smart, I'll ask him such a tough question that he won't be able to answer it
and I'll have the chance to embarrass him in front of all the Arabs. He asked
'Ali (A.S.), tell me a number, that if we divide it by any number from 1-10 the
answer will always come in the form of a whole number and not as a fraction.'
Hazrat Ali (A.S.) Looked back at him and said, 'Take the number of days in a
year and multiply it with the number of days in a week and you will have your
answer.'
The person got astonished but as he was a Mushrik he still didn't believe Ali
(A.S.). He calculated the answer Ali (A.S.) gave him. To his amazement he came
across the following results:
The number of Days in a Year = 360 (in Arabic Calendar)
The Number of Days in a Week = 7
The product of the two numbers = 2520
  2520 divide by 1 = 2520
  2520 divide by 2 = 1260
  2520 divide by 3 = 840
  2520 divide by 4 = 630
  2520 divide by 5 = 504
  2520 divide by 6 = 420
  2520 divide by 7 = 360
  2520 divide by 8 = 315
  2520 divide by 9 = 280
  2520 divide by 10= 252

  Second
One day a person came to Ali (A.S.). He was planning to ask Ali (A.S.) such a
question which would take Ali (A.S.) a long time to answer and because of that
his Maghrib Prayers would be delayed. He asked, 'Ali you say you know
everything in the world, then tell me which animals lay eggs and which animals
give birth to their young ones Hazrat Ali (A.S.) looked back at him smiled and
said, 'The animals who have their 'EARS' outside their body give birth to their
young ones and the animals who have their 'EARS' inside their body lay eggs.'

  Third
A person was about to die, and before dying he wrote his Will which went as
follows 'I have 17 Camels, and I have three sons. Divide my Camels in such a
way that My eldest son gets half of them, the second one gets 1/3rd of the
total and my youngest son gets 1/9th of the total number of Camels' After his
death when the relatives read his will they got extremely perplexed and said to
each other that how can we divide 17 camels like this? So after a long hard
thought they decided that there was only one man in Arabia who could help them:
'Ali Ibne Abi Taalib.' So they all came to the door of Ali (A.S.) and put
forward their problem.
Hazrat Ali (A.S.) said, 'Ok. I will divide the camels as per the man's will.'
He said, 'I will lend one of my camels to the total which makes it 18
(17+1=18), now lets divide as per his will'
  The Eldest gets 1/2 of 18 = 9
  The second one gets 1/3 of 18 = 6
  and The Youngest gets 1/9 of 18 = 2
Now the total number of camels = 17
Then Hazrat Ali (A.S.) said, 'Now I will take my Camel back.'
This was the genius that Hazrat Ali was in his time.

Bismillah [IslamCity] ruling: Thinking of haraam things without actually doing them

2009-03-02 Thread Shahid
Question # 111817: Thinking of haraam things without actually doing them

Question:

What is the ruling on a person thinking of doing haram acts like stealing or
committing adultery, while he is sure that he will not do them even if it is
very easy for him to do?.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.
If something crosses a person's mind, such as thoughts of zina, stealing,
consuming intoxicants and so on, but he does not do anything, then he is
forgiven for that and he does not incur sin thereby, because the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Allaah has forgiven my ummah for
what crosses their minds, so long as they do not speak of it or act upon it.
And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever thinks of
doing a bad deed but does not do it, it will not be recorded against him; and
according to another version, one hasanah (good deed) will be recorded for
him, because he refrained from it for My sake. Agreed upon - narrated from the
hadeeth of Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him). What this means is
that if a person refrains from a bad deed that he was thinking of for the sake
of Allaah, Allaah will record one hasanah for him, and if he refrains from it
for any other reason, then no sayi'ah (bad deed) will be recorded against him,
but no hasanah will be recorded for him either. This is the bounty of Allaah to
His slaves; to Him be praise and thanks, there is no god but Him and no lord
beside Him.

May Allaah send blessings and peace upon Muhammad and his family and
companions. End quote.

