Free speech and fatwas Understanding and tolerance between the West and Islam can hardly be achieved when one side continues abusing the other, writes Aijaz Zaka Syed* http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2009/936/op3.htm#1#1 http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2009/936/op3.htm _ This appears to be a year of anniversaries. If Iran's revolution was marked last week, the media spotlight this week has been on the fatwa the late Ayatollah Khomeini issued against Salman Rushdi 20 years ago. A great deal has been said and written over the past two decades for and against The Satanic Verses as well as the fatwa condemning its author for his cheap offensive targeting the prophet of Islam. And today as the world revisits the storm Rushdi's underhand book and Iran's fatwa unleashed back then, a lot of chest thumping and hand wringing is going on in the West. Rushdi's defenders are back with a vengeance and both the rabid right and liberal left have joined forces to take on extremist Islam that is apparently a clear and present danger to the hallowed ideals and values of Western civilisation. At a time when anything to do with Islam and Muslims looks fair game, the Rushdi saga appears to offer another opportunity to all Islam bashers. Some cleverly cloak their invective in a critique of Iran and all the troubles it appears to be unleashing across the Middle East. Some target the alleged inherent intolerance of Islam and its followers in the name of debating free speech. The rest simply do not need an excuse to open another front in the war on Islamist terror. Seems we are the world's favourite punching bag. Just try using the same freedom against the Jews and see the instant results. Last week, British journalist and columnist Johann Hari wrote a rather nasty piece dripping with hatred for Islam in The Independent, a fine newspaper I've long admired. Of course, he does it in the name of defending free speech and human rights. Hari's article that was reproduced in The Statesman published from New Delhi and Calcutta generated lot of heat and dust in India, home to a large Muslim community. As a result, the Statesman's editor and publisher were arrested for hurting religious sensibilities. As a journalist, I empathise with the Statesman folks because they were penalised for no fault of theirs. But were the people who came out on the streets in protest wrong to do so? I don't think so. The Independent columnist was certainly out of line when he attacked Islam in his piece titled, Why should I respect these oppressive religions? But if you think Hari is equally irreverent to all religions, you'd better think again. The whole piece is devoted to Islam and its oppressive practices and teachings. Hari, who was last year awarded Newspaper Journalist of the Year by Amnesty International, is all worked up that world bodies like the United Nations are curbing the right to criticise religious beliefs. In fact, Hari's harangue begins with the lament that the right to criticise religion is being slowly doused in acid. Specifically, the writer is upset that the UN Human Rights Council has accepted an old demand by Muslim states to check the abuses of free expression including defamation of religions and prophets. In fact, Hari bewails the fact that with the UN conceding to the Muslim appeal against attacks on religious beliefs and symbols in the name of free speech, writers like Rushdi can no longer have the freedom to target Islam and its prophet. He goes on to complain that today, whenever a religious belief is criticised, its adherents immediately claim they are the victims of 'prejudice' -- and their outrage is increasingly being backed by laws. But that's how it should be, shouldn't it? What kind of freedom is it that gives you a right to hurt others and abuse their sacred beliefs and convictions? Arguing that nothing should be sacrosanct in a free society and that he is not attacking Muslims but their faith, Hari says: All people deserve respect, but not all ideas do! That's some argument and some logic! Fortunately or unfortunately, I've never lived and worked in the West. So I've really got no idea what makes the likes of Johann Hari reach this conclusion. But I've heard that line of reasoning before. Like when Sheriff Bush and Deputy Sheriff Blair reassured us that their war was not against Muslims but against a hateful, evil ideology. That is the cleverest thing to say -- or perhaps the dumbest! Because history would tell you that those looking to humiliate you will first attack what you believe in. Which is what Hari has been trying to do for some time. Which is what those behind the Danish cartoons sought to do when they abused the man who is loved and revered by a billion believers more than their own lives. This is also what the Dutch MP Geert Wilder, who has made a documentary entitled Fitna (Strife) comparing the Quran to Hitler's Mein Kampf, has been trying to accomplish. You need JavaScript enabled to view it (Cyprus, 11 January 2009) - The Free Gaza Movement ship, SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, will leave Larnaca Port at 12:00 noon, Monday, 12 January, on an emergency mission to besieged Gaza. The ship will carry desperately needed doctors, journalists, human rights workers, and members of several European parliaments as well as medical supplies. This voyage marks Free Gaza's second attempt to break through the blockade since Israel began attacking the Gaza Strip on 27 December. Between August and December 2008, the Free Gaza Movement successfully challenged the Israeli blockade five times, landing the first international ships in the port of Gaza since 1967. The Israeli military violently attacked an earlier attempt by the Free Gaza Movement to send an emergency boat filled with doctors and medical supplies to Gaza. In the early hours of Tuesday, 30 December, the Israeli navy deliberately, repeatedly, and without warning rammed the unarmed ship, the DIGNITY, causing significant structural damage and endangering the lives of its passengers and crew. The ship found safe harbor in Lebanon, and is currently awaiting repairs. Fouad Ahidar, a member of the Belgian Parliament sailing to Gaza aboard the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, responded to concerns that Israel may attack the unarmed mercy ship by saying, I have five children that are very worried about me, but I told them, you can sit on your couch and watch these atrocities on the television, or you can choose to take action to make them stop. Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have injured thousands of civilians and killed over 800 people, including scores of women and children. This ongoing Israeli massacre severely and massively violates international humanitarian law defined by the Geneva Conventions, especially the obligations of an Occupying Power and the requirements of the laws of war. The United Nations has failed to protect the Palestinian civilian population from Israel's massive violations of international humanitarian law. Israel has closed off Gaza from the international community and demanded that all foreigners leave. But Huwaida Arraf, an organizer with the Free Gaza Movements, stated that, We cannot just sit by and wait for Israel to decide to stop the killing and open the borders for relief workers to pick up the pieces. We are coming in. There is an urgent need for this mission as Palestinian civilians in Gaza are being terrorized and slaughtered by Israel, and access to humanitarian relief denied to them. When states and the international bodies responsible for taking action to stop such atrocities chose to be impotent, then we--the citizens of the world--must act. Our common humanity demands nothing less. Israel has been notified that we are coming. A copy of the notification to the Israeli Authorities is attached. The media is invited to the Larnaca Port at 10:00 am to for final preparations and a press conference before departure. ### WHAT YOU CAN DO Take Action! The inhumane effects of this siege threaten to stunt an entire generation - both in terms of physical and mental growth due to malnutrition, terrorization by bomb attacks, incursions and the use of sonic booms - but also in terms of the generation of students which have won places at academic institutions around the world but cannot fulfill them, and those undermined on the ground in Gaza by a lack of food, medicine, electricity, materials, and the peace and space to make use of them in.” For over two years, Israel has imposed an increasingly severe blockade on Gaza, dramatically increasing poverty and malnutrition rates among the 1.5 million human people who live in this tiny, costal region. The World Bank recently warned that the entire banking system in Gaza may soon collapse resulting in “serious humanitarian implications.” Already, over eighty percent of Gazan families are dependent on international food aid in order to feed their children. Lubna Masarwa, another Free Gaza organizer and the current delegation’s leader, pointed out that, “The Palestinians of Gaza don't need charity. What they need is effective political action that changes their lives and ends the Occupation. We can't bring electricity to Gaza on our boats. We can't import freedom of movement or safety. Free speech not possible in the land of the free By Henry Porter http://www.dawn.com/2006/08/14/int9.htm IT used to be said that academic rows were vicious because the stakes were so small. That's no longer true in America, where a battle is underway on campuses over what can be said about the Middle East and US foreign policy. Douglas Giles is a recent casualty. He used to teach a class on world religions at Roosevelt University, Chicago, founded in memory of FDR and his liberal-inclined wife, Eleanor. Last year, Giles was ordered by his head of department, art historian Susan Weininger, not to allow students to ask questions about Palestine and Israel; in fact, nothing was to be mentioned in class, textbooks and examinations that could possibly open Judaism to criticism. Students, being what they are, did not go along with the ban. A young woman, originally from Pakistan, asked a question about Palestinian rights. Someone complained and Professor Giles was promptly fired. Leaving aside his boss's doubtful qualifications to set limits on a class of comparative religion — her speciality is early 20th-century Midwestern artists such as Tunis Ponsen (nor have I) — the point to grasp is that Professor Giles did not make inflammatory statements himself: he merely refused to limit debate among the young minds in front of him. This might be seen as a troubling one-off like the story involving the President of Harvard, Lawrence Summers, who suggested that innate differences between the minds of men and women could be one reason why fewer women succeed in science and maths careers and was then ousted. But Giles's sacking is far more important because it is part of the movement to suppress criticism of Israel on the grounds that it is anti-Semitic. A mild man, Giles seems astonished to find the battle for free speech in his own lecture theatre. "It may be sexy to get on a bus and go to DC and march against war," he said to me last week. "It is much less sexy to fight in your own university for the right of free speech. But that is where it begins. That is because they are taking away what you can talk about." He feels there is a pattern of intolerance in his sacking that has been encouraged by websites such as FrontPage-Mag.com and Campus Watch.Joel Beinin of Stanford