‘Implement Sachar Commission report’

Staff Correspondent

PDP is planning to revive its presence in the State

-
‘The report will benefit minority communities’
A conference is scheduled to be held on January 1

-

MANGALORE: Abdul Nasir Madani, chairman, People’s Democratic Party (PDP),
said here on Saturday that his party would extend its political presence in
Karnataka and would set up a State committee in the next six months.
Stating that an ad-hoc committee would be set up within two months, Mr.
Madani told presspersons that steps were being taken to re-establish the party
in the State. The PDP had last contested the election for Ullal Assembly seat
in 1995-96 with Ismail Shafi as its candidate. Mr. Madani expressed doubts on
the prospects of the Union and State governments implementing the Sachar
Committee recommendations. Terming the report as factual and beneficial for the
minority community, Mr. Madani said governments had not shown the resolve to
implement the commission’s recommendations. Mr. Madani had stopped here on his
way to Kasargod to attend a PDP rally there.
Apprehension

Expressing scepticism on the Government’s ability to implement such reports,
Mr. Madani said most of such reports ended up in debates in academic circles.
Lauding the move by the Kerala Government to set up a State-level committee to
monitor the implementation of Sachar Commission report, he said government
announcements should be followed by action.
Parrying a question on his nearly a decade-long incarceration for his alleged
involvement in the Coimbatore bomb blast case, Mr. Madani said: “I want to
forget that chapter in my life. I do not want to conduct a post-mortem into the
incident for it may create a bad situation. It may cause political turmoil or
create a law and order situation”.
However, he termed his imprisonment as “political vendetta”.
Future plans

On the political plans of his party, Mr. Madani said the PDP would organise a
national-level social justice conference at Kochi on January 1, 2008. “About
five lakh people, including 1,000 delegates from all over the country, will
attend the conference. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tamil Nadu Chief
Minister M. Karunanidhi and other leaders are likely to attend it,” he said.

The Houston office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations
(CAIR-Houston) calls on radio listeners of all faiths to contact companies
that advertise on Savage's program to express their concerns about the
host's anti-Muslim bigotry.

CAIR recently reported that Michael Savage on his radio program "The Savage
Nation" screamed attacks on Muslims, Islam, and the Quran, Islam's revealed
text, during his October 29, 2007, program.

*JCPenny* recently responded to request to pull advertising from the "Savage
Nation" radio show. In the response an official stated that the placement of
JCPenny ads during the show was unacceptable.

Other companies that have responded to requests to drop ads from Savage's
program include *Citrix Systems Inc.*, a global leader in application
delivery infrastructure and *OfficeMax *, a leading office products
retailer. "It is encouraging that companies nationwide are choosing not to
associate with Mr. Savage's hatred and bigotry," said CAIR Communications
Coordinator Amina Rubin.

CAIR is continuing to ask other "Savage Nation" advertisers to follow the
example set by other companies. AT&T is now being asked to discontinue
their advertising on the "Savage Nation" program.

*IMMEDIATE ACTIONS REQUESTED: *

*1. CONTACT AT&T.* Politely request they stop buying air time on the radio

Bismillah [IslamCity] Fasting on the Day of Arafaah

2007-11-19 Thread ***hajikhan***

It was reported from Abu Qutaadah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the
Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked
about fasting on the Day of Arafaah.
He sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said,
'It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.'
Narrated by Muslim.

This (fasting) is mustahabb for those who are not on Hajj. In the case of the
one who is on Hajj, it is not Sunnah for him to fast on the Day of Arafaah,
because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not
fast on this day in Arafaah. It was narrated that he forbade fasting on the
  Day of Arafaah in Arafaah.

2007-11-19 Thread G.Waleed Kavalec
This Iowa student of Arabic became a Muslim in her heart when she
started reading the Quran in order do to her university homework and
couldn't put it down.