Free speech and fatwas

Understanding and tolerance between the West and Islam can hardly be
achieved when one side continues abusing the other, writes Aijaz Zaka
Syed* http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2009/936/op3.htm#1#1
http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2009/936/op3.htm
  _

This appears to be a year of anniversaries. If Iran's revolution was
marked last week, the media spotlight this week has been on the fatwa
the late Ayatollah Khomeini issued against Salman Rushdi 20 years ago.
A great deal has been said and written over the past two decades for and
against The Satanic Verses as well as the fatwa condemning its author
for his cheap offensive targeting the prophet of Islam. And today as the
world revisits the storm Rushdi's underhand book and Iran's fatwa
unleashed back then, a lot of chest thumping and hand wringing is going
on in the West.
Rushdi's defenders are back with a vengeance and both the rabid right
and liberal left have joined forces to take on extremist Islam that is
apparently a clear and present danger to the hallowed ideals and values
of Western civilisation.
At a time when anything to do with Islam and Muslims looks fair game,
the Rushdi saga appears to offer another opportunity to all Islam
bashers. Some cleverly cloak their invective in a critique of Iran and
all the troubles it appears to be unleashing across the Middle East.
Some target the alleged inherent intolerance of Islam and its followers
in the name of debating free speech. The rest simply do not need an
excuse to open another front in the war on Islamist terror. Seems we
are the world's favourite punching bag. Just try using the same freedom
against the Jews and see the instant results.
Last week, British journalist and columnist Johann Hari wrote a rather
nasty piece dripping with hatred for Islam in The Independent, a fine
newspaper I've long admired. Of course, he does it in the name of
defending free speech and human rights. Hari's article that was
reproduced in The Statesman published from New Delhi and Calcutta
generated lot of heat and dust in India, home to a large Muslim
community. As a result, the Statesman's editor and publisher were
arrested for hurting religious sensibilities.
As a journalist, I empathise with the Statesman folks because they were
penalised for no fault of theirs. But were the people who came out on
the streets in protest wrong to do so? I don't think so. The Independent
columnist was certainly out of line when he attacked Islam in his piece
titled, Why should I respect these oppressive religions? But if you
think Hari is equally irreverent to all religions, you'd better think
again. The whole piece is devoted to Islam and its oppressive
practices and teachings.
Hari, who was last year awarded Newspaper Journalist of the Year by
Amnesty International, is all worked up that world bodies like the
United Nations are curbing the right to criticise religious beliefs. In
fact, Hari's harangue begins with the lament that the right to
criticise religion is being slowly doused in acid.
Specifically, the writer is upset that the UN Human Rights Council has
accepted an old demand by Muslim states to check the abuses of free
expression including defamation of religions and prophets. In fact,
Hari bewails the fact that with the UN conceding to the Muslim appeal
against attacks on religious beliefs and symbols in the name of free
speech, writers like Rushdi can no longer have the freedom to target
Islam and its prophet. He goes on to complain that today, whenever a
religious belief is criticised, its adherents immediately claim they are
the victims of 'prejudice' -- and their outrage is increasingly being
backed by laws.
But that's how it should be, shouldn't it? What kind of freedom is it
that gives you a right to hurt others and abuse their sacred beliefs and
convictions? Arguing that nothing should be sacrosanct in a free society
and that he is not attacking Muslims but their faith, Hari says: All
people deserve respect, but not all ideas do!
That's some argument and some logic! Fortunately or unfortunately, I've
never lived and worked in the West. So I've really got no idea what
makes the likes of Johann Hari reach this conclusion. But I've heard
that line of reasoning before. Like when Sheriff Bush and Deputy Sheriff
Blair reassured us that their war was not against Muslims but against a
hateful, evil ideology.
That is the cleverest thing to say -- or perhaps the dumbest! Because
history would tell you that those looking to humiliate you will first
attack what you believe in. Which is what Hari has been trying to do for
some time. Which is what those behind the Danish cartoons sought to do
when they abused the man who is loved and revered by a billion believers
more than their own lives.
This is also what the Dutch MP Geert Wilder, who has made a documentary
entitled Fitna (Strife) comparing the Quran to Hitler's Mein Kampf, has
been trying to accomplish. Wilder was denied entry into Britain
recently,

