Re: Bismillah [IslamCity] UK Muslim law - comments please

As-salaamu Alaikum brothers and sisters,

I read the article and forwarded it to some friends. I do believe it is a
good idea! Not only that, I believe a Muslim who does not support this idea
should review his or her Iman. The West, very much ignorant of the details of
Islamic law, concentrate on few rulings taken out of context and point to it as
unfair. By doing this they are saying (and I seek repentence from such a
thought) that Allah is unfair. Allah is exalted from such claim.

It seems to me that Lord Phillips, the Lord Chief Justice did actually look
into Sharia and liked what he saw; similarly the Archbishop of Canterbury saw
the same thing in the Islamic Sharia. I do pray for them that may Allah guide
them to the choice of Fitrah. The British Muslims who oppose this Idea have
no understanding of Sharia yet they oppose it just to show that they want to be
treated like everyone else! They should put their trust in ALlah and support it
and pray for us in other western countries to get such forwarded looking judges
and archbishops to help us also in our quest to freedom from human oppressive
and unjust laws.

As Lord Phillips mentioned, the Jews are already using their laws to judge
between themselves in some aspects! Why would this be a descriminatory act if
the Muslims want the same thing.

As more people (judges and lawyers study Islamic law they will realize the
benefit and the fairness and the Justice of Islam, and then, may be, Allah
willing, those judges and lawyers start thinking of changing thier lifes...
Ameen..

  So what do you think...

  Fi Amaani Allah.

Should aspects of Sharia law be used in the UK?The most senior judge
in England and Wales has said that aspects of Islamic sharia law could be used
in the UK, provided they don't conflict with existing laws. Do you agree?

Lord Phillips, the Lord Chief Justice, said that sharia and other religious
laws could be used for mediation in disputes if both parties agreed.

But he added that any sanctions must be based on English and Welsh laws and
severe physical punishments would not be acceptable.

Sharia is a set of principles which govern the way many Muslims believe one
should live one's life.

The Archbishop of Canterbury made similar comments earlier in the year,
sparking a huge controversy which leds to calls for his resignation.

What do you think of Lord Phillip's views? Could sharia law sit comfortably in
the UK? Have you ever used sharia law for any dispute?

Bismillah [IslamCity] news: Borrow a Muslim: A 'Living Library'

2008-07-06 Thread Shahid.
Borrow a Muslim? A 'living library' to prick stereotypes
By Mark Rice-Oxley

It works like a conventional library. Tables and chairs are set out for study.
Librarians bustle purposefully, staffing the checkout desk.

Except these aren't books on loan. They're people.

Welcome to the Living Library. Here, you borrow individuals who represent
stereotypes that often are the target of prejudice or hatred.

At this east London library on a recent Saturday, there were 26 books
available, including a Muslim, an immigrant, a transgender individual, a witch,
and an Indian atheist.

Readers borrow them for half an hour, hear their narrative, question them, even
pry a little, and - so the theory goes - break down some of their
preconceptions and stop judging the book by the cover.

The idea is the brainchild of Ronni Abergel, a Danish antiviolence campaigner,
who has taken the Living Library to 12 countries and watched it flourish in
places as diverse as Australia and Turkey.

We live in a time where we need dialogue, says Mr.

Abergel. With dialogue comes understanding and with that comes tolerance and
that's the mission of the Living Library: to promote understanding and
tolerance through dialogue.

There is certainly plenty of dialogue at this London venue.

At one table, a Rwandan refugee explains to a listener why immigrants cannot be
dismissed both as a drain on the public purse and a threat to local jobs. At
another, a transgender individual relates why she felt biologically compelled
to change sex. An Indian atheist and a Muslim are setting forth their worldview
to readers.

And those 'books' that aren't currently checked out - among them a witch, a
funeral director, a medium and a police officer - are swapping stories in the
back room, eating sandwiches, and waiting for their next appointment.

All of the books are unpaid volunteers, as are the organizers, recruited for
the event.

Upon entry, readers can browse a list of available books, then sign up for
their book with volunteer librarians. On this Saturday, more than 50 people
signed up, and some books were booked out almost the entire day.

I've done this in 12 countries now, says Abergel, who has received funding
from two organizations, the Council of Europe and the Nordic Council of
Ministers. In some places, I'll seed [the idea] and in some I'll put in the
seeds and come back and pick the fruits. Here, I'm training someone to do it,
helping with their first events.

The types of 'book' engaged vary from country to country. And the response from
the public can be instructive. In Britain, for example, the Muslim and the
ex-gang member are popular. In Hungary, it was the neo-Nazi, says Abergel. In
some countries, homosexual 'books' are popular, but less so in a place like
Britain, because here you're more liberal and used to it.

In Hungary, the first year, the homosexual didn't go out at all, because
people didn't dare - and they didn't take the policeman either.

The concept is proving popular in Australia, Abergel says, with a regular
Living Library session once a month in Lismore, New South Wales. Turkey's just
got up and running, and Germany and Austria are doing very well, adds Abergel,
who says he has spent 50 percent of his spare time over the past eight years
working on his project.

Now he has his eyes on America.

The next big move in the fall here is to start a tour in the States, he says.
We are looking to go to interested colleges in the States. One date in Fort
Wayne, Ind., is inked in and others are interested, says Abergel.

We also want to take it into businesses. Why not go to large corporations and
have their workers come down and have half an hour to have their horizons
expanded a little bit?

Abergel traces the origins of the concept back to a Friday night in Copenhagen,
15 years ago. A friend, just 19, was stabbed six times for no apparent reason.
Still a teenager himself, Abergel and three friends responded by setting up
Stop the Violence, a group aimed at doing just that.

Seven years later, the group was invited to put on a happening at the annual
Roskilde rock music festival. The idea of Living Library was born in a
brainstorming session in January 2000. But it took several years to get it
properly off the ground. Initially, the library had outings at festivals in
Denmark, Hungary, and Norway. But three years ago, it started to franchise
the concept, and now dozens of Living Libraries are held in Europe every year.

We see it as an important tool to promote democracy and human rights, says
Silje Bergum Kinsten of the Nordic Council of Ministers, which sponsors the
concept.

For the books, the event can be a rare opportunity to express their side of
the story. Kerry Whybrow, a transgender person, says her readers were
interested in why she made the change. She says it was a chance to do a little
PR for the 15,000 transsexuals in Britain.

