Bismillah [IslamCity] Fasting Six days of Shawwal

2007-10-17 Thread ***hajikhan***

Abu Ayyoub (Radiallaho Anho) reported that
the Messenger of Allah, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam said
Whoever fasts the month of Ramadhan and then follows it by fasting six days
during the month of Shawwal will be rewarded as if he had fasted the entire
year.
[Muslim, at-Tirmithi, Ibn Majah, Abu Dawood and Ahmad by way of Jabir].
These days can be anytime during the month of Shawwal except the first day
because
it is unlawful to fast the day of Eid. These days do not have to be at
beginning of the
month nor do they have to be consecutive. Hence, Muslims should seize this
opportunity and fast these six days to get Allah's reward.
Why the fasting of six days of Shawal after Ramadhan equates that of the
whole year?
Some `Ulamaa' say that the good deed is rewarded ten times.
Thus fasting six days is like fasting 60 days, added to 30 days of Ramadhan
times 10
  (i.e. 300) it makes it a year.

Bismillah [IslamCity] American Islamic Congress to Shed Light on MB Military Tribunal-

2007-10-17 Thread S A Hannan
AIC to Shed Light on MB Military Tribunal

Abdul Rahman Mansour, IkhwanWeb - Cairo, Egypt

http://www.ikhwanweb.com/Article.asp?ID=14375LevelID=2SectionID=0

Tuesday, October 16, 2007
The American Islamic Congress (AIC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to
building interfaith and interethnic understanding. The organization grew out of
the ashes of September 11. It believes American Muslims must take the lead in
building tolerance and fostering a respect for human rights and social justice
at home and throughout the Muslim world. Within the Muslim community, its
members are building a coalition around the agenda of unequivocal denunciation
of terrorism, extremism, and hate speech. Reaching out to all people of
conscience, they try to promote a genuine interfaith dialogue and educate about
the diversity within Islam

The organization stirred many questions after it opened a branch in the
Egyptian capital Cairo. The organization has other branches in Iraq and it
adopts the so called international commitments in development programs that
include helping to rebuild the Iraqi school system by training teachers,
restoring school buildings, and providing direct aid to students.

The organization launched a new campaign - called Hands Across the Mideast -
to unite Americans and Middle East reformers to promote civil rights in the
region.

We aim to correct the image of Muslims in the West after the painful 11
September attacks, said Dalia Ziada, the Chief Executive of the American
Islamic Congress (AIC) in Cairo.

We also support womans rights and freedom of opinion and expression in Egypt
said the young human rights activist.

Dalia denied that the organization is politically motivated and said that her
organization is a non-governmental and non-profit organization.

Ziadas view towards the military tribunal trying the Muslim Brotherhood (MB)
leaders, reflects the view of an organization that may create a new reality
among Egyptian civil society organizations. She rejects the military tribunals
and said that her organization may establish a campaign which Ziada called
Etkallim (Speak Out) aiming to give space to many Egyptians whose opinions are
neglected in the Egyptian political circles.

We want them to to move and call for their rights peacefully said Ziada, the
Chief Executive of the American Islamic Congress (AIC).

The young activist said that the campaign, scheduled to be held two months
later, aims to shed light on the military tribunal against the Muslim
Brotherhood leaders. She said that the campaign will call for trying those
referred to the military tribunal in front of a civil court.

The government must deal with the Muslim Brotherhood in a better way. It
shouldnt have referred them to the military tribunal, added Ziada.

Zeinab Al Sweg, the executive director of the American Islamic Congress (AIC)
has said in earlier statements around establishing a branch for the
organization in Cairo: The target from establishing a representing branch for
the American Islamic Congress (AIC) in Egypt because it is the heart of the
Arab world. It is a serious step to cooperate with local and international
organizations working in Egypt and the Middle East in general to spread human
rights principles, specially womans rights, freedom of expression, religious
tolerance and other other violations that have become a status quo in the
Middle East.

The American Islamic Congress (AIC) also puts on its agenda shedding light on
the conditions of Egyptian bloggers.

Many bloggers are harassed and arrested by Egyptian security services.

Karim Amer, an Egyptian blogger who is currently in prison, has been defended
by Dalia Ziada after Egyptian security authorities accused him of defaming
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and of contempt to Islam.

The organization said in its official statement that its work in Cairo is based
on three main three axes: Defending freedom of speech for bloggers and human
rights activists, spreading nonviolence principles in defending civil freedoms,
and rejecting daily violations against womans rights. These are done in
coordination with local and international organizations working in Egypt and
the region.

Dalia Ziada who runs Cairo branch of the American Islamic Congress (AIC) is a
young human rights activist 25 years who drew the attention of the AIC in her
participation in the competition a postponed dream sponsored by Hamsa
Initiative. She participated with an essay about womans rights in Egypt, after
which she attended a number of conferences and workshops held by the
organization in the Middle East around violence, religious tolerance and civil
rights. Ziada contributed with a key role in the campaign defending Egyptian
young detained blogger Karim Amer who is currently in Egyptian prisons.