Lahore: Dr Aafia Siddiqui will file an FIR against former Pak President Pervez
Musharraf and former PM Nawaz Sharif, said her advocate Iqbal Jafri.
Dr Aafia Siddiqui, suspected of having links to terrorist organizations, has
been charged in a criminal complaint filed in a court of New York on account of
attempting to kill US personnel during interrogation and on a charge of
assaulting US officers and employees in Kabul, Afghanistan, on July 17, 2008.
Subsequently Dr Aafia was imprisoned in Bagram for 18 days before being taken
to the US for a trial.

Due to pressure from Aafia Siddiqui’s family, the Pakistan government has been
trying to secure her release from the US claiming her to be innocent.
Although the US government has guaranteed Aafia the best legal assistance and a
fair trial, her family is adamant that she be sent back on grounds that the US
authorities have been consistently torturing her for years.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Israelis who refuse to fight Arabs

2009-03-02 Thread Shahid
Father, forgive me, I will not fight for your Israel
Omer Goldman, daughter of a former Mossad chief, tells why she prefers jail to
the military draft
Igal Sarna
Omer Goldman is a pretty girl, slender as a model. Never still, very restless,
she is filled with anxiety by the expected loss of her freedom. For months
before she refused to be drafted into the Israel Defence Forces, she went to a
psychologist every week to prepare for what was to come: incarceration in a
cell in a military prison.

I met her several times last month in an apartment with other girls who are
conscientious objectors. Together they would hand out flyers against Israel's
occupation of the West Bank and Gaza at the gates of a high school like the one
she left a year ago.

On her last day of freedom as a civilian, I saw her at the gates of the intake
base to which she had received orders to report for induction into a two-year
stint with the defence forces, like every Israeli girl. She had come to refuse
the draft, to be tried and to be imprisoned immediately.

Several dozen supporters showed up - members of Anarchists Against the Wall,
her mother and a few girlfriends - and she stayed close to them as though she
were trying to delay the end, the moment when she would clash all alone with
the army.

For Omer, this transition is sharper and more surprising than for most
conscientious objectors: she is the daughter of the former deputy head of
Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, the man who nearly became its head.

Omer grew up all her life in the warm bosom of a huge security establishment
that has now become an enemy rather than a friend. Her father appears in the
newspapers as N. He was a senior intelligence officer who transferred to Mossad
and climbed to the top until in 2007 he became the deputy to Mossad's chief,
Meir Dagan, now considered the most powerful mystery man in the Israeli
security system.

N, whose speciality is Iran, was spoken of as Dagan's designated successor, but
Dagan had no intention of retiring. Differences of opinion developed between
the two strong bosses, and N resigned in June 2007.

This was the time when his 18-year-old daughter Omer, a pampered child of the
wealthy suburb of Ramat Hasharon, was beginning to move away from the usual
high-school-to-army trajectory.

In parallel to her father's struggle and his resignation from Mossad, Omer
rebelled against the path he had paved for her and went to have a look at
Palestinian life on the other side of the wall. Call this an adolescent's
rebellion against her father or a battle for the heart of a father who had left
home.

She is one of about 40 pupils who signed a school-leavers' protest letter this
year. Thirty-eight years ago the first such letter - a counterblast against the
occupation and the war of attrition, sent by pupils in the final year of my
secondary school to Golda Meir, the prime minister - caused an uproar.

There have been other letters since then, and although the furore is not what
it was, in Israel conscientious objection still arouses cold, self-righteous
wrath.

Omer told me that the crucial moment of her metamorphosis occurred this year
when she went to a Palestinian village where the Israeli army had set up a
roadblock. Someone she had considered her enemy all her life stood beside her
and someone who was supposed to be defending her opened fire at her.