I'm making my journey and I want

Bismillah [IslamCity] He equally treats all his children

The Ideal Muslim: Characteristics of the Ideal Muslim According to the Qur’an
and the Sunnah

The IDEAL MUSLIM
The True Islamic Personality of the Muslim Man
as Defined in the Qur'an and Sunnah

The Ideal Muslim  is a man of the highest moral character. In his relationship
with his Rabb, himself, family, parents, relatives, friends and the community
at large, he has a most excellent example in the prophet of Islam (pbuh). His
idealism is further strengthened by the characters of the first generations of
Muslims who excelled in all the various fields of human endeavor. He is
reassured by the teachings of Islam that he also can reach these noble heights
by working to improve his character daily.

Chapter 5: The Muslim and His Children

He equally treats all his children

One of the elements of wise upbringing is for the parents to treat all their
children equally, and not to favor one of them over the others in any way. The
child who feels that he is treated fairly and that he and his brothers are
equal, will grow up with a healthy self-esteem, free from feelings of
inferiority; he will not hate his brother, or eat his heart out with jealousy,
but will be content, tolerant, kind and caring towards others. This is what
Islam encourages and orders parents to do.

Bukhari and Muslim narrated from al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir (r.a.):

“My father brought me to the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and said, ‘I have given this
son of mine a slave I have.’ The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked him, ‘Have you given
each of your children the same?’ He said, ‘No,’ so the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) told
him: ‘Then take the slave back.’”

According to another report Nu‘man said:

“The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked, ‘Have you done the same for all your children?’
(My father)  said, ‘No,’ so the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, ‘Fear Allah (S.W.T.)
and treat all of your children equally.’ So my father went and took back his
gift.”

According to a third report:

“The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked, ‘O Bishr, do you have any other children?’ He
said, ‘Yes.’ The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked, ‘Will you give a similar gift to
each of them?’ He said, ‘No.’ So the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, ‘Do not ask me to
witness this, because I do not want to witness unfairness.’ Then he added,
‘Would you not like all of your children to treat you with equal respect?’ “
Bishr”  said, ‘Of course.’ The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) told him: ’so do not do it.’”
(Bukhari and Muslim)

Therefore the Muslim who fears Allah (S.W.T.)  treats all his children with
equal fairness, and does not favor one above the other in giving gifts,
spending money on him or in the way he treats him. So all of them will pray for
him, love him and treat him with kindness and respect.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Terrorism - How not to combat it - Ashgar Ali Engineer

The remedy for this terrorist violence is also simple. Declare war against
terrorism, do away with concept of humans rights, find some puppets to fight
its war against terror, put some suspected youth in jails and torture them till
they die or go mad and feel safe from further terrorist attacks. Who commits
sins and who pays? What do authorities care? They care only for their lust for

By Asghar Ali Engineer,

Terrorism today is engaging attention of whole world though we are more
concerned with terrorism in our own country. There is hardly any country, which
is not affected by terrorism today though reasons are widely different. In many
countries terrorism is fired by separatist fire. Many regions were included in
colonized countries by imperial powers to suit their own convenience least
knowing that increased awareness and democratic movements in future would
ignite separatist movement and when their aspirations for autonomy or
independence are denied violence would be used.
Basque in Spain, South Ireland, North and North East in Sri Lanka, Kashmir,
Nagaland and Assam, Tripura and Manipur in India and in several other regions
in other countries separatist violence would break out claiming large number of
lives and destruction of properties. What colonial powers did for their
convenience in nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, present generations
are paying price for the same.
Add to this list the sins committed by American imperialists in 20th and 21st
century to satisfy their lust for raw materials and oil in the third world
countries and Middle East and we know the violence it has resulted in and the
price thousands of innocent people are paying for it. The powerful media,
however, sees Islam as the root of violence and ascribes genesis of terrorism
to Islam. What an easy way out of ones own guilt.
They care only for their lust for
power and money.
A survey was done recently by an international agency WorldPublicOpinion.org of
several countries to find out how many people support torture as an effective
method to combat terrorism. The survey was to gauge how many people support
abolition of torture by the sate as it is totally against human rights and
human dignity. Largest number of Indians, though not surprisingly, supported
retaining of torture to 'save innocent lives. 59% Indians said torture is
necessary to combat terrorism.
People of 14 countries favour abolition of torture, even in the case of
terrorists who have information that could save lives of innocent people. But
four nations, including India lean toward favouring an exception in the case of
terrorists, according to the WorldPublicOpinion.org poll of 19,063respondents,
released ahead of 'International Victims of Torture Day' tomorrow.
Majorities in India (59%), Nigeria (54%), and Turkey (51%), and a plurality in
Thailand (44%) want exception for terrorists. Among all nations polled in both
2006 and 2008, India also has the largest increase in support of making
exception for torture in the case of terrorism – 32% two years ago to 59% now.
But it is also to be noted that those who believe torture should be totally
abolished also has risen in India from 23% in 2006 to 28% in 2008. But large
majorities in all 19 nations favour a general prohibition against torture. On
average across all nations polled, 57% opt for unequivocal rules against
torture. Thirty five percent favour an exception when innocent lives are at
risk. Just 9% favour the government being able to use torture in general.
It is also interesting to note that support for unequivocal abolition of
torture was highest in Spain (82%), Great Britain (66%) and France (66%),
followed by Mexico (73%), China (66%), Palestinian Territories (66%), Indonesia
(61%) and the Ukraine (59%). Here the question is why support for torture is so
high in case of terrorist violence? Answer is not very difficult to find.
In India the Hindu right wing or Hindu communal forces constantly propagates
that terrorism can be effectively fought only by implementing laws like TADA or
POTA and using torture as an effective tool. Leaders like Bal Thackaray even
said that the Hindu youth should become human bomb and get away with it as the
government has no moral courage to take any action.
The second reason is also connected with this. It is generally propagated by
the media that it is Islam which is responsible for terrorism, being

I have clip of her beautiful speach which can't be shared through mail-group
because of file size (about 5MB). Can be shared as per request.
Its content is an old footage from the Earth Summit Conference organized by
the United Nations back in 1992, and the scene is taken from a plenary session
under the theme, Development and the Environment.
BRAbdullatheef

