attack Jews in
the pre-war years, not some irrational "anti-semitism". He recounts how in 1967
the transfer option was no longer available, so
Israel has attempted the "apartheid option" instead. He recounts Israel's long
and bloody efforts to avoid a two-state solution. He graphically recounts the
violent Israeli response to every Palestinian/Arab two-state "peace
offensive"--from the 1982 invasion
of Lebanon to the recent Operation Defensive Shield and bombing of Gaza. He
highlighted a few salient facts: Israel mourns the deaths of 20,000 Jews,
mostly combatants, in the last 120 years of
struggle. By comparison, Israel killed 20,000 Palestinians and Lebanese, mostly
civilians, in just four months in the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. 5000 Israeli
settlers in the Jordan Valley consume an
amount of water that is 75% of the total water consumed by 2 million
Palestinians in the West Bank.

Norman recounted how the Oslo accords were basically an attempt to create a
permanent apartheid regime, with Arafat lording it over the Palestinians as an
agent of Israel, meanwhile enjoying the trappings
of statehood and enriching himself and his cronies. In the end, Arafat, corrupt
as he was, had the courage, or the fear of his own people, to refuse the Barak
bantustan plan.

With the apartheid option dead, Norman believes that the situation is moving
tragically towards a new attempt at the "transfer option". He recalled that in
1989, Benjamin Netanyahu (my Antichrist frontrunner)
urged the Israeli government to exploit politically favorable circumstances
like the Tiananmen massacre to carry out "large-scale"expulsions when the
"damage to Israel would have been relatively small." Norman fears this horrible
event may occur during the US
attack on Iraq, after international journalists and activists have been
expelled from Israel and the West Bank. He hopes that some combination of
Palestinian non-violent resistance and international pressure will bring an
Israeli withdrawal, but one can sense that he doesn't believe it will happen.
He urged everyone of us to do anything we could to prevent it--so that we would
not feel that we had known it was coming and did nothing.

After speaking for nearly two hours, he took questions for an hour. It was a
marvel to behold his grip on the subject and his skill in providing the right
response for that particular individual. He knew all the standard
questions/accusations that would be brought by the Jewish members of the
audience. He made a point of picking them out
from among the many hands raised and he seemed to relish their angry remarks
and questions. His skill is understandable, since he's been lecturing on the
Israel/Palestine since he was a young man. In fact
he and his mother lectured together. She would deal with the Nazi/Jewish
Holocaust, then he would deal with the Israel/Palestinian conflict. He said
that audiences always loved his mother's presentation but hated his--even
though they both were examples of
ethnic cleansing.

When accosted with the classical "the land belongs to the Jews" argument. He
asked the questionner how he would feel if a man showed up at his door one day
and said "according to my Bible, your house and land belong to me." "Would you
leave?", he asked.

In response to complaints about Palestinian anti-semitism and violence, he made
an analogy to the American Indians. He re

Saudi to introduce pre-marriage HIV test

 Middle east Online    2007-08-30

From 2008, future brides, grooms will have to be tested for both HIV,
hepatitis.

RIYADH - Couples wanting to marry in conservative Saudi Arabia will have to
undergo tests for the HIV virus, which can cause AIDS, starting next year, a
newspaper reported on Wednesday.

From 2008, future brides and grooms will have to be tested for both the virus
and hepatitis in one of more than 20 centres to be set up across the kingdom,
Al-Watan said, quoting the health ministry's assistant under-secretary for
preventive medicine, Khaled al-Zahrani.

If either of them tests HIV positive and they still want to marry, the case
will be examined in conjunction with the justice ministry, Zahrani said,
without elaborating.

Nearly 11,000 cases of HIV/AIDS were reported in Saudi Arabia between 1984,
when the first case was diagnosed, and the end of 2005, according to a health
ministry official.

Of the 10,924 cases diagnosed, Saudis numbered 2,005 and expatriates 8,919, the
official said in November 2005.

Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Friday Nasiha - Issue #431: "Al-Araf (The Heights) - Chapter 7: Verses 106-108", "Relieving Distress of Others" & "Integralization" - from YoungMuslims

2007-08-31 Thread Mohamed \(Imtiaz\) Bhikoo
Friday Nasiha - Issue #431
Jumada al tHAANI 7, 1428, A.H. - June 22, 2007, C.E.
---
Living the Quran
Al-Araf (The Heights) - Chapter 7: Verses 106-108
Miraculous Signs
"(Fir'aun) said: "If indeed thou hast come with a Sign, show it forth, if thou
tellest the truth." Then (Musa) threw his rod, and behold! it was a serpent,
plain (for all to see)! And he drew out his hand, and behold! it was white to
all beholders!"