We were sitting by the roadside talking and soldiers came along and after a
few seconds they received an order and fired gas grenades and rubber bullets at
us. Then it struck me, to my astonishment, that the soldiers were following an
order without thinking. For the first time in my life, an Israeli soldier
raised his weapon and fired at me.

And when you told your father? Dad was astonished and angry that I had been
there and endangered my life. After that we had conversations. He supported me
as his daughter and we have a good relationship, but he is decidedly opposed to
what I do and even more to my refusal to serve in the army.

At first he thought this was a passing phase of adolescence and later he
understood that this is coming from a place deep inside me. He and I have very
similar characters. I, too, fight to the end for what I believe in. But we are
opposites ideologically.

When I ask more about her father, Omer smiles and does not answer. A rare
moment of silence.

On September 23 she refused to serve in the army, was tried and was sent to
prison for 21 days. This week she will be tried again - and again, until the
army tires or she tires.

In two weeks' time my own son Noam is due to join the army, and I will be
accompanying him to the base where I last saw Omer Goldman. Unlike her, Noam
intends to do his military service. I understand them both.

Let Muslims remember and pay heed to the warning of our Final and Last
Messenger and Seal of All Prophets, Our
Holy Prophet Muhammad (on whom Allah and His angels send their blessings, peace
and salutations!) in the following words:

Thawban reported the Apostle of Allah (peace upon him) as saying:

The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating
invite others to share their dish. Someone asked: Will that be because of our
small numbers at that time? He replied: No, you will be numerous at that time;
but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allah
will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy, cast enervation
(weakness) into your hearts. Someone asked what is Wahn (enervation, weakness).
The Apostle of Allah: He replied: Love of the world and dislike of death.
(Related by Imam Ahmad with strong chains of reporters and Abu Dawud)

Not only Indo-Israel but Britain America European Union and United Nations are
all united against the Muslims and are against their blood as in Afghanistan,

Subject: Bismillah [IslamCity] Indo-Israel collaboration Mumbai attacks

 February 24, 2009

 Col Ghulam Sarwar (R)

India and Israel have been hobnobbing with each other for the past
many decades but the world at large has been unmindful of their hush
hush activities. Likewise, hidden ties with both USA and Israel have
not seen light of the day and only recently details of these ties have
been unravel lest. It will be recalled that on November 25, 2008,
Mumbai terrorists did their job meticulously well by provoking every
 possible ally in the world.

By killing foreigners in addition to many Indians, they enlisted the
support of all western terrorist nations against Islam and Muslims. As
a result, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kashmir and Muslims in India have been
put on high alert as USA, UK and Israel are determined to strike a
stunning blow on their entity. Pakistan, as expected is feeling rather
perplexed on the presumption that Muslims might have been involved in
the Mumbai carnage. These are however; far fetched apprehensions as in
view of their religious beliefs, Muslims would not perform this
dastardly act with such precision. As things stand, the Mumbai attacks
may have chosen to target whatever comes in their way, be it the
railway shorts or luxurious hotels, like “The Taj or Obroi Trident, or
 any community centre (Nariman House.

However reports released recently have revealed that the assault on
Nariman House was carried out deliberately with ulterior motives.
Presumably, the terrorists had wanted to involve Israel also to join
Indo-US strategic killings of Muslims. According to a retired Indian
Admiral, Das, the aims of the attack on the Jewish Centre was to tell
India that it’s growing links with Israel were not acceptable to the
terrorist groups. Nariman House attack was to tell the Indians clearly
that India’s growing linkage with Israel was not what India should be
doing. Seen in this background, India wanted to use terrorism ploy to
get military concessions from other anti-Islamic nations.