The Little Girl Who Shocked World Leaders Into Silence

The speaker is Severn Suzuki, a 13-year-old Canadian girl, and her audience is
world leaders.
Two aspects of the footage got my attention: The speaker, and her message. At
the age of 9, Severn started her own Environmental Children's Organization
(ECO), made up of a small group of children committed to teaching other kids
about the ongoing environmental crisis. In 1992, Severn and her group raised
enough money to attend the Premier Earth Summit in Brazil to warn decision
makers of the catastrophic results of their actions — or inactions as we see
today — on future generations.
And this is what she had to say:
Hello, I am Severn Suzuki speaking for ECO the environmental children's
organization. We are a group of 12- and 13-year-olds trying to make a
difference. Venessa Suthie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quigg and I. We have
raised all the money to come here ourselves, to come 5000 miles to tell you
adults you must change your ways.
Coming up here today I have no hidden agenda. I am fighting for my future.
Losing my future is not like losing an election or a few points on the stock
market. I am here to speak for all generations to come. I am here to speak on
behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard. I am
here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet because they
have nowhere left to go. I am afraid to go out in the sun now because of the
holes in our ozone; I am afraid to breathe the air because I don't know what
chemicals are in it. I used to go fishing in Vancouver, my home, with my dad
until just a few years ago we found the fish full of cancers. And now we hear
of animals and plants going extinct, every day, vanishing forever. In my life I
have dreamt of seeing a great herd of wild animals, jungles and rainforests
full of birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my
children to see.
Did you have to worry of these things when you were my age? All this is
happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want —
and all the solutions. I am only a child and I don't have all the solutions.
But I want you to realize, neither do you! You don't know how to fix the holes
in our ozone layer; you don't know how to bring a salmon back up a dead stream;
you don't know how to bring back an animal now extinct; and you can't bring
back the forests that once grew — and where there is now a desert. If you don't
know how to fix it, please stop breaking it.
Here, you may be delegates of your government, business people, organizers,
reporters, or politicians. But really you are mothers and fathers, sisters and
brothers, aunts and uncles, and all of you are somebody's child. I am only a
child, yet I know that we are all part of a family, five billion-strong. In
fact, thirty million species-strong, and voters and government will never
change that. I am only a child yet I know that we are all in this together and
should act as one single world toward one single goal.
In my anger I am not blind, and in my fear I am not afraid of telling the world
how I feel. In my country we make so much waste, we buy and throw away... buy
and throw away... buy and throw away... and yet northern countries will not
share with the needy, even when we have more than enough, we are afraid to
share. We are afraid to let go of some of our wealth. In Canada, we live the
privileged life. We have plenty of food, water and shelter. We have watches,
bicycles, computers and television sets... the list could go on for two days.

By IANS,
Ahmedabad : Leading citizens of Ahmedabad Tuesday paid rich tributes to Vasant
and Rajab who sacrificed their lives for communal harmony 62 years ago.
A memorial programme, organised by the Movement for Democracy (MSD) and other
organisations, was attended by mayor Kanaji Thakor, deputy mayor Kalpanaben
Bhatt and civic officials. A number of activists from NGOs like Sanchetna,
Aapnu Mandal, Rashtriya Seva Dal, Drishti Media, and St. Xaviers Social Centre
also participated.
MSD convenor Prakash N. Shah recalled the supreme sacrifice of Vasantrao
Hegishte and Rajab Ali Lakhani who on July 1, 1946 - a rath yatra day - were
killed by a mob during communal skirmishes.
These martyrs are to be remembered as icons of struggle for justice, equality
and socialism. The responsibility of fulfilling their unfulfilled dreams is to
be carried by us, the present generation, he said.
Shah recalled Ahmedabad was up in flames that day and Vasant and Rajab were
engaged in saving Hindu and Muslim families and their houses and properties
throughout that day.
They rescued a Muslim driver from a rioting Hindu mob and a Hindu owner of a
washing company from a Muslim mob.
When they reached Khand-ni-Sheri in Jamalpur area to save a Dalit family, the
mob threatened to kill them but they did not budge and lied down on the road to
prevent the rioters from going ahead.
The fanatics killed Vasant and Rajab but spared the Dalit family.
The pair of a Hindu and a Muslim became martyrs and an icon of communal
harmony, Shah said.
A street play on communal harmony, Kem, kyan sudhi (Why, to what extent), was
also staged by activists of Drishti Media on the occasion.

With Regards

Abi

But I want you to realize, neither do you! You don't know how to fix the holes

you don't know how to bring back an animal now extinct; and you can't bring

Background:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bradford/7489392.stm
4 July 2008

A government minister has warned that many British Muslims feel like the Jews
of Europe.
Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik, who is a minister for international development,
stressed that he was not equating the Muslims' situation with the Holocaust.
But, in an interview to mark the 7 July bombings anniversary, he suggested that
many Muslims felt under siege.
This had the effect of segregating society and undermining efforts to deal with
extremism and terrorism, he said.
Mr Malik, who revealed he had been the victim of religious hatred himself, made
the comments in an interview for a Channel 4 Dispatches programme.
He said: I think most people would agree that if you ask Muslims today what do
they feel like, they feel like the Jews of Europe.

It is critical we ensure that Britain's near two million Muslims have a sense
of belonging... because it is vital in the fight against violent extremism in
the name of Islam

Shahid Malik, MP for Dewsbury
I don't mean to equate that with the Holocaust but in the way that it was
legitimate almost - and still is in some parts - to target Jews, many Muslims
would say that we feel the exact same way.
Somehow there's a message out there that it's OK to target people as long as
it's Muslims.
And you don't have to worry about the facts, and people will turn a blind
eye.
David Brown, from the Jewish Life Education Centre, said he did see some
parallels between the persecution of Jews in the 20th Century and the
contemporary treatment of Muslims.
If you think about the earlier stages of what was going on in Europe in the
later (19)20s and early (19)30s and the way that Jews were scapegoated and
stereotyped, I can certainly understand a sentiment of that is going on for the
Muslim community, he said.
The documentary - which investigates whether the fear of terrorism has fuelled
a rise of violence, intolerance and hatred against British Muslims - will be
broadcast on Monday to coincide with the third anniversary of the 7 July London
bombings.