I sat in the Alhambra Mosque in Granada, Spain staring at the script that
bordered the walls. It was the most beautiful language I had ever seen.
"What language is that?" I said a Spanish tourist. "Arabic," they answered.

The next day, when the tour attendant asked which language I wanted my tour
book in, I answered, "Arabic."

"Arabic?" she said, surprised. "Do you speak Arabic?"

"No," I replied. "Can you give me one in English too?"

By the end of my trip I had a bag full of Arabic tour guides to all the
sites I had visited in Spain. In fact, my bag was so full that at one point
I had to give away some of my clothes so I could make everything fit. But, I
hung on to my Arabic tour books as if they were made of gold. I would open
them every night and look at the letters of the language as they flowed
across the page. I imagined being able to write such beautiful script and I
thought to myself that there must be something worth knowing about a culture
that had such an artistic language. I vowed that I would study this language
when I started college in the fall.

Only two months before, I had left my family in Iowa to take a trip through
Europe, alone. I was only 16 years old and due to enter Northwestern
University in the fall and I had wanted to "see the world" first. At least,
that is what I told my friends and family. In reality I was searching for
answers. I had left the church only a few months before and did not know
where to turn. I knew that I was not comfortable with what I was being
taught, but I did not know of any alternatives.

Where I grew up, in the Midwest, there was no room for confusion - you were
either part of the church or you were not. So, I had no idea there was
something else. When I set off for Europe I hoped that there was.

In my church we were not allowed to pray to God, we could only pray to Jesus
and hope that he would relay the message to God. I had intuitively felt that
there was something wrong with that and so, without telling anyone, I
secretly prayed to "God." I sincerely believed that there was only one
entity to pray to. But, I felt guilty because this was not what I had been
taught. Then, there was the confusing matter of what to do during one's
"daily life."

"I dutifully went to church every Sunday and was very serious about what I
learned regarding honesty, kindness and compassion. So, it confused me when
I saw people from church acting so differently during the week. Were there
no rules during the week? Did they only apply on Sundays? I looked for some
guidance...but found none. There were the Ten Commandments that covered the
obvious things like killing, stealing and lying, but other than that, I had
no guidelines for how to act when I wasn't in church. All I knew was:
perhaps there was something wrong with wearing mini-skirts to church and
only going to Sunday School because of cute guys that attended.

One day, I went to a teacher's house and saw a shelf lined with Bibles. I
asked what they were. "Different versions of the Bible," my teacher replied.
It did not seem to bother him at all that there were so many different
versions. But, it bothered me. Some of them were really different and some
chapters were even missing from the version I had. I was very confused.

I returned to college that fall disappointed that I had not found the
answers I was hoping for in Europe, but with a passion for a language I had
only just learned about - Arabic. Ironically, I had stared right at the
answers I was searching for, on the walls of the Alhambra. But, it took me
two more years to realize that.

The first thing I did when I reached the campus was...enroll in Arabic
classes. I was one of only three people in the highly unpopular class. I
immersed myself in my Arabic studies with such a passion that my teacher was
confused. I did my homework with a calligraphy pen and I went into the Arab
areas of Chicago just to track down a Coca Cola bottle written in the
language. I begged him to lend me books in Arabic just so I could look at
the script. By the time my second year of college came around, I decided I
should consider a major in Middle Eastern Studies. So, I enrolled in some
classes focusing on the region. In one class we studied the Qur'an.

I opened the Qur'an one night to "do my homework" and could not stop reading
it. It was like I had picked up a good novel. I thought to myself, "Wow.
This is great. This is what I have always believed. This answers all my
questions about how to act during the week and it even states very clearly
that there is only one God."