India, for quite some time, had been making desperate efforts to
develop relationships with both USA and Israel and it has been quite
successful in its efforts. Interestingly, due to its clever
machinations, it has also successfully maintained economic relations
with the Muslim World - mainly the Gulf States. Apart from acquiring
military wares from USA, Europe and Russia in recent times, India has
become one of the largest customers of Israeli military techniques and
arms which are considered more advanced and lethal in the world. India
acquires weapons of about 1.5 billion dollars every year from Israel.
Only Russia sells more arms to India than Israel. India believes that
terrorism ploy could help advance its military interests in USA and
Israel and its calculations seem to be absolutely precise and
faultless. It may not be amiss to mention here that India seeks
advance military equipment and technology at concessional rates by
using Russia’s bargaining chips, but now Mumbai’s November 26, 2008
incident has given an extra advantage to New Delhi to obtain more
privileges from Tel Aviv. Israel let loose hell in Palestine by using
cluster bombs, killing thousands of innocent Palestinians including
women and children. India, however, has not said a single word of
sympathy for the hapless Palestinians. Instead, it is planning to sign
more agreements in days to come with the Jewish state.

To conclude, India and Israel thinks alike for damaging the interests
of Muslim countries. However, it is a matter of deep egret that
Muslims are not aware of the dangers that are currently facing them.
How sad it is to see that when Palestine was under terror attacks from

Dear Friend,
As a former diplomat and member of the State Department, I was heartened to see
that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is planning a trip to Israel and the
West Bank soon. Please ask your senators to encourage her to use it to
underscore her, and the Obama administration's, commitment to working toward
Israel-Palestinian peace. Click here to urge your senators to take this step
toward promoting Middle Eastern peace and addressing the dire humanitarian
crisis in Gaza.
When CODEPINK asked you to donate $10 to send a gift basket to a woman in Gaza
last week, they weren't prepared for the overwhelming response. Thanks to your
stunning generosity, our International Women's Day delegation will be able to
bring over 2,000 baskets with us for the women of Gaza. We have room for
more--click here to donate a gift basket full of vitamins, first aid supplies,
chocolate and other essentials and treats.
I traveled to Gaza a few weeks ago, and was moved by the profound strength and
resilience of the women there. One woman I met, Izbet Abed Rabu, lived in a
tent with her husband and 5 children after their two story home had been
flattened into rubble. Even though her children's school had been destroyed and
they had to brave 40 degree temperatures at night, Izbet considered herself and
her family lucky; her neighbors on either side had each lost three family
members.
I know Izbet and other women like her will be so grateful to receive your
baskets and support.
You can also help the women of Gaza from your own backyard (or your own dining
room) by hosting a house party to raise funds and awareness. Women around the
country are creating evenings filled with food, music, poetry and information
to educate friends and family about the often misunderstood crisis in Gaza.
Many groups are creating handmade cards and crafts to add a personal touch to
our gift baskets to Gaza (send your personal touch to 712 5th Street NE,
Washington, DC 20002). Click here to see if there are any events planned in
your area and click here to list your own.

When I return to Gaza with Medea, Gael Murphy, author Alice Walker, and other
amazing people from around the globe March 5-12, I will be honored to carry
your baskets and solidarity with me.
Thank you for speaking out and giving from your heart to help the women of
Gaza and bring peace to the Middle East.
With peace and hope,
Ann Wright

There are two versions which according to me are shiah and sunni. One has to
read the khutba Hajjatul Wida (The Last Sermon) which mentions the Holy Quran
and Holy Prophet's Sunnah and the other Ahlul Bait for which sunnis also hold
them in respect.

Ahlus sunnah wal Jamaah respects the family of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi

Unfortunately, shia have gone extreme in the religion by taking the family of
Prophet as intermediaries, and by abusing the companions of the Prophet such as
Umar and Abu Bakr(may Peace be upon them).

Dr. Zakir Naik says what the scholars of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah say. If

Dear All concerned.

There is no Wahabism Islam in the World. A man with the name of Muhammad Bib
Abdul Wahab who is follower of Mazhab of Imam Ahmed Bin Hamble (RA). Imam Ahmed
Bib Hamble (Hambly Mazhab) is one out of four Mazhabs. It is said that these
four
Mazhabs are on Haq. Even then some persons having no knowledge of Islam do not
hesitate to blame the Mazhab of Imam Ahmed Bin Hamble (RA).