British society is in danger of becoming segregated, Mr Malik said
Mr Malik's constituency in West Yorkshire was home to 7 July suicide bomber
Mohammad Siddique Khan.
The MP, who told how his car was firebombed, a car drove at him in a petrol
station and said he receives regular hate mail, called for action to be taken
to help Muslims feel accepted in society.
It is critical we ensure that Britain's near two million Muslims have a sense
of belonging and feel accepted, first and foremost because it is their right as
British citizens, but secondly because it is vital in the fight against violent
extremism in the name of Islam, he said.
With some 2,000 people under surveillance because of the possibility that they
might engage in terrorism the threat of an attack is a very real one and
Muslims in communities up and down the country become indispensable in the
fight against terrorism.
Yet there is no doubt that many Muslims feel under siege in the media and in
society and this siege mentality feeds into a wider victim narrative.
Mr Malik said the apparent persecution made it more difficult for people in
positions of responsibility to persuade people to challenge the small minority
of extremists who call themselves Muslims.

Bismillah [IslamCity] US War Strategy in Iraq

2008-07-06 Thread Flipzi
The war on terror has been dragged for too long now.

Saddam Hussein had been brought to justice already and Osama Bin Laden has been
forced into hiding already and he is not in Iraq. Most of his top guys in Iraq
have been neutralized already like Zarqawi.

So, why is it that US is still keeping its troops in Iraq?

Who are they hunting for in Iraq?

You cannot totally eradicate the insurgents in Iraq. New recruits will simply
take the place of those who were either killed or captured.

Keeping the US in Iraq will only aggravate the problem and will keep the war
burning.

As one American former CIA puts it, “the US is doing what it should not do in
Iraq”.

The Bush administration, as it seems, just tried to find someone to blame for
the 9/11 why it attacked Iraq.

Probably, what the older Bush failed to accomplish in his term has been
achieved by the younger Bush when it decided to blame Saddam Hussein for the
9/11.

That’s just my perception though and as how some analysts tell it.

Nonetheless, the US was doing great when it arrested Saddam. What I don’t agree
to is the continuing battle waged by the US-led coalition against the people of
Iraq.

This is wrong. The presence of foreign troops is sending the wrong signals to
the locals. Killing all insurgents will not end the fighting. New recruits will
simply take the place.

To the locals the presence of US troops, even after Saddam has been neutralized
and even after Osama Bin Laden and his top guys have been driven out of Iraq,
is interpreted as an unjust invasion of their homeland and a clear intention of
destroying Iraq without consideration or compassion upon the innocent civilian
populace.

The attacks on the US servicemen have taken so many American lives already. The
casualties and the billions of dollars in operational expenses are enough to
clearly set the real score for this war, with the US taking the losing score.

Those billions could have been used in other more worthwhile humanitarian
projects instead. The deaths of many civilians and US servicemen could have
been avoided.

What the US should do is leave Iraq as soon as possible and hand over the task
of regaining peace and order to the Iraqi government.

The US should continue the financial and technical assistance though, so that
the new government will succeed in this complicated undertaking.

The US can just keep the surveillance team in Iraq to monitor if the high-value
targets have returned.

The hunt for Al Qaeda can be sustained by improving surveillance and intel.

But first, it must now leave Iraq and let the ground recover from the rubble,
so the Iraqi people will now be able to set their sight on the newly
resuscitated hope and start enjoying peace and prosperity again.

America together with it allies can help save these new recruits or pool of
supporters by outmaneuvering extremism by making these Moslems realize that
Islam in fact, is a religion of peace that teaches followers to show love and
compassion even to the non-believers.

But the US must do so from outside of Iraq or far from the sight of the
confused Iraqi people who sees the presence of foreign troops in Iraq as an
invasion and an attack upon their religion and their own survival.

The US can ask the help of those Moslem intellectuals and religious leaders who
are moderates to make the Moslem world understand that extremism is not the
desire of the Almighty God.

The teachings of Quran compel one to show compassion and love towards the
others who have taken a different path from that of Islam.

Extremism is simply tantamount to world destruction. Even OSAMA BIN LADEN has
cautioned his fellow Moslems to shy away from extremism.

Global cooperation among the many religions and nations is the only way to
achieve genuine peace and prosperity.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Moderatism and RAND report

2008-07-06 Thread khalid rahmany
Assalam u Alaikum,

I hope everybody is fine which ever part of the world they are in. As you would
agree with me, since 9/11, the focus of the media has been constantly on
terrorism and extremism. There is a class of muslims who are being branded as
extremists (and sometimes terrorists) while another class has been promoted as
moderates and good (or peaceful) muslims. This is true wherever you live on
this globe and also true in our homeland Pakistan. Any of us can easily be
confused by all this jargon and can start questioning as to who is right and
who is wrong in this hodge podge of views. We easily curse without hesitation
those who the media curses without a second thought.

RAND (http://rand.org) issued a report on defining a moderate muslim and the
following title does a very good job in explaing what would a moderate muslim
mean compared to an extemist muslim! i.e. what would be the criteria and that
is according to RAND! In other words it exposes the THE BATTLE OF THE HEARTS
AND MINDS (BY ANWAR AWLAKI) being waged not just on muslims, but Islam itself.
Dont miss out listening to it and forward it to those you love and care for.

Bismillah [IslamCity] The Little Girl Who Shocked World Leaders Into Silence

I have clip of her beautiful speach which can't be shared through mail-group
because of file size (about 5MB). Can be shared as per request.

Its content is an old footage from the Earth Summit Conference organized
by the United Nations back in 1992, and the scene is taken from a plenary
session under the theme, Development and the Environment.

BR
Abdullatheef

The Little Girl Who Shocked World Leaders Into Silence

The speaker is Severn Suzuki, a 13-year-old Canadian girl, and her audience
is world leaders.

Two aspects of the footage got my attention: The speaker, and her message.
At the age of 9, Severn started her own Environmental Children's
Organization (ECO), made up of a small group of children committed to
teaching other kids about the ongoing environmental crisis. In 1992, Severn
and her group raised enough money to attend the Premier Earth Summit in
Brazil to warn decision makers of the catastrophic results of their actions
- or inactions as we see today - on future generations.

I am here to speak
on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard.
I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet
because they have nowhere left to go. I am afraid to go out in the sun now
because of the holes in our ozone; I am afraid to breathe the air because I
don't know what chemicals are in it. I used to go fishing in Vancouver, my
home, with my dad until just a few years ago we found the fish full of
cancers. And now we hear of animals and plants going extinct, every day,
vanishing forever. In my life I have dreamt of seeing a great herd of wild
animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterflies, but now I
wonder if they will even exist for my children to see.

