15th Day of TARAVEEH In the third section of Surah an-Noor the believers were asked not to follow the footsteps of Shaitaan and the mention of the forgiveness of those who were overtaken by the influence of the propaganda and tricks of the hypocrite is made. We can never repay Allah for everything we have, yet we still blatantly commit sins both big and small: whether it's backbiting, hurting other human beings, not standing up for the truth, treating our family badly, lying, doing good deeds to show off, cheating, etc. Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said he would rather shed two tears from the fear of Allah than give a thousand dinars in charity. And the most telling example of a man who few would think would cry because of Allah is Umar, may Allah be pleased with him. He was known for being strong, fearless, and uncompromising when it came to matters of faith. Yet, Abdullah ibn Isa said that Umar had two black streaks on his face because of constant weeping. He feared Allah so much that he once said, "If someone announced from the heavens that everybody will enter Paradise except one person, I would fear that person would be me." Umar was one of the strongest believers. Yet he cried and feared Allah. And Abu Bakr, he was simply known for his crying. These people loved to serve human beings in the day and spent time begging God to save humanity at night. May Allah be pleased with them. Let's be more contemplative and pray for an awareness of and forgiveness for our sins, as well as softness in our hearts. If Umar the brave and pious did it, we have even more need and urgency to do it. Human beings are in turmoil. Connecting with God with our hearts and begging for His Mercy for His Creation will bring us Closer to Him and human beings. Source: "Crying in Front of Allah-It's not impossible" - Abdul Malik Mujahid Understanding the Prophet's Life Purifying the Heart In a hadith narrated by Zayd bin Thabit and Ibn Masud, who were both among the scholars from the companions, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Three things purify the heart of a Muslim: the sincerity in working for the sake of Allah, taking up the task of advising the rulers, and not departing from the group of Muslims." In order to implement this principle on a personal note, I say that it is not my wish for any Muslim to be harmed because of me overtly or covertly. This applies to all Muslims, but more specifically to our companions and acquaintances. Neither do I want any of them to be blamed or condemned, as they are still worthy of honour and respect. Indeed, man does not escape being classified into one of three categories: a correct mujtahid, a wrong one, and a sinner. The first is rewarded and praised; the second is rewarded yet forgiven for his blunder. Regarding the third, I ask Allah to forgive him, us and the rest of the Muslims. Therefore, we shall turn a new leaf on those who had erred and not fulfilled this aforementioned principle. Yet I know of some who say "this man erred" and "this man did not do what he should have", or "the Shaykh was harmed because of this man." Those words that have harmed some brothers I do not condone, nor do I pardon those who utter them. You should also know that we are all joining to assist one another. It is obligatory upon us to aid each other, more so now than before. So, whosoever thinks that harming some brothers as a result of the hardship experienced in Damascus and Egypt is justified is mistaken. It is true that a believer to a believer is like the two hands - one cleans the other. And it is also true that some kinds of dirt can only be washed away by hard scrubbing, yet this treatment will be justified when the outcome appears to be the restoration of that brotherly love. Let no one think that the believer can be miserly in helping their brothers, and in aiding them. If some of our companions had neglected us before and they came to aid us now, their status will rise higher than before. * * * * * * *Why Pay Zakat * ZAKAT (almsgiving) is a required charity of a Muslim. It is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is given by free Muslims (not slaves), who have a certain amount of wealth. "...And perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, and lend to Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you send before you for yourselves (i.e. Nawafil non-obligatory acts of worship: prayers, charity, fasting, Haj and 'Umrah), you will certainly find it with Allah, better and greater in reward. And seek Forgiveness of Allah. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful." *(Qur'an 73:20).* In the verse quoted above, and at numerous other places in the Qur'an, Muslims are directed to pay Zakat from their wealth. Zakat in Islam is a method of wealth redistribution. It makes wealth circulate in the body of the nation. The Qur'an demands that individuals take material responsibility for poverty and suffering in the Muslim community (Ummah). That is why the Qur'anic revelation demands that each person give up a certain amount of material wealth to support the poor, the indigent, the sick, and the suffering. Generally, charity in Islam is of two types: voluntary and obligatory. A Muslim should pay a certain percentage of his wealth every year; this is Zakat, which is obligatory charity. Other than Zakat, any other money a Muslim spends for the sake of Allah is voluntary charity (Sadaqa). All Muslims, rich or poor are to pay charity proportionally. Muslims should acquire wealth with the intention of spending it on their own needs, and the needs of others.Allah says: "And whatsoever you spend of anything (in the cause of Allah), He will replace it. He is the Best of those who grants sustenance." *(Qur'an 34:39)* There are also