It is mentioned that the American Islamic Congress (AIC) is the first US
Islamic organization establish a

Muslims in America today seem to have lost the right to be
individuals. We are treated as a collectivity - responsible as a group
for any crime committed by another Muslim or done in the name of Islam.

Shortly after 9/11, I wrote an article stating that Muslims have the
greatest obligation to reject terrorism and political violence
committed in the name of Islam. I still believe this is the case.
Islam does not have a centralized authority; there is no universally
recognized council of scholars or clerics who speak on behalf of all
Muslims.

With freedom from clerical authority, however, comes the
responsibility to engage in the debate over the true meaning of Islam.
Islamic law states that silence is an indication of consent. If
Muslims do not reject the perverted interpretations of the Qur'an
proffered by terrorists, they will have shirked their responsibility
to define the real meaning of Islam.

At the same time, clarifying our own position does not mean that we
have to speak out against each and every statement issued by
terrorists or every criminal action taken by groups claiming to
represent Muslim interests. Once we have defined what we stand for,
and what we stand against, then any particular action that violates
those guidelines are clearly rejected by us. American Muslim
organizations have made extraordinary efforts to publicize their
rejection of terrorism and extremism in the name of Islam: we have
organized petitions, written fatwas and position papers, distributed
brochures, held conferences, organized press briefings, published
op-eds, spoken on the radio and television.

Still, we are asked, Why have moderate Muslims not spoken out against
the extremists? We have spoken, but we have not been heard-primarily
because good news does not get much coverage.

Even worse, we have spoken, but we have not been listened to. There
are many people who are ideologically opposed to Islam-to the most
benign interpretation of Islam-because of their own extremist
religious or political ideologies. No matter what conscientious
Muslims do to live as peaceful citizens who contribute to the welfare
of society, these groups will attack us and our religion.

Most objectionable is what I call the, non-Muslim Islamic
fundamentalist. What I mean by this is a non-Muslim who applies a
literalistic, decontextualized hermeneutic to the Qur'an and Islamic
tradition. This is not how I read my scripture (maybe it is how they
read theirs), so who are they to tell me that this is what Islam
really says?

Being judged as a group, rather than as individuals, also means that
the negative experience of one Muslim is considered to be
representative of all Muslims and all of Islam. I do not deny the
right of any individual to tell his or her own story. We all have that
right, and I must learn from the pain, hurt and anger of women and men
who were mistreated in the name of Islam.

But these negative experiences are not shared by all Muslims - indeed,
not by most Muslims. This is why such authors have little or no
constituencies within the Muslim community - because large numbers of
Muslims do not feel they represent their interests or perspectives.

The burden of collective guilt, the oppressive weight of stereotyping,
and the violence of hateful anti-Muslim discourse is difficult to
bear. It is even more difficult to see how this affects our youth.

But there is hope. Hope lies in the goodness of ordinary Americans who
try to overcome their prejudices and reach out to their Muslim
neighbors. Hope lies in the solidarity shown by other groups - like
Japanese Americans - who have faced similar situations. Hope lies in
the extraordinary moral leadership shown by many American religious
leaders to guide their congregations to the path of understanding and
compassion.

More than anything, I see these challenges as opportunities to examine
myself and my community, to see if we are responding with enough
courage and moral leadership when we witness discrimination against
others. Are we able to avoid burdening other groups with collective
guilt? The Qur'anic revelation, no soul bears the sins of another is
directed first at our community. We are all human, and all of us have
to struggle with our own selfishness, prejudice and will to power.

As a Muslim, my struggle for my community's rights should be only the
starting point of a wider struggle - a struggle for the dignity of all
people. Being a Muslim in America today means having the opportunity
to work towards this goal in solidarity with compassionate individuals

Bismillah [IslamCity] Fury at DNA pioneer's theory: Africans are less intelligent than Westerners

2007-10-17 Thread Ismail Kashkash
Fury at DNA pioneer's theory: Africans are less intelligent than Westerners
Celebrated scientist attacked for race comments: All our social policies are
based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours - whereas all the
testing says not really By Cahal Milmo Published: 17 October 2007

One of the world's most eminent scientists was embroiled in an
extraordinary row last night after he claimed that black people were less
intelligent than white people and the idea that equal powers of reason were
shared across racial groups was a delusion.

James Watson, a Nobel Prize winner for his part in the unravelling of DNA who
now runs one of America's leading scientific research institutions, drew
widespread condemnation for comments he made ahead of his arrival in Britain
today for a speaking tour at venues including the Science Museum in London.

The 79-year-old geneticist reopened the explosive debate about race and
science in a newspaper interview in which he said Western policies towards
African countries were wrongly based on an assumption that black people were as
clever as their white counterparts when testing suggested the contrary. He
claimed genes responsible for creating differences in human intelligence could
be found within a decade.