Did you have to worry of these things when you were my age? All this is
happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want
- and all the solutions. I am only a child and I don't have all the
solutions. But I want you to realize, neither do you! You don't know how to
fix the holes in our ozone layer; you don't know how to bring a salmon back
up a dead stream; you don't know how to bring back an animal now extinct;
and you can't bring back the forests that once grew - and where there is now
a desert. If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it.

Here, you may be delegates of your government, business people, organizers,
reporters, or politicians. But really you are mothers and fathers, sisters
and brothers, aunts and

Bismillah [IslamCity] news: Pakistani student refuses to take scholarship from US Ambassador

2008-07-06 Thread Shahid.

Student refuses Harvard scholarship to protest Mohmand attack

ISLAMABAD,

A Pakistani student, Samad Khurram, refused his Harvard University scholarship
award presented to him by the US Ambassador Anne W. Patterson.

The student refused the award during a function organised by the Roots College
International at the National Art Gallery on Wednesday in protest against the
recently carried out American attacks on Mohmand Agency.

The US ambassador regretted these attacks, terming them a terrible
misunderstanding, and refuted the notion that the student was refusing the
award, maintaining that currently there were 5,400 Pakistani students studying
in America.

The entire hall resounded with thunderous clapping for the student, who was
later on restricted by the management from talking to any mediaperson.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Fw: Get a grip on Dhaka : Outlandish Proposal

2008-07-06 Thread S A Hannan
Get a grip on Dhaka : Outlandish Proposal

Selig S. Harrison, director of the Asia program at the Center for International
Policy and a senior scholar of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for
Scholars has written in Los Angeles Times on July 2, 2008 and has made some
outlandish claim Part of his article reads “ while the CIA and the Pentagon
search in vain for Osama bin Laden in the mountains of northwest Pakistan, an
Al Qaeda affiliate has been quietly building up terrorist bases in the jungles
of Bangladesh under the protective aegis of a new military regime in Dhaka
allied with Islamist forces. Bush administration officials privately endorse
mounting Indian evidence that Bangladeshi Harkat agents spearheaded a series of
terrorist attacks in India -- in Mumbai and Banaras in 2006, in Hyderabad in
2007 and in Jaipur in May. But the United States has conspicuously failed to
press Bangladesh's military ruler, Gen. Moeen U Ahmed, for a crackdown on
Harkat and for the removal of highly placed intelligence officials with
Islamist ties.He says that Moeen Ahmed is maneuvering to break up the two
biggest secular political parties and muzzling the media.but Harkat,
Jamaat-i-Islami Bangladesh and other Islamist groups that support the military
regime are operating unhindered. As the fourth-largest Muslim country in the
world, with 150 million people, Bangladesh matters to the United States in
security terms because Harkat and its allies have direct links to anti-U.S.
Islamist forces in Pakistan. These links predate the secession of Bangladesh
from Pakistan in 1971. When respected Bangladeshi journalists have attempted to
write about Islamist sympathizers in the military regime and their links with
Islamabad -- naming names -- they have faced death threats and assassination
attempts.

Western think tanks, their experts and journalists, most of them , are good in
manufacturing stories full of lies, half-truths and imagination. The accusation
about Bangladesh Army is totally groundless, this is a primarily Muslim army,
and they believe in Islam and practice Islam This is just natural and what
these Western writers want is de-Islamisation of the army. Their claim that
Harkat is building up in Bangladesh with the assistance of the army is a
hundred percent fabrication. There are terrorist groups of various kinds ,
mostly Maoists, and we do not know about the extent of Harkat but we can say
that the government of Bangladesh is taking all possible actions against such
groups. It is another big lie that the government is backing the Jamaate Islami
and other Islamic forces. Another lie is that terrorist activities in India are
the work of Bangladeshi outfits. We are sorry at such stories of so-called
enlightened writers of the West. We know they will never change. Venom against
Islam, Muslims and Islamic organizations is in the blood of most of them

Before the civil rights struggle intensified and succeeded, white girls
were warned of dating black men. This was sanctioned and supported at
the highest levels of local governments. Just this week it was
publicized that Kiryat Gat tells its school girls: No romancing with
Bedouin (BTW Kiryat Gat is build on land of Iraq AlManshiyya, land
stolen from Palestinian villagers who are now refugees in Gaza).

Not all citizens, even when they can do so and have access to digital devices,
record disasters or human rights abuses - especially when their own security

on citizen journalism. The French Constitutional Council approved a law in
early 2007 that criminalizes the filming or broadcasting of acts of violence by

imprisonment of eyewitnesses who film acts of police violence, or operators of

I believe that the Palestinians in general are a people who want democracy. The
Palestinians are among the most educated in the Arab world and they have been
exposed both to the Israeli democratic system and to the Western democratic
system. Unlike many of the Arab countries, there is an open debate today in
Palestinian society. I believe democracy might happen, but not in the near
future. As long as you have armed gangs in the streets and as long as the
Palestinian security forces are not real security forces and as long as there
is no rule of law, you can’t have democracy.

Bismillah [IslamCity] About reading Tafsir by common people

2008-07-06 Thread S A Hannan
Please see this correspondence

Dear partipants,

Assalamu Alaikum. The Tafsirs are written by scholars for use of common people
who can not themselves fully understand the explanation of the Quran or its
difficult part.No Mufaasir or Faqih has given a fatwa that the tafsirs are not
for common people, not even Ashraf Ali Thanwi or Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi who are
respected by Tabligh people.

It is not your duty to provide proof because every act is halal unless proved
to be otherwise.Your tabligh friend has to give clear proof from the Quran and
the Sunnah that reading tafsir by common people is prohibited or makruh.

[quote=light]Dear Sir,
I have a question to ask on reading tafseer. some tableegh group told me that
tafsser is not for normal people, so we do not need to read tafseer. one
brother explained like this - when do we study PhD? Answer is - of course after
school, college, etc. so similarly, we need to read or study quran or tafseer
after I learn arabic and expert. but my point is - quranic explanation is must
to know otherwise how we can know islam and so tafsser is part and parcel for a
muslim to read. And so many tafssers are available in the last 1300 years or
more.