many warnings against those who do not spend for the sake of Allah: "And spend something (in charity) out of the substance which We have bestowed on you, before death should come to any of you and he should say, O my Lord! Why did You not give me respite for a little while? I should then have given (largely) in charity, and I should have been one of the doers of good? But to no soul will Allah grant respite when the time appointed (for it) has come; and Allah is well-acquainted with (all) that yoy do." *(Qur'an 63:11). * ** The Muslim, who gives out Zakat, affirms the truth that nothing is dearer to him in life than the love of Allah and that he is fully prepared to sacrifice everything for Allah's sake. There is no burden of obligation on one who receives Zakat, and there must be a sense of thankfulness and gratitude on the part of the giver, since he has been enabled by the recipient to discharge his obligation that he owes to Allah and society. Zakat is the wealth given in the way of Allah to obtain purity of heart and to obtain the blessings of Allah. The root of the word Zakat in Arabic has two meanings:"purity" and "growth." "Take alms from their wealth (O Prophet!) in order to purify them with it." *(Qur'an 9:103)* The word (zakat) was specifically used for the wealth a Muslim gives to those in authority to meet the collective requirements of a state. It is evident from the Qur'an that like prayer, Zakat has always remained an essential ingredient of the Shari'ah (Islamic legislation) given to Prophets of Allah. Zakat also pleases Allah and strengthens one's soul: "And the likeness of those who spend their wealth in search of Allah's pleasure, and for the strengthening of their souls, is as the likeness of a garden on a height. The rainstorm smites it and it brings forth its fruit twofold. And if the rainstorm smite it not, then the shower. The month is like this and this, i.e. sometimes of 29 days and sometimes of thirty days".* *14.Not to fast a day or two before Ramadan* *Hadith 3.138 Narrated by Abu Huraira (Radhiallah hu Taala anhu)* The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, "*None of you should fast a day or two before the month of Ramadan unless he has the habit of fasting (Nawafil) (and if his fasting coincides with that day) then he can fast that day.*" *15.'You are permitted to go to your wives* *Hadith 3.139 Narrated by Al Bara (Radhiallah hu Taala anhu)* It was the custom among the companions of Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) that if any of them was fasting and the food was presented (for breaking his fast), but he slept before eating, he would not eat that night and the following day till sunset. Qais bin Sirma-al-Ansari* *(Radhiallah hu Taala anhu)* *was fasting and came to his wife at the time of Iftar (breaking one's fast) and asked her whether she had anything to eat. She replied, "*No, but I would go and bring some for you.*" He used to do hard work during the day, so he was overwhelmed by sleep and slept. When his wife came and saw him, she said, "*Disappointment for you.*" When it was midday on the following day, he fainted and the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) was informed about the whole matter and the following verses were revealed: "*You are permitted To go to your wives (for sexual relation) At the night of fasting.*" So, they were overjoyed by it. And then Allah also revealed: *"And eat and drink Until the white thread Of dawn appears to you Distinct from the black thread (of the night)."* *(2.187)* *16.'And eat and drink until the while thread of dawn'* *Hadith 3.140 Narrated by Adi bin Hatim (Radhiallah hu Taala anhu)* When the above verses were revealed: "*Until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread,*"I took two (hair) strings, one black and the other white, and kept them under my pillow and went on looking at them throughout the night but could not make anything out of it. So, the next morning I went to Allah's Apostle and told him the whole story. He explained to me, "*That verse means the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the dawn.*" *Hadith 3.141 Narrated by Sahl bin Saud (Radhiallah hu Taala anhu)* When the following verses were revealed: "*eat and drink until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread*"and "of dawn" was not revealed, some people who intended to fast, tied black and white threads to their legs and went on eating till they differentiated between the two. Allah then revealed the words, 'of dawn', and it became clear that meant night and day *17."The Adhan should not stop you from getting meals"* *Hadith 3.142 Narrated by Aisha (Radhiallah hu Taala anhaa)* Bilal used to pronounce the Adhan at night, so Allah's Apostle said, "*Carry on taking your meals (eat and drink) till Ibn Um Maktum pronounces the Adhan, for he does not pronounce it till it is dawn*". *18.Taking meals hurriedly before dawn* *Hadith 3.143 Narrated by Sahl bin Sad (Radhiallah hu Taala anhu)* *I used to take my Suhur meals with my family and then hurry up for presenting myself for the (Fajr) prayer with Allah's Apostle.* *19.Interval between the end of Suhur and Fajr* *Hadith 3.144 Narrated by Anas (Radhiallah hu Taala anhu)* Zaid bin Thabit* *(Radhiallah hu Taala anhu) said, "*We took the Suhur with the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). Then he stood for the prayer.*" I asked, "*What was the interval between the Suhur and the Adhan?*" He replied, "*The interval was sufficient to recite fifty verses of the Quran.* " *20.Suhur is not compulsory* *Hadith 3.145 Narrated by Abdullah (Radhiallah hu Taala anhu)* The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) fasted for days continuously; the people also did the same but it was difficult for them.