University is regularly attacked by both. Beinin is a Jew who speaks both Hebrew and Arabic. He worked in Israel and on an assembly line in the US, where he helped Arab workers understand their rights. Now, he holds seminars at Stanford in which all views are expressed. For this reason, no doubt, his photograph recently appeared on the front of a booklet entitled 'Campus Support for Terrorism'. It was published by David Horovitz, the founder of FrontPageMag.com who has both composed a bill of rights for universities, designed to take politics (for which read liberal influence and plurality) out of the curriculum and a list of the 100 most dangerous academics in America, which includes Noam Chomsky and many other distinguished thinkers and teachers. The demented, bullying tone of the websites is another symptom of the descent of public discourse in America and, frankly, one can easily see the attractions of self-censorship on the question of Middle East and Israel. Read David Horovitz for longer than five minutes and you begin to hear Senator Joseph McCarthy accusing someone of un-American activities. At Harvard, a few weeks after what was called Summers's 'mis-step', a much greater row ensued when John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt of Harvard published a paper called 'The Israel Lobby'. Brave because the alleged distortion of US pro-Israel foreign policy is unmentionable in American public life. Their paper was printed only in the UK, in the London Review of Books. In America, there then followed what has been described as the massive 'Sh!' Apart from the mud-slinging from sites such as Campus Watch and FrontPageMag, it has had little mainstream circulation and there has been no real debate. I have read it several times and cannot disagree with an early point made by the authors. "There is a strong moral case for supporting Israel's existence, but that is not in jeopardy. Viewed objectively, its past and present conduct offers no moral basis for privileging it over the Palestinians ." That is the crux. All Americans, to say little of the British who have been reluctantly welded to US policy, surely deserve the chance to know about the influence that lobbies such as the American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) exert at times like these. "The bottom line," say Mearsheimer and Walt, "is that AIPAC is a de facto agent for a foreign government, has a stranglehold on Congress, with the result that US policy is not debated there, even though the policy has important consequences for the entire world. In other words, one of the three main branches of the government is firmly committed to supporting Israel."

Salam alaikum, Once again the Muslims have been succuessfully able to turn support and sympathy toward them into condemnation and call for restraint. If free speech is a right, then boycotting certain product is also our right, and while this boycott was taking momentum and spreading across the globe (very rightly so), the actions of many Muslims in the manner they are protesting has drawn its own criticism. Why do we have to be so reactionary? Is it because we have become deafitist in our mentality? Is it our need for instant gratification? Or our faith is so fragile that it requires such action? While I wholehearedtly condemn the publication of the cartoons, I equally condemn the manner in which many of the Muslims are protesting. It is a pity that our actions are almost justifying the contents of the some of the cartoons that we are trying to protest! I bet some of those cartoonists or newspaper editors are saying right about now See I told you so! I found the article below insightful, something people at both sides of the debate can benefit from. In the 1890s, a Frenchman called Edouard Drumont ran a newspaper full of crude caricatures of Jews and articles that railed against their increasing dominance of French and European life, reaching fever pitch during the treason trial of French officer Alfred Dreyfus. Drumont called his paper La Libre Parole - "The Free Speech". As the Danish cartoon row spreads and editors hurry to wrap themselves in the mantle of Voltaire, it is worth noting that most of civilised Europe today gladly accepts (and in some cases even legislates to preserve) a taboo on the kinds of free speech that Drumont sought to establish. Indeed, anyone who has worked in newspapers knows that a certain degree of self-censorship comes with the territory. There are pictures we deem too graphic for the front page (or any page), letters too offensive and pointless to be worthy of publication, words that are termed obscene and excluded from copy. None of this means that newspapers should be prevented from criticising Islam, Muslims or their prophet. But looking at the 12 Danish cartoons (which, thanks to the internet, is now easy to do) any of their criticisms - of the oppression of women, or the crime of suicide bombing - could have been made with just as much force and considerably more wit without breaching the taboo on representing the prophet Muhammad. Indeed, several of the cartoons don't depict him, and most of the others are such crude stereotypes that if they weren't labelled with his name, it would be impossible to tell them apart from other Muslim-baiting efforts. Lars Refn's cartoon, which instead showed a schoolboy called Muhammad writing on a blackboard in Farsi that "Jyllands-Posten's journalists are a bunch of reactionary provocateurs", earned him a rebuke from one online "Voltaire", who called him "a coward who does not understand the seriousness of the Muslim threat to free speech". That a threat exists is clear, thanks to the murder of Theo van Gogh and other cases. But is this the best way to address it? Above all, the idea that Europe is somehow being taken over by