Am I wrong? clarify me - I need to explain with proof and logic to my brothers
who deny to study quran. they only said that reading - reciting is ok but not
explanation. i really wonder how come we learn islam without studying Quran and
Sunnah with explanations. even the few books tabligh brothers use to read are
less authentic to me as these are written without the proper reference or usage
of Quran or authentic sunnah. your lecture on Sunnah is really an eye-opener
for me - specially the legal-sunnah and non-legal sunnah. Masahllah.
Jazakaallahukhairun - for all the lectures and free course for us.

MP Saleh narrates heart breaking stories about women in Israeli
jails

  PICIkhwanweb - Palestine

  http://www.ikhwanweb.com/Article.asp?ID=17322LevelID=2SectionID=0

  Wednesday, July 2, 2008
RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- MP Mariam Saleh, former minister of womens affairs,
who was released recently after seven-month administrative detention, revealed
in a press conference held Monday heart breaking stories about the suffering of
female prisoners in Israeli jails and the inhuman measures pursued against them
by prison administrations.

In the conference which was held by the campaign of solidarity with
Palestinian lawmakers on the second anniversary of their abduction, MP Saleh
explained that there are 80 female prisoners in Israeli jails including five
serving several life sentences and many others sentenced to 20 to 30 years.

The ex-detainee noted that the oldest female prisoner in Israeli jails is
Sona Al-Raaee who has been locked up for more than 11 years.

Some of the prisoners are mothers who left behind nine or five children
without parental care or a breadwinner because their husbands are in Israeli
jails as well and some others gave birth to their babies in jails, who are
taken away from their mothers when they are two years of age according to the
Israeli prison rules, the ex-detainee elaborated.

The ex-detainee says that many imprisoned women suffer chronic diseases,
most notably, cancer, arthritis, blood pressure and asthma, adding that some
prisoners are deprived from their family visits under many pretexts such as
lack of family relationship and security measures.

For her part, the wife of prisoner MP Ahmed Saadat said on behalf of all
families of kidnapped lawmakers that the representatives of the Palestinian
people are paying the price of the Palestinian democracy and the independent
national decision as well as the price of their refusal to comply with the
American dictates and legitimize the occupation.

Harvard study shows positive impacts of Muslim hajj

Study finds that Muslim pilgrimage experience promotes peace, harmony, women’s
rights.

HARVARD, Massachusetts – A study on the longer-term effect of participating in
the Islamic pilgrimage found that Muslims communities have become more open in
many ways after the Hajj experience.
The study, published by Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, says that hajj
– Muslim pilgrimage - urges equality and harmony.
“It increases belief in equality and harmony among ethnic groups and Islamic
sects and leads to more favorable attitudes toward women, including greater
acceptance of female education and employment,” the study found.
Entitled ‘Estimating the Impact of the Haj: Religion and Tolerance in Islam’s
Global Gathering’, the study also found that the hajj experience promotes
peaceful coexistence.
“Increased unity within the Islamic world is not accompanied by antipathy
toward non-Muslims,” stressed the Harvard study, adding that “Hajjis show
increased belief in peace, and in equality and harmony among adherents of
different religions.”
The study, which was based on data from over 1,600 applicants to Pakistan’s
hajj visa allocation lottery in 2006, can be downloaded here.
The hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam that Muslims are expected to
perform at least once in their lives if they have the means to do so.

Bismillah [IslamCity] The Next US War Crime; Big Dog, Little Tile Bush warns Israel about bombing Iran

2008-07-06 Thread Erooth Mohamed
[image: Newspaper logo] http://www.baltimorechronicle.com/ *THE NEXT U.S.
WAR CRIME:*
*Big Dog, Little Tail: The American Elite Resolves on War With Iran*
*By Chris Floyd*
Friday, 27 June 2008
http://www.baltimorechronicle.com/2008/062708Floyd.shtml

*The stated casus belli in the Iran War Resolution is Iran's nuclear
enrichment activities. This is presented as an unmitigated evil. The truth,
of course, is that these enrichment activities are entirely legal under
international treaties governing nuclear proliferation, and are being
carried out under the most extensive and stringent international supervision
ever imposed on a nation.*

I.

Let's be clear about one thing: Israel will not attack Iran without the full
knowledge and approval of the United States government. The trigger of the
warning shot of Israel's long-range air-strike exercise last week was
actually pulled in Washington. The Israelis will not force or deceive the
U.S. government into an attack on Iran; that attack – which grows more
certain by the hour – will take place because America's bipartisan foreign
policy establishment and military-industrial complex (to the extent that
there is any real difference between the two) want it to happen, or are
willing to let it happen.

It is of course an article of faith for some people that the Israeli tails
wags the big American dog http://www.chris-floyd.com/content/view/797/135/.
This rather ludicrous assertion is nothing more than the pernicious doctrine
of American exceptionalism tricked out in dissident drag. For its
underlying assumption is that good ole true-blue American elites would never
commit war crimes or seek empire and geopolitical dominion unless they had
somehow been tricked into it by those wily Jews. This is exactly backwards.
If Israel was of no use to the American elite's domination agenda, then it
would be discarded, or at least downgraded in terms of military, economic
and diplomatic support.

When a nation serves the American elite's interests well, it is rewarded,
and its various shortcomings are overlooked, however egregious they might
be. Saudi Arabia is a prime example. Egypt is another. Iraq is a negative
example. When Saddam's regime was thought useful, it was supported,
copiously. When Saddam was no longer useful – especially when he threatened
the Bush Family's long-time business partners in Kuwait – then he became a
new Hitler. When Iran was governed by a tyrant friendly to Washington, it
was lauded – and larded with the usual military support and diplomatic
muscle. When unfriendly tyrants took over, Iran became a land of Persian
devils. The list of such examples from American history goes on and on.

If Israel had, say, opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq, it would have found
itself shorn of much of its American largess very quickly. Israel is in fact
almost entirely dependent on the United States for its military and economic
well-being; in return it gives unstinting support to the interests of the
American elite. It is in many ways one of the most abject client states in
the world today, outside of Iraq or Afghanistan. The fact that there is a
convergence of interests and ideology between militarist elites in the
United States and Israel is hardly surprising. It would only be surprising
if this were not the case. And so we see a cross-pollination of ideas,
strategies, techniques, technologies – and even, in some cases, personnel
(e.g. the Clean Break group) – between these elites.