When we say that these four Mazhabs came into existance more than 100 years
after the completion of Islam, and are not on the right path, even then some
says that these four Mazhabs are on the right path. This is the admission of
those people who blame
Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahab (Hambly Mazhab) as on right path and on the other hand
these people blame Hambly Mazhab as on the wrong path.

However, Islam is a name of Quran o Hadith, the follower of these two books are
also consideredWahabi by Qabar Parast group. Even I have seen some non-sense
people who are basically from Mazhab Hanfi declare to the follower of Hanfi
Mazhab as Wahabi. They have no sense of Islam.

Mr. Zakir Naik from India is a great schollar of Islam. He has won so many
Munazras with
ghair Muslims.

He is true follower of Islam. I have seen on Internet that so many Hindus and
other people
have converted / accepted Islam with his struggle and knowledge.

May Allah give him more courage to spread true Islam in the continent.

Please do not hear / take care of such mails which are spread to defame
schollare of Islam.

Thanks.

Shafi

Dr. Zakir Naik - Defame And Destroy.
Jamshed Iqbal
One comes across several interesting comments from the people who have been
defending Mr. Zakir Naik on Indian Muslims Blog. Most of my brothers and
sisters are impressed by his “immense knowledge” without knowing that his kind
of knowledge (database or retention) has nothing to do with religion at all. In
other words the knowledge he and his fans boast of is irreligious in its very
essence, for any true religion is an ever-flowing fountain of “wisdom” not
“knowledge”.
However, Mr. Naik is not an only man basking under this false impression but,
it is pity

Bismillah [IslamCity] Deprogramming UK Muslim Prisoners

2009-03-02 Thread Shahid
Deprogramming UK Muslim Prisoners

IslamOnline.net Newspapers

CAIRO - British prison authorities have designed a program on deprogramming
Muslim prisoners to cure them from extremism with the help of therapists and
some imams.

It's about stopping violence, a source told the Daily Mail on Sunday, October
19. Our focus is on protecting the public and on reducing the risk of
offenders hurting others.

Crafted by the Ministry of Justice, a special Extremism Unit will use an
experimental treatment program to cure Muslim prisoners from extremism.

The program relies on cognitive behavioral therapy, similar to the
de-programming methods used to unbrainwash members of religious cults.

Under the program, the special unit will train prison staff to recognize the
signs of extremism. Then, therapists would work with high-risk prisoners to
change their perceptions.

It's pretty clear it wouldn't work with everyone, admits another source. But
our view of extremism is that, at the center, the views of the hardcore,
high-profile leaders will not be subject to change. But for those further out,
it may be quite effective.

The deprogramming is part of a wide-ranging strategy to combat extremism in
Britain.

There is no official estimate about the number of Muslim prisoners in Britain
but there are 90 Muslims serving time for terrorist offences.

Imams' Help

Some 150 Muslims imams are helping in the program, according to the Daily Mail.

We're looking to them to shoot down the religious justification for violence,
one source said. They have to be able to stand up to those who support
terrorist killers and say they are wrong.

Mahmood, an imam, has already been working with inmates at Whitemoor
maximum-security prison in Cambridgeshire to change their extremist attitudes.
Prisoners are like patients, and we are spiritual doctors who must make their
best efforts to save patients who might die, he said.

I make no exception for those convicted of terrorist offences: they need their
treatment, too. If I see a murderer, I don't withhold my message.

Last year, a study about current and former prisoners in England, Scotland and
Wales said draconian policies adopted by prison authorities, like restricting
prayers, Qur'an reading and access to programs and newspapers, radicalize
inmates.

My approach is, I don't judge. The judgment has been made by the court. If
you judge, you cannot reform them. God is mercy.

Comments:

What extremism and violence are they talking about?

Muslims are not engaged in violence except to counter and stop (zionist, jew,
christian, hindu) Kuffar violence and terrorism against Muslims in Muslim lands.