It just all made so much sense. I was amazed that there was this book
written about everything I believed in and had been searching for. I went to
class the next day to ask about the author of the book so I could read more
books by them. In the copy I

Bismillah [IslamCity] SWAMINOMICS : LESSONS FROM SAMARKAND FOR MADARASAS

2007-11-19 Thread sufiyan
SWAMINOMICS

Lessons from Samarkand for madrasas

SWAMINATHAN S ANKLESARIA AIYAR

tHIS ARTICLE WAS PUBLISHED IN TOI-18 NOV 2007

I am just back from Uzbekistan, after seeing the architectural wonders of
Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. The greatest of these is Samarkand’s Registan
Square, flanked by three massive buildings decorated with brilliant tiles,
flashing hues from turquoise to orange. Millions come to admire the monuments.
But how many are astonished, as i was, to find that all three buildings are
ancient madrasas?
Today, we often associate madrasas with Islamic fundamentalism and the
indoctrination of terrorists. Saudi Arabia is accused of funding madrasas
throughout Asia that preach an especially fundamentalist brand of Wahabist
Islam. Other madrasas are also viewed with suspicion.
But, the ancient madrasas of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva were centres of
learning, not of terrorism. They were not schools. They were simultaneously
religious seminaries and great universities, teaching and studying mathematics,
medicine, astronomy and all sciences.
Ulugh Beg, ruler of Central Asia and grandson of Tamerlane, built three
madrasas. He was the greatest astronomer of his time, famous for his star
charts and astronomical calculations. He nurtured an entire cadre of scientists
and astronomers at his observatory in Samarkand, the world’s finest at the time.
Omar Khayyam is best known in India as a poet who wrote the famous Rubaiyat.
But he was also one of the scientist-philosophers of Samarkand.
Central Asia was a world centre of learning for centuries. Khiva was the
birthplace of Muhammad al-Khorezmi (780-850 AD), the father of algebra. The
word algebra is derived from al-jabr, one of al-Khorezmi’s techniques to solve
quadratic equations. He also pioneered the use of the decimal point. Ibn Sina,
known in the West as Avicenna, was among the foremost medical authorities of
his time, apart from being a philosopher and historian. He studied and taught
at the madrasas at Bukhara and Khiva.
The great madrasas of Central Asia were built on a monumental scale and
decorated as lavishly as palaces. That emphasised the honour bestowed on
science and learning at the time.
This holds lessons for India. We have, maybe 30,000 madrasas, most of which
teach Muslim children the Koran, sometimes Urdu, and little else. Such children
often skip regular school, leading to low Muslim literacy.
The government would like madrasas to modernise, and teach regular subjects
found in school curricula. But many Muslims fear this is unwarranted
government-secular intrusion into their religious institutions. Some see
madrasa reform in neighbouring Pakistan and Afghanistan as intimately related
to government attempts to control all views and quash political opposition,
while pleasing their American masters. Such fears may have less basis in India,
but cannot be called baseless. The BJP touted madrasa reform after a report on
national security. Muslims ask, schools run by the RSS are not asked to reform,
so why only the madrasas?
Islamic educational reformers include Maulana Khalid Rahmani of Hyderabad,
member of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, and general secretary of the
Islamic Fiqh Academy. He wants madrasas to teach socially useful sciences, and
notes that the Koran refers to disciplines such as astronomy, physics, biology,
history and languages.
Deoband is viewed as a fundamentalist seminary, yet its founder introduced
Sanskrit in the curriculum, to communicate better with the broader community of
his time. Using the same logic, Maulana Rahmani thinks English should be taught
in madrasas today. Madrasas in Kerala teach in Malayalam, and are integrated
with general schooling. The Jamia Milia Islamia in Delhi is a good example of a
university with the highest standards of modern learning.
Yet, these are isolated examples of Islamic modernism. Most madrasas still
teach little more than the Koran, and there is little Muslim enthusiasm for
their reform and modernisation.
The Sachar Committee concluded that the solution to low Muslim literacy and
high dropout rates was to open high-quality government schools in Muslim areas
rather than focus on madrasa reform. The committee found that only 3-4% of
Muslim children have full-time madrasa education; that Muslims view madrasa
education as a religious supplement and not a substitute for ordinary
schooling. Muslims are keen to reap the benefits of education, yet Muslim
literacy remains low because of the lack of decent state schools, high Muslim
poverty that makes private schools unaffordable, the lack of toilets for girls
in schools, and real or perceived anti-Muslim discrimination.
I agree that decent government schools can play an important role. Voluntary
madrasa curriculum reform can also help. But, after visiting Samarkand i see an
additional approach.
Muslims should be encouraged and fi