The newly formed Equality and Human Rights Commission, successor to the
Commission for Racial Equality, said it was studying Dr Watson's remarks in
full. Dr Watson told The Sunday Times that he was inherently gloomy about the
prospect of Africa because all our social policies are based on the fact that
their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not
really. He said there was a natural desire that all human beings should be
equal but people who have to deal with black employees find this not true.

His views are also reflected in a book published next week, in which he
writes: There is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities
of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have
evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some
universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so.

The furore echoes the controversy created in the 1990s by The Bell Curve, a
book co-authored by the American political scientist Charles Murray, which
suggested differences in IQ were genetic and discussed the implications of a
racial divide in intelligence. The work was heavily criticised across the
world, in particular by leading scientists who described it as a work of
scientific racism.

Dr Watson arrives in Britain today for a speaking tour to publicise his
latest book, Avoid Boring People: Lessons from a Life in Science. Among his
first engagements is a speech to an audience at the Science Museum organised by
the Dana Centre, which held a discussion last night on the history of
scientific racism.

Critics of Dr Watson said there should be a robust response to his views
across the spheres of politics and science. Keith Vaz, the Labour chairman of
the Home Affairs Select Committee, said: It is sad to see a scientist of such
achievement making such baseless, unscientific and extremely offensive
comments. I am sure the scientific community will roundly reject what appear to
be Dr Watson's personal prejudices.

These comments serve as a reminder of the attitudes which can still exists
at the highest professional levels.

The American scientist earned a place in the history of great scientific
breakthroughs of the 20th century when he worked at the University of Cambridge
in the 1950s and 1960s and formed part of the team which discovered the
structure of DNA. He shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for medicine with his British
colleague Francis Crick and New Zealand-born Maurice Wilkins.

But despite serving for 50 years as a director of the Cold Spring Harbour
Laboratory on Long Island, considered a world leader in research into cancer
and genetics, Dr Watson has frequently courted controversy with some of his
views on politics, sexuality and race. The respected journal Science wrote in
1990: To many in the scientific community, Watson has long been something of a
wild man, and his colleagues tend to hold their collective breath whenever he
veers from the script.

In 1997, he told a British newspaper that a woman should have the right to
abort her unborn child if tests could determine it would be homosexual. He
later insisted he was talking about a hypothetical choice which could never
be applied. He has also suggested a link between skin colour and sex drive,
positing the theory that black people have higher libidos, and argued in favour
of genetic screening and engineering on the basis that stupidity could one
day be cured. He has claimed that beauty could be genetically manufactured,
saying: People say it would be terrible if we made all girls

Bismillah [IslamCity] Ramadhaan is Over - from MAW

2007-10-17 Thread Mohamed (Imtiaz) Bhikoo
Bismillahir Rahmaan Nir Rahim
3 Shawwaal 1428 / 15 October 2007

Ramadhaan is Over

Early on the day of Eid, Muslims throughout the world perform a special Eid
Salaah. This is a silent reminder that even on the day of celebration and
happiness a Muslim can never forget Allah Azza Wajal. A Muslim does not
remember Allah only on auspicious days or nights. Allah has to be in our hearts
and minds perpetually, during times of sadness and happiness, during difficulty
and ease. The Eid Salaah teaches us that the spirit and training during the
month of Ramadhaan must not be wasted after the great month ends, by indulging
in sin. Although the warmth and barakah of Ramadhaan has left us we should
remain strong the steadfast against Shaitaan.

The Quran gives the example of a foolish woman in Makkah who used to spin
cotton during the day and then undo all her effort at night. And be not like
her who undoes the thread which she has spun after it has become strong.
(Surah Nahal, Verse 92)

If during Ramadhaan Salaah was performed punctually, why should Salaah be
discarded after Ramadhaan is over?
If in Ramadhaan the television was switched off , why should it be switched on
after Eid?
If sinful places were avoided during Ramadhaan why should they be frequented
after Ramadhaan?
If during Ramadhaan the Quran was in our hands and on our tongues why should
the Quran be returned to the shelf after Ramadhaan?

May Allah keep us steadfast and may He grant us death on Imaan. Aameen.

Six Fasts in the Month of Shawwaal

The Prophet, Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: Whoever completes the fasts of
Ramadhaan then adds to them the fast of six days in the month of Shawwaal, it
will be like fasting for the whole year. (Sahih Muslim)

This hadith describes the great reward of six extra fasts in the month of
Shawwaal. These six fasts should preferably be kept immediately after the day
of Eid. However, if they are kept later during the month it is hoped that the
reward will still be achieved.

Some scholars have given a beautiful explanation of this hadith. They mention
that Allah says in the Quran : He that does good shall have ten times as much
to his credit. (Surah An'aam, Verse 160) Thus, the 30 fasts of Ramadhaan will
be equivalent in reward to 300 and the 6 extra fasts will be equivalent to 60.
The combined reward will now be 360, which equals the number of days in the
Islamic year.