The focus of Muslims is also on protecting the public, the Muslim public, who
are being attacked and bombed while asleep in the safety of their own homes,
and hunted down, kidnapped and tortured around the globe!

They call it radicalization when the person attacks them for forbidding his
religion (salaat Qur'an). We can guess what signs of extremism they are
looking for: A Muslim who reads al-Quraan and prays regularly, on time and in
congregation (Jamaah). Also, a Muslim who rejects kuffar attacks and occupation
of Muslim lands and refuses to condemn the Islamic resistance against these
kuffar.

Sudan Diaspora Flock Home to Polish Image

By  Ismail Kamal Kushkush, IOL Correspondent

If I can impact one person’s image of Sudan…that’s one less person with
negative feelings toward Sudan, El-Kogali told IOL.
KHARTOUM — Many young Sudanese professionals who grew up abroad are returning
to their home country to help contribute to its development and improve its
image.

Sudan has an image problem because we don’t know how to market ourselves to
the rest of the world, Issraa El-Kogali, a freelance photographer who grew up
in Egypt, the UK and the US, told IslamOnline.net.

Conflict in Darfur, commonly described as a genocide pitting Arabs against
Africans, has brought much international media attention to Sudan.

There isn’t a genuine interest in the cultural of Sudan; the focus is on
political conflicts and economic difficulties, regrets El-Kogali, 29.

Critical of international media coverage of her country, she came back in 2003
after spending twenty-one years of her young life abroad and decided to work as
a communications professional.

She uses her talent to present positive images of Sudan.

Her recent exhibition, Zeina: A Photo Iconography, was held in Khartoum,
London and Washington DC, presenting iconic images from northern Sudan.

We have two images of Sudan; [the first] is a distorted media-created identity
that focuses [only] on civil war and hunger, explains Malak Abubaker, 26, who
was born and raised in Kuwait and educated in the United Arab Emirates.

But what sinks my heart is that beautiful images of Sudan are not published;
we have a lot to show for and present.

She also returned to Sudan three years ago and is a communications manager with
a management consultancy company.

Development

Abusin (L) and Abubaker believe their company can positively help Sudan’s image
by showcasing businesses and individuals. While all the young professionals seek
to contribute to Sudan’s development and improve its image, they are doing it
in different ways.
Mustafa Khogali, 35, was born in Cote d’Ivoire, raised in Kuwait and educated
in the USA.

Hearing so much negativity about Sudan [abroad] made me want to come back,
asses for myself and make a difference, he told IOL.

Khogali currently manages an oil field suppl
y company in Khartoum.

He believes that his education allows him to work with investors and bring
needed experience to the Sudanese economy.

I convinced a Malaysian company to come to Sudan who were initially
reluctant, he noted, adding that the Malaysians are telling him that the
situation is not bad as the media projects it.

They are here now and they are happy.

Mazin Abusin, 37, who grew up in the US and UK, came back to found a management
consultancy company.

He seeks to help clients to manage their projects in a more effective and
efficient manner.
Sudan has witnessed an increase in foreign direct investments in the past five
years with the discovery of oil and the end of civil war in the south.

Abusin believes that his company can positively help Sudan’s image by
showcasing businesses and individuals.

Abubaker, who is the company's communication manager, agrees.

We are trying to showcase Sudan as a successful county not denying the
challenges but looking out for solutions.

Despite political challenges, Sudan has witnessed double digit economic growth
in the past five years because of oil revenues and foreign investment.

Abubaker says that foreign investors she has spoken to have been encouraging
her work.
'The time for it is now' they tell me.

While none of these young professionals believe they will see an immediate
change in perceptions of Sudan abroad, they are hopeful because of the positive
feedback they are getting.

If I can impact one person’s image of Sudan, one khawaja [foreigner], that’s
one less person with negative feelings toward Sudan, maintains El-Kogali, the
photographer.

Luis Bueno, deputy head of the mission of the Embassy of Spain in Khartoum, has
seen her works and is quite impressed.

She dwells in the history of the country’s symbols, he notes.

The pictures [leave] a positive impression of Sudan.