wealthy or radical Muslims is as bigoted and repulsive as the idea of a century ago that it was being taken over by wealthy or radical Jews. Those Muslims who have threatened violence over the cartoons live mostly in the very Muslim world that many European Muslims have migrated from. However, such thuggish behaviour, wherever it occurs, is testament to a lack of power; only when you feel disenfranchised in those avenues of life that really matter can you become exercised over such trivia. Those who insist that this row is about upholding Islam need to ask themselves at whom the prohibition on depicting the prophet is aimed. The answer is Muslims, so that they do not fall into idolatry and revering the messenger instead of his message. No Muslim is at risk of worshipping the images in these cartoons. So what's the beef? This controversy is about power. Muslim communities in the West feel under suspicion and under siege through the mere fact of their faith. Muslims in the Muslim world feel war has been declared on them by an adversary who controls the world. In such circumstances, the one power people feel they have left is to insist on their dignity. At no time since the Middle Ages has the atmosphere between Islam and the West been more charged, or the power to insult so instantaneous. In November 2001, the Scottish Daily Mail ran an essay on the prophet by historian John Casey with an engraving of a man in furs and a turban bedecked with pearls and feathers, intended to be Muhammad. That is exactly what is happening in the non-Muslim world due to the fear and lies about Muslims and Islam spread by a sinister alliance of the neo-cons of the West and no-mods of Islam an army of opportunists under different banners from "moderate" to "liberal" and "progressive" Islam. In the end, non-Muslims will remember not the "enemies" portrayed on the cover pages of the Times, [1] but the real enemies who push them from confusion into clash and from clash into unnecessary wars and ultimate fall of the much vaunted global order. The enemy of the non-Muslim world is not Islam as it is now being officially recognized in the political (the 9/11 Commission´s report) and religious circles (the sign outside a church reading: you must remember Islam is the enemy). The enemy of the non-Muslim world are not Muslims fighting physically and intellectually to bring an end to the direct and indirect occupations of their homelands. The real Muslim-enemies of the non-Muslim world are those Muslims who are close friends of the real culprits behind 9/11: the war criminals involved in the continued carnage around the Muslim world. Together they are a gang that has shaped the mindset that sees enemy in nothing but Islam. [2] The interest of the Muslim-enemies lies in success of the totalitarians in Washington and other capitals. Their benighted opportunism, however, makes them extremely dangerous. As effective tools in the hands of the real culprits behind 9/11, [3] they are unwittingly undermining theinterest of both the East and the West. Muslims-enemies of the non-Muslim world are not the masked gunmen in Iraq, but those wearingthe civilized face masks with banner from moderates to liberal and progressive Muslims the neo-mods of Islam. Understanding how the neo-mods of Islam are undermining the Western world under the auspices of the neo-cons is as much interesting as it is important to reverse this destructive trend. It must go without saying that those who planned destruction of the WTC and forged a passenger plane´s attack on Pentagon are not friends of the United States and its allies at all because for them destroying American property and killing innocent people is of no concern as long as these criminal acts could serve their criminal objective. Sacrificing WTC and 3000 people therein is just like the US customs and DEA agents brining in drugs from Colombia; selling it in the US street to their fellow countrymen; keeping the proceeds in American banks and then finally transferring these funds to BCCI (Bank of Credit and Commerce International) to facilitate its closure in 1988. [4] These criminal acts, the subsequent occupations and the continuing carnage did not occur is a vacuum. These criminal acts and the subsequent political and military adventures needed years of ground work to prepare a mindset that would instantly accept Muslims and Islam as the enemies and would feel comfortable with all kinds of psychological degradation and physical annihilation of the alleged enemy. The most important task of preparing such a depraved mindset has been undertaken by the intellectual alliance of likeminded warlords, such as Huntington, Bernard Lewis, Pipes, Perle, Friedman, Frum and others. Their work has been the real inspiration for the culprits behind 9/11 and their subsequent barbarism in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is not difficult to see the whole range of enemies once it is established as to whothe real culprits behind 9/11 are, because by simple logic the friends of the enemies are also enemies. It is not difficult to understand that the WTCs were not destroyed to bring a revolution in the US for some unimaginable levels of progress and prosperity. The only motive was to make the US invade and occupy the perceived enemy lands, to promote a war within its perceived enemies and to impose a way of life which the perpetrators of these crimes deem appropriate for the whole world. The real culprits behind 9/11 were most probably technicians, military experts, political figures and some strategic planners. Nevertheless, it were the opinion makers who brought the real culprits to this state of mind and continue tohide their crimes. The real friends of these opinion makers are the neo-mods of Islam who are being exploited to achieve the same