Moses was granted these two miraculous signs in order to provide testimony to
his being a Messenger of God, the creator and sovereign of the universe.
Whenever the Prophets introduced themselves as God's Message-bearers, people
asked them to produce some miraculous sign, to perform something supernatural.
In response to those demands the Prophets produced what the Quran terms as
'signs', and which are called 'miracles' by theologians.

Those who tend to play down the supernatural character of such signs or
miracles, and who try to explain them in terms of natural laws of causation, in
fact attempt to build a mid-way house between believing and disbelieving in the
statements of the Quran. Such an approach can hardly be considered reasonable.

What it does demonstrate, however, is how such people can be pulled in two
opposite directions. On the one hand, they are not inclined to believe in a
Book which abounds in narrations of a supernatural kind. On the other hand,
being born followers of their ancestral religion, they are not inclined to
reject the Book which carries supernatural narrations.

With regard to miracles, there are two basic questions that people should ask
themselves. Did God, after creating the universe and establishing a system of
natural causations therein, suspend Himself such that it is no longer possible
for Him to interfere in the workings of the universe? Or does He still hold the
reins to His realm in His owns Hands so that His command is enforced every
moment, and He does retain the power to alter the shape of things and the
normal course of events - either partially or fully, - as and when He wills?

It is impossible for those who respond in the affirmative to the first question
to accept the idea of miracles. For clearly miracles do not fit in with their
concept of God and the universe. Honesty demands that instead of indulging in
far-fetched explanations of Quranic statements on miracles, such people should
clearly declare that they do not believe in the Quran. For quite obviously the
Quran is explicit, even quite definite in affirming the former concept of God.

As for those who, being convinced by Quranic arguments, respond in the
affirmative to the second question regarding God and the universe, for them
there is no difficulty in accepting miracles.

Understanding the Prophet's Life
Relieving Distress of Others
One of the greatest things that will relieve a person's distress on the Day of
Resurrection is his efforts in this world to relieve the distress of those who
are in distress, and to help those who are in need, and to make things easy for
those who are in difficulty, and to overlook the mistakes of those who err. In
Muslim it is narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah
(sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Whoever relieves a believer of distress in this world, Allah will relieve him
of some of the distress of the Day of Resurrection. Whoever makes things easy
for those who are in difficulty, Allah will make things easy for him in this
world and in the next. Whoever conceals (the faults of) a Muslim in this world,
Allah will conceal him (his faults) in this world and in the Hereafter. Allah
will help the slave so long as the slave helps his brother." [Mishkaat
al-Masaabeeh, 1/71, hadith no. 204.]

Bukhari narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah (peace be
upon him) said: "The Muslim is the brother of his fellow-Muslim; he should not
mistreat him or let him down. Whoever meets the needs of his brother, Allah
will meet his needs, and whoever relieves a Muslim of some distress, Allah will
relieve him of some of the distress of the Day of Resurrection. Whoever
conceals (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will conceal him (his faults) in this
world and the next." [Bukhari: Kitaab al-Mazaalim, Baab laa Yazlim al-Muslim

behavior" prevented a Chicago-bound American Airlines flight from departing San
Diego, police said Wednesday.
Flight 590, scheduled to depart at 11 p.m. Tuesday, left its gate about 11:15
but returned to the boarding area after the woman, who was traveling with at
least one child, indicated she wanted to get off the airplane. The flight then
was unable to make Lindbergh Field's 11:30 p.m. curfew for departures, said
Irene McCormack, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Harbor Police.

The flight, carrying 126 passengers, was rescheduled for midmorning Wednesday
and arrived in Chicago in the afternoon, an American Airlines spokesman said.

McCormack said it is unusual for planes to return to the gate. She said it's
usually for medical and mechanical problems or a disturbance.

The woman first complained to the flight crew that four to seven men were
possibly speaking Arabic in the boarding area. The woman added that they "had
odd behavior." The crew decided to return to the boarding area because the
woman indicated she wanted off the plane.

The American Airlines spokesman indicated the plane returned to its gates
because of a dispute between passengers. The spokesman didn't provide details
on the dispute.

A Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman said it returned because
of "suspicious activity on board the plane."

Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in
Chicago, was upset about the airline's actions. He said television reporters
told him that six Iraqi Americans were detained after a passenger became
uncomfortable with the men speaking Arabic.

"It is one thing to flag suspicious behavior, but to flag a global language? We
are deplaning people for who they are, not what they do," Rehab said.

The Associated Press reported Defense Training Systems had hired the men to
train U.S. Marines at Camp Pendleton in California.

McCormack said no one was detained in the incident.