For the same reasons, we also see a strong Jewish Lobby in the United
States. For although those lobbying organizations do not actually represent
the viewpoint of the majority of American Jews, they do offer unwavering
support to the American elite's domination agenda. These organizations –
like Israel itself – also serve as useful stalking horses and lightning
rods. In the first instance, they can stake out radical positions which
would be too impolitic for America's governing elite to espouse too openly.
In the second instance, they can always be conveniently blamed for
radicalizing or duping the American elite if one of the latter's schemes
for loot and dominion go wrong. And of course they can be used to punish
domestic politicians who fail to hew slavishly enough to the elite's
imperial line. But if AIPAC came out tomorrow with, say, a demand that
America dismantle its worldwide empire of military bases, or condemned the
invasion of Iraq as a war crime, we would see its influence decline almost
instantly. Again, it is the convergence of interests with the American
elite, and their willingness to serve those interests, that give the
government of Israel and non-representative organizations like AIPAC such a
prominent role.

For example, AIPAC has played the stalking horse in helping push Resolution
362, the Iran War
Resolution,http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=11206216toward
its virtually guaranteed passage by the House. The bill – supported

By SALEH ALI

Life is unpredictable.  But I always thought I could predict what was
going to happen next.  It was only six days ago.  I was driving home
with my friends, Malik and Omar.  It was Halloween night.  We had just
watched the movie Saw 3 at the recently refurbished theater at the 3rd
Street Promenade in Santo Monica, CA.  It was 11:46pm when I glanced
at the clock on the dashboard and realized I hadn't made Isha But I
didn't say anything, as not to upset the mood.  Just three hours
earlier I put off the Isha until after the movie.  Now I was running
out of time.

I only lived 26 years.  My 27th birthday was exactly two weeks away.
I always imagined I would live long.  At least until age 60.  It just
wasn't imaginable that I would have such a sudden, unexpected death.
I had graduated from the University of Southern California three years
earlier with a degree that means absolutely nothing right now.
Shortly after, I landed a job as the marketing director of a major
clothing company.  Aside from the usual life problems, I was living a
normal life.  My girlfriend of 4 years was starting to pressure me
into us getting a place together.  I knew I wasn't supposed to have a
girlfriend in the first place but I enjoyed her company and
friendship. I wasn't ready to give that up.  I used to always tell
myself that eventually I would marry her.  Plus, what would these few
years of living a sinful life mean by the time I got older?

My job, girlfriend and life-long friends took up the majority of my
time.  It seemed I never had time to offer salah.  I hardly even had
time to sit down and eat.  Offering salah was always something that
continuously bugged me.  The more I postponed my salahs, the more it
irritated me.  I did give an effort to keep up on my salahs.  But for
the last two years of my life I gave up.  I pretty much stopped making
salah altogether.  I never made it home in time to make salah that
day.  Saw 3 was a walk through the rose garden compared to what I was
about to experience.  I was doing 85 on the 10 freeway.  At 12
midnight, 85 mph is not considered speeding.  Omar flipped through FM
radio stations searching for a song he liked.  Malik had fallen asleep
in the back seat.  I began to doze off too.

I used to hate when that happened.  I shook out of what seemed like a
10 second snooze.  I tried to keep my eyes open.  But again I dozed
off.  Omar screamed, 'HEY! It was too late.  The car struck the center
divider and spun back into the flow of traffic.  An oncoming car hit
my door.  That car was also hit by another vehicle.  We finally came
to a halt somewhere in the middle of the freeway, a hundred yards from
the spot of the collision.  I didn't feel any pain.  I was just dizzy,
I heard Omar and Malik moaning as good civilians tried pulling us from
the wreck.

I wasn't rescued until the fire fighters arrived.  It was quite a task
recovering my battered body from my totaled car.  Breathing became
difficult.  The fire fighters huddled around me and frantically
applied device after device.  'He's not gonna make it,' I heard one of
them say.  I 'm not gonna make it? How? I didn't feel like I was
dying.  I felt nothing.  My heart started pounding.  I was soaked in
sweat and blood.  I saw Malik standing over the top of me with tears
in his eyes.  'Don't quit on me', he told me.  At that time I knew it
was over.  I started to cry.  The fire fighters moved him away as they
made last attempts to revive me.  I died.  An angel came to me and
removed my soul.  I watched him fly away with it in disbelief.  'How
could you? I'm not even 27,' I pleaded.  'It's time,' he told me and
left.  Two minutes later they pulled a white sheet over me.  Omar and
Malik, apparently doing better than me, pulled the sheet back to look
at me one last time.  They cried their eyeballs out, I had known then
over since I was 13 years old and had never seen either one cry.  It
was a depressing sight.

The ride to the morgue, until then, was the worst experience I ever
had.  I was alone.  It was dark and cold.  I missed my mom.  I missed
my brother.  I missed my sister.  I wished I had spent that last night
with my family instead of with Omar and Malik.  I worried what my
mother was going to do when she saw me in this state.  I was ugly.
When we finally arrived, I was placed in another cold room with dozens
of other dead people.  I missed my family so much.  Every so often a
family came in to view their dead.  I always thought it was my family
but it wasn't.  Hour after hour passed.  No mom. No dad.  I started to
cry again.  Then one odd hour I recognised voices.  My father walked
in with my mother in his arms.  His face worn from stress.  Hers wet
with tears.  They just stared into my eyes and cried.  I stared back.
I wanted to tell them I loved them.  I couldn't.  I wanted to hug
them.  I couldn't.  Mom stroked my bloodied hair and left.

I was to be buried the next day.  When my parents left, it hit me.

Bismillah [IslamCity] doubts on Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah

doubts on Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah

http://www.darultawhid.com/en/forum/index.php?topic=1998.0

One other manipulated term of Islam is ‘ahl-sunnah’. Unfortunately from people
among the graveworshipers to the people of kalam, from a very wide angle people
attribute themselves to be ahl-sunnah and some of them even accuse others of
not being among ahl-sunnah.

Basically there are three main schools: Bayan, Burhan and Irfan.

Bayan is the name of the group who attest to the dhahir of the ayah and those
who keep themselves away from making  tawil (distort), tatil (deny), tafwid
(claming that have no meaning) or anthropomorphism (consider them as human
attributes) etc and they build their system upon naql. This school takes nass,
ijma and ijtihad as main authorities to generate a world concept for servicing
Islam. This group is comprised from Salafi salihin.