  P. K. DORAISWAMY
  http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/op/2001/11/13/stories/200300040100.htm
AMERICANS ARE nothing if not thorough. They like to have codes and
manuals for making clear their stand on every conceivable situation. No wonder,
therefore, they also have a primer on terrorism. Our readers are hereby allowed
the rare privilege of peeking into it. Definitions: (1) "Terrorism" means
any act which involves the use of violence against American citizens or
property whether or not such violence is provoked by the United States
Government's own policies and actions, and any act which injuries the
collective ego and/or belittles the image of the United States as a superpower.
Explanation: (i) If such violence happens within the borders of the United
States, it shall be deemed to be a war on the United States. (ii)
Notwithstanding the fact that these may be unlawful or involve the use of
violence, the activities of the United States Government or its agencies abroad
shall not be deemed to be terrorism. (2) A "terrorist" means any person
other than a United States citizen who criticises the policies and practices of
the United States Government and, in particular, shall include any person whom
the United States Government has been trying unsuccessfully to apprehend, and
any country which harbours, supports or sympathises with such person, or
rejoices at the misfortunes, mistakes and failures of the Government of the
United States. Explanation: (i) Whenever the Government of the United
States considers a person a terrorist, the onus shall be on that person to
prove that he is not one, and the United States Government shall not be
required to present any evidence thereof; provided that this shall not entitle
any country unless it happens to be an ardent and total supporter of the
polices of the U.S. to accuse any other country, unless it happens to be a
critic of the United States, of terrorism without proper evidence. (ii) Any
accusation of terrorism against the United States shall be considered ab
initio void and untenable; if it is not withdrawn with apologies, the United
States Government reserves the right to construe it as an act of war. (iii)
Notwithstanding its past record of activities which may otherwise amount to
terrorism, no country so long as it supports the policies and practices of the
Government of the United States shall be considered terrorist. (iv) Any
country which refuses to cooperate with the United States Government in
combating what the latter considers terrorist activities and in such manner as
the latter desires, shall ipso facto be considered terrorist. (3)
Notwithstanding anything contained in the rules of the United Nations or any
past commitment made by the United States Government in this regard, while
declaring war on any terrorist country, the United States Government shall not
be bound to bring the matter before the Security Council or any other organ of
the United Nations, or be influenced in any way by the views of the member
countries of the latter; provided that this shall not in anyway constrain the
right of the United States to pressure all other countries to settle their
disputes by negotiation, through the good offices of the United Nations, or
preferably, in accordance with the advice of the United States. (4) All
established rules, conventions and norms governing international behaviour
shall be considered relevant and binding only to the extent that they are
consistent with projecting and protecting the image of the United States as the
most powerful, invulnerable and infallible nation in the world. (5) In
comparing the seriousness of the damage caused by acts of terrorism in the
United States with that caused in other countries, the principle "One American
life equals hundred non-American lives, and one dollar of damage to American
property equals one thousand dollars of damage to non-American property"
shall be adopted. (6) The peoples of the countries whom the United States
considers terrorist and on whom it declares war shall be persuaded, and if
necessary pressured, to realise that the hardship caused to them is the price
they have to pay for tolerating a terrorist regime, and that it is all in a
good cause and will help liberate them from a terrorist government, eventually
enabling them to enjoy, like other civilised peoples, the benefits of
protection, guidance and the unquestioned leadership of the United States.