Burhan is the name of the group who build their system upon the inference of
mentality. This school aims to reach the information of the world as a whole or
pieces through the use of natural sources of wisdom of human beings while
benefiting from the sense, experiment and the judgment of mentality. Ahl-qalam
can be classified under this group.

Irfan (Marifah) is the name of the group who build their system upon kashf.
This school intends to reach the oneness with Allah -as this is the subject of
the information regarding the Sufis- accepting walayah and kashf only ways to
attaining their goal. Tasawwuf is the source of this group.

There are other movements which are the mixture of these schools:

The synthesis of Bayan and Burhan: Ibn Rushd and Fahruddeen ar Razi may take
place in this synthesis.

The synthesis of Bayan and Irfan: Ghazali is the best example of this
synthesis.

Nowadays we are witnessing the fitnah of some who are trying to use the
oppositions between ulama and different madhabs among ahl-sunnah to prove that
ahl-sunnah does not comprise from haqq. The following is summarized from their
argument:

“It is because there will be only one haqq and not plural. But there are people
among Hanbalis who made takfir of Asharis and Asharis who claimed Hanbalis to
be Mujassima and Musabbiha. And others who blame Abu Hanifah to be Murji’ah
etc. while all claiming to be ahl-sunnah.”

One of the most effective ways of attrition of an ideology or school is
bringing out of their ikhtilaaf to the light. With this action it is intended
to destroy the claim of its being only and real madhab. Or this will be help to
bring an excuse for not attaining to the mentioned madhab. It is the same as
those individuals who are running from the struggle through bringing the excuse
that there are so many jamaah around and they do not know which one is right or
wrong; there are many ikhtilaaf among these jamaahs etc. It is a fact that
every and each jamaah/group have batil aqidah however it is a contradiction for
those who believe and accept these jamaah and groups as Muslim; not to join
them.

It is very important to pay attention while classifying the madhabs to take the
dictionary/literal meaning of the word also checking how suitable the word
attributing it is. There is an important reason that Ahl-Sunnah was attributed
with this word –those who comprehend the issue will easily realize that they
are the only group that deserves this attribute- it is because of their
busyness with the ilm riwayah and hadith. Moreover the majority of muhaddithun
and narrators are sunni therefore this ilm developed within the sunnis. So many
ahadith which are widespread among the ahl-sunnah while ahl bidah do not have
these ahadith with them. And also ahl-sunnah based on its usoul of the
explanation of Qur’an upon sunnah meanwhile other ahl-bidah groups upon their
hawa (desire). For this reason they also called as ‘ahlu’l-hawa wa’l-bidah’.
Indeed the majority of ahl-bidah accuses sahaba with kufr such as Khawarij and
Rafidha or they insult the
salafy salihin of this ummah like Muthazila or other groups of kalam. Some
even criticized ahadith according to their batil usoul. For these reasons they
left most of the ahadith and did not benefit from ahadith.

After the martyrdom of Uthman (ra) some of the itiqadi madhabs occurred such as
Khawarij, Shia, Qadariyya and Murjia; however the majority of the sahaba and
the tabiin kept distant to these movements and stuck to the aqidah which had
been inherited from RasulAllah (saw). Until the beginning of the Hijri 3rd year
the majority of the people were upon this manhaj and they were followers of the
sunnah and jamaah. But especially during the reign of Ma’mun, one of the
ahl-bidah ‘Mutazilah’ took the power over the government and performing the
episodes of pressure over the ulama of ahl-sunnah ‘mihna’ -even though these
pressures had aroused from the ulama later- cause a huge destruction on the
aqidah.

The people of kalam among the ahl-bidah took the power over the ulama with

Verily! Allâh will not change the good condition of a people as long as they do
not change their state of goodness themselves(by committing sins and by being
ungrateful and disobedient to Allâh). But when Allâh wills a people's
punishment, there can be no turning back of it, and they will find besides Him
no protector. (Ra'd 13:11)

Moosaa (Moses) said to his people: Seek help in Allâh and be patient. Verily,
the earth is Allâh's. He gives it as a heritage to whom He will of
His slaves, and the (blessed) end is for the Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2).
(Al-A'raf 7:128)

Allâh has promised those among you who believe, and do righteous good deeds,
that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the
earth,as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the
authority to practise their religion, that which He has chosen for them (i.e.
Islâm). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their
fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in
worship) with Me.
But whoever disbelieved after this, they are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious,
disobedient to Allâh). (An-Nur 24:55)

Bismillah [IslamCity] Shia-Sunni solidarity in Saudi Arabia

2008-07-06 Thread Shahid.
Rare show of Islamic unity in Saudi Arabia
By Mariam Al Hakeem, Correspondent
http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/08/06/16/10221429.html

Qatif: In a rare gesture of unity and amity with their brothers in Islam, a
delegation of Sunnis performed Juma prayers at one of the Shiite Mosques in
the eastern city of Qatif, the only part of Saudi Arabia where Shiites are a
majority.

Observers see it as an unprecedented move to soothe the feelings of alienation
among the Shiite minority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The delegation, headed by Shaikh Mukhlef Bin Daham Al Shamri, were attentive to
the Friday sermon delivered by the well-known Shiite Shaikh Hassan Al Safar, in
which the preacher underscored the significance of strengthening Islamic and
national unity and closing ranks among followers of Islam.

This is part of our duty to promote virtue and prevent vice, he noted. The
new initiative on the part of Sunnis and Shiites to close their ranks received
wide media coverage and some foreign media such as BBC also covered it
extensively.

Shaikh Al Shamri is one of the shaikhs of Shamr tribe, which spreads over a
vast area in various regions of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. In yet
another gesture to express the significance of national unity, Shaikh Al
Shamri and those accompanying him, covered their shoulders with the Saudi
flags while they were praying at the mosque, according to witnesses.

During the talks with the Shiite community, Shaikh Al Shamri proposed that a
similar delegation of Shiites would come over to one of the Sunni mosques in
Al Khobar next Friday. This move was regarded as a bold initiative from the
part of the majority Sunnis to bury the hatchet and show their reciprocal
respect to fellow members of the community.

This also comes as part of repairing the damage caused by a statement issued
two weeks ago by some 22 Sunni clerics blaming Shiites. In their statement,
radical Sunni clerics accused Shiites of destabilising Muslim countries and
humiliating Sunnis.

However, the Saudi officials disclosed then that the clerics who issued the
statement do not represent the official Saudi religious establishment, and
their views do not reflect those adopted by the government